IndieRE 60 – Radio Campus – Radio Pulsar (Poitiers, France) Hello, welcome to this new episode of IndieRE, the show that introduces you to emerging music across Europe. Today, we have a special slot from Radio Pulsar. Based in Poitiers, it is part of the Radio Campus France network. Thanks to RIM (the network of independent music in Nouvelle Aquitaine), Radio Pulsar was able to meet several regional artists. For its latest edition, Forma, the Forum of contemporary music of the RIM, a meeting for musicians and actors of current music in the South-West of France, were united in a recognized concert hall, the ‘Confort Moderne' in Poitiers. We were able to interview five singers and music groups of a variety of musical styles: punk, pop, electro, rap and French songs. During this hour we will take you on a journey to discover the diversity of modern music from our region. ______________________________________________________________ Phaon : And it is with Phaon that we open the ball. The quartet has already been spotted at a regional showcase. Phaon boasts an 80s pop influence and dark lyrics. Song : “Phaon - Lidice” Elektrik Girl : With her blue wig and her red dress, Electrik Girl does not go unnoticed! She got into music late on with the key motivation : make people dance! And if in passing she can slip in a militant message or two… Song : “Elektrik Girl - Consentement” Vahan : Through his soft voice, Vahan assumes his weaknesses. Vahan's music emphasises the key questions of our time such as gender and smartphone addiction… Song : “Vahan – Sans Téléphone” Skivers : the Skivers group was created by twin brothers who knew how to surround themselves with the right people. They claim punk as being - a state of mind, or even an art of living. Song : “Skivers - Brothers” Neilhuj : In the company of the last artist of this show, we go into the world of rap this time with Neilhuj. He is far from being a beginner in the industry, however with this new project, he explains that it is as if he were rediscovering himself. Song : “Neilhuj – Laissons Laissons” ______________________________________________________________ Here at the Radio Pulsar team, composed on this episode of Yann Suraud, Emma Crews, Andrew Menzies and Anaïs Greusard, we hope you have enjoyed these beautiful musical encounters. We thanks RIM for making them possible. In the next episode, IndieRe will take you to Ljubljana! Military Broadcast Radio principal Joel Hunt is an Army Veteran. The mission of MBR is to provide a forum to help Veterans heal by teaching them to host their own radio programs. Joel's path into the military is an ageless one. He had his heart broken. Joel was driving a Humvee that was hit by an improvised explosive device. While he has memory issues his DD-214 states it was not the only time. He still suffers from a traumatic brain injury and partial paralysis of his leg. His physical injuries are healing but he feels his TBI is getting worse. The way he describes it is “I'm forty four years old and I feel like I have the brain of a sixteen year old.” After being medically retired, he was briefly confined to a wheelchair. His parent lived with him for over a year to help with his rehabilitation. They encouraged Joel to attend a TBI camp in Breckenridge, Colorado where he was introduced to skiing. He would go on to compete in the Sochi 2014 Paralympic games. Joel met station owner Jim Butler in 2015 and shared his vision for Military Broadcast Radio. Butler loved the idea and when he retired transferred the reins to Joel.  Joel sees his role as a teacher and mentor for his Veteran broadcasters, most of who broadcast from home studios. MBR also helps them get their programming on stations.  Joel emphasizes that one of the keys to addressing PTSD is staying busy and he likes to think they are helping in that vein. One of his female DJ's hosts a show called “Yes I AM a Veteran”. We discuss the challenges that “battle sisters” still face in context of the recent Female Veterans Day June 12th. Any Veterans who would like to get involved can contact Joel at Manager@mbradio.us TAKEAWAY:  “It's my dream to have a studio available to Veterans in every town so they can have their voices heard. “

