Still bristling with gladness the day after attending the new Holy Father's inauguration Mass, Fr Joseph delivers Part 2 of his look the Pope's namesake, Leo the Great. Fr Joseph Hamilton is the Rector of the Domus Australia in Rome, and a priest of the Archdiocese of Sydney Australia. Prior to his appointment at Domus, he served as private secretary to George Cardinal Pell, until the Cardinal's untimely death. DescriptionIn the wake of the news this week of Pope Francis' death, I immediately wondered what we could do here at Better Preach to honor his legacy, teaching and example - particularly around Preaching. For a while I wanted to do a dive into his first major letter to the Church, the Joy of the Gospel, from 2013, and look closely at his lengthy section in that document on homiletics. And thanks to Fr. Craig Vasek, who joined me way back in the beginning on episode 2 of Better Preach, he agreed to join me again at the last minute here to look back at Pope Francis' longest magisterial teaching on Preaching. Father Craig Vasek currently serves as pastor of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. Ordained in 2010 as a priest of the Diocese of Crookston, Minnesota, Fr. Vasek is a graduate of the Pontifical North American College in Vatican City, having obtained a Licentiate of Sacred Theology in 2011. Father Vasek has worked extensively with the Missionaries of Charity of Saint Teresa of Calcutta in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. He has produced works on the topics of Scripture and the Spiritual Life, and served as Specialist for the National Eucharist Revival with the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.Check out Fr. "If it's a true call from God to become a priest, you're not gonna be able to shake it. He's gonna keep coming for you." Fr. David Kidd, Director of Diocesan Priestly Vocations for the Diocese of Toledo, joins Men of the Hearts hosts Fr. Craig Giera and Fr. Drew Mabee to talk about his journey to the priesthood. Looking back, he realizes God started preparing him for the priesthood when he was an altar server in childhood, but his path detoured through college, dating, and a deployment overseas before finally leading him to the doorstep of the Pontifical College Josephinum seminary in Columbus. He shares how five years studying in Rome opened his eyes to the universality and longevity of our faith and offers his advice to men discerning the call to priesthood in their own lives.(0:27) Hosts Fr. Craig Giera and Fr. Drew Mabee introduce their guest this month, Fr. David Kidd, Director of Diocesan Priestly Vocations for the Diocese of Toledo. Fr. Drew kicks off the episode by sharing that his parish recently finished The Rescue Project with the community's young adults, spending a few weeks in small groups “unpacking the Lordship of Jesus.” Fr. David then shares some recent blessings in his life. (10:52) Fr. Drew shares some recent events at his parish, including Lenten penance services, Alpha gatherings, and Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger's installation as Archbishop of Detroit. Fr. Craig hosted a discernment weekend attended by men from the Archdiocese of Detroit as well as other nearby dioceses, while also working on an art project he plans to submit to Divine Child High School's upcoming art show.(16:45) Fr. Craig asks for Fr. David's vocation story. Fr. David is the oldest of four children and grew up in Lima, Ohio. He reflects on his experience as an altar server, through which he says God began preparing him for the life of a priest. He first considered the priesthood in senior year of high school, after visiting the Pontifical College Josephinum seminary in Columbus. He became more serious about his discernment in college, shortly before being deployed to Kuwait with the National Guard. (27:49) While in Kuwait, Fr. David regularly attended Mass on base, where a chaplain sensed his possible vocation to the priesthood. While home on R&R, Fr. David finally met with the vocations director and submitted an application to seminary just two days before returning overseas. (37:56) After Fr. David received his Bachelor's in Philosophy in Columbus, his bishop invited him to further his studies at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, Italy. He recalls getting a strong sense of the universal Church sharing classes with students from all over the world. He also remembers being in awe visiting churches older than the United States: “People have been living and dying for this faith for a long time.” (50:05) While Fr. David never seriously doubted his vocation during his five years in Rome, he did struggle being away from family without regular visits for so long. This challenge helped him develop his relationship with God, trusting in Him and in His plan—leaning on God rather than on his own abilities. He then offers his advice to men discerning the priesthood: take small steps in your discernment, like developing good prayer habits, getting a spiritual director, visiting a seminary, going on retreat, reading spiritual books, and journaling. “All those little steps along the way bring clarity.”(57:48) Fr. Craig thanks Fr. David for joining, and Fr. David closes the episode with a prayer.

