On the advice of our legal team, which as regular listeners will know is a made up guy called Gary, we were advised to give this guest the chance to rebuke a serious accusation made against him by several previous guests on this podcast. So for the avoidance of doubt, SIMON LOGAN HAS NEVER THROWN A WHITEBOARD RUBBER AT ANYONE. Now that unpleasantness is out of the way... Simon was the guy on the Viking FM breakfast show when a fresh-faced young John Daniel Fox was travelling to college, drenched in Joop and wearing one of those colour-changing t-shirts. So, in the week that Viking FM celebrates its 40th birthday (and ceases to actually be Viking FM anymore, but let's not dwell on that), who better to get on than one of its legendary jocks. Simon may have been best known for his on-air wind up calls both in Hull and on Radio Aire in Leeds. In fact he put out a CD of the best wind ups and got into the top 20 of the actual album charts, sandwiched between two Britpop stalwarts! Most recently he's been plying his trade on BBC Radio Newcastle, a job that he got all by himself. But if a former Radio 1 legend had his way, he could have been his agent and taken a tidy 15%. More on that in the episode. And did you know he may have been the highest paid overnight guy ever? You will once you've listened. So many great stories and big laughs in this episode. Foxy's guest this episode is a former Whatnotter. You know, from the Saturday Whatnot on Essex Radio... No? If that's not ringing any bells, maybe you know him from his mere 26 years at Key 103 / Hits Radio. YES! That Mike Toolan! Of course he's one of the biggest names in the business and who's been on Radio Aire, BRMB and Capital, as well as an actual GENERATION on 103FM in Manchester, so won't need too much of an introduction. We'll just whet your appetite with some of the contents of our hour with him: Find out who he pretended to be to get on air in the USA. What word did he get someone to say that got him sacked from hospital radio. How he drove a colleague to turn up to his show armed with an actual gun! Who got the Radio 1 gig when he was down to the final two candidates. How he felt when he was replaced on breakfast with a former guest. And how he felt when he was reinstated. If that hasn't got your juices flowing, you're listening to the wrong podcast.   Listen to Mike on the Hits Radio network weekdays from 4: https://planetradio.co.uk/hits-radio/presenters/mike-toolan/ Classic Toolan here, including an incredible snoop from a 1993 Rock FM show: https://www.aircheckdownloads.com/audio-search?term=mike+toolan&sort_bef_combine=relevance_DESC Mike's Twitter:  https://twitter.com/Toolyboy

A greased eel. The fur of a chinchilla. A babies bum. When it comes to smoothness, this lot just aren't cutting the mustard, because Rossie's voice is smoother than an otter in socks, sliding down a lubed-up iceberg. But you don't have a CV like his by simply having a great voice. His claim that he's the only person Parky never called up on the XD to give the hairdryer treatment to is probably testament to that. He's had stints working at Radio City, Radio Aire and imperial phase Capital, but now hosts one of the biggest shows around, breakfast on Greatest Hits Radio. And with such an accomplished CV it makes sense that he's a brilliant story teller with brilliant stories to tell. Like the time he pinched a celebs booze stash at Party in the Park; how he almost didn't do his first show at Capital thanks to nerves; and an unfortunate (but hilarious) selfie incident. Bad things happen to them. At least you didn't... is a brand new weekly comedy podcast is full of real life funny stories about the hilariously awkward situations they have found themselves in. From falling in rivers to wearing slippers to a job interview, they've done the lot. Caroline and Annabelle met whilst working as radio presenters and producers at JACKfm in Oxfordshire and whilst Caroline got married, had kids and moved to Yorkshire to work at Radio Aire in Leeds, Annabelle moved in with her Gran. At the age of 30. Whether it's stories about bad dates, parenting mistakes or work disasters, this pair have it covered. Fully accessible and released every Tuesday but if you feel like you need more reminders of how great your life is, then you can find them on Facebook and Instagram sharing photos and videos of their tales of hilarious woe. Caroline Verdon 0:11  Those aren't random terrible things by the way, that you just never want to do. Those are very specific things that sadly, the pair of us have actually done. Hello. Welcome to our teaser trailer for "At least you didn't..." podcast. I'm Caroline Verdon. Annabelle Buckland 0:25  And I'm Annabelle Buckland and together well we're just we're basically a pair of walking disasters, aren't we, Caroline  Caroline Verdon 0:32  We met years ago and bonded over this. We were both radio presenters and producers. And we were just having a little chat one day and realised that the pair of us had done some terrible things. Yeah. Annabelle Buckland 0:45  So what we decided to do was, rather than never, ever tell another living soul about all these embarrassing anecdotes, we decided to share them with each other, and in turn with you. On a podcast that actual people might listen to. So what we did was we wrote down all of our terrible stories on little pieces of paper, folded them up and put them in a little bag, kind of like the worst tombola in the world. We switched bags of each other, drank a load of gin, and then proceeded to take them out one by one and tell our tales. Caroline Verdon 1:16  Those stories that was so humiliating that it was awkward, even telling each other and that should definitely never ever see the light of day again, they're the ones that we then decided, yeah, let's, let's stick that on the old podcast. Annabelle Buckland 1:29  You're welcome. Yeah. Caroline Verdon 1:33  Hopefully they'll just make you smile and feel a little bit cheerier about your own life. We also did something very important. Because we're nothing if not professional. We wrote a theme song. Annabelle Buckland 1:43  Yeah, and this, this might be the most terrible thing that either of us have ever done. And I don't know if you can actually call it a song.  SONG 1:51  At least you didn't kick a baby, tried to snog the vicar. At least you didn't show the binman your knickers. It could be worse. Annabelle Buckland 2:03  Yeah, you were definitely the the lead on that project weren't you Caroline,  Caroline Verdon 2:08  thanks very much. I'm quite happy to take credit for that. So our episodes are released weekly, every Tuesday. And you can also catch us on the old social media just search for at least you didn't. Annabelle Buckland 2:20  What would be amazing,...

