One of the greatest shows on Earth has been going on now for several months in Hawaii, where the Kīlauea volcano at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park has been erupting since late December. The Kīlauea volcano is the most active volcano on Earth. It's also a relatively safe volcano in that it spends most of its time simmering and bubbling without any spectacularly explosive eruptions. But lately it has been putting on some incredible shows of lava fountains, with one glowing string of magma soaring about 1,000 feet in the air, a truly spectacular sight to see. To understand what's going on with Kīlauea and what danger it poses, we're joined today by Matt Patrick, a research geologist with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
Welcome back to National Park Nightmares, the podcast that explores real-life disappearances, survival stories, and unexplained events from deep within America's most iconic wilderness areas. In Volume 4, we dive into some of the most chilling—and unforgettable—cases yet. We begin with a rare story of survival. Christy Perry, a seasoned hiker, vanished in Big Bend National Park in Texas in November 2023. For eight days, she endured freezing temperatures, rain, and isolation with no food and only rainwater to drink. Most feared the worst. Then, against all odds, she was found alive. Her story is a reminder that sometimes, hope really does make the difference. But not every story has a happy ending.Next, we explore the mysterious disappearance of Eric Robinson, a veteran adventurer who set out to solo-hike Utah's High Uintas in 2011—and never made it back. Years passed with no trace until, in 2016, a group of hikers stumbled on his remains in one of the most rugged areas of the park. What happened in those final days remains unclear, but the discovery offered long-awaited answers. Then there's Morgan Heimer—a young river guide who vanished in broad daylight in the Grand Canyon in 2015. One moment he was assisting guests at the water's edge… the next, he was gone. No struggle. No sound. No trace.Despite an extensive search, his case remains one of the canyon's most baffling mysteries. We also revisit the strange disappearance of George Penca, who was hiking with his church group on Yosemite's popular Upper Yosemite Falls Trail in 2011. It was a busy day, surrounded by people. And yet, George simply disappeared. Search efforts came up empty. The trail gave no clues. And like Morgan, George was just… gone.Michael Ficery's case takes us deeper into Yosemite's backcountry. In 2005, the experienced solo backpacker set out from Hetch Hetchy and was never seen again. His backpack was found along a trail—but nothing else. No remains. No other belongings. Just a pack, sitting in silence, in the middle of nowhere. And finally, not every mystery is about a disappearance. In 2005, in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, 44-year-old Arman B. Johnson was found murdered just off the highway. A single gunshot wound. No suspects. No clear motive. A life taken violently in a place known for its beauty—and still, no justice. Some of the people in this episode came back. Some didn't. Some are still missing. And in every case, one thing is clear: even in the most beautiful places on earth, the wild doesn't play by our rules. These stories aren't just about mystery. They're about real people. And if you know anything about the cases of Morgan Heimer, George Penca, Michael Ficery, or Arman Johnson, we urge you to contact authorities. Even one small tip can make all the difference. If this episode stayed with you, subscribe, rate, and review the podcast. Share it with someone. And if you want more, head over to our YouTube channel, Backwoods Bigfoot Stories, for deep dives into more strange disappearances and true crime in the wild.Until next time—stay safe, stay aware… and stay curious.Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsVisit Untold Radio AM

The end result was a comedy routine designed specifically for Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

Let me tell you about my dad. He's lived a life packed with wild adventures and some pretty amazing entrepreneurial experiments. He once turned a Hot Wheels hobby into a family trip to Hawaii. Early morning treasure hunts for rare collectible cars turned into eBay gold. Who knew toy cars could fund a family getaway? Our family adventures were just as memorable. Camping and hiking in Utah's wilderness? Check. Navigating off-trail with early GPS? Yep. Surviving surprise rainstorms? Always. He was always ready for adventure, whether pitching a tent or cracking a joke about how wet we'd all get. Now, in retirement, he's a park ranger; he spilled so many stories, from enforcing no-drone rules to a hilarious DUI arrest in the wild. Add packing trips through Nevada's Ruby Mountains, and you've got a guy who's always on the move. But it's not all outdoor adventures. My dad's dabbled in so many markets, from selling Spongebob jewelry charms (to me) to antique collectibles on eBay. He's thinking about starting a YouTube channel and even volunteering at Hawaii's Volcanoes National Park.We also talked about TikTok trends, social media income streams, and why having multiple revenue sources is a must. His curiosity and endless stories left me encouraged to keep experimenting and laughing.Stay tuned; my dad's adventures aren't over, and neither are the stories he has to tell!LET'S DO DRY JANUARY TOGETHER! "After taking my fill of nature's feisty features at Volcanoes National Park, the sun, the sand and the coastal draws of the Big Island were calling. The Kona Coast is a 100km long sweep along Hawai'i's western coast, brimming with attractions and experiences that smashed my expectations. Lined with lava fields, coffee farms, and some of Hawaii's most beautiful coastline, I wish I'd set aside more time on the Big Island to delve into its numerous delights. There are charms at every turn. The beating heart of the tourist scene is Kailua-Kona, the colourful and bustling town a short distance from Kona Airport. It incorporates Kailua Village which once a sleepy fishing village and retreat for Hawaiian royalty." Read Mike's full article here. