Devotion described the earliest Christians. Now we might only describe the most serious Christians as "devoted". Much of our life and culture conspire to make our lives about anything other than Christ. Many Christians haven't challenged the basic assumptions about what or who we value, what we prioritize and how we live...and, without noticing, Christ was removed from the center of our lives. ...we have become devoted to something else. How do we reclaim pure and simple devotion?
Every decision to improve or transform ourselves involves an entire host of choices. If we want to exercise in the morning we have to make choices about going to bed at night. If we want to be generous we have to make choices about how we spend our time. Unless we're prepared for ALL the decisions that are involved we're not going to make any transformations. Join us as we explore 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 and we ask ourselves the question - do we have what it takes?
Christmas is a rescue mission of grace. The nativity was just one phase of this a quest to redeem humanity.
The Division III Haverford College men's basketball team is off to an outstanding 8-1 start. KYW Newsradio's Matt Leon spoke with head coach Patrick Doherty about what has keyed this success.
Scammers are good at masquerading as the real thing and tricking people into doing things that are contrary to their own well being. Just like that, sin is a scam. It promises the very thing that it will eventually steal. It promises happiness and delivers sorrow. It promises freedom and delivers slavery. Worst of all sin makes it harder to believe that there is a Savior who doesn't want to condemn us but heal us.
(The audio quality isn't excellent. We we're experiencing some technical difficulties). We all have them, areas of our lives where we simply do not see ourselves clearly. This lack of self-awareness is not only destructive and, to make matters worse, we don’t even see the problem. Scripture offers a prayer that can help us crack open these dark corners of our hearts.
Everyone has struggled with the question - do I belong? You are not a second-rate, dollar store, discount disciple of Christ. You are not an outsider, you are not excluded, you are part of the family, you are fellow a fellow citizen. No matter who you are, where you’ve come from or what you’ve done…You belong…

Jesus is the ultimate high definition, 4K, crystal clear, highest resolution, zoomed all the way in, large print, vivid, clearest, in full-living-color, undeniably best representation of God! Jesus it the context for God. Jesus is the character of God. Jesus is the Heart of God!
It's not just "How are you doing?" It's "How do you tell how you are doing?" How do we evaluate how we are doing? This can be tricky in all areas of life, including discipleship. If you're interested in figuring out how to assess your discipleship...listen in!
A disciple isn't a pro-Christian or the heavy-duty version of a follower of Christ...a disciple is a Christian. However, we might not all be on the same page as to what disciple means, is or does. When we think "disciple" we need to think three words Discover/Desire/Do
When it comes to church it's so easy (and tempting) to criticize. Honestly, there's lots to criticize - it's kind of low-hanging fruit. However, when we remember that the organizing principle of the church is that we're a group of imperfect people who are being remodeled by Christ, it changes things. It's kind of silly to point out all the unfinished parts of a home that is being built. In the same way, it's counterproductive to walk through the church with a negative, cynical mindset. Instead, as the church, we're called to pick up tools and build this thing!
THE BOYS ARE BACK!! Season 2 is starting off HOT. The boys are joined by Patrick as they discuss fits, the summer, the pod's future, and of course Mr Peanut. Enjoy!
There aren't many things that we want to think about less but that influence our thinking more than death. What we believe about what is next has a huge impact on how we behave now. What would our lives look like if we truly lived with hope?
Sometimes we want Christianity to be simple, easy-to-follow, turn by turn directions. However, Discipleship is often directional. We navigate toward Christ-likeness through the particulars of our own lives. Learning how to plot our course toward Jesus.
We probably don't often ask - "Why do the right thing?" But when we don't often have a good answer past, "...because it's right." The New Testament almost always talks about something different and it's often the difference between making it and messing up.
We like to think of ourselves as being people of principle when sometimes we're just being stubborn. How do we tell the difference between being obstinate and standing firm? And why is it so important to our faith?
The church in Thessalonica, by all accounts, should never have made it. Paul had come to the city to start a church but accidentally started a riot and got chased out of town after just a couple of weeks. All the good church-planting manuals will tell you that this isn’t going to last. Yet when Paul hears from the brand-new Christians, not only are they still hanging in there, they’re thriving! Join us as we explore the, qualities, beliefs and practices that are the different between disciples barely making it and and making a difference!
The number one most asked question on a road trip is - "Are we there yet?" We all want to have a sense of progress. We want to know if we're getting close to our goal. Discipleship is no different. If we can't see the finish line it's easy to get discouraged. We are going to use our recent Mexico Mission Trip to highlight how discipleship isn't only about progress but perseverance. (Due to technical difficulties, Paul Maynard's part of presentation wasn't recorded. You can track him down in person and get a recap.)

Feelings of confusion, discouragement and being overwhelmed aren't uncommon for Christians. If these are left unchecked we can find ourselves on the verge of giving up on church, faith and even God. Here's the truth, there is hope! Paul the Apostle points us to something we need to do or gain but to something we already have!
We have a pretty strained relationship with death. The English language has about 100 different wants to avoid even saying the word. However, one of the basic ways the resurrection of Jesus should transform our lives is without our relationship with the Great Unknown. If Jesus came back, we can believe we will too.
Sin isn't something fun that God is just keeping us from - sin is something deadly God is protecting us from. Because of the resurrection, the relational dynamic we have with sin has completely changed - Sin, even the sin in your life, is just a bully and you can say no!
There's a pervasive misconception that Christianity is mostly about keeping some difficult, maybe impossible and definitely outdated, rules. But that idea doesn't come from the Bible itself. The early Christian writers had experienced an incredible shift in what life was all about. The resurrection life is not about achieving something that needs to be done, it’s about adjusting to something that has already been done.
