Neil Young's most successful solo album is also considered his signature album. Harvest was Young's fourth solo studio album, and it topped the Billboard 200 chart in the US for two weeks while also spawning two top 40 singles. Young grew up in Winnipeg, Canada, and began playing and songwriting there in several groups. His first success as a songwriter came for a song he wrote for The Guess Who which made it to the top 40 in Canada. He was in the Mynah Birds, a Toronto group fronted by a young Rick James. The Mynah Birds were attempting to get signed by Motown when James was arrested for being AWOL from the Navy reserves. Shortly after this, Neil Young and bassist Bruce Palmer sold the group's equipment, bought a hearse, and used it to move to Los Angeles. He then worked as a session musician and a member of Buffalo Springfield before striking out on his own solo work while also joining Crosby, Stills & Nash.Harvest was written after an acoustic tour the previous year, a tour prompted by a back injury Young sustained that required him to play sitting down for an extended time. The album contains significant acoustic elements, as several tracks he played on that tour would appear on the album. Many of the lyrics are related to Young's growing relationship with actress Carrie Snodgress. Young was a success before recording this album, and was able to bring in a number of session musicians on several tracks including Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, and the London Symphony Orchestra.Surprisingly, the album met mixed reviews when released, though over time the critics' assessments would turn much more positive. The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015.Wayne brings us this California country-tinged album for this week's podcast. Heart of GoldOne of the tracks that arose from Neil Young's acoustic tour, this song topped the charts in the United States and Canada, and went to number 10 in the UK. Despite its success, Young had mixed feelings about the popularity he gained from the song. Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor provided backing vocals on this track. The lyrics talk about a man who may be overthinking life, searching for something just beyond his grasp.Old ManThe origin of this song was an encounter that Neil Young had with the caretaker of the Broken Arrow Ranch, which Young purchased in 1970. The old caretaker was not pleased with the young (literally) hippie-looking Young purchasing the place, and this song's lyrics talk about how the two of them were not that different.AlabamaA continuation of a diatribe from Young's “Southern Man,” this track condemns the racism of the white people in Alabama specifically, and the southern United States in general. Neil Young would eventually come to see the lyrics as too accusatory, and too easy to misconstrue as a general condemnation of all Southerners. The Needle and the Damage DoneThe inspiration for this song was a number of musicians whom Young had observed as they fell apart due to heroin addiction. More specifically, Young wrote this song about bandmate Danny Whitten, whom Young had to let go from his tour due to his heroin use. Whitten would die of an overdose shortly thereafter.ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Cabaret by Liza Minnelli (from the motion picture “Cabaret”)Minnelli stars in this period musical drama based on the Broadway show, set in Germany before World War II. STAFF PICKS:Mother and Child Reunion by Paul SimonRob leads off the staff picks with a one of the earlier rock songs with reggae influences. The song was written in response to a Jimmy Cliff song in which a mother receives a letter that her son had been killed in battle in Vietnam. It was also inspired by Simon's loss of his dog. The title was inspired by a menu item in a Chinese restaurant in New York - chicken and eggs - entitled “Mother and Child Reunion.”I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing (In Perfect Harmony) by the New SeekersBruce brings us a hit song which originally appeared as a commercial jingle. Coca-Cola produced an ad called “hilltop” featuring young people of various races coming together over a Coke. The success prompted a rewrite of the jingle into a full-length song, dropping the product references. It became a big hit for both the New Seekers who recorded the radio jingle, and the Hillside Singers who recorded the television commercial.Let's Stay Together by Al GreenLynch features the song which hit the top of the US singles charts, and was named number one R&B song on the Billboard Year-end chart for 1972. It has been covered by a number of artists, with Tina Turner being the most prominent. It was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. Do You Know What I Mean by Lee MichaelsWayne's closes out the staff picks with a song about a girl that a guy lost to his best friend after taking her for granted. It reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Lee Michaels came out of the San Francisco music scene, originally as a surf band before moving into a more "blue eyed soul" direction. Van Halen opened for Lee Michaels at the Whiskey a Go Go in 1977. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Joy (feat. Tom Parker) by Apollo 100This jazz instrumental covers the baroque chorale "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" by J.S. Bach. Lizzo is asking for the Los Angeles Superior Court to dismiss the harassment charges against her dropped with prejudice. Her legal team says that if the charges are not dropped, they request a trial with a jury to prove their innocence. Beyoncé's Houston stop on her tour has come with surprises, but there was one thing that was supposed to happen, which was a Destiny's Child reunion. Rumors say that Destiny's Child was supposed to sing on stage with Beyoncé but it was said that the voices of some of the other members weren't up to par. I'll never forget the day I found myself in the doctor's office and he said “don't give me the roundabout, mister can't you see?”. My response was “doctor my eyes, last night I didn't get to sleep at all, can you just give me something to help me make it through the night!”. He then said, “I betcha' by golly wow, no problem, I gotcha!”. Whatever it was he gave me worked. I awoke after a sound sleep to the rockin' robin letting me know that morning has broken. All families have secrets. The big one in my family, at least for me anyway, was the fact that my older brother Greg was adopted. When I was in high school, I was sitting in room with extended family and my auntie Joan, who really wasn't my aunt but rather a very close friend of my mother, said to me, “You know, you are very special Michael because you are the first-born son of the family.” This was an odd comment as I knew that A. Auntie Joan was aware of my brother Gregory who is 9 years my senior and B. that she wasn't off her rocker. When I asked, “What about Greg?” I saw her face go pale and she pretended to have forgotten about him. Later that night, on the way to dinner, my mother and father told me that Greg was adopted as a way of explaining Auntie Joan's comment. I turned to my twin brother Jimmy (I was older by a minute, therefore technically was the first-born son) and he said, “Mia told me years ago.” Apparently, I was the only one who didn't know. This walk down memory lane is relevant to today's guest, author Laura Engel, who joined me to talk about her book You'll Forget This Ever Happened: Secrets, Shame, and Adoption in the 1960s. MEET LAURA ENGEL Laura L. Engel likes to say she is late to the game as a budding new author. Originally from Biloxi, Mississippi, Laura has lived in Southern California for over 50 years. She and her husband, Gene are the proud parents of six grown children along with their significant others. They are delighted to be Grammy and PaPa to ten grandchildren. What was it like giving up a child for adoption when she was just a teenager? How did her birth son track her down? What emotions did she experience when setting her eyes on him for the first time? Find out the answers to these questions and the heartbreaking lie she was told which inspired the title of her book. Laura's emotional memoir can be purchased at Amazon, Bookshop.org, or ask for it wherever you buy books. Mere weeks after covering its successor in the Baby Doe Parentage Saga, the Randomizer selected “Undercover Mother” (Season 16, Episode 15) for the Munchie Boys to cover. Undercover Mother is frankly an insufficient moniker to give this episode, as another mother goes undercover for our undercover mother, along with most of the rest of the Unit. Insanity reins supreme as SVU's undercover op interferes with Declan Murphy's own undercover op, one in which he's working on taking down the brutal Johnny D but not without showing that he's in so deep that he's basically a human trafficker himself. We talk the careers of Lili Taylor and Donal Logue, the history of the defunct Creedmoor Psychiatric Center, Eric Adams's purported sleep schedule, SVU's love for undercover ops, and much, much more. There is no distance too far that Jesus is not willing to overcome. No heart so broken that Jesus can't heal. No relationship so dead that He is not able to restore. We can take hope in knowing Jesus is willing and able to help us in any and all areas of our lives. Join Pastor Mark Williams for this message, "Jesus and the Mother and Child Reunion".
To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/640/29 There are many women who have lost a child, either by their own sin of choosing to give up that life or by other causes. Though it should not be the reasoning for becoming a Christian so as to see a child who has passed from this world to be with God, there is hope for mothers who follow Christ that they will once again be reunited with their children who have gone to be with the Lord.
The loss of a child brings with it immeasurable grief. But for all who put their trust in Jesus, death doesn't get the final say. Whether before birth or after, through the sin of abortion or through circumstances beyond any control, faith offers a promise of hope for every mother who follows Christ that they'll be reunited with their child in Heaven again one day.