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This year Rick travels to Washington D.C. to present his featherwork for inclusion in the collection of the Museum of the Department of Interior as well as having it on display in the office of Secretary Deborah Haaland (Laguna Pueblo). He is also a consulting advisor in historical featherwork on the upcoming TV Series "Chief of War," starring Jason Momoa. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is such a unique destination in the National Park System. Located on the Big Island, it's surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, it has rainforests, and it boasts two active volcanoes in Mauna Loa and Kilauea. A visit to Hawai'i Volcanoes comes with a number of options. Do you simply hope to catch an eruption of Kilauea and head somewhere else in Hawaii, do you explore the backcountry with its more than 160 miles of trails, or you try to soak in the Hawaiian culture? Hopefully you'll do all of that and more, because the park is so remarkable and offers so much. But it also can be a dangerous place. While the volcanoes are not explosive like Mount Saint Helens was back in 1980, visitors still can get close to Kilauea's crater, and if they ignore safety, quickly find themselves in trouble or worse. To get a better understanding of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, we're joined today by Ranger Nainoa Keanaaina, a law enforcement ranger who grew up near the park, worked in its backcountry, and now is closely involved with search-and-rescue activities and other tasks to keep visitors safe and getting the most out of their vacation.

Dian Fossey was an American conservationist and primatologist known for her work studying endangered mountain gorillas in the forests of Rwanda, where she worked from 1966 until her murder in 1985. Dian's book, Gorillas in the Mist, which was published two years before her death, chronicles her scientific work. It was later adapted into an Academy Award-nominated film starring Sigourney Weaver, which turned Dian Fossey into a household name. To this day, Dian's legacy continues, carried out by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and its remarkable CEO Dr. Tara Stoinski. The Fund itself raises money for conservation, brings awareness, and provides protection to gorillas and our planet's ecosystem while empowering communities to do the same. The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund—its new, multi-acre, eco-friendly facility—is located adjacent to Volcanoes National Park, situated along the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is a hub for scientific research and ecological preservation, where students and researchers are given the tools to better understand individual gorillas, who share 98 percent of our DNA. The campus has an exhibit available for public viewing, which is a must-do when in Volcanoes, and private, behind-the-scenes tours can also be arranged.Tara's held a fascination for animals from a young age, and for over two decades has been at the forefront of gorilla conservation. Initially as a scientist and, for nearly a decade, as the CEO of the Dian Fossey Fund. In this episode, she discusses the challenges of gorilla conservation, how special it is to experience seeing the primates firsthand, and the evolution of the fund. Plus, Melissa is joined by Indagare Productions Director, Kathryn Nathanson to share what you need to know before your gorilla trek. Listen for valuable planning tips, what to expect through the trek, and what to wear. For more information about The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, visit gorillafund.org where you can make a donation, adopt a gorilla, take the gorilla personality test, and view details about the organization's mission and what to expect on a site visit to its newest facility, The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. In this world of mokuhanga, there are artists whose passion and dedication to the art form comes not only from their work, but from how they see the medium itself. Linda J Beeman is a Michigan based mokuhanga printmaker who desires to explore nature, its conservation, its power through colour, its meaning, and aesthetic. Linda's work takes the viewer to an existing place, which when allowed in, soothes and calms, enveloped by the sacred. On this episode of The Unfinished Print I speak with Linda J. Beeman about her world, natural and artistic, how she got involved with mokuhanga, how she views her audience, her style. We discuss her time at MI Lab, and her love of artist-in-residence programs in the United States. Linda also speak on her process, her tools, and why mokuhanga is such a big part of her life. Focusing on the foreign demand for “traditional” Japanese imagery and motifs such as castles, bridges, famous landscapes, bamboo forests, to name just a few. Shin hanga was born in 1915 by Watanabe Shōzaburō (1885-1962) when he found Austrian artist Frtiz Capelari (1884-1950) and commissioned Capelari to design some prints for Watanabe's feldgling printing house . From there shin-hanga evolved into its own distinct “new” style of Japanese woodblock printing. It lasted as this distinct style until its