We're dancin' to the rhythm in our heart and soul, cuz it's S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night on O3L! This week, we're all about the songs and albums that soundtrack our Saturday nights. And, yeah, we've got a Saturday Night Fever, and the only cure is... More FLASHCUBES! That's right...our Third Lads this week are bassist Gary Frenay and guitarist Paul Armstrong, one half of Power Pop Hall of Famers The Flashcubes! Gary and Paul, along with guitarist Arty Lenin and drummer Tommy Allen, burst out of Syracuse, NY in 1977. During their initial lifespan of 1977-1980, they released two singles, the classics "Christi Girl" and "Wait Til Next Week," and opened for major acts such as The Runaways, Ramones, The Jam and The Police. (In the case of the latter, here's a "true until proven otherwise" theory for you: Stewart Copeland is wearing a Flashcubes t-shirt on the cover of Regatta de Blanc.) Since the original foursome reformed in the late '90s as powerful and poppy as ever, they haven't looked back, with a string of acclaimed albums and a reputation as a world-class live act. The Flashcubes' latest album on Big Stir Records is Pop Masters, which finds our heroes tackling a selection of 12 guitar pop classics by their contemporaries, with an impressive roster of guest stars, including Pezband's "Baby It's Cold Outside" (with past O3L guest Mimi Betinis), Shoes' "Tomorrow Night" (with another past O3L guest, Jeff Murphy), The Paley Brothers' "Come Out And Play" and more. This is a must have for any power pop connoisseur! Plus, we unveil the latest world famous O3L game: Which Saturday Is It?, in which our discerning contestants distinguish between Saturday Night Fever quotes, Saturday Night Live lines, and lyrics from songs called "Saturday Night." In this week's sparkling, poptastic O3L, we tackle our Top 5 (mostly) American (mostly) Power Pop Songs of the '70s. Our Third Lad is a true '70s Power Pop hero - singer, songwriter and guitarist from Pezband, Mimi Betinis. Pezband released three albums chock full of melodic pop and explosive rock n' roll during their original run: Pezband (1977), Laughing In The Dark (1978), and Cover To Cover (1979). In the 21st century, Mimi has continued to write and record solo material, performed with Pezband, and worked on reissues, unreleased material, and remixes. During the show, Mimi treats us to two Pezband treasures: their last ever recording, a 2016 cover of Chuck Berry's "Memphis, Tennessee," and a sneak peek into an upcoming best of project with a remix of their classic "Baby It's Cold Outside." Pezband were inducted into the Power Pop Hall of Fame in 2018. Yeah, there's gonna be a couple of choices that will have discerning power pop purists crying "That's NOT Power Pop!" Speaking of which, that's also the name of the game where Mimi and Uncle Gregg face off to determine what's power pop...and what's NOT. This one is fizzy, bubbly and refreshing. So play on! This episode is dedicated to the memory of Pezband drummer Mick Rain, who we lost to COVID on August 14, 2021. Rest In Peace and Rock On, Mick. #musicpodcast #musicpodcas ts #powerpop #1stwave #classicalternative #disco #pezband #mickrain #newwave #rickenbacker #oakpark

Although best known as a producer, Clive Langer's short-lived group Clive Langer & the Boxes put out an exceptional EP on Radar Records in 1979 and a full-length on F-Beat the following year. In this episode, we also talk to Mr. Langer about his time with the Liverpool-based Deaf School, the seminal punk group Big In Japan, and his later production work alongside Alan Winstanley. ---Despite seminal releases from Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello, Radar Records has not retained the same sort of cultural cache as concurrent labels like Stiff, Bomp!, or Ork. Despite its short lifespan (1978-1981) and relative obscurity today, a deeper look into Radar’s discography reveals a fascinating blend of cutting-edge British punk and new wave (Yachts, Bram Tchaikovsky), ahead-of-their-time American imports (Good Rats, Pezband, Pere Ubu), and new material from rockabilly and psychedelic pioneers (Ray Campi, Red Krayola). One off-singles from Richard Hell and the Soft Boys, as well as French pioneers Métal Urbain, are still indispensable today. The end result is a body of work much more consistent and cohesive than other labels were able to manage. For every Radar album that broke into the mainstream—namely the “big four” of Jesus of Cool, Labour of Lust, This Year’s Model, and Armed Forces—there are several albums equally-deserving of a modern reappraisal. Clive Langer & the Boxes' I Want The Whole World is one of those releases.

Pezband was an American power pop band formed in 1971 in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, Illinois. The ensemble began in the fall of 1971 when four Oak Park musicians teamed up to jam on covers of songs by The Yardbirds, Kinks and Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac. The original lineup consisted of Mimi Betinis (guitar and lead vocals), Mick Rain (drums and vocals), John Pazdan (guitar, piano and vocals), and Mike Gorman (bass and vocals).

Today, we’ve got one from the vaults as Mike Vanderbilt talk with Chicago power pop luminary, John Pazdan. Pazdan was one of the founders of Oak Park’s premiere power pop act Pezband in 1971. Pazdan—primarily a bass player—played around town in numerous jazz, rock, and pop outfits including Chicago favorites Off Broadway. This interview was conducted in the spring of 2016 as Mike was preparing his Chicago Reader piece From Rockford To You An Oral history of Cheap Trick’s early years. Pazdan is currently playing with Pezband along side Mimi Betinis and Mick Rain and they will be appearing at The Arcada Theater Friday August 11th along side Dwight Twilley and Zion’s own Shoes. It was a fun chat and I hope you enjoy listening.
This week on The Drinks On Monday interview, Mike chats with Mimi Betinis, singer/guitar player/songwriter from Oak Park power pop legends, Pezband. Mike and Mimi dig into the new Pezband EP, WOMEN & POLITICS as well as Pezband's days of playing the clubs around the Chicago suburbs throughout the '70s.
John Pazdan was a founding member of two of the greatest power pop bands of the 70s. He formed Pezband, but left before their first album came out (he would rejoin in the 80s). He and singer Cliff Johnson left to form Off Broadway, but he only stuck around for that band's debut album, which spawned the #51 US single "Stay in Time" in 1979. In the 90s he was a member of the cowpunk band Big Guitars From Memphis, who were relatively successful at the time, but has mostly been lost to history. Since then John has made a living as a gun for hire and has composed and arranged loads of tunes for various multi-media projects, and still plays around the Chicago area when he's asked, including gigs playing for President Obama. He is a wonderfully outspoken and opinionated artist and we discuss his views on the treatment of musicians, how they're paid, and the state of the business today.