In the 57th episode of the IndieRE Broadcast by Radio Student from Zagreb we are presenting you a unique musical journey captured on album Altur Mur by Mimika Orchestra. It's member and composer Mak Murtić shared with us few thoughts about his reinvented vision of Mediterranean folklore and we will here tunes called Thalassa and Amuar, inviting us to Mimika's infinite feast. The following song remains inspired by traditional Croatian melodies, but in a completely different way. Đutko and Plodovi Zemlje is a Croatian Agro-Pop sensation and Plodovi zemlje (the literal translation - The Fruits of the Earth) is a refrence to the agricultural TV show on Croatian national television. The song is called Lika, to je ta spika! and it is a single from Đutko's latest album Šišaj Majstore which was released less than a month ago. The last album we have selected for you today comes from a relatively new band on the Croatian scene - Čuvarkuća. They released a debut album Curino cvijeće in the end of 2022 and today we will hear the songs called Uvijek umoran, Gladiole and Dosadan i glup. If this podcast and my teenage diary have taught me anything, it's that looking back on who you were 30 years ago, is VERY enlightening, it's also shocking as all get out. Each week of entries leaves me a wee bit shook by my own decisions, choices, thoughts, theories and all the other inane this and that I've chosen to record within my diary. In this week's episode I've invited my bestie Jenny back (she's a 'uge Madonna fan, hence why I just call her Majenna) to help me work though some fucked up entries. Inside there’s more attempts at diarised humour, I also get nervous broadcasting into two new towns for 2 hours, I wake up to an actual zoo in the bathroom while I’m house sitting at Jan's. I wish I could remember how I removed both the small creatures I stumbled upon, the memory is foggy slash utterly gone, but I can't see myself killing them either. I have to just trust that I got someone in to help me remove them because I was not interested in undertaking that in any way, shape or form, hence why I'm sure I didn't off them like some low key serial killer in the making. I also hilariously dispense love and relationship advice, even though I haven’t had any experience of either, thankfully Majenna thinks it ain't all bad, phew. PLUS I pretend I’m tough by slagging off the cops, I know right, it's just one "brave" story after another, anyway get ready we is about to hit peak teenager AGAIN.

My bestie MJ, aka Mary the babysitter from my teenage diary, is back for another week of entries and to help me understand why the two of us where so HOT for John Laws in the 80's. In 1989 Lawsie was the actual 'King of Talkback Radio', his show was relayed to radio stations all over Australia, including Karratha's 6KA. This week's worth of diary entries includes a rather horrendous set of sentences where 20 year old me is practically whacking myself off, via the tip of my biro (not a euphemism) over John Laws. It's uncomfortable to read now because he's just so hideous and reviled, but back then he was considered the peak of radio talent in Australia...how times change huh. We'll also cover off how a regular caller to the radio station called me up with a "great idea", but it actually isn’t, and the fact that he wants me to help him make it happen, means I'm either gonna have to commit to it, or pull on my big boy pants and tell him it aint ever gonna happen. So that's obviously where the bitching begins in this weeks worth of dairy entries, there's also a creepy moment where I pretend I’m heterosexual and filled with fake lust for one of my guests. I also get agitated when I'm accused of not doing something and actually raise my voice and yell at my boss Neville...whilst also trying not to cry, so that's totes business slash adulting right there. Plus, despite being a dog person, I buy a kitten on a whim, which weirdly makes me a teenage cat lady, because in 1989 I already had a cat back in Adelaide. How long will 80's me stay interested, and can it live with me for more than a week? Probably not, you can find out what I called my new feline friend, and what happened next within this episode, plus in keeping with her earlier appearances on this podcast, MJ manages to further incriminate herself by casually dropping a story that again places her in an illegal scenario, so huzzah for that and job well done.

Hal is also a great storyteller as you'll hear in his conversation with Glen Gordon.   Rob Santello created the Hampod to make ham radio equipment more accessible. What he thought would be a one-off device has turned out to become a project that's helped numerous visually impaired ham operators around the world.  He talks about how video magnifiers have allowed him to continue creating these devices long past the time he thought his declining vision would allow.   Plus, information about who will be hosting FSCast in December, status of SMA shipments in the US, and plans for December product updates.

Do you really need a radio building at all?