In the interview segment of Vatican Insider on this first weekend of June 2024, I reprise an earlier conversation with Fr. David Hulshof, director of Apostolic Formation at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. This weekend is Part II. Part I aired last weekend There are a number of apostolates that are mandatory for all seminarians during their formation years such as working with the poor and homeless, with refugees, visiting patients in hospitals, being a guide in St. Peter's Basilica and working in an Italian parish. Fr. David explains the apostolates offered at NAC, and you will revel in his passion and joy for the priesthood, the apostolates and especially for the current class of seminarians. And you will feel very positive about the future pastors of the Church in America! As the website of the North American College notes about these apostolates: In each of the five parishes, seminarians are teaching religious education, preparing children for the sacraments of the church, assisting at Mass, and some opportunities for preaching. St. Galla is an Italian speaking parish, St. Maria in Monserrato is the Spanish speaking parish, and St. Patrick's is the English language parish. Seminarians bring comfort to the elderly, sick and poor at four locations in the Eternal City. They serve in soup kitchens and visit with the poor on the streets. Others minister in a local prison and at a refugee center. Our men also evangelize by leading tours with pilgrims to St. Peter's Basilica and St. Paul's Outside the Walls. They assist the USCCB Visitor's Office in Rome and offer Scavi tours of the excavations beneath St. Peter's.

You must tune in this weekend to listen to my two special guests in the interview segment as they talk of their call to the priesthood – what they feel, what they expect but most importantly, the very joy they feel at the mere idea of being a priest! My guests are two remarkable young men, seminarians at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, Nicholas Monnin and Patrick Ernst, both of the diocese of Fort Wayne -South Bend. We met during the October 2023 synod on synodality when I invited to dinner Bishop Kevin Rhoades of Fort Wayne, Patrick and Nicholas and two Fort Wayne priests studying at NAC, Fathers Zane Langenbrunner and Samuel Anderson. Patrick and Nicholas will enthral you with their vocation stories and you'll have a very positive feeling about the future of the Church! The logical conclusion to a great conversation was to continue talking over dinner at La Vittoria!|

My special guest this first weekend in June on Vatican Insider's interview segment is Fr. David Hulshof, director of Apostolic Formation at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. Part I of our conversation aired last weekend. There are a number of apostolates that are mandatory for all seminarians during their formation years such as working with the poor and homeless, with refugees, visiting patients in hospitals, being a guide in St. Peter's Basilica and working in an Italian parish. Fr. David explains the apostolates offered at NAC, and you will revel in his passion and joy for the priesthood, the apostolates and especially for the current class of seminarians. In this photo, Fr. David (l) was one of three guests at the May edition of EWTN's Roman Nights that took place in the historic Palazzo Grillo that overlooks the Roman Forum. The theme chosen for the gathering was “Charity Within the Church and Given by the Church.” Guest speakers were Ambassador Antonio Zanardi Landi of the Order of Malta to the Holy See, Dr. Alessandro Pernigo, of the Board of Directors for the Bio Medico University Campus of Roma, and Fr. David.

After the news segment of this week's Vatican Insider is Part II of my special guest in the interview segment, Fr. Peter John Cameron, O.P. Many of you know him from his years as editor-in-chief of Magnificat but there's so much more to his story. Born in Rhode Island, raised in Connecticut, he was ordained a Dominican priest in 1986. For 24 years, Father Cameron taught homiletics at St. Joseph's Seminary in Dunwoodie, New York, and three other seminaries. He is now in Rome and currently holds the Carl J. Peter Chair of Homiletics at the Pontifical North American College in Rome where we spoke last week. Homilies are our main focus, of course but the entire conversation is riveting, especially when you learn of Father Peter's theatre background and how that helped him prepare and deliver homilies! Lots of insightful, compelling stories, including on the length of a homily – fascinating! – and the difference between a homily and a sermon. So don't miss that conversation!