innevitable decline after the Second World War (1939-1945). sōsaku-hanga - or creative prints, is a style of printmaking which is predominantly, although not exclusively, prints made by one person. It started in the early twentieth century in Japan, in the same period as the shin-hanga movement. The artist designs, carves, and prints their own works. The designs, especially in the early days, may seem rudimentary but the creation of self made prints was a breakthrough for printmakers beginning to move away from where only a select group of carvers, printers and publishers created woodblock prints. Watanabe Shōzaburō [渡辺 庄三郎] (1885-1962) - was the catalyst of the new print movement (shin-hanga) in the Japan of the early 20th Century. He assembled printers, designers, and carvers to re-create the now dead, ukiyo-e style, of woodblock prints in Japan. Watanabe also welcomed "foreign" artists to design prints, such as Charles Bartlett (1860-1940). His relationship with many of Japan's future woodblock stars, such as Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950), and Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) established a mokuhanga style that has been emulated ever since. Today we are headed to the mountains of Rwanda for part one of our two-part series on the story of Dian Fossey. Her unorthodox and sometimes volatile “active conservation” methods undoubtedly saved the mountain gorillas, but ultimately may have led to her demise. Her love for the animals and passion for conservation changed the tides for the future of the species – never underestimate the change one person can enact. If you're interested in volcanoes, you need not go further than our national parks to get your fill. Eighty-four units of the National Park System have volcanic resources. These parks run the gamut of having very active volcanic features to those where volcanoes formed the landscape and contribute to the geodiversity of the park. The most active volcano in our park system is Kīlauea in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. It's also one of the most monitored and researched volcanoes anywhere. This week the Traveler's Lynn Riddick talks to Professor Leif Karlstrom, whose recent research of Kilauea might be music to your ears.

This week, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund CEO Dr. Tara Stoinski joins Bruce to discuss the fascinating scientific and conservation work the organization does in the mountains of Rwanda, as well as the fund's brand-new Ellen DeGeneres Campus—a facility that will not only change how we study and protect mountain gorillas but also enhance what is already one of the world's epic travel experiences. Continuing the work of the legendary Fossey—who was murdered in Rwanda in the 1980s—Stoinski and her team of scientists have piloted what is one of the rare success stories for a critically endangered species. The foundation has monitored six generations of mountain gorillas over the years, and in that time the estimated population in the wild has gone from 240 specimens to more than 600. Stoinski discusses why mountain gorillas—which also reside in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda—are so important to protect, including the fact that they are the “gardeners” of the rainforest, helping to take care of these critical ecosystems through their foraging. She also talks about poaching, snares, and some of the other challenges gorillas face, as well as the effective measures the Rwandan government has taken over the past years to ensure their recovery. A huge step for the gorilla's future survival, the new Ellen DeGeneres Campus opened in the shadow of Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park in February. DeGeneres' wife, Portia de Rossi, kickstarted the fundraising for the project by making a large donation as a gift for DeGeneres. The beautifully designed campus features state-of-the-art labs, classrooms for everything from elementary school field trips to graduate student studies, and exhibits about Fossey, gorillas, and Rwanda. For tourists, the campus also offers behind-the-scenes experiences and even the ability (through Go2Africa) to have one of the fund's researchers accompany you on a gorilla trek. Such treks, Stoinski believes, are one of the most impactful travel experiences you can have—and are sure to convince anyone that mountain gorillas must be protected. The National Park Service and the USGS discuss what's included in the proposed Disaster Recovery Project for Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park; The state and The Cattleman's Council talk about fighting the spittlebug on Hawaiʻi Island; and the owner of L&L Hawaiian Barbecue details a new art exhibit opening in downtown Honolulu.
Grab your sunscreen, cameras and hiking shoes, this week we are heading to the incredibly diverse and magical landscapes of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. As we walk into these rainforests and barren volcanic landscapes, you can feel the mana, spiritual power, that lives here. Pele, the most revered goddess of Hawaiian Mythology, is to thank for the creation of these little islands. She has the power to destroy them and to create life. She is the spirit behind the two most active volcanoes in the entire world. Rumors have spread saying that to steal from the island is to steal from Pele and will make you cursed for many years. When people start experiencing bad luck, thousands of letters of apologies returning stolen rocks make their way to the park service. Is this curse real? Or is it actually more harmful than helpful? We love our National Parks and we know you do too but when you're out there, remember to enjoy the view but watch your back.
