Dublin-born, London-based artist Niall Jackson aka Swimmers Jackson releases his second album Now Is All via his own Wonky Karousel Records label this Friday, April 7. Made between March 2020 and March 2022, it's a journey of sorts through the pandemic. He released his debut album Murmuration in May 2020, but with no opportunity to tour, Jackson took to writing as many songs as possible to document the feelings of that time before heading back into a studio in Limerick over Christmas 2021 and St Patrick's Day 2022. Armed with a handful of songs about loss of identity, an uncertain future, concerns with society's direction, and getting older against your will, the resulting album Now Is All is both hard fought and hard won. We talk about life in London, his creative process, getting radio play from Steve Lamacq, and go through some of the tracks on the album. The song reflects on the pressures of living up to standards pressed upon us by those lacking in the very same standards. When this comes from individuals closest to us, the feeling breeds suffocation. But there is a revelation of the truth if we only dare to ask the hypocrite to take a good look in the mirror. Onyi Moss is a British/Nigerian singer-songwriter from Manchester, UK. By day, she's a creative who focuses on strong visual content which has seen her gain over 160,000 followers on Instagram and won her various awards (like the 2019 Cosmopolitan Fashion Blogger of the Year). In the UK and Ireland a new music phenomenon is growing - bands that are speaking over their songs instead of singing. Is a new guitar music movement being born? Fontaines D.C., Dry Cleaning and Yard Act, as well as solo artists including Billy Nomates and Sinead O'Brien are just some of the acts using speech prominently in their music. It is not just vocal performance that has been commented on - many emerging bands have been described as having a ‘post-punk' guitar music style and lyrics rich in social commentary. Musician and broadcaster Gemma Bradley meets bands and vocalists to find out more about this exciting music trend and why. James Smith, songwriter and vocalist of English band Yard Act explains why he was attracted to what he describes as ‘spoken word, politically forward' guitar music. He reflects on the power of vocal performance and how the Covid pandemic affected his song writing. Irish vocalist Sinead O'Brien performs on stage with a guitarist and drummer and works in poetry as well as music. She meets Gemma backstage before a gig to discuss how versatile and impactful speech in music can be. Fionn Reilly from Belfast band Enola Gay explains to Gemma what inspires his energetic performance style, vocal delivery and the band's song lyrics. Gemma also visits the prolific and much sought-after producer Dan Carey at his London studio. He has worked with many guitar bands that use speech in their music including Fontaines D.C., Squid, Wet Leg and black midi, and describes the freedom available for artists unconstrained by the parameters of singing. Test Card Girl is the solo project that singer/songwriter Catherine Burgis has been working on since 2019. Based in Manchester, UK, Catherine decided to explore the depths of her creative mind after finding herself bored of living from administrative work. She began writing songs and doing stand-up comedy, which led to the release of her first single in September 2020. Her debut quickly gathered the attention of John Kennedy on Radio X and Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music (presented in the “Ones to Watch 2021” show). Receiving an Arts Council England Grant allowed her to work on her debut EP. Influenced by artists such as Marika Hackman, Bon Iver and Tracy Chapman, Test Card Girl presents her second single, “If You're Feeling Down”. After enjoying the electronic, synthwave elements present in her debut track, we are now delighted by this folk song, in which Catherine's charming voice and acoustic guitar invite the listener to a state of profound calm and warmth. A track that feels like sunshine, with delicate vocals and sweet melodies that will leave you smiling, feeling uplifted… such a beautiful experience.

