Sitting down with artist/musician Amanda Wirig as we dissect Peter Jackson's 'Get Back,' delving into the band's journey from Twickenham Studios to the iconic rooftop concert. A casual and fun breakdown of the documentary between a new Beatles fan and one that has grown up with them all her life. We discuss the previous untold stories, dynamics, and the magic that shaped this legendary chapter of music history as featured in Jackson's "Get Back" documentary, currently showing on Disney+ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tossingsaladpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tossingsaladpodcast/support
Docn' is back! This lost episode was taped two years ago upon the holiday season release of Peter Jackson's Get Back. Divided into thirds and running nearly eight hours, Get Back is a look at the beginning of the end of the Beatles. The documentary is doubly successful: first, it complicates and challenges the conventional narrative for why the band broke up (Yoko, bickering) while establishing entirely new questions about what was really happening between these four bandmates. We watch as an arbitrary deadline - for a film, or show, or movie, or something - slowly approaches. The Beatles are then forced to decide if they will continue on at all - and, if so, how. What's surprising about Get Back is how enjoyable it really is to see one of the most over-scrutinized musical acts of the 21st century simply being…themselves. George is often self-deprecating and brittle; Paul is intensively creative and ambitious; John is an endless cutup; Ringo is hungover and/or hesitant. But when they all go up on that roof, the reservations and mythos crumble. Joining us to talk Beatles for this very special episode is Leah Churner, co-host of The Horticulturati, a talk show about landscape design and gardening. Docn' Podcast also celebrates the release of Chalk Diary, a collection of essays by our very own Adam Schragin!
Erin and Karen discuss Peter Jackson's Get Back documentary in the context of its contemporary relevance in Beatles historiography and in comparison the the 1970 Let It Be Docmentary and other related works.

Ken's a world authority and he's been on the pod twice before, talking about his books about George Martin and the last days of John Lennon. He's just revised and updated the one he wrote in 2007, ‘Long And Winding Roads', partly to add new observations and material, especially in the light of Peter Jackson's Get Back, and partly because the beleaguered world now needs the Beatles more than ever. It's written like a literary biography, as much about the art as the story. This covers the waterfront - thoughts about their deal with EMI, pivotal events in their trajectory, the recent re-evaluation of McCartney (“the convenor”), the gorgeous “guitar embroideries in the margins of their music”, the key role of Mal Evans (“found crying in McCartney's garden when he heard it was all over”), the artistic touchstones of I Am The Walrus and the sheer and comforting delight in hearing the Beatles' music - “returning to the font” - when the world finds itself in times of trouble. As well as being a writer and historian, Ken is Professor of Popular Music at Monmouth University in New Jersey and you'd kill to be in his class. Our second bonus episode while we take a month vacation! If you want to hear a whole bunch of these bonus episodes, go to our Patreon and check us out! In the meantime, here's a sampler: Our amazing and quite difficult look at Peter Jackson's "Get Back," a documentary that corrects the record but also is way way wayyyyyy too long!
Producer/engineer Alan Parsons is the guy wearing the orange shirt, black tie and striped jacket in Peter Jackson's “Get Back” documentary about The Beatles. Alan worked for Abbey Road Studios at the time, and explains what his role in the rooftop concert was, how he first met The Beatles, what he learned from Producer George Martin and longtime Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick, and how The Beatles were in the studio during the making of the “Abbey Road” album. Alan also engineered the Pink Floyd masterpiece, “Dark Side Of The Moon,” and shares the stories behind creating the incredible sound effects for “Time” and “Money,” and the echoey vocals on “Us And Them.” He comments on Mike Myers using the Alan Parsons Project in the Austin Powers movie, scoring his first hit record with the band Pilot, and what inspired him to start his own band, The Alan Parsons Project. Plus, Alan has details about his brand-new solo studio album, “From the New World,” which is available now wherever you buy or stream music.
