No cold open today. Instead, we dive right into the topic of the day. We examine the current illiteracy crisis going on in the US and discuss a study done with English majors who were found to be unable to read or inadequate in understanding the opening to Charles Dickens' novel Bleak House.  We read the opening of Bleak House ourselves to see if we're capable of understanding it, and then, for fun, we read some pages of Ulysses by James Joyce to prove just how dumb we really are. Born in Trouble (July Ep. 1): Race Politics, DEI Myths, Social Media Brain Rot & the Future of Power Host John X reunites with Grant “City Wing King” Lancaster and Andrew Johnson (Men, Money and Marriage) for the first July episode of Born in Trouble, ranging from humor to a wide discussion on racism, Argentina's history and demographics, and how race narratives play out in the U.S. They debate backlash to casting Black actors in fictional and historical roles, argue that DEI is scapegoated while “white entitlement incompetence” is ignored, and share personal experiences with hiring and promotions. The conversation criticizes social media for amplifying poorly processed information, links declining literacy and screen-based schooling to reduced recall and conversation skills, and touches on voting challenges in rural Black communities in states like Mississippi amid demographic shifts. 00:00 July Episode Kickoff 01:39 Afro Banter Reunion 03:18 Argentina Race Talk 06:40 History Of Erasure 09:47 Casting Culture Wars 11:44 Jaylen Brown And Control 17:13 Umar And Interracial Fears 23:46 Social Media Brain Rot 27:20 DEI Myths And Reality 30:56 White Entitlement Incompetence 33:02 Degrees Aren't Intelligence 33:50 Illiteracy and Screen Learning 35:07 Phones and Keeping Kids Smart 36:31 Free Speech Shelf Life 37:34 Mississippi Justice and Racism 40:17 Demographics and Voting Power 44:25 Politics Bought and Sold 47:22 Jobs, AI, and K Economy 49:57 Near Death and No Patience 54:16 Youth Must Lead Change 56:58 Indoctrination and Culture Wars 01:01:21 Conversation and Closing Out 01:02:42 Stop Fearing Being Smart 01:05:06 Empathy as a Nation's Test

Send us Fan MailArtificial Intelligence is already transforming education, business, leadership, and society. But while schools debate AI cheating, plagiarism detection, and classroom policies, they're missing a far bigger problem: AI illiteracy. In this episode of Thinking 2 Think, Executive Director and High-Stakes Decision Advisor M.A. Aponte explores why the future belongs not to people who avoid AI—but to those who know how to think with it. The question is no longer whether students should use artificial intelligence. The question is whether they can evaluate it, challenge it, verify it, and build upon it. You'll discover: ✅ What AI literacy actually means—and why most people misunderstand it✅ The difference between AI fluency and AI literacy✅ Why AI cheating is the wrong conversation✅ The four cognitive skills every student must develop in the AI era✅ How schools can teach critical thinking alongside AI tools✅ Why prompt engineering alone is not enough✅ How parents can prepare children for an AI-driven future✅ The connection between AI literacy, leadership, and decision-making✅ Why organizations that develop AI-augmented thinkers will outperform competitors This episode explores the future of education, critical thinking, workforce readiness, leadership development, and artificial intelligence through the lens of one essential question: Are we teaching students how to use AI—or how to think with AI? Whether you're a parent, teacher, school administrator, entrepreneur, CEO, or lifelong learner, this conversation will challenge how you think about education and human intelligence in the age of artificial intelligence. Because in the future, the most valuable skill may not be knowing the answer. It may be knowing how to ask better questions. Think Clearly. Lead Boldly. Stay Logical. Support the showAbout the host: M.A. Aponte is a former JPMorgan banker, former Merrill Lynch wealth manager, former NYPD officer, Army Officer, and Executive Director of a Charter School in Florida. Fewer than 23% of Flemish children between 8 and 17 can identify a blackbird. Less than 5% can name a peacock butterfly. The mole scores highest — not because of nature education, but because it's a beloved character in children's stories.Nature isn't just disappearing from our landscapes. It's disappearing from our minds. In this episode, I sit down with Prof. Hans Van Dyck, behavioral ecologist at UCLouvain and head of the Behavioural Ecology and Conservation group, to talk about what happens to a species — and a society — when children grow up without meaningful contact with the living world. We get into the winners and losers of human-altered landscapes, and where Homo sapiens really sits on that spectrum. We talk about niche construction and its hidden cost — how we built a world for ourselves, and what we quietly subtracted in the process. Hans walks me through Robert Pyle's devastating 1978 concept of the "extinction of experience," and why disconnection compounds across generations. We get into shifting baselines — why each generation inherits a smaller idea of what "normal" nature looks like, without knowing it. And we talk about the move from nature blindness to biophobia: the teacher who brought tissues for children to clean their hands after touching plants, the teenagers who fled a butterfly on a café terrace, the children in hazmat suits at a tree-planting (a story Adrian Wong from SUGi first told me in S6E7).Hans also makes a compelling case for school yards as one of the highest-leverage interventions available to us — for biodiversity, for reduced bullying, and as an equalizer for children whose families can't drive to the countryside on weekends. And he reminds us that you don't need to know the name of a single species to do this work. Curious children are already doing it for us.Hans's December 2025 op-ed in De Standaard — "Children can no longer tell a blackbird from a sparrow" — is a wonderful companion to this conversation. He's also the author of Het orakel van de bosnimf. Van vlinders en mensen (Lannoo), and his scientific work is available on Google Scholar and ResearchGate.

Jenn speaks to Taiwanese Canadian founder Krave Yoga a yoga studied nestled in the heart of Taipei city. Born and raised in Taipei, Angie moved to Canada at the age of 8. The experience of being at the top of your class to suddenly being the student who was illiterate in a new environment taught Angie about resilience from an early age. She shares with us how feeling illiterate in an adopted country is a hard transition, the challenges she experienced, and the role her late grandmother played in her life which shaped her to become who she is today from law to a yoga studio owner. (Recorded on March 25, 2026) About Angie Yang Angie is the founder of Krave Yoga, a boutique studio in Taipei built on a simple belief: helping each person become who they want to be—by keeping them moving, physically and mentally. Her journey into yoga started with a class that felt incredibly hard and intimidating, but by the end, something shifted—her bad mood disappeared, and she realized yoga could transform not just the body, but also the mind. After moving to Taipei and not finding a space that truly felt like “coming home,” she created Krave Yoga: a no-mirrors, no-judgment space where you are welcomed exactly as you are, and supported to keep showing up, growing, and feeling better in your everyday life. Tariffs are up, but inflation is still holding steady. Job numbers are down, but the stock market is booming. Meanwhile, President Trump fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and he's pushing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to cut interest rates (he's also calling for Fed governor Lisa Cook to resign, but that began after our taping). MSNBC economic analyst Steven Rattner joins Kara to break down the contradictory and confusing economic news of late. Rattner is the chairman and CEO of Willett Advisors, the investment arm for former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's personal and philanthropic assets, and a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times. Kevin O'Leary, the chairman of O'Leary Ventures and the star of Shark Tank, joins FOX Business's Gerri Willis to discuss America's student debt crisis, the Trump administration forcing student loan borrowers to begin paying up again, and the economic impact of financial illiteracy.