Peggs and Seán have been busy beavering away in their South London studio, brewing up this enchanting elixir of an EP. Now with the single released and feeling radio love from the likes of Gemma Bradley, Lauren Laverne and Steve Lamacq, Seán and Peggs open up about the making of the EP. Originally it was going to be called Afterglow and released in Summer 2021 but they decided to wait and refocus and now we have the brilliant result. Chris Parry was, once, the drummer of New Zealand band The Fourmyula who went on to work for Polydor in the UK - going on to sign The Jam in February 1977. Chris first saw the band on 22nd January 1977, where they supported Bearded Lady at The Marquee in London (after Shane MacGowan had told him to check them out!). The band were signed for a £6,000 advance and 6% royalty rate which initially covered only the group's first single, but Polydor quickly exercised an option to extend the contract to four years and four albums. Chris has co-producer credits with Vic Smith on the first 2 albums along with the singles that came outside those album cycles - All around the World in 1977 and News of the World in 1978. For All Mod Cons - the 3rd Album - Chris had Associate Producer credits on To Be Someone (Didn't We Have A Nice Time), David Watts, It's Too Bad and 'A' Bomb in Wardour Street. In 1978, he left The Jam set up to create and run his own record label - Fiction Records - and signed The Cure (after hearing a demos of ‘10.15 on Saturday Night' and ‘Boys Don't Cry'). He managed The Cure until 1988 and Fiction released their music until 2001, when he sold the label to Universal Records. Another couple of nice Weller related connections - in 1984, Chris produced an album by Tim Pope - Director of multiple music videos for The Style Council and was also MD of Radio Station - XFM from 1992-1998 with an amazing line up including Steve Lamacq, Mary Anne Hobbs, Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant, Zane Lowe and Gary Crowley Session (Paul did a session on that show in 1997). A very special episode for the Memorabilia Podcast - our first indie superstar guest in Caretaker Race singer/songrwriter and Loft guitarist Andy Strickland. Andy kindly took the time to speak to us for over 90 minutes about his band's superb 1990 debut album 'Hangover Square'. For the first time, we also have music clips to accompany the tales behind the songwriting and producing. Thank you Andy! There's a lot packed in to the lengthy episode and some wonderful stories shared by Andy talking about his time in 'The Loft', the break-up they went through, subsequently hitting number 3 in the Netflix music chart above Glen Campbell, forming The Caretaker Race, getting signed to legendary producer Stephen Street's Foundation record label, and everything you could possibly need to know about the LP Hangover Square. There's mentions for writer and broadcaster Danny Baker, Ian Dickson (the Australian Simon Cowell), Terry Hall, Johnny Marr, Lloyd Cole, Cherry Red Records, producer John Parish, journalist Jerry Smith, 6Music radio presenter Steve Lamacq, The Sundays, and why he realised he wasn't cut out for the world of business and being the owner of a record label. We can't thank Andy enough for giving up his time and for his patience during the recording. The Leeds to the Isle of Wight connection was a little unreliable and we encountered a number of technical hitches forcing us to swtich recording platforms after just a few minutes of getting going, so apologies for the imperfections in the opening minutes of the interview. Andy stayed with us to review the top 10 UK singles at the time of release for Hangover Square and finished with a brilliant story about a night out in Paris with the singer whose single from the movie 'Days of Thunder' was at the very top of the hit parade in September 1990. Andy left us with a 'hot-tip' for a new band to listen and watch out for - the Isle of Wight's very own 'Wet Leg'. In fact, the tip was that hot that the tickets we were going to buy to see them in Leeds in April 2022 have already sold out! The trio cover in one jam-packed hour the importance of queer representation in mainstream music, the difficulties faced by musicians in balancing a public persona with the tough reality of trying to earn a living from music alone, and how listening to Jack Johnson can cause massive sexual awakenings if you're not careful.  Pillow Queens are a four piece based in Dublin, Ireland. Formed in 2016, their State of the State EP caught the ear of Steve Lamacq who called the band's songs “deceptively infectious, with sharp hooks and sharp nails”. That EP's lead single, Favourite, with its accompanying dog-filled video, received airplay on BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing, Radio X, and Amazing Radio as well as across Irish national radio stations. Two UK tours followed, along with a brace of sellout hometown shows in Dublin. January 2021 saw the four piece take on their US television debut, performing and interviewing on the CBS late night talk show The Late Late Show with James Corden. “The venues are more of a pay off than the awards, they’re the benchmark for us” Bondy, Catfish and the BottlemenAli and Dan discuss Catfish and the Bottlemen and their ascent from small, independent venues to bona fide festival headliners since their debut album, The Balcony, was released in 2014. As well as making their cases for their favourite Catfish anthems to be included in the final seven song setlist, they also compare the songwriting talents of Van McCann and Arctic Monkey's Alex Turner, the Reading/Leeds announcement that there will be two headliners per night, snobbery in the music press, the UK arenas most likely to score low on the gameshow Pointless, whether Scottish