Today's special episode features our good friends from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, here to discuss their new exhibition, The Beatles: Get Back to Let It Be. Designed to serve as an immersive complement to Peter Jackson's Get Back docuseries, the groundbreaking exhibition allows fans to experience The Beatles' creative journey through original instruments, clothing, and handwritten lyrics used by The Beatles and seen in the film. Artifacts include items loaned directly by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the estates of George Harrison and John Lennon. The exhibit features high-definition film clips, audio, and custom projections, transporting fans into The Beatles' vibrant world of January 1969. Fans will also enjoy audio engineer, producer, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Glyn Johns' record acetate from the sessions and iconic photography by Linda McCartney and by Ethan Russell, who documented the band's January 1969 rehearsals, sessions, and rooftop performance, and whose photos are featured in the Let It Be album art. As with Jackson's Get Back docuseries, the exhibit shows how The Beatles composed and recorded many of their iconic songs from scratch. The exhibit's three screening rooms feature a selection of footage from each location from the docuseries: Twickenham, Apple Studios, and the Apple Corps rooftop. Ken's first guest is Greg Harris, President & CEO of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Prior to serving in his current role, Greg worked as a senior executive at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum for 14 years. Ken is also joined by Nwaka Onwusa, the Rock Hall's Chief Curator & Vice President of Curatorial Affairs. Prior to joining the Rock Hall in 2019, Nwaka spent a decade researching, developing and curating more than 20 full-scale exhibits for The GRAMMY Museum at L.A. Last year, Twelve Songs did its first crossover episode with Jonathan and Julia Pretus of the Ranking the Beatles podcast. During the COVID shutdown in 2020, Jonathan took the time on his hands as an excuse to rank all of The Beatles' songs, from his least favorite to his favorite. That list morphed from a Facebook conversation into a podcast with his wife Julia as the voice of reason. Since The Beatles didn't release any true Christmas songs during their time together, last year we ranked the annual fan club-only releases, testing Julia's patience in the process. This year, we got together for a second crossover, this time ranking their post-Beatles Christmas music. Julia had reached a saturation point between watching, discussing, and podcasting about Peter Jackson's Get Back and opted for a badly needed night off. Jonathan and I discussed the obvious choices by John and Paul as well as less obvious ones from George and Ringo. If you like what hear, you might consider adding Ranking The Beatles to your podcast feed. Thanks as usual to our sponsors at Car Floats, who asked me to contribute a Christmas music playlist to their website. I'm pleased to have curated a number of playlists this season including the 23-hour “Twelve Songs of Christmas Radio” playlist on Spotify. Go to it and click Shuffle to get the all-Christmas radio experience but with a greater variety of music. You can also still get this year's downloadable listeners-only playlist by writing me at alex@myspiltmilk.com to request it. If you haven't already done so, please do what you have to do to get Twelve Songs in your podcast feed. You can find us at Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Pandora, and Spotify.
There have been countless Beatles documentaries over the years, but none quite like Peter Jackson's "Get Back." Now streaming on Disney Plus, it's an epic miniseries reconsidering the band's most turbulent year, and Nathan Weinbender says it's an unearthed treasure for any fan. The History of Rock N Roll Part VII - Don't Let Me Down: Peter Jackson's Get Back On this week's episode, Mr. Chavez & I sit down to discuss Peter Jackson's Get Back, an eight-hour Disney+ documentary series chronicling the making of The Beatles Let It Be. There's a whole lot to take down in these viewings, but we look at it as important to understanding the History of Rock N Roll. Take a listen as we get into the artistry of creating, the frustrations, jealousies, and triumphs that accompany art. It's a good talk. We hope you'll join us. Take it off! Wait, leave some on! In anticipation of the continuing delay of Peter Jackson's Get Back film, T.J. and Tony react to the recent Vanity Fair teaser about said project, then delve into the first revisionist history attempt of The Beatles swan song, 2003's Let It Be... Naked. They dissect the merits and flaws of these stripped down "newer phase" mixes, and reveal which bits they prefer clothed. Meanwhile, Tony impresses T.J. with his Star Wars knowledge, T.J. impresses non-listeners with his musical theatre knowledge, and the two explore Harry Caray backwards masking, Rappin' Rodney and the cola wars. As always our producer Casey comes to the rescue with any trivia T.J. and Tony deem too difficult to google. We hope you dig this episode as much as you dig a pony or a pygmy… Naked.
