Even before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, preventive services, diagnostics, and treatments for pediatric HIV lagged far behind the comparable tools for adult populations. Recognizing that progress had stalled, in 2017 the Vatican convened leaders from pharmaceutical companies, regulatory agencies, research institutions, and community organizations to align interests and identify new areas for collaboration. This series of discussions gave rise to the Rome Action Plan, a rights-based partnership that has served as an accountability mechanism to generate higher-quality services for children living with HIV globally. In this episode of AIDS2021, Katherine E. Bliss speaks to Chip Lyons, President and CEO of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation; and Monsignor Robert Vitillo, Attaché at the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the UN in Geneva and Secretary General of the International Catholic Migration Commission to discuss the how the commitments made under the Rome Action Plan have advanced progress for children living with HIV and how that partnership model can be adapted for the Covid-19 crisis and used to drive innovation in the years to come.

My latest guest is Archbishop Bernardito Auza, Apostolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the Organization of American States. Born in Talibon, Republic of the Philippines in 1959, he was ordained as a priest for the Diocese of Tagbilaran on June 29, 1985, and incardinated to the newly created Diocese of Talibon in 1986. He earned his doctorate in Theology and entered into the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1990. Archbishop Auza has served at the Apostolic Nunciature in Madagascar, Bulgaria, and Albania. He subsequently served in the Secretariat of State in the Vatican, and from there was appointed to the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations. In 2008, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti, and was ordained Titular Archbishop of Suacia. He was appointed Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York on July 1, 2014, and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the Organization of American States on July 16, 2014. Father Roger J. Landry is a priest of the Diocese of Fall River, Massachusetts, who works for the Holy See’s Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations. After receiving a biology degree from Harvard College, he studied for the priesthood in Maryland, Toronto and for several years in Rome. After being ordained a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Fall River by Bishop Sean O’Malley, OFM Cap. in 1999, he returned to Rome to complete graduate work in Moral Theology and Bioethics at the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family. Fr. Landry writes for many Catholic publications, including The National Catholic Register and The Anchor, the weekly newspaper of the Diocese of Fall River, for which he was the executive editor and editorial writer from 2005-2012. He regularly leads pilgrimages to Rome, the Holy Land, Christian Europe and other sacred destinations and preaches several retreats a year for priests, seminarians, religious and lay faithful. He speaks widely on the thought of Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis, especially John Paul II’s Theology of the Body.