music fans are the best in the world, Jimmy Nail and Kempy's favourite soft beverage, Robinson's Blackcurrant corida.THIS WEEK'S HEADLINERS An adolescent Van McCann, frontman of Catfish and the Bottlemen, began submitting his tracks to the BBC Introducing Uploader a decade ago. He did so with intent, quoted as saying “we believe that once our music is heard, the people will love it”. He was relentlessly committed to the world hearing their music; throwing demos onstage at gigs and stuffing them under car windscreen wipers to get the word around the country. The journey started to pick up pace after their 2013 appearance on the BBC Introducing stage at Reading and Leeds’ festivals. A year later, their debut album, the Balcony, was released. Filled with perfect three-minute indie-rock anthems that resonated not just in their hometown of Llandudno, but nationwide. BBC Radio 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq described them as his favourite band of the year and, judging from their ascension up the line-up posters of festivals across the country, he wasn’t the only one who fell in love with the 11 songs on The Balcony, all of them – according to Van in an interview with Lammo - about girls and getting out a small town. The songs on their debut were made to be played live – or rather screamed back at the band from their legions of devoted fans - and follow-up The Ride, released in 2016, and last year’s effort, The Balance, have capitalised on Van’s instinct for a great hook and huge singalong choruses that match the bands’ stadium sized ambition. Experiencing Catfish live – even watching footage of their gigs and the reaction of their fans – prove that they are worthy festival headliners and next year, alongside Stormzy, come full circle as they top the bill at Reading and Leeds festival. Seven Song Setlist

WA-CHING....that's the sound of Ali and Dan Seven returning for Season Two of the Seven Song Setlist podcast. Although the doors to live music venues across the country are still locked shut and bands remain unable to tour, gig goers Ali and Dan try their best to replicate the excitement of going to see your favourite artists. From the merch table to the bar, the support band to the headline act, the Seven Song Setlist podcast hopes to support the artists that we love through an exercise in 'gig economy (no, not that kind...), as we argue our case for our most loved songs and try to agree on the songs we would want these bands to play if they could only perform a seven song setlist! And, after scoring their first number one album with Ultra Mono earlier this month, and on the eve of the world premiere of the film Don't Go Gentle, at London's BFI Southbank, who better to kick off the new season with than the ferocious prophets of positivity....the mighty IDLES!Formed in Bristol in 2009 by sixth form friends Joe Talbot and Adam ‘Dev’ Devonshire. Guitarist Mark Bowen, a former dentist who is better known nowadays for ripping off his clothes and parading around on stage in his CK’s rather than ripping out teeth, joined the band after moving from Belfast to Bristol, and by 2014, John Beavis and Lee Kiernan completed the line up that have achieved so much success since they literally roared onto the scene with their 2017 debut album, Brutalism. Championed in the early days by the legend that is Steve Lamacq – the unofficial sixth member of Idles – and the station on which he DJ’s, BBC6Music, IDLES. Their second album, the Mercury music prize nominated Joy As An Act Of Resistance extended a warm embrace to lots of people around the world who needed a band like Idles in their lives to make sense of the chaos. Proof of this can be found in the AF Gang, an online community of over 31 thousands Idles founded by Lindsay Melbourne fans that has become a vital part of of their lives and is now almost as well known as the band themselves. A carnival like atmosphere at their appearance on the Park Stage was one of the highlights of the 2019 edition of the Glastonbury festival, and they capped off last year with their biggest headline show to date, at London’s iconic Alexandra Palace. Had this year not robbed us all of live music, there is not doubt that the tracks from IDLES latest offering, Ultra Mono, would have filled arenas around the country and propelled them ever closer to the top of festival bills around the world. We also chat about the 80's Australian indie heroes, the Go-Betweens, the recent announcement that Arctic Monkeys are releasing a live album with proceeds going to War Child, where IDLES go next and if they'll follow Turner and co. and end up as the moon's next resident band...EPISODE LINKSAF GANG(from the merch table) Arctic Monkeys live at the Royal Albert Hall for War Child Don't Go Gentle: A Film About IDLES(this ep's support act) The Go-Betweens 'Streets of Your Town' IDLES npr music Tiny Desk Concert (one of our favourite things on the internet) - IDLES perform 'Never Fight A Man With A Perm' on the Park Stage, Glastonbury 2019 IDLES official website; store full of incredible merchandise and music - KEXP Performance and interview with Mark Bowen