Most of us have experienced tragedy that deeply affected us and made us shift our thinking about the world and the way it works. As a result, we may have become guarded and more fearful. Jesus spoke to people that didn’t think the world was the way it should be and he gave them what, at first glance, seems like strange advice. He told them that the way to a better life was by “serving everyone”, “loving your enemies” and even “losing your life”.This doesn’t just seem counter-intuitive, it seems crazy. But Jesus was about to do something that validated the crazy things he taught people to do. Jesus was going to shift the world once again.
Sometimes we find ourselves struggling with living the values and ethics of the Kingdom - not because we’re not sure what Jesus said to do, but because we’re pretty sure that it’s not going to get us the results we want. Jesus continued to live the values of the Kingdom right up till his death. What we discover is that even death can’t stop the impact of this way of life!
In a well plotted story there’s usually an “aha” moment where the different parts of the plot begin to come together. The Passover meal was a moment steeped in very specific, ancient tradition. Jesus comes along and simultaneously fulfills and transforms this practice. What emerges is a shocking truth about God’s ultimate plan to create a Kingdom of imperfect people.
We all have areas in our lives where we want to have absolute control. But, when we invite Jesus into our lives as King, he's going to want to make some changes. What do we do when our lives and the Kingdom of God come into conflict? Join us as we dive into a fascinating story that just about got Jesus arrested as he establish his Kingdom and asserted his authority as King.
Sometimes we don't pray because we're afraid God won't answer. If God doesn't answer it brings up uncomfortable questions about God and faith. We don't quit praying, we just make vague, open-ended requests where, no matter the outcome, we can interpret it as a positive answer. What if we asked more of God? What would we discover about prayer and the character of God if we brought Him everything?
Jesus taught his followers about prayer by modeling prayer for them. The way Jesus taught prayer revolves largely around a shift in perspective. Our culture teaches to think about ourselves first and foremost. But the way Jesus taught us to pray focuses us first on God and then on others. Talking to God the way Jesus taught us to is about a reorientation in the way we see and interact with the world.
2/3/19 As central as prayer is, in the entire bible there is arguably only one place where we get clear, specific, detailed instructions on how to pray. We call this section of Jesus’ teaching from the Sermon on the Mount - the Lord’s Prayer. Trying to piece together the different advice about prayer can create a little confusion about how prayer works. Case in point, when Jesus sits down to teach his followers how to pray, he starts off with two recommendations about what NOT to do. How can we get through these questions to a place where we encounter God and His power in prayer?
What’s is going on when those of us who claim to follow Christ struggle to live like Christ? Jesus said the problem began, not in the moment when we fell short of our own expectations, but much further upstream - in our hearts. The author of Proverbs wrote we have to protect our hearts because what is in our hearts directs our lives. We are often unaware of some of the half-truths, desires and sin that creep into our hearts and shape our choices and, eventually, our lives. What does it mean to guard our hearts?
1/13/19 In our day and age, the term “evil” is reserved for big, bad, dark stuff in the world. However, Jesus uses that exact word to describe what is in our hearts. He told us we could identify the evil in the heart by what comes out of us - particularly the words we say. But we immediately run into a dilemma - our hearts don’t like to admit that there’s even a problem. Jeremiah says, that our hearts will even deceive us. How do we deal with those things that lurk in the dark corners of our heart?
1/6/19 From the very beginning God has been interested in our hearts. Our hearts are the command center of our lives. We often try to change simply by learning or willing ourselves to be different but, unless our transformation engages our heart, the chances of success are pretty dim. What does the bible teach us about how to transform our hearts? And, what if changing our heart is the key to everything else?
12/2/18 An angel told Mary that she was ‘favored’ by God. Then Mary’s life immediately got more difficult. The question isn’t only - How do we see grace in the midst of hardship? The question is - How can we see my hardship as God’s grace?
The secret to life isn’t really a secret. It’s just that it’s difficult and feels dangerous and most of us want to play it safe. Most of us get that life isn’t about financial security. Happiness isn’t about stuff. But, for a variety of reasons, most of us still get caught up wanting more money and more stuff. Or, just as bad, we find ourselves clinging just little too tightly to our money, or valuing our stuff just a little too much. This manifests itself in working just a little bit longer than we should and keeping other people at arms length. And, before we know it, we’ve missed out on life.
Richard Valentine, Patrick Doherty, Nigel Saunders and Will Charles discuss the ins and outs of live television, from switching cameras every few seconds to racing to hair and makeup between scenes. Live the drama with this gripping masterclass!
If you've been around the Church of Christ you may have noticed - we like baptism! But sometimes, lost in the endless debates, is the reality of a relationship with God. God lives in us!
9/30/18 The truth about who Jesus was and what he taught about life has the power to transform anyone. It is unlike anything else the world has ever seen. Like Peter said, there’s no where else to go, Jesus has the “words of life”.
9/23/18 We often conceptualize God as something distant and other. If we want to know what God is like our best chance to get to know Jesus. He was the in-the-flesh walking, talking vision of God.
9/9/18 In Jesus was life. People were drawn to him because he offered something people weren’t finding anywhere else. People left their jobs midshift. People chased him down when he tried to get away. People followed him out into the desert. Jesus was captivating. When we learn about him we are compelled to follow him.
8/19/18 Sometimes our minds and our hearts tell us that we are not good enough, and we can begin to believe that this is what Jesus is saying to us as well. What if Jesus was saying something else?
8/12/18 You would think that if Jesus were speaking we'd have no problem listening. But there were people to whom Jesus couldn't get through. How can we be sure we're tuned in to the voice of Jesus?