On this episode I take a look at a number of key Gen X era musicians who dabbled in or experimented with playing ska and reggae music before they went on to have huge star making careers. While kids in the UK lived next door to Jamaican neighbors and were accustomed to hearing reggae music all the time, there was no corresponding culture or experience with the genre here in the U.S. Occasionally a song like “My Boy Lollipop” or “The Israelites” or “Mother and Child Reunion” would end up on Top 40 radio in the 60s or 70s, but it was rare. But that began to change in the late 70s and early 80s when notable British musicians and bands like The Clash, The Police, Elvis Costello, and Joe Jackson -- began to incorporate the rhythms of ska and reggae into their songwriting and these songs began to find a receptive audience here in the U.S. And as the sound of ska and reggae expanded, more American bands began to experiment. So let's have some fun. I'll play a ska or reggae song by three of these future Gen X superstars and you see if you can guess who they are. If any musical justification were needed for the breakup of Simon & Garfunkel, it could be found on this striking collection, Paul Simon's post-split debut. From the opening cut, "Mother and Child Reunion" (a Top Ten hit), Simon, who had snuck several subtle musical explorations into the generally conservative S&G sound, broke free. -AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann

Label: Columbia 45547Year: 1972Condition: M-Last Price: $10.00. Not currently available for sale.Paul Simon was one of the first non-Reggae artists to flirt with the reggae sound, and this is a damned good experiment, if you ask me! I'm always shocked to hear the incredibly powerful Stereo mix that they pressed these 7-inch releases with: Loud is simply not sufficient to describe the enormity of what's in these little grooves. Collector nerd alert: This is the original release on the red/orange Columbia label. Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Columbia Records factory sleeve. It has Mint labels, and the audio sounds pristine despite some scuffing on the vinyl (styrene)!
It's the 2nd Quarter of 1999! Apparently I listened to a lot of Elton John (yeah!) and Billy Joel (mehh). A diverse list of #1's! Song list: "Gold" by John Stewart, "Swingtown"/"Jungle Love" by Steve Miller Band, "19th Nervous Breakdown" by the Rolling Stones, "Steppin' Out" by Joe Jackson, "The Bitch is Back" by Elton John, "Allentown"/"Pressure" by Billy Joel, "Mother and Child Reunion" by Paul Simon, "Who Wears These Shoes" by Elton John, and "A Matter of Trust" by Billy Joel. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/musicismyradar/support

Paul Simon is one of the great American entertainers—a mantle he's worn since he started singing harmony with grade-school friend Art Garfunkel in a duo called Tom & Jerry. In the following six decades, Simon has written dozens of classic songs. His partnership with Garfunkel produced numerous hits like "The Sound of Silence," "America," and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." And Simon's solo career has been equally fruitful, as an engine of eclectic pop music (the gospel of "Loves Me Like a Rock," or the imported reggae of "Mother and Child Reunion"), and also as an ambassador of global sounds (the 1986 album Graceland, and 1990's The Rhythm of the Saints). He talks to host Alec Baldwin about how he has—and hasn't—changed after all these years. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

Music Legend Paul Simon “I was eating in a Chinese restaurant downtown. There was a dish called Mother and Child Reunion. It’s chicken and eggs. And I said, I gotta use that one.” Have you ever looked down into your plate of food and gotten inspired? Most people feel inspiration in a sunrise, the ocean, a storm, or some other mighty and grandiose thing. What about the small things? I have mentioned in an earlier episode of Daggers Of The Mind that it seems most of us blaze through life oblivious to the amazing wealth of information flowing over us like a river. If we tune in to it, so much new knowledge and yes, inspiration could be available. Daggers Of The Mind Episode 15 A quote from another song writer: “Inspiration is hard to come by. You have to take it where you find it.” Bob Dylan My source of inspiration is not going to be the same as yours. Identifying what your source is, is vitally important. Once you find what it is, grab it, feed it, nurture it, and never let it go. Your inspiration can be a powerful force to keep you going when everything else seems to be going to pot around you. Pablo