I still remember my first look round a radio station. In spite of writing to Signal Radio in Stoke-on-Trent and being ignored (shame on you, Signal), Radio Aire in Leeds held an open day, and I got to look round the studios. I remember being amazed by the equipment, and was astonished at how great the jingles sounded on the decent studio monitors; and the equipment everywhere.   Do you need an on-site playout system? The BBC’s ViLOR solution for their local radio stations keeps the fancy studios, but moves all the playout equipment into a few regional centres - so, as a presenter on a local station, you’re not pressing “play” on a computer in the basement any more, but one a few hundred miles away. The benefits here are obvious - easier maintenance, more efficient air-conditioning, cheaper studio facilities.   Speaking at Next Radio, RCS’s Philippe Generali unveiled a cloud-based system (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SZc7SJWKZ8) called Raptor, that moves all of the playout software for a typical radio station into “the cloud”: so RCS look after the racks and the transmitter link, rather than your radio station.   Do you need a music library? OmniPlayer’s playout system (https://omniplayer.com/) uses Spotify (as well as your local audio) so you’ll have access to any song that you need, almost.   Do you need expensive soundproofed studios? A few years ago, I wrote about Vista Radio, a company that I’ve been proudly working with for the last two years, who don’t have radio studios (https://www.radioinfo.com.au/news/radio-stations-without-radio-studios) in their new facilities. Instead, their “open-air” studios are part of their office space. If you’re doing music programming, it’s unlikely you need the type of heavy soundproofing that legacy studios have; and if the only speech blocks are at breakfast, your office is quiet then anyway.   Do you need studios at all? For UK-based EDM station This Is Electric, their presenters are at home (https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/this-is-electric-broadcasts-from-the-cloud) , using their own home studio (typically, a USB microphone into a laptop), controlling the playout software which is hosted for them by the UK company Broadcast Radio. The station is on DAB and on the internet.   Do you need offices at all? Google’s G-Suite or Microsoft’s Office 365 offers all the functionality for office work, alongside planning systems like WideOrbit or Aquira. For most jobs, there’s little need for anything other than a web browser.   The team at Aiir, (https://www.aiir.com/) who do radio websites, apps and many more things, don’t have a head office at all: and all work remotely from home. There’s no reason to spend all that money on rent and office space if your team are all remote workers.   I’m now hearing about FM stations in the UK who operate entirely virtually - no offices at all, presenters doing their shows from home (both live and voicetracked), and all back-office work being done by home-workers on systems based in the cloud. Many sales operations already work this way.   The discussion in the US earlier this year was all about “the local studio rule”, but, it seems the discussion for some forward-looking radio stations is whether they need a building at all. 2018 is looking to be a good year for small business. My personal definition of “a small business” is an owner-operator doing between $1M and $75M a year. I do not pretend to know the trends outside this group. The following are the small business trends that seem to be emerging in 2018: 1: Small businesses are falling out of love with social media and with SEO (Search Engine Optimization.) 2: Broadcast Radio and Broadcast Television are regaining their previous stature within ad budgets due to the excellent values available at this time. 3: Business owners are beginning to learn the power of having a memorable personality. (The typical company spokesperson is “polished and professional.” Which is just another way of saying “bland, vanilla-neutral. Unremarkable. Interchangeable. Easy to ignore.” Criticism is the price of personality. Which is why so few company spokespersons have any.) Brad and Sarah Casebier used the power of personality to grow their tiny little company in Austin, Texas to astonishing levels of success. You can hear the ad they currently have on the radio on the first page of today's http://www.mondaymorningmemo.com/rabbithole/ (rabbit hole.)4: Experiments with ads in online radio (Pandora, etc.) have typically been disappointments and word is spreading quickly. 5: Google is actively blocking all attempts by SEO specialists to “game” a client's ranking on Google. 6: The most savvy online marketing people are openly advocating mass media as the most efficient way to drive “direct navigation” to a website. (Direct Navigation is currently the single, most important criteria used by Google to determine the search engine ranking of your website. Number two is Time on Site. Number three is Pages Per Session. That being said, there are at least 14 other, smaller criteria considered by Google, but with each one having a decreasing degree of importance.) 7: Sensing the dying momentum for their services, SEO consultants are beginning to push harder than ever in their search for new clients. 8: Recognizing the importance of aligning all their channels of customer communication, business owners are becoming adamant that their online marketing contain the words and phrases [brandable chunks] that have been popularized through their mass media ads. 9: Extremely savvy business owners are taking this concept of “channel alignment” to its ultimate end: ongoing agreement, alignment and reinforcement of mass media messaging throughout all their: A. online efforts, B. direct mail, including invoicing C. email, D. outbound calls, E. conversations of Customer Service Representatives with inbound callers F. weekly orientation and training of salespeople G. weekly orientation and training of all other employees who might interact with the public on behalf of the company. Let me say this as plainly as I can. The smartest and most successful small business owners are orchestrating and aligning all these previously “siloed” departments into a single, concerted voice. And it's about time. Roy H. Williams
