It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! And nothing says Christmas like classic TV holiday specials! Over the next two weeks, we'll be toasting and roasting two of the most famous from the duo of Rankin and Bass. Which of them belongs on the Nice List and which one deserves a shiny lump of coal in its stocking. This is Legends of Christmas! Airing fifty years ago this month, based on the book by Phyllis McGinley, this Rankin and Bass special deals with every child's worst nightmare: Christmas has been canceled! After centuries of delivering presents to every child on Earth, Santa Claus is suffering from exhaustion and decides to take the year off. That means it's up to Mrs. Claus to figure out a way to save Christmas, with the help of some elves. We also meet the Miser Brothers, Heat Miser and Snow Miser, who cause trouble for Mrs. Claus as she seeks to wake Santa from his stupor. Featuring the voices of Mickey Rooney, Dick Shawn and George S. Irving, the special received a live-action remake in 2006 and an animated sequel, A Miser Brothers' Christmas, in 2008. But is The Year Without a Santa Claus better left forgotten, or will it make our list (and check it twice) of holiday classics? It's really no wonder the Nazis lost the war. They are just too stupid. Antichristmas! If you've ever wondered what would happen if a department store Santa got tangled up in a Nazi plot involving an evil elf, virgin sacrifice, and the Fourth Reich, then boy, do I have the movie for you. Elves (1989) isn't just a bad movie—it's a certifiable fever dream of absurdity, incompetence, and the kind of misguided ambition that makes it impossible to look away. Strap in, folks, because this isn't your average Christmas horror flick; it's a trainwreck wrapped in tinsel and doused in eggnog-flavored LSD. The Elf: Discount Gremlin in the Clearance Bin Let's start with the titular "elf." If you're expecting some sinister, well-designed creature, think again. The elf in Elves looks like it was cobbled together with paper mâché, a glue gun, and leftover Halloween masks from a garage sale. It's about as mobile as a garden gnome and spends most of its time menacingly staring—or, more accurately, just sitting there while the actors pretend to be scared. This thing couldn't terrorize a toddler, let alone usher in the apocalypse. The Plot: A Nazi Conspiracy, But Make It Festive You know a movie is destined for greatness when the plot hinges on Nazis breeding an elf to create the Antichrist. And the plan? Have said elf mate with a virgin before midnight on Christmas Eve. Because, of course, that's the logical way to bring about the Fourth Reich. Never mind that this plan relies entirely on the elf being both horny and punctual. The sheer stupidity of it all is chef's kiss. It's like someone spun a wheel of bad ideas and just ran with everything it landed on. The plot holes are big enough to fly a sleigh through. For instance, how is this elaborate Nazi elf scheme thwarted? Mostly by the combined incompetence of everyone involved. It's almost laughable how easily the heroes stumble into foiling it—imagine if someone like, I don't know, the mall cop had been paying attention. They'd have wrapped this whole thing up in ten minutes. Dan Haggerty: Santa's Hungover Cousin Dan Haggerty stars as Mike, a chain-smoking ex-detective who looks like Santa's cousin who didn't make the Nice List. Haggerty spends the entire movie sleepwalking through his lines with the charisma of a wet sock. His delivery is so wooden it's a miracle he doesn't spontaneously combust near the Christmas tree. And drunk? Oh, you bet. Whether he actually was or he's just an acting savant, there's an undeniable “boozy uncle” energy that only adds to the film's charm. Watching him go toe-to-toe with Nazi elves is a gift that keeps on giving. The Scenes: Bonkers with a Bow On Top Every scene in Elves feels like it was conceived in a vacuum of logic and coherence. Highlights include: A little boy staring at his sister's nude body and then getting into a tickle fight with her. Yipes! The icy cold mom getting electrocuted in the tub and teaching Ben Kingsley about death scenes. The elf randomly stabbing people, despite having no visible motor skills. Dan Haggerty barging into a Christmas dinner only to have the dad explain the Nazi/Virgin/Elf/Impregnate scheme in front of his family. By the time the movie wraps up, you'll be questioning your life choices but also kind of thankful for the chaos you just witnessed. Final Thoughts: The Christmas Catastrophe You Didn't Know You Needed Elves is a rare gem that transcends badness and loops back around into brilliance. It's not a movie; it's an experience. From the laughable special effects to the sheer audacity of its plot, to Dan Haggerty looking like he'd rather be anywhere else, Elves is the gift that keeps on giving. Gather your friends, crack open some drinks, and bask in the glow of a movie so insane it's practically a holiday tradition waiting to happen. Merry Christmas, you filthy animals. ⯑⯑