Welcome back to Sound Affects podcast, after a long hiatus during which time we've been in a 6-month lockdown/post-lockdown pandemic. For this episode, I speak to Steve Lamacq, aka Lammo – BBC radio DJ for BBC 6 Music, former NME journalist and co-host of BBC Radio 1 Evening Session with Jo Whiley, founder of Deceptive Records (Elastica, Placebo, Idelwild), and author of Going Deaf for a Living. He famously interviewed Richey Edwards of Manic Street Preachers in the early 90s, resulting in one of the most iconic and sobering NME images of all time. I wanted to speak to Steve in more depth about this experience and other complex encounters that he documents in his book. As ever, please leave comments below, reviews on iTunes/Apple Pod, or follow Sound Affects on Twitter/Facebook @SoundAffectsPod and Instagram @sound_affects_podcast. In this sixteenth episode of the season of the Her Spirit podcast BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin and BBC Triathlon presenter Annie Emmerson talk to Jo Whiley, Radio DJ and TV presenter.Arguably one of the most recognisable voices in British Broadcasting, Jo Whiley has had an exciting and varied career and is considered one of the nation’s favourite radio DJs. Jo was born in Northampton. After studying in Brighton and dabbling on BBC Radio Sussex’s new music show, her first broadcasting job was as a presenter for WPFM, Radio 4’s youth culture and music show. She then moved over into TV, initially on satellite, then to Channel 4 as band booker for ‘The Word’, giving Britain its first television taste of bands such as Nirvana and Rage Against The Machine.Jo joined Radio 1 in the Spring of 1993 and in September she became permanent co-presenter of The Evening Session with Steve Lamacq. Four years later she landed her own daytime show, and remained part of Radio 1’s weekday line-up until 2009, when she began a new weekend programme. Jo currently presents her evening show Monday - Thursday on Radio 2.Jo has also presented coverage of the Glastonbury Festival on Radio 1, Channel 4 and BBC-TV, plus she’s hosted several music programmes for Channel 4. Jo is a celebrity ambassador to Mencap, a UK charity that works to support people with learning difficulties. She hosts the Little Noise Sessions concerts, in aid of the Mencap charity enlisting the support of many well-known international music artists. Jo is also a supporter of Tommy’s - The Baby Charity and the Patron of the Cri du Chat Syndrome Support Group.Jo talks about how she got into triathlon after a call from Louise in 2019 and has gone on to complete her extremely demanding triathlon challenge for Sport Relief in 2020, in which she did three triathlons in three days in three different cities and raising money for Sport Relief. She talks about her love of swimming, menopause and life in lockdown with her husband Steve and 4 children. These podcasts have been made possible through the support of Medichecks www.medichecks.com and Sport England www.sportengland.org. New Dawn Records were formed in 1996, facilitating some initial low key releases mainly as a way to help some local friends have their music heard.   The main activity began from 2000 when they signed the hip hop crew Belles in Monica, spearheaded by producer Kruze, and helped in their development and recording leading to the group's only album release “Resistance is Futile” in 2002.  The affiliated singles “Y'All Under Surveillance”, “Meltdown” and “What D'Ya Need” were released on vinyl that year and received international radio airplay including key supporters such as Steve Lamacq on BBC Radio 1's flagship Evening Sessions show.   The singles were particularly well supported in the clubs at the time which led to high entries on DJ Magazine's specialist charts while the group also featured in international publications including Hip Hop Connection, Billboard, Blues & soul, XLR8R and Hip Hop DX.   Some of their music was also used for a number of Xtreme Sports programmes and small independent film.   The group's final single release was “Smoke Filled Rooms” in 2003   During this period, the label looked to expand their operation and bring additional dynamics to their overall organization.  With a group of fcolleagues, the concept of “Urban Elite” was conceived, originally to build a community of those active in different artforms such as film, photography, music, street art, the aim being to cross collaborate on various projects.   Over time, Urban Elite's activity centred on film / documentary production, music production and music promotions.

When he was just 27 years old, on February 1, 1995 he mysteriously disspaered and has never been seen again. He was good friends with Manic's bassist, Nicky Wire and initially served as the band's driver and roadie. Soon he began helping out in writing the band's lyrics and eventually began playing rhythm guitar. For the band's album "Holy Bible," it's said Edwards himself wrote the majority of the lyrics on it. Even though he wasn't the most talented of musicians, he had a major contribution in the direction of the band's sound. He gained notoriety on May 15, 1991, when he argued with NME journalist, Steve Lamacq, about the band's values and authenticity. Apparently, Steve questioned Edwards on whether or not he was really serious about his art. Edwards responded by pulling out a razor and carving the words "4 REAL" into his forearm. #2 Menger Hotel Before the Menger Hotel was even erected, the site where it would stand was already filled with a rich history. It was in the same area where the famous Battle of the Alamo came to pass in San Antonio Texas. In the 1840s, a 21-year old German immigrant named William A. Menger started to make a name for himself in the area. In a short amount of time, he acquired various breweries and officially gaining the nickname of "Beer King." He went on to marry boarding house proprietress, Mary Guenther and together they transformed the boarding house into the Menger Hotel. By 1859, the Hotel opened for business. It was a beautiful two-story building that was elegant and classy both inside and out. Merger even built an underground tunnel from the hotel that lead straight to his brewery so he could provide an easy access tour to his guests. The Hotel was such a success that just three months of its initial opening, the couple decided to expand it even further and double up the number of rooms from 50 to 100.

