Jesus cried out from the cross, “It is finished.” But what exactly did he finish? Join us for the message “It Is Finished.” This is a recording of the scripture and sermon portion of our service on 4/13/25. On Palm Sunday, as we turn toward the cross, Jesus joins us in the deep suffering of the world, with tender mercy there, too.
This sermon, by Rev. Joyce Shin, was offered on Palm/Passion Sunday, April 13, 2025. The scripture passages for this day were Isaiah 50:4-9a and Luke 22:14-23:56 (excerpts). To view the full Lord's Day service, visit our YouTube channel by searching "Swarthmore Presbyterian Church."
This sermon delivered on Palm Passion Sunday explores the juxtaposition between the joyous celebration of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem and the somber events of his passion. The speaker reflects on the significance of the scriptures read during this time, focusing on the themes of vulnerability, love, and the cost of following Jesus. They encourage the congregation to engage with the full story of Jesus' journey, from the excitement of the parade to the tragic events leading to the crucifixion, emphasizing that true love often involves risk and suffering.
PALM / PASSION SUNDAY everything in between shouting & silence Luke 19:29-40 (Jesus enters Jerusalem) Jesus doesn't instigate his own parade. Instead, just his quiet presence alone inspires the multitude to shout out and praise God. When the religious leaders try to silence the crowd, Jesus tells them that the noise level isn't the point—even the stones would cry out if they were silent. It takes wisdom to know when our voice is needed and when it's just noise.

April 13, 2025 Philippians 2:4-8 (ESV) 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Pastor Deborah continues our lenten journey.
Luke orchestrates Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem with every mark of the pomp and circumstance that is appropriate to the story he is telling. The prophets, tradition, and creation itself hail the moment when God proves faithful to promises that will bring redemption. Preaching text: Luke 19:28-40Bible for Worship is a weekly introduction to the scripture passage that is likely to be the basis for the sermon on the following weekend. It correlates with the Revised Common Lectionary as it is used at St. Paul. With Peter A. Pettit, teaching pastor.

Join Rev. Emily E. Ewing (they) and Rev. Kay Rohloff (she) to dive into Jesus (biblical, historical, and pop cultural!) for episode 3 in our Nerds At Church Superhero Spectacular Season! The scripture we refer to for this episode can be found here. Although the story of Jesus comes up in the Lectionary on every day except Pentecost (but also kind of even then), we're linking to episodes that have the readings that we specifically talk about in this episode. John 1:1-17 comes up for the 2nd Sunday of Christmas every year, so we've covered it in our first season and also for the 2nd Sunday of Christmas in our second season and for Christmas Day: Nativity of the Lord III in our third season. Luke 4:16-23 is split between the 3rd Sunday after Epiphany Year C and the 4th Sunday after Epiphany Year C. Mark 15:16-41 is an option for part of the Passion reading for those who do Passion Sunday in Lent or for Palm/Passion Sunday in Year B (though we don't cover it directly in our episode). Matthew 28:1-10 is an option for Easter Sunday in Year A. John 8 is not included in the Revised Common Lectionary. Matthew 5:3-12 is in the gospel reading on the 4th Sunday after Epiphany in Year A and on All Saints Day in Year A. Kay also mentioned the songs “Dropkick Me Jesus” and “The Rebel Jesus” during the episode. CN: we talk about white Jesus' impact, particularly regarding white supremacy and white nationalism during the pop culture Jesus conversation and we mention antisemitism throughout the episode. Today is Palm|Passion Sunday, it is one of the more cluttered and confusing liturgical days of the church year. In celebration of Palm|Passion Sunday, today we remember a parade deliberately staged by Jesus. Join Pastor James as he focuses on the cheers of Hosanna during that parade, shortly followed by the jeers of the crucifixion on Good Friday. The parade and crucifixion both unwittingly show humankind's part in highlighting God's great love for each of us as sinners.