Over the next two weeks, we'll be toasting and roasting two of the most famous from the duo of Rankin and Bass. Which of them belongs on the Nice List and which one deserves a shiny lump of coal in its stocking. This is Legends of Christmas! Airing sixty years ago this month, the first Rankin and Bass Christmas special asked if you recall the most famous reindeer of all. Based on the children's book by Robert L. May, originally published by Montgomery Ward, and made perhaps even more famous by the Gene Autry version of song written by May's brother-in-law Johnny Marks. The most famous version of all is the TV special produced by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, sponsored by GE, which aired on NBC and adapted the original story into an “Animagic” stop-motion saga featuring Rudolph, Hermey, Sam the Snowman, Yukon Cornelius, the Bumble, and more. An instant classic, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer kicked off a tradition of Rankin/Bass Christmas specials, including Frosy the Snowman, Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town, and The Year Without a Santa Claus. Liberty Counsel's Naughty and Nice List classifies retailers according to whether they censor or celebrate Christmas — an allusion, of course, to Santa's list of naughty and nice children from the Christmas standard "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town."Urging Americans "to give the gift of Christmas back to the companies who support it," the group says, "If retailers choose to profit from Christmas while pretending it does not exist, we encourage you to politely explain why and then patronize their competitors." The list forms part of Liberty Counsel's annual "Friend or Foe Christmas Campaign," which the organization launched in 2003 to counter a rising tide of opposition to the public celebration of Christmas."The war against Christmas is nothing new, and it is certainly evident today in the form of religious discrimination and hostility," says Liberty Counsel founder and Chairman Mat Staver. "Repressive forces have always had the same goal — to first secularize and then to eliminate Christmas and Christian symbols, celebrations and speech. In America, the First Amendment is a guard against censorship and religious hostility. In the retail market, the consumer can decide to patronize stores that recognize Christmas and avoid those that profit from Christmas while pretending it does not exist."

It's the holiday season, and Santa isn't the only one making a list and checking it twice. Let's face it, SECURE 2.0 has a LOT of good, interesting—and potentially complicated options. But there are some that AREN'T optional, like the requirement that new plans adopted after the signing of the legislation into law have to automatically enroll eligible participants beginning in January 2025. What happens if you forget? What happens if the business is below the threshold—and then goes above it—and then slips below it? And there's something “special” about the selection of the default investment fund. And then, there's the so-called fiduciary rule (also known as the Retirement Security rule). Even if (and it's still an “if”) it's allowed to languish, there are still standards of care with regard to rollovers. There are also some “nice” things in SECURE 2.0 with regard to the ability to fix things you don't get right the first time. In this engaging episode, Nevin (Adams) & Fred (Reish) will help you make sure your list is complete —and that you don't wind up on the “naughty” list. P.S. Oh, and Fred Reish has gotten some AI assistance in composing a song about retirement (lyrics below)! Eff Trump! Oops, I meant welcome to another new episode of #RPGrinders. The last episode before the Holiday season shifts into high gear. Soon kids can look forward to a fat man in a red suit giving them presents, while the parents dread the fat man with a red tie stealing their kid's futures. Eff Trump. Since we are supposed to be nice during the holiday season, I (Break Man) will try (pinky swear) to behave myself. Eff Trump. Hopefully, Krampus will. But for all the good children of the world, Santa may drop off something special like one of these November releases. Alaloth Champions Four Kingdoms and Heaven Burns Red have already been released but Riviera the Promised Land Remastered will be out before the end of the month. Eff Trump and the MAGA family members we will be forced to deal with over the holidays. I hope they all get stockings full of coal just like the rest of the cabinet pics that made the Stinkos. It's painfully obvious that I am still very bitter about the election. Eff Trump but he is far from the only usual suspect in the Stinko line-up as the police make the Naughty list again. Worst of all, poor Bernie got hurt at work. Eff Trump but get better soon Bernie! Eff Trump. It's not his turn to do the Driver's Seat and it never will be! Just like the Nice List, it's something Trump will never see. It's my turn and I have a couple of revealing questions to ask our hosts. Do Frank, Eric, and myself have any special talents and what are our favorite foods? The Grinders might not be able to deliver billions of presents globally in under 6 hours but they do have some unique abilities. The Grinders aren't able to live on a diet of cookies and milk or Big Macs so what do they eat, and the most important question of all, what is their favorite pizza?! Eff Trump and the police. Rocks and coal for every holiday unless they get visited by three ghosts and grow hearts 3 times their normal sizes. Until Santa Claus himself announces that Trump and the police are off the Naughty List. Then and only then will I want Krampus stop pooping on their doorsteps on Christmas Eve. Eff Trump but Happy Holidays everyone! I know it's just beginning but why wait for the end to wish everyone well. Except Trump. Eff Trump. I hope "Eff Trump" doesn't get me in trouble. I was also thinking about: %#$% Trump, screw Trump, and poop sandwich.