Picasso “Inspiration exists, but it has to find us working.” Being inspired is great, but using it as a tool for accomplishment is its ultimate end. Put your inspiration into action. Picasso painted, I like to write and podcast, some enjoy making something with their hands, or solving some problem that has been plaguing them for a while. Inspiration greases the skids to accomplishment, but to actually accomplish, you must get up and go for it. In the very first episode of Daggers Of The Mind, the quote from Charles Shaughnessy was that his wife was his greatest inspiration. I must say that this is also true of myself. Dee is my greatest supporter and friend, the love of my life. Our life together has been the greatest blessing of my existence. Daggers Of The Mind Episode 1 I’ve found my inspiration, now go find yours. It’s there just waiting for you! Paul Simon Official Website Paul Simon on Wikipedia ------------------------------------------ Actor Benedict Cumberbatch “People forget about books. They're always just turning on the television, but reading a good book is the most nourishing thing you can do.” Before there was television or movies, before pictures moved on the screen and told you what to think, there were books. A book is an amazing exercise in the creative part of your brain. When you read a story, instead of being shown everything, your brain automatically begins to supply the details and fleshes out the scene described. These mental gymnastics that are so good for us now lay dormant much of the time. We have given up the creative in order to just observe and be led along a path of someone else’s choosing. Instead of allowing our imaginations to supply the details we are told about, we just have it laid in our laps, very tidy and easy to consume. Not very good for expanding your mind and imagination. Reading is such an amazing ability, and we forget how wonderful it is. But for others, it’s not so great. Sometimes it is easy to forget that there are many in our society who never learned to read. I have a hard time imagining what it would be like to look at words that didn’t automatically read for me. What kind of world would that be where all this gibberish was everywhere and you couldn’t tell what was being said? There are literacy programs that can help adults who never learned how to read. I think these are wonderful, but I think a way to stop the cycle is to instill a LOVE of reading in children. If you get them to a place that they want to read on their own without being forced as a school assignment, it is enough to change their lives forever. That hunger for knowledge and mental stimulation will last a lifetime, and reading will supply the need. There will be a link in the show notes for ProLiteracy programs that you can contact to help in your community. Remember, reading is fun! Groucho Marx said, “Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend. Inside of dog, it’s too dark to read.” http://www.proliteracy.org/ http://www.benedictcumberbatch.co.uk/ Cumberbatchweb -Your unofficial guide to actor Benedict Cumberbatch Benedict Cumberbatch on The International Movie Database ----------------------------------- I would like to give a special thank you to Matt McWilliams for giving Daggers Of The Mind a 5 star review on iTunes. First off the Live Music Podcast Facebook fan count has increased its number to 96 and is incredibly close to my goal of 100 so thank you and welcome to the new fans. With any luck by the next podcast it'll be over that magic 100 number. With the timing of this episode it was pretty apparent to me that it was time to bring back an old favorite to the podcast. Most of you are probably aware that Bonnaroo happens around this time of year and also that Jack Johnson has a new release recently out called ‘To The Sea'. I thought it would be very fitting to feature his 2008 Bonnaroo recording which t features a tremendous set with amazing sound quality and even a guest appearance by Eddie Vedder. Not sure what more one could ask for, hope you enjoy it!Take the Live Music Podcast listener survey here!Jack Johnson - Manchester, TN - 6/14/08 Song Listing 1) All At Once 2) Better Together 3) Hope 4) Taylor 5) Flake 6) Sleep Through The Static 7) Staple It Together 8) Monsoon 9) Sitting, Waiting, Wishing 10) Constellations 11) Breakdown 12) Same Girl 13) Mother and Child Reunion > 14) Inaudible Melodies 15) If I Had Eyes Animal Liberation Orchestra - Isla Vista, CA - 4/24/04 Bonus Song Listing 1) Isla Vista Song 2) Girl, I Wanna Lay You Down 3) Valentine's Day 4) Easy Like Sunday Morning Support the artists by buying music and watching them live!
