While the Federal Liberals remain historically popular under Prime Minister Mark Carney, that isn't the case for their provincial counterparts. By the end of 2016, more than half of Canada's provinces and territories had Liberal governments. Today, that's down to one, as Liberal premiers fell one by one to largely conservative-- but some NDP-- replacements. Liberal parties faced especially historic collapses in BC, Ontario, and Quebec. But despite that, recent polls have shown the provincial liberals gaining some ground in a couple of provinces. Host Caryn Ceolin is speaking with John Ibbitson, journalist and author, about what happened to provincial liberals, and if there is any hope for their future. OSAP. School boards. Airports and jets. As Queen's Park breaks for the summer, the Ford government is facing growing scrutiny over a series of high-profile decisions and the public response to them. TVO Today's John Michael McGrath breaks down the latest moves and the political stakes behind them. Then, how are voters feeling about the government, and is there an opening for the opposition? We hear from a panel of political watchers: Kim Wright of Wright Strategies, Ontario Liberal strategist Andrew Perez, columnist Michael Taube, and John Michael McGrath.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Should they have pinned this guy down? Do you actually like living in Toronto? GUEST: John Fraser - interim Ontario Liberal leader
A tribunal found that nothing corrupted the Ontario Liberals' controversial nomination meeting in Scarborough Southwest. Hosts Steve Paikin and John Michael McGrath discuss why Nathaniel Erskine-Smith's allegations were rejected, and what comes next. They also look at emerging advocacy to change the party's voting rules, as well as new names that have entered the Ontario Liberal leadership race. Plus, Ontario finally passes a new law regulating the inappropriate behavior of municipal politicians. Advocates say it's a first step, but the threshold for disciplinary action raises eyebrows. Will the law actually help? Then, Doug Ford lashed out at another judge's decision this week. A judge decided it was a Charter violation for Waterloo to clear an encampment that allegedly stands in the way of transit development. Were Doug Ford's comments out of line? Some legal academics believe Ford's statements threaten the independence of Canadian Courts. Finally, in "Your Column, My Column," JMM looks at whether new rules around grocery store leases could bring grocery prices down. And Steve pays tribute to one of Toronto's original political mavericks, Howard Moscoe.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on Open Sources Guelph we manage the chaos. Even a simple candidate nomination meeting in the Toronto area did not go as planned for any of the people involved, and that's to say nothing of the reporting of war crimes against Palestinians in the so-called "paper of record". But if you're looking for provincial chaos, look no further that one of our western provinces, and our guest this week is going to lend some of his insights into it. This Thursday, May 21, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: South By Scarborough Southwest. A simple nomination contest in a Toronto riding to fill a vacancy at Queen's Park has turned into a tale of dysfunction and possible skullduggery. For Nate Erskine-Smith, winning the nomination was supposed to be a lift off of sorts to becoming the new Liberal leader, but now he's throwing around accusations that his 19-vote loss for the Scarborough Southwest nomination was a hatchet job. Are the Ontario Liberals okay? From Israel with Lawfare? After long being only the subject of reports from U.N. and human rights groups, allegations of sexual violence against Palestinian prisoners by Israeli Defence Forces finally made the pages of The New York Times, which has prompted Israel itself to cry, "lawsuit". In other news, a group called the Israel Law Center has threaten to sue the Canadian Museum of Human Rights because of a new exhibit about the creation of Israel from the Palestinian perspective. So this is lawfare, right? Wild Wild Rose Country. A couple of weeks ago, we tried to dip into Alberta politics but it was hard for two Ontario lads to make heads or tails of that crazy scene, so now we've brought in a stringer. For this episode, we're joined by Jeremy Appel of The Orchard newsletter, the man who broke the news about the Alberta voters' list and The Centurion Project, to lend his perspective on the state of Alberta politics, what Danielle Smith is thinking, and why Naheed Nenshi can't seem to make a play. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.
Nate Erskine-Smith lost his bid for nomination for the Ontario Liberals in Scarborough Southwest, putting his plans for leadership in question. He's alleging serious voting irregularities, and that the Ontario Liberal establishment has it in for him. Meanwhile, the Toronto Star publishes a curious Editor's Note, retracting a statement from the PMO that Carney did not in fact endorse Erskine-Smith, despite the video being posted online. Then, a Toronto Star freelance columnist criticizes the Star's reporting, and has her column pulled. What is happening? Barbara Patrocinio of iPolitics joins San Grewal to sort through the chaos. Choosing the new Ontario Liberal candidate in Scarborough Southwest has gone sideways. Ahsanul Hafiz won by 19 votes, but runner-up Nate Erskine-Smith says he has reason to appeal. Is he right? Hosts Steve Paikin and John Michael McGrath parse what Steve saw at the Liberal nomination meeting, including some things he found quite unusual. Then, Steve and JMM discuss the Ontario government's takeover of Conestoga College. And finally, the Auditor General issued four special reports, outlining concerns around trucker training, artificial intelligence use in government, special education services, and how the government enforces court orders in spousal and child support. This week's court ruling on the Alberta separation petition has only raised more questions about whether the province will be holding a referendum on independence this fall. Whatever next steps Premier Danielle Smith takes will come with a great degree of risk — for her party, for the province and for Canada. This week on The Numbers, we discuss some new polling numbers out of Alberta and what they say about the path forward for the UCP government. We also chat about Ontario Liberal leadership hopeful Nate Erskine-Smith's nomination defeat in Scarborough Southwest and recent polls that show Doug Ford's Ontario PCs losing support. Jerry opens the show with commentary on how “Not American” has become the sum total of Canada’s national identity. He then turns to the Auditor General’s findings that commercial trucker training and licensing in Ontario are deeply problematic. Amanda Corbett, Director of the Caledon Community Road Safety Advocacy Group, joins Jerry to weigh in on this in her community. Canada’s auto industry could disappear by 2040, according to RBC. To unpack this, Jerry speaks with David Adams, President and CEO of Global Automakers of Canada. The hour closes with political columnist Brian Lilley from the Toronto Sun, who joins Jerry to discuss his latest column arguing that the Ontario Liberals can’t sweep voting irregularities under the rug.
After spending over a decade in the House of Commons, Nate Erskine-Smith plans to leave the federal political arena in June. However, the Toronto-area Liberal MP hasn't decided if he will continue to pursue an Ontario Liberal leadership bid after dropping the provincial nomination race in Scarborough. This past week, we've learned that NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice and Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson will be vacating their seats in the coming months. Nate Erskine-Smith is also promising to resign his seat once he makes his bid for the Ontario Liberal leadership (and a provincial nomination) official. These trio of byelections, whenever they are called, will prove to be stiff tests for Mark Carney, Pierre Poilievre and Avi Lewis. This week on The Numbers, we break down what will be at stake in these three contests and discuss how they might play out on the electoral calendar. We also look at new polls that suggest Doug Ford might be in trouble in Ontario, as well as some new voting and independence numbers out of Alberta. 40 years ago, something quite extraordinary happened at Queen's Park. The opposition parties combined forces to defeat the Progressive Conservative government of the day, thus, bringing to an end, 42 straight years of Tory rule. The previous time a government had changed hands on a lost confidence vote? 1871! So this was rare. And even a few months earlier, there was little indication any of that drama would unfold.
