Colvin, who at 107 years old is not only the founder of Literacy Volunteers of America, but also a Presidential Medal of Freedom Honoree. Ruth tells the story of her amazing journey from Syracuse, New York, to becoming a worldwide literacy advocate.As Ruth discusses her many years of expertise running literacy initiatives and her role as the organization's founder, listen in. Ruth Colvin '59, H'84, the founder of Literacy Volunteers of America (now ProLiteracy), has traveled the world in pursuit of knowledge. She is a proud lifelong learner, the recipient of Presidential Medal of Freedom and a member of the National Women's Hall of Fame. At 103 years old, Ruth still golfs and walks 2,000 steps a day, as tracked by her iPhone. She recently published a memoir: My Travels Through Life, Love and Literacy. In this 'Cuse Conversation, Ruth shares some of her stories, secrets and the significance of her lifelong connection to Syracuse University.

Today on the show, I am chatting with another old college buddy of mine, Mr. Todd Evans.  He is the Director of Professional Development with ProLiteracy based out of Syracuse NY. Todd and I talk about our college days at Memphis State and how they prepared us for who we are today, his desire to educate the voting population, and how we as a community, can help adults learn to read. And for me, Adult Literacy is a very personal topic. There is an estimated 36 million adults in the U.S.—and almost 800 million worldwide—struggle with basic reading, writing and math skills. These individuals struggle daily to read a menu, fill out a job application, or even read a bedtime story to their children. ProLiteracy removes the hurdles that stand in the way of their goals. ProLiteracy is the largest adult literacy and basic education membership organization in the nation, they believe that a safer, stronger, and more sustainable society starts with an educated adult population.  For more than 60 years, ProLiteracy has been working across the globe to change lives and communities through the power of literacy.  ______  Friends I really hope you enjoyed today's conversation with Mr. Todd Evans. What about the small things?    I have mentioned in an earlier episode of Daggers Of The Mind that it seems most of us blaze through life oblivious to the amazing wealth of information flowing over us like a river. Once you find what it is, grab it, feed it, nurture it, and never let it go. They're always just turning on the television, but reading a good book is the most nourishing thing you can do.”   Before there was television or movies, before pictures moved on the screen and told you what to think, there were books. A book is an amazing exercise in the creative part of your brain. When you read a story, instead of being shown everything, your brain automatically begins to supply the details and fleshes out the scene described. These mental gymnastics that are so good for us now lay dormant much of the time.   We have given up the creative in order to just observe and be led along a path of someone else’s choosing. Instead of allowing our imaginations to supply the details we are told about, we just have it laid in our laps, very tidy and easy to consume. Not very good for expanding your mind and imagination.   Reading is such an amazing ability, and we forget how wonderful it is. But for others, it’s not so great.   Sometimes it is easy to forget that there are many in our society who never learned to read. I have a hard time imagining what it would be like to look at words that didn’t automatically read for me. What kind of world would that be where all this gibberish was everywhere and you couldn’t tell what was being said?   There are literacy programs that can help adults who never learned how to read. I think these are wonderful, but I think a way to stop the cycle is to instill a LOVE of reading in children. If you get them to a place that they want to read on their own without being forced as a school assignment, it is enough to change their lives forever.
