Oh, and here's our index of all episode in one concisepage Running Sheet: Pleasing You Was Important At John Martin's 00:00:00 Intro Introduction 00:00:00 SA Drink Of The Week No SA Drink Of The Week this week. 00:02:45 Paul Flavel, Author, John Martin's The Story Of South Australia's Beloved Department Store In this episode, Steve Davis sat down with author Paul Flavel to delve into the rich history of John Martin's, South Australia's beloved department store that graced the retail landscape for over 130 years until its closure in 1998. Paul's new book, John Martin's: The Story of South Australia's Beloved Department Store, is the first comprehensive documentation of this iconic institution, lovingly dedicated to his grandmother—a personal link that fuels his passion for the store's legacy. We explore dramatic moments in John Martin's history, starting with the devastating fire on Easter Sunday in 1901, when a display of wax figurines representing the Rock of Ages caught fire, spreading rapidly through the store. Despite such challenges, including enduring the Great Depression and two World Wars, John Martin's remained a cornerstone of the South Australian community. Paul shares how John Martin's stirs vivid memories in the subconscious of South Australians. For many, it was a place of first jobs straight out of school, the magic of the annual Christmas Pageant—a wonderful institution that brought joy to families—and staff picnics that fostered a sense of loyalty and connection among employees. These traditions remind us of a time when working for a company meant being part of a community. We reminisce about the charming "lift ladies" and other quirky characters that made shopping at John Martin's a unique experience. The conversation includes some funny stories, and even some romantic tales reminiscent of Are You Being Served?, like Steve's unrequited romance with the stationery girl, and anecdotes about his colleagues like Debbie, Sharon, and the West Lakes' stores version of Mr Peacock. We also touch on the iconic "Miss JM" and miniskirs, along with the store's brush with fame during The Beatles' visit. The conversation turns reflective as we examine whether, as consumers, we played a part in the store's demise. The introduction of bank credit cards in Australia gave shoppers more freedom, reducing reliance on department store credit systems—once a significant part of John Martin's business model. The rise of national retailers like Myer, and discount stores such as Kmart and Target, intensified competition, challenging John Martin's ability to compete. We discuss how these factors, along with the sale and rebranding of various store locations, signaled the end of an era. Finally, we contemplate whether a store like John Martin's could succeed in today's retail environment. Paul shares insights from his extensive research and reflects on how consumer behavior and the retail landscape have evolved. Is there still a place for the loyalty and community that John Martin's fostered, or have we moved beyond that model? Join us for a nostalgic journey through the history of John Martin's, filled with personal stories, historical insights, and reflections on the store's enduring legacy in South Australia. 00:57:45 Musical Pilgrimage In the Musical Pilgrimage, we feature To You Merry Christmas by Peter Combe. In 1989, Peter wrote a song for a John Martin's Christmas Pageant competition, called ‘To You Merry Christmas'. Although he didn't win the competition that year, he did later release the song as part of a Christmas album which reached the ARIA top charts and it went gold within five weeks of its release in 1990. Ironically, it outlived John Martin's. In 2022, Peter was one of the celebrity performers at the Christmas Carols event and rode in the "National Pharmacies" Christmas Pageant as part of the promotion. National Pharmacies is the current title sponsor of the event, which is managed by Events South Australia. Peter has a new album waiting in the wings, A Frog in My Cheese Sandwich, and we're told that if we wash our face in orange juice and clean our teeth with bubble gum, he'll be happy to join us for a full episode.Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode I chat with Peter Combe (who has just been awarded the OAM) about his beginnings as a primary classroom teacher, his advice on what makes a great children's song, his work over his 38 year career as composer and performer of songs for both children and adults and his views on primary music and singing.Episode highlights include:Peter’s primary classroom and music teacher origins.Hosting Music Time in the UK.Why we still need such a program. What makes a successful children’s song and why Peter’s songs have achieved longevity. The origin of Spaghetti Bolognaise.Peter’s 18+ concerts (Big Kids Night Out).Peter’s Adelaide Fringe shows.Using elemental musical cocepts in children’s songs.Children’s singing keys. The importance of singing for children.About PeterPeter Combe started as a primary school classroom teacher in 1969, moving shortly after into music teaching. By the late 70s he was writing and performing songs for both children and adults and decided to move the family to England to see where his career might take him.In England he presented the classic BBC school music program Music Time which was aired also in Australia by the ABC. Returning to Australia, Peter pioneered the recording of albums for children that consisted of new songs (rather than nursery rhymes and old favourites). He also pioneered the making of video clips for children – the first being Toffee Apple. His Radio National radio show Ticklepot was voted best children’s radio program in the world in New York 1991.Peter has performed in schools, pubs, clubs, concert halls, has sold out the Sydney Opera House (twice) and the Melbourne Concert Hall, has appeared at Carols in the Domain and other capital city Carols nights … and regularly performs his children’s songs in pubs full of adoring adults who turn up to sing along with the soundtrack of their childhood. Yet another first for children’s songs.Peter’s albums have won 3 ARIA awards, plus 7 gold and 3 platinum awards. And on Australia Day 2020, Peter was awarded the OAM. And deservedly so. He has elevated the status, not only of children’s songs, but also the importance of music in children’s lives and the importance of those who provide the music education.Peter made time in late 2019 to share his insights into children’s songs and music education. You’re going to enjoy listening to the man who gave us Mr Clicketty Cane, Toffee Apple, Spaghetti Bolognaise, Newspaper Mama, Christmas albums and Snugglepot and Cuddlepie the musical. Also in this episode:A recipe from film composer Ennio MorriconiA teaching tip video on storing music teaching resources from Alison Lunnon. https://youtu.be/0eTvwfBuft4

Some of the first music I ever loved in my life was that of Peter Combe. My parents purchased Toffee Apple on vinyl before I was in school. I still love many songs on that record today. In the last three days I’ve both seen Peter live in concert and now spoken with him, face to face, on the virtues of happiness. It’s a brief chat, but it’s insightful. Peter’s most well known songs are targeted towards children. Over time these children grow up, and I was one of many who was able to have a couple of beers whilst dancing and singing away with songs such as Spaghetti Bolognese and Newspaper Mama.I was fascinated to hear his thoughts on happiness and how that of kids differs to that of adults. We talk songwriting, war and a whole lot more. Join us!Recorded in the foyer of the bustling Hawthorn Town Hall, I hope you perceive the cafe background ambience as pleasant! I noticed that for the second time in three episodes I’ve mentioned Andrew Bolt…….I can’t promise that it won’t happen again but it has been noted!!!The folk singers of the sixties such as Peter Paul & Mary, Simon & Garfunkel form the core of Peter’s musical influences and you’ll catch their works in the updated Ever-growing Playlist of Joy, which you can follow on Spotify.
In the 80s and 90s Peter Combe was a king among children! So what made his songs so catchy and why are grown adults still singing them today? Peter also has some great advise for children's music performers wanting to break the big time. Then is gets heavy with Adelaide rockers Walking With Thieves.
