Greetings, My Friends. In my own journey, I have learned that success is not always a sign that we are on the right path. In fact, it is often in moments of achievement that we are most vulnerable to drifting away from God's best for us. My encouragement to you, drawn from years of walking with the Lord, is this: seek God above all else. As 2 Chronicles 26:5 reminds us, intimacy with Him is the true foundation for lasting purpose, wise leadership, and the forward momentum He desires for your life and career.Let us look together at 2 Chronicles 26:5 and the account of King Uzziah. Scripture tells us, “As long as he sought the Lord, God prospered him.” I have seen this truth play out in my own life and in the lives of many leaders I have mentored. Uzziah's growth was directly connected to his pursuit of God and the wise counsel of Zechariah, a spiritual advisor who understood God's vision. When that accountability faded, pride entered, and what seemed like unstoppable success became a sobering warning. This lesson is vital for every Christian leader who desires to walk in biblical prosperity and remain grounded as God opens new doors.I encourage you to put these truths into practice through spiritual disciplines that have shaped my own walk with God: seek Him first in every decision, trust Him wholeheartedly rather than relying on your own understanding, and always acknowledge that every good thing comes from His hand. Surround yourself with wise counsel, especially as God brings success, and you will see His faithfulness in every season.Tony WilliamsSend Tony a Texthttps://www.seldicompany.com/

This week's Book Club might be our most divided one yet because we finally read A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) by Sarah J. Maas. One of us loved the fantasy world, the romance, and the drama and some of us absolutely could not get past the growling, the flowery language, and the “sheathing” scene. We also get into why fantasy resonates so deeply with readers, the appeal of escapism, and how books like this become gateway reads for people who normally don't read at all. A Bit of Optimism
Revisited: Choose Your Seven Humans Wisely with Author Fredrik Backman

A Bit of Optimism

Play Episode Listen Later May 26, 2026 58:07

Hello from Team Simon! We're taking a quick break this week and will be back with brand-new episodes of A Bit of Optimism next Tuesday.  Until then, we're revisiting one of our favorite episodes — when bestselling novelist Fredrik Backman joined the show to talk about the thing he's spent his whole career writing about: the quiet, radical power of showing up for people. And Fredrik says great friendships aren't found by luck. They're built deliberately, repeatedly, and, sometimes, inconveniently by people who choose to do the work. Fredrik is the internationally bestselling author of A Man Called Ove (adapted into the film A Man Called Otto), Anxious People, and the Beartown series. His book, My Friends, is a love letter to the relationships that quietly shape who we become. In this conversation, Fredrik opens up about his best friend of over 30 years and what 30 years of real friendship actually requires. His words will have you thinking hard about the friends you might be taking for granted. In this episode you'll learn:  ➡️ Why great friendship is a skill + what the work actually looks like  ➡️ The concept of your "people” vs. “humans"  ➡️ Why your friends are your best editors ➡️ The friendship rule that changed how Fredrik's entire friend group thought about relationships ➡️ The unexpected value of quantity of time vs. quality of time  ➡️ How to be genuinely happy for someone else  ➡️ The difference between healthy self-deprecation and low self-esteem  ➡️ Why the work in a relationship is never solely on the relationship — it's always on you A great relationship isn't a stroke of luck. It's a choice you make every day, in small ways, often when it's inconvenient. This conversation is a reminder of why it's worth it. Our closets may seem mundane, but they're actually the perfect place to do genuine spiritual work. What is your closet saying about you? And is your current wardrobe a true representation of how you want to feel in the world? As we wander through the budding forest, imagine confronting your chaotic closet and whittling it down to only the pieces that speak to the style in your soul. What am I reading? My Friends by Fredrik Backmanhttps://bookshop.org/a/111301/9781982112820The Wisdom of the Enneagram:The Complete Guide to Psychological and Spiritual Growth for the Nine Personality Typesby Don Richard Ross & Russ Hudsonhttps://bookshop.org/a/111301/9780553378207https://bookshop.org/shop/witchywomanwalkingWhat am I playing on repeat? Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ TopWhat is for dinner?Honey Garlic Sausage and Sweet Potato Sheet Pan DinnerIngredients: 14 ounces of pre-cooked sausage 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped into 1-inch cubes1 large head of broccoli, cut into bite-sized florets.1 tablespoon olive oilSalt and Pepper to taste Honey Garlic Sauce:¼ cup honey¼ cup of low-sodium soy sauce or tamari or coconut aminos4 cloves, minced1 tbsp apple cider vinegar1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon of water to create a slurry for thickening.Instructions:Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Greetings, My Friends. The core message is this: our only true help and strength comes from the Lord, not from our own self-effort. In Christian leadership, spiritual growth, and setting God-centered goals, we are reminded that dependence on God is essential. This message encourages us to root our vision, work, family, and calling in God's power. Ephesians 3:16 reminds us that true strength and clarity come from spiritual empowerment, not from our own resources. Instead of relying on self-generated confidence, regularly pause to seek God's strength and guidance before decisions or challenges, recognizing that all true empowerment comes from Him.Invite the Holy Spirit into your routines. Start tasks and respond to challenges by praying for wisdom, renewing your mindset, and trusting the Spirit's guidance. This episode calls us to live from the inside out: the Holy Spirit's power fuels our action. Depend on God's strength, not your own, for clarity and effectiveness in daily life.Remember, God loves you unconditionally.Tony WilliamsSend Tony a Texthttps://www.seldicompany.com/

My guests on this episode are part of a pilot for a potential new series called “Woodstockers”. The show will have its world premiere at SxSW beginning today, Saturday, March 14. On this episode is the show runner and cast members Corbin Bernsen (“LA Law”, “My Friends and Neighbors), director Oliver Bernsen and cast member, and very recent podcast guest, Stephen Tobolowsky (“Groundhog Day”, “Memento”). https://youtu.be/eIH0MpklhHQ In the summer of ’69, Lenny Baker and his best friend Calvin Reddick went to Woodstock. What they witnessed there changed their lives, so much so that they decided to never go home again. Armed with a vision of a new path forward, they built a life in upstate New York alongside Rebecca and Lizzy, two women they met at the festival and married soon after. Decades of willful detachment followed, but every trip has its comedown. Now, more than half a century later and with his marriage up in smoke, Lenny is forced to face a hard truth: the better world they once envisioned never quite arrived… and if it ever does, he won’t be around to see it. Calvin’s sudden death makes that painfully clear.