If you look at a map of the London Underground Train Network, somewhere between Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road is arguably dead in the center of that map, and that is where I was last night at The 100 Club to see Steve Lamacq. He's on tour talking about his book "Going Deaf For A Living" and his history in the business of music broadcasting in general. The show is fantastic and I highly recommend it. So all of the conversations from today's episode were had within the confines of The 100 Club. And those conversations are: Dan and Sam who were sat behind me, Lawrence who let me borrow his pen, Paige and Tony of the band Voodoo Radio ( -- https://www.twitter.com/voodooradioband -- ), Then there's a little of the show itself, namely the intro and Steve talking about receiving Bloc Party's demo back in the day, Nick Hodgson, formerly of Kaiser Chiefs, And then, after hearing a little from some of his fans, I talk to Steve Lamacq himself. Thank you to everyone who talked to me for today's episode. There has been no shortage of amazing guests on The StageLeft Podcast, and this episode is no exception. Goldheart Assembly's James Dale and John Herbert join us to talk about their journey, their songs, and reflections after playing their final and farewell gig in London last month. A gig that saw performances from members of The Bluetones, Starsailor, EMF, and The Magic Numbers. Today they talk about their reasons for splitting, composition techniques, their new projects, and their big break by being the first ever unsigned band on Steve Lamacq's Live Session – sandwiched between Green Day and Elbow – complete with full orchestra. From their meeting at university in rival bands, to playing together at London's Rock Garden, we also hear the final ever performances of King of Rome, Anvil, Harvest in the Snow, Engraver's Daughter, So long St. Christopher, and Into Desperate Arms. Also included: The pivotal moment of meeting Morcheeba's Andy Nunn; ‘…”I'd join your band, if this was a band,”…and he did in the end…' The uniqueness of their sound, songwriting and harmony; ‘…Just tonally, our voices went so well together, it gave us a huge head start...' The reception of their second album, three years in the making; ‘…We had Atlantic Records, Columbia Records, all put offers in for us. We thought that because they loved the early music so much - that if we made better music, wrote a better album, and weren't attached to another record label, then we would sign to Atlantic Records…' The hilarious anecdote about using a 200-ton steam engine for the click track to Jesus Wheel; ‘…I placed about nine mics and two of them got wet, got ruined by the steam. I didn't know what I was doing so I just placed them everywhere…' This entertaining, and honest interview, gives great insight into not only the band, but the inner workings and politics of the music industry, radio stations, and how not to place your microphones beside a 200-ton steam engine…

Roger Bolton explores listener reaction to BBC radio. The death of boxing legend Muhammad Ali blazed across BBC output in the last week - but did this coverage fail to portray the two sides of his character? Listeners questioned whether the reporting focused too heavily on his success and iconic image and neglected his more controversial moments. Controller of daily news programmes Gavin Allen explains how these decisions are made in the editorial process and what he feels the news programmes achieved. In the age of audiences having streaming websites and personal playlists at their fingertips, is there a place for music presenters to curate our listening? BBC 6 Music believe there is as it broadcasts its annual 6 Music Recommends Day. Reporter Rob Crossan goes behind the scenes with musicians and presenters to find out how they put together a 12 hour playlist of brand new music that will please a diverse set of listeners. He speaks to presenters Cerys Matthews, Steve Lamacq and Shaun Keaveny, as well as Head of Music Jeff Smith and Head of Programmes Paul Rogers. Roger Bolton also puts listener questions to BBC 6 Music Controller Bob Shennan, asking the station has evolved since its launch in 2002 and where it fits into the range of music radio stations. And in last week's Feedback, the BBC's assistant political editor Norman Smith explained how he feels the corporation's impartiality may affect reporting of the EU Referendum. It's a debate that many Feedback listeners felt compelled to join in. Produced by Kate Dixon. A Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4.
