Journalist, novelist, and memoirist Omar El Akkad talks about his latest book, One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This – a blend of memoir, social criticism, and moral philosophy. The book creates and shares space for everyone who is full of grief and rage, who cannot be at home in institutions that support or ignore genocide. We discuss the linguistic obfuscations around Gaza, El Akkad's critique of Western liberalism, and the possibilities for a different future.Show notes:You can get One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This from Penguin Random House, where a sample of the audiobook is available, read by Omar El Akkad.Omar's first novel, American War, is also available from Penguin Random. You can subscribe to BULAQ wherever you get your podcasts.
What's the purpose of poetry anyway? In these troubling times of ecological challenge, political vitriol, and social unrest, it's easy to wonder about the value of the arts in all forms. But for Susan Goldsmith Wooldridge, the answer is simple. Poetry isn't merely a distraction from the world, it's a necessary element of surviving in it. She sees herself as living between the worlds, the one our bodies inhabit and the one from where poems come. She's dedicated much of her adult life to inviting others to join her in a world of words, taking poetry out of its rooms in high towers and making it accessible to anyone. Susan's book, Poemcrazy: Freeing Your Life with Words (now in its 30th Crown/Random House printing) was number 7 on a Penguin Random list of the best books on writing. Anne Lamott wrote, “This is a wonderful book—smart, wide-eyed, joyful, helpful, inspiring. You're going to love it, and love writing poetry more for having read it.” Susan has held workshops on journals, creative writing and collage with thousands of adults and children and has worked in over 80 rural libraries in sessions sponsored by Poets & Writers Org. Susan has a chapbook of poems, Bathing with Ants, and a book on creativity and collage, Foolsgold: Making Something from Nothing and Freeing Your Creative Process (Crown).

Economics textbooks tell us humans created money to overcome the drawbacks of barter. If your chicken wasn’t worth someone’s bushel of grain, you had no bread and they had no meat. Anthropologists see things differently. Markets didn’t necessarily come first, they say. In fact, they argue, it’s the money we use that determines the type of society we live in. In the latest New Money Review podcast, ‘the future of money in 30 minutes’, anthropologist and historian Brett Scott talks about the origins of money, debt and finance. Scott is an author and a campaigner for alternative financial and monetary systems. His latest book, ‘Cloud Money’, will be published in 2021 by Penguin Random and Harper Collins. In the podcast, Scott explains why anthropologists approach the topic of money quite differently from economists. “Anthropologists ask, ‘how do people provision for themselves in the world?’” says Scott. “But economists start by saying ‘how do people trade?’,” he says. “And the way economists view money starts from the assumption that trade is the default in all societies, whereas anthropologists don’t assume that.” “Anthropologists would say that money creates markets, whereas economists would say that markets precede money.” In the podcast, Scott discusses: the origins of money monetary systems and modern market capitalism the ideological roots of cryptocurrency bitcoin and commodity money the hybridisation of traditional and crypto finance local currencies and community money decentralised mutual credit systems bigtechs and money the battle to preserve cash