From  a lucky traineeship through to managing the purchase of that very station and its neighbours three decades later, via the creation of UK brand-led radio. In this hour of 'Radio Moments - Conversations', Phil Riley opens up about his personal roots - and tells of his journey to BRMB. His business school spell in New York, prepared him for his first programme directorship as he created the new Xtra AM in the West Midlands. Poached to run struggling Radio Aire, he took that company to profitability and launched its successful Magic 828. Joining Chrysalis Radio as it began its activities proper in radio, Phil launched Heart in Birmingham and London, the first mainstream competitor to the early tier of commercial radio, and the first to roll out that brand and its values in multiple regions - paving the way for brand-led radio we witness today. Phil tells of the sale of Chrysalis Radio to become the foundation for Global Radio  and of his private equity-funded projects which, as Orion Media, were to result in the purchase of the stations in the Midlands shed by Global on their GCap acquisition. He opens up too about life since, including his role at Celador and in holding the reins at Bauer's newly acquired assets as they were instructed to hold-separate. Research and evidence-led - and one of the most respected executives in UK commercial radio this is the Phil Riley story - in his own words. I still remember my first look round a radio station. In spite of writing to Signal Radio in Stoke-on-Trent and being ignored (shame on you, Signal), Radio Aire in Leeds held an open day, and I got to look round the studios. I remember being amazed by the equipment, and was astonished at how great the jingles sounded on the decent studio monitors; and the equipment everywhere.   Do you need an on-site playout system? The BBC’s ViLOR solution for their local radio stations keeps the fancy studios, but moves all the playout equipment into a few regional centres - so, as a presenter on a local station, you’re not pressing “play” on a computer in the basement any more, but one a few hundred miles away. The benefits here are obvious - easier maintenance, more efficient air-conditioning, cheaper studio facilities.   Speaking at Next Radio, RCS’s Philippe Generali unveiled a cloud-based system (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SZc7SJWKZ8) called Raptor, that moves all of the playout software for a typical radio station into “the cloud”: so RCS look after the racks and the transmitter link, rather than your radio station.   Do you need a music library? OmniPlayer’s playout system (https://omniplayer.com/) uses Spotify (as well as your local audio) so you’ll have access to any song that you need, almost.   Do you need expensive soundproofed studios? A few years ago, I wrote about Vista Radio, a company that I’ve been proudly working with for the last two years, who don’t have radio studios (https://www.radioinfo.com.au/news/radio-stations-without-radio-studios) in their new facilities. Instead, their “open-air” studios are part of their office space. If you’re doing music programming, it’s unlikely you need the type of heavy soundproofing that legacy studios have; and if the only speech blocks are at breakfast, your office is quiet then anyway.   Do you need studios at all? For UK-based EDM station This Is Electric, their presenters are at home (https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/this-is-electric-broadcasts-from-the-cloud) , using their own home studio (typically, a USB microphone into a laptop), controlling the playout software which is hosted for them by the UK company Broadcast Radio. The station is on DAB and on the internet.   Do you need offices at all? Google’s G-Suite or Microsoft’s Office 365 offers all the functionality for office work, alongside planning systems like WideOrbit or Aquira. For most jobs, there’s little need for anything other than a web browser.   The team at Aiir, (https://www.aiir.com/) who do radio websites, apps and many more things, don’t have a head office at all: and all work remotely from home. There’s no reason to spend all that money on rent and office space if your team are all remote workers.   I’m now hearing about FM stations in the UK who operate entirely virtually - no offices at all, presenters doing their shows from home (both live and voicetracked), and all back-office work being done by home-workers on systems based in the cloud. Many sales operations already work this way.   The discussion in the US earlier this year was all about “the local studio rule”, but, it seems the discussion for some forward-looking radio stations is whether they need a building at all.
