Does hearing what others are doing or planning, does that make you evaluate or reevaluate your progress, plans, things you are doing? I find myself doing that and then have to remind myself that I am not in a competition with anyone else and to compare myself only to my past self. After returning home from church camp one year, June Joplin realized two of her greatest desires: to be a pastor and to be a woman. Years later, she finally came out to her baptist congregation as trans, which ultimately resulted in being fired from her position. Recounting the events that both led up to her coming out and the consequences she faced after, June shares her journey of self-acceptance and staying true to her identity.02:50: Coming out as trans07:00: The wrong side of the island13:20: The last sermon26:30: HomesicknessBook June mentions: Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More by Janet MockFacebook: (Centered Life Coaching)Instagram: (Nancy Shadlock)Website: www.centered.caJune's Social MediaFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/pastorjunejoplin/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM3t_RAyYYG5M-WLgHaT76gWould you like to donate coming out support for a deserving person? “I believe that telling our stories, first to ourselves and then to one another and the world, is a revolutionary act. It is an act that can be met with hostility, exclusion, and violence. It can also lead to love, understanding, transcendence, and community. I hope that my being real with you will help empower you to step into who you are and encourage you to share yourself with those around you.” ― Janet Mock, Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More Back with another “thotful moment” where we share some insightful personal stories! This episode is especially exciting because it’s a series of topics over non-hetero sex. This Queer Sex Series episode will be over our first times! We are joined with some very special guests! “Straight up out of Kansas City, yeah we made it out there” our love BELLA, our amazing friend Casey and get a little drop in from a crowd favorite our roomie Angel. We introduce the episode with our thots on how we identify with the LGBLT community. Then discuss how and where did we learn to have sex? Cause y’all know our parents didn’t tell us nothing. From that conversation we delve into some pretty good questions like does sex mean penetration and how did we know we were LGBTQ? We also gush over the gay cultural impact of the Showtime tv series, The L Word! We are so happy to be covering these specific topics. As a queer podcast, we think it’s important to normalize these conversations. We are so often shamed for talking about our queer sex lives with heterosexuals because they don’t understand. We hope this conversation made you smile, relate and laugh because it’s important for us to spread helpful knowledge and create a safe space for any LGBTQIA+ individual. When you think of swinging, what’s the first image that comes to your mind? Some key party in the 1970s? Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in masks? A suburban couple revealing their lifestyle on The Oprah Show? I’m going to assume all of those images in your mind have one thing in common. Everybody is white. If you’ve been paying attention you know it’s already dangerous to be driving while Black. Outside a store while Black. Voting while Black. Riding a train while Black. Sitting in your car while Black. Wearing a hoodie while Black. Walking in your neighborhood with a friend while Black. Minding your own damn business inside your own damn apartment while Black. But when it comes being a swinger…do Black people really do that? Yes they do. And for some…it can be, well, interesting. On this episode, I talk to one half of a “rarity” in the swinging community: A Black couple. Pursuing the lifestyle of their choice, both he and his wife have experienced all sorts of interesting comments, rejections and flat out fetishization. My guest discusses what it’s like to be at a sex party with Trump supporters, the crazy expectations or blatant racism they encounter on swinger dating sites and also the historic implications of being a Black man watching your wife have sex with a White man. Everything you think you knew about the lifestyle is about to change. If you'd like to contact my guest Mink and his wife Andy, check out the swinging lifestyle site Kasidie.com and search for MinkandAndy. At the very least, you know it's going to be a funny night. Here's my Medium.com story about the night I dragged my husband to a swinger party for work. It did not go well. It’s important to remember that the racial awareness that's happening right now in this country is not just some trend and we must keep working to educate ourselves and help put an end to systemic racism. White people need to better understand our part in this country’s deeply rooted racist past and the millions of ways we’ve benefited from it without even realizing. There's a lot more work that needs to be done. Please don’t ask or expect Black people to educate you. You have to listen, learn and do the work yourself. Below is a brief list of book to read that will help you better understand centuries of systemic oppression much better. Please do your part to support Black artists, Black-owned business, and try to use your platform to amplify Black voices whenever you can. How to Be an Antiracist/Ibram X. When you think about the current state of trans activism, the name Janet Mock is probably at the top of your mind. But there was a time when Mock was living a relatively low-profile life, working as a journalist outside the spotlight… until a friend recommended her for a profile in Marie Claire magazine. The article’s publication changed the course of her work, and life—lucky for all of us. "I didn't plan the role model part of it or the advocate part of it," she explains. "I think that all just kind of started. I realized after the piece came out that there was such a hunger to hear more about young trans women of color experiences. I think my writing just kind of went there because I think there was a need to hear more about that and I think there was also a need within myself to share more about parts of myself that I'd kept silent for so long." Janet's still a writer, but now she's also an activist - and one of the most recognizable faces in trans advocacy. In many ways, she's become the role model she herself didn't have while growing up. "People often say that I'm a role model," she says. "I feel like I'm a real model. Like, there's a real model of how you can do it. I'm existing. I'm out in the world. I'm still discovering who I am. I'm not playing a role. I'm being real. This is my life." In her book, Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More, she tells her story and shares some of what she's learned along the way. On this week's show, we talk to Janet about her work, her life, and the wisdom she hopes to impart on today's trans girls of color. "The biggest lesson that I've ever learned in my life is to just truly fight for who you are, and not let anyone - not even your own body - tell you that you can't do something that you know you're supposed to be doing." When we asked Janet who some of her own role models are, she name checked TransGriot blogger Monica Roberts. Monica is a long-time friend and auntie to the show, so we thought we’d close this episode with some words of wisdom from her, recorded when she was in town last summer.
Writer and activist Janet Mock was living a successful life, working as a journalist, outside the spotlight, until a friend recommended her for a profile in Marie Claire magazine. The article's publication had consequences that changed the course of her work, and life. This is my life." In her upcoming book, Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More, she tells her story and shares some of what she's learned along the way. Janet will be the keynote speaker for Pride Week at UofL, and we're thrilled she took some time to speak with us this week and share some of her wisdom. "The biggest lesson that I've ever learned in my life is to just truly fight for who you are, and not let anyone - not even your own body - tell you that you can't do something that you know you're supposed to be doing."
