The second sermon in our series in Hebrews - 'Jesus is Greater' Sermon: ' Jesus is the Greater Man' Series: 'Jesus is Greater' Readings: Philippians 2:5-11 & Hebrews 2:5-18 Preacher: Adam Hess Recorded 15th October, 2023 S13E2
We are spending this week with well-known passages from Paul's letters – his instruction to the church.Yesterday, we read from the first part of Philippians Chapter 2 – a challenge to stop ‘grasping' – but imitate Christs humility, servant-heart in the way we relate to one another.Today, we carry on in chapter 3 – Ask the question – Are you a moaner? The older I get, the more I seem to moan and whinge! It became more apparent recently when I was giving my son a lift to his piano lessons. I was in a rush, trying to cut across busy Thanet roads, lots of post-school traffic – and I guess, lots of quite poor driving. But I suddenly realised that, in a journey of less than 15 minutes I had probably moaned about 7 or 8 drivers. They were driving to slow, or to fast. They had cut corners, forgotten to indicate, not let me through……Now of course, the reality is that I too at times drive too slow, too fast, I can sometimes cut corners, forget to indicate, push through in a hurry….I hope that hasn't shocked you! It becomes so easy to moan and whinge our way through life. Particularly about the things that really don't matter. What kind of example was I being to my son!
We are dipping into a few familiar passages from Paul this week – Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians and Colossians. Paul's teaching is practical and challenging – he his desperate for these churches to grasp what living lives for Jesus looked like. So far this week we have thought about the battle raging within our lives – the challenge for us to show the whole fruit that Jesus showed in his life.Yesterday, in a culture that struggles with identity – our primary identity is in Christ – this identy can form the bedrock in which all other of our other identities can be built – this identity will last when other identities have ceased.Today, we are going to head into the first of two days in the great chapter of Philippians 2 –

Renew If we believe the resurrection to be true what difference does that make for us? Philippians 3:10-11I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.Romans 8:11And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.
God of EqualityPhilippians 2:5-115 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:6 who, being in very nature[a] God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature[b] of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross!9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
“Jesus said, “I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the very stones would shout out.” And then in my sanctified imagination, I believe Jesus turned to the crowd and sang, two thousand years before it hit the charts. ‘Shout, shout, let it all out These are the things I can do without Come on, I'm talking to you, come on' We wave palms today not because they make dandy decorations but because we are re-enacting a moment where the people decided they were tired of being told what they could and could not say in church. Because the people looked around at a world turned upside down and decided it was long past time to shout out all those things that we can do without. All those things that imprison instead of liberate. All those things that wound instead of heal. All those things that hate instead of love. All those things that convince us that there are pieces of ourselves that God does not want to see instead of singing and dancing with joy at a God who goes to bed at night dreaming about us and giggling to herself with joy about how much she loves us.” Sermon by Mike Kinman from worship at 11:30 a.m. on Palm Sunday, April 10, 2022 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Living Beyond Our Fears | Rev. David Pileggi 13 March 2022 - Second Sunday in Lent - Psalm 27 and our Gospel passage today are tied together by the theme of fear. In this psalm, we discover that biblical worship – where we behold God's beauty, express joy, and offer sacrifice – is the best place to lose our fears and anxieties. The trust and obedience of Jesus, as He refuses to let anything stop him from doing God's will and walking the way of the cross, also enables us to live beyond our fears by faithful obedience to him, the one who conquered death itself. Sunday 17 March: “Love, unrequited and relentless” Readings: Philippians 3:14 - 4:1 & Luke 13:31-35 (NIV) Our service was led by Rev Peter Gardner, Minister to the Visual Arts Communities of Glasgow. The love of God is powerful. We know that. But do we also really appreciate that God's love is relentless? “You cannot wash off God's love for you,” as the phrase goes. Yet despite this assurance, we live in a world marked by fear. The recent massacre in the New Zealand mosque, the uncertainties around Brexit, and so many other things keep us worried and concerned. We feel *vulnerable* as a result. The readings today speak to our human feelings of vulnerability. In the first Reading, we see that Jesus mentions Herod. Jesus is told that Herod wants to kill Jesus. This kind of threat is a classic resort of totalitarian governments throughout the ages. Making people live in fear is a way of forcing your will on society. Further, fear nurtures fear. Jesus was no stranger to such attempts by the authorities of the day to try to intimidate people via fear. Years before, he was born in a stables because of a similar attempt by the authorities to get their way through fear! Yet despite this threat, Jesus still pours out His love. His concern is to continue His ministry to His people. In essence, He is saying that He will not stop His loving just because of the shameful threats of a despot who fears losing his power. Jesus, by contrast, has no fear. Instead, Jesus's longing shines like a light into all our fears. He calls us to be open-hearted, like Him. The question is, namely, how we navigate the concerns of the world while embracing God's love. How do we live in a world marked by fear? What does it mean to be a Christian in such a world? The answer lies in living God's love, in living in His light. Jesus's strong love made Him vulnerable, but it ultimately overcame all on the third day, because it even overcame death! Let us rejoice in that! Amen Thanks for an interesting sermon, Peter Gardner.
