In this video, I discuss the translation difference between modern Bible versions and an old Bible version. Specifically, I compare the rendering in the New American Standard Bible (NASB), ESV, CSB, etc. and the King James Version (KJV) at 1st Peter 2:2. This might appear, at first glance, as a bit of a controversial difference. Here is the English translation and the Greek text for the Nestle-Aland 26th Edition (basis of the NASB) and the Textus Receptus (basis of the KJV):1st Peter 2:2 (KJV), “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:”(TR Greek) ὡς ἀρτιγέννητα βρέφη τὸ λογικὸν ἄδολον γάλα ἐπιποθήσατε ἵνα ἐν αὐτῷ αὐξηθῆτε1st Peter 2:2 (NASB 2020), “and like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation,”(NA26 Greek) ὡς ἀρτιγέννητα βρέφη τὸ λογικὸν ἄδολον γάλαἐπιποθήσατε, ἵνα ἐν αὐτῷ αὐξηθῆτε εἰς σωτηρίανThe additional two words in the NA26 are "εἰς σωτηρίαν", which are rendered by the NASB as "in respect to salvation," whereas the TR lacks these two words and is thus known as the shorter reading of the verse. The Conflict: The high priest demanded to know why they were still teaching in Jesus' name after being strictly forbidden to do so. The Response: Peter famously replied in Acts 5:29, "We ought to obey God rather than men." He then explained the gospel and concluded with verse 32, affirming that the Holy Spirit is a witness to these truths—and that this Spirit is given to those who obey God (specifically in the context of believing the Gospel and obeying the command to witness).     The pharisees were keeping the law, they had large portions of the OT memorized. They were the “Christians” of their day - but they lacked the power and witness of the Holy Spirit because they would not “hearken” to the Holy Spirits voice!

Today's question, "How should I read the Bible?" is often asked by new believers, church going people who've never read the Bible and those questioning what they've heard about the Bible. It is often stated this way:     ⁃    Which is the best Bible translation?     ⁃    Where should I start as I begin reading?     ⁃    What schedule should I follow?     ⁃    Where can I find extra help and resources? And the often not asked question, but should be asked:     ⁃    What are the essential things to remember? The Bible is the Word of God and is self authenticating, speaking to every generation. There are difficult parts and very clear parts. The Scriptures speak the Truth from God, and they are practical and very beneficial. Which translation? There is no perfect translation. Each translation works to capture what was originally written down to convey it's original meaning without translating word for word.     1.    New International Version  (NIV) - seeks to follow a literal translation      2.    English Standard Version (ESV)  - emphasizes word for word translation     3.    King James Version (KJV) - a favorite for centuries - a language different than today's modern day language, and is easily memorized     4.    New Living Translation (NLT) - seeks to convey the thoughts of Scripture versus a word for word translation - more easily understood     5.    New King James Version (NKJV) - attempts to keep the text and rhythm of the King James Version but in more modern language Pastor shares an example of each translation using Matthew 5:17. Where to start?     1.    Start with one of the Gospels (1 of the first 4 books of the New Testament) where we meet Jesus. Listen to what He says.     2.    Matthew - written from a Hebrew perspective - Prophesied Messiah.     3.    Mark - shortest of the 4 - speaks in dramatic terms and talks about the active Son of God - Mark offers lots of details.     4.    Luke (and Acts) - Jesus as the Savior of the Nations - Luke has a heart for the desperate.     5.    John - an insiders view of Jesus' ministry and teaching and covers what's not covered in the other gospels. John's focus is the Deity of Jesus Christ. However, the Greek word “thanatos” seems to be more correctly translated as “a sin that leads to death.”Verse 5:21            It was assumed that people in the Roman Empire would sacrifice to the idols, most especially to the Roman Emperor. In verse 21, the command to stay away from idols was a reminder that Christ is the only one worthy of our sacrifice. Second John 1-13 Verse 1            There are several ways to interpret the recipient(s) of the Second Epistle of John. One is to see the recipients as the elected ones. Another is that John was writing to a specific house church, the latter being the interpretation toward which Henry leans.Verse 2            The Greek word “alethea” (“truth”, “reality”) occurs frequently in this epistle (along with all the works of John in the Holy Scriptures). In its use here, it should be considered “Truth”, with a capital “T”. Verses 4 s& 6            Greek: “peripatountas”: “walk”, “walking”/ “behave”, “behaving”. The walk/walking is to be done in love: walk/conduct yourself/act in this way, and was a core concept for early Friends.  Verse 7              Greek: “sarx”: “flesh”; There were those who claimed that Christ had not come in the flesh, but only in the Spirit. The comments follow:  Verses 4:16-21   The word for “love” (used throughout 1 John) is the Koine Greek word, “agape”, an unconditional love which carries a strong sense of “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. In this kind of love, one doesn't wait for the other person to love, but instead, one should initiate the loving, open response.  The Greek word “teleios” translated as “perfect” in the King James Version (KJV) was correct for the English of that time, but has a very different meaning today, where it tends to be understood as completely  without any error. This process was complex and varied across different religious traditions, with the Catholic Church and the development of the King James Version (KJV) representing significant milestones in biblical canonical history. However, this process has provided possible data-loss as well as potential manipulation opportunities throughout the canonization process. In the context of the unique message of Jesus, there is an increasing recognition that his teachings, often presented in the "red letters" in some editions of the Bible, are extremely different and distinct from certain aspects of the Old Testament and even some teachings in the New Testament. Jesus' message often emphasized love, forgiveness, and a spiritual authority as ONE with God, which some believe appears in stark contrast to the elements found in the Old Testament and largely within the New Testament. The idea that Jesus' teaching stands alone, particularly in the red letters, is a perspective held by some who emphasize the distinctive nature of Christ's message, including Marcion of Sinope. Marcion proposed the idea that Jesus brought a new spiritual practice and a transformative understanding of God as the SOURCE, rather than a deity as observed by the status quo of his day. If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are." This verse explicitly states that believers themselves constitute the temple of God, highlighting the sanctity and importance of this spiritual dwelling place. However, some interpretations suggest that the temple here might symbolize believers, and the abomination causing desolation might signify spiritual / mind control corruption or defilement within believers themselves rather than a physical structure. The seed war concept, originating from passages like Genesis 3 and 5, emphasizes the ongoing spiritual battle between good and evil, symbolized by the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman. This theme of conflict between spiritual forces is further explored in biblical texts like Revelation 12, portraying a cosmic struggle between darkness and light. Viewing believers as the temple of God connects these themes, suggesting that the abomination causing desolation represents spiritual / dna corruption or defilement within individuals who are meant to be the dwelling place of God's spirit. This interpretation invites believers to consider the significance of personal spiritual integrity, purity, and faithfulness in maintaining the sanctity of the temple of God, which they themselves embody.
