It was a quick post-and-delete from the Ontario government, after Premier Ford's $75M anti-tariff commercial broadcasted on American televisions, pissed off President Trump, and received some harsh penalties in return. Trump said the content in the ad was fake, and went as far as suspending all trade negotiations with Canada as a result. A few days later, it seemed a new fury arose from the White House, with Trump slapping an additional 10% tariff on Canadian goods for not taking the commercial down fast enough.Trade negotiations have been going on for months, but after Prime Minister Carney returned from two U.S. trips with no trade deal, Canadian leaders seem to be having a hard time sitting on their hands in the meantime. Host Richard Southern speaks to John Wright, CEO of Canada Pulse Insights, to discuss the fallout of the premier's move, and what Carney needs to do to make sure all of Canada remains on the same page on the fight against Trump. Inside the Village - A weekly podcast featuring newsmakers in Ontario
Send us a textLeafs tickets, a Parisian wedding, Rob Ford's favourite nightclub owner — even Drake. This evolving story out of Queen's Park has it all.Last week, Ontario's auditor general had some scathing words for the Ford government's $2.5-billion Skills Development Fund (SDF), which supports “innovative projects” aimed at hiring, training and retraining Ontario workers.Shelley Spence found that the selection process was “not fair, transparent or accountable” — and that provincial labour ministers handpicked groups to receive hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars against the advice of civil servants. The auditor general's findings followed exclusive reporting from Village Media's The Trillium, which revealed that multiple groups connected to the Ford government received generous SDF grants.Beneficiaries included a restaurant business with connections to a former key aide to the premier; a centre that trains people to work in clubs run by a longtime Ford associate; and a dental practice brokerage whose CEO worked closely with the wife of the former labour minister.Joining us on tonight's Closer Look to connect all the dots are three of The Trillium journalists who've been following the money: editor-in-chief Jessica Smith Cross and reporters Charlier Pinkerton and Jack Hauen.Hosted by Village Media's Michael Friscolanti and Scott Sexsmith, and produced by Derek Turner, Closer Look is a new daily podcast that goes way beyond the headlines with insightful, in-depth conversations featuring our reporters and editors, leading experts, key stakeholders and big newsmakers.Fresh episodes drop every Monday to Friday at 7 p.m. right in your local news feed — and on the show's dedicated website: closerlookpodcast.ca. Greg Brady and the panel of: Steve Paikin, Author and Broadcaster, host of The Paikin Podcast, Chloe Brown, policy analyst and former Toronto mayoral candidate, Discuss: 1. A lot of ugly GTA crime stories over the weekend….a lot. So - will the federal Liberals sit on all this. I feel it - very different perspectives about crime, bail, the Youth Criminal Justice Act - it's real unlikely the NDP will ever call for stiffer sentences….but don't the Liberals see what the public appetite is? 2. No school boards for the Toronto Catholic District School Board or the Toronto District School Board - I'm not happy with a lot of the behaviour, the rogue spending, the political activism of the Boards - it isn't the job….BUT…this is a failure of the Ford Government to not have this sorted out - Agree/Disagree? 3. CEO who snatched hat intended for young boy at US Open says he made 'huge mistake': this moment going viral over the weekend, honest mistake or do you think he is just apologizing because it's going viral and affecting his business? Greg Brady and the panel of: Ben Mulroney, Host of the Ben Mulroney Show 9 to Noon on the Corus Radio Network Ana Bailao, former Toronto city councillor, deputy mayor, housing expert Discuss: 1-There's a LOT of spending in the Ontario budget - and a lot of grim economic news…..what worries you the most? Does this make it clear that the Ford Government was right to get ahead of these concerning financial numbers in the province? Ontario tables tariff-era budget with bigger deficit and bleak economic outlook 2-Still more criticism of the fact the federal government won't put out a budget for the rest of the calendar year. Fair to criticize this, and, for Ana, - does not having a federal budget impact the City of Toronto, and what they can and cannot do? The government could function without a budget, but will need a spending bill 3-Bubble zones - this has seemed terribly difficult to get things in line - when it comes to hospitals, places of worships, and schools? Other municipalities - it took 2-3 weeks…we're close to 19 months into regular and consistent protests anywhere and everywhere in Toronto… Learn more about your ad choices. Over the past few years, homeless encampments have become a fixture in every major city across Canada. Governments of all stripes have been grappling with the best approach to dealing with them. Is it best to clear out encampments, and push the people living there into the shelter system? Or is it better to take a hands off approach, and accommodate encampments as best as possible? In the province of Ontario, the Ford Government has taken the drastic step of tabling legislation to give municipalities more power to evict people living on public land, and shield authorities from lawsuits afterwards. Is that a step in the wrong direction? Host David Smith speaks with Tim Richter, CEO of the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness, about why governments are struggling to effectively deal with chronic homelessness.Over the past few years, homeless encampments have become a fixture in every major city across Canada.
