Vessel-whale collisions are a significant concern in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, where nutrient-rich waters support a seasonal influx of humpback whales and other marine mammals. As one of the most visited marine parks in Alaska, Glacier Bay sees a high volume of vessel traffic, including cruise ships, tour boats, and private craft. This summer an adult humpback whale was seen with a fresh, one-foot gash behind its dorsal fin which appeared to be from contact with a boat propeller.  This week the Traveler's Lynn Riddick reaches out to biologist Chris Gabriele to discuss this incident and the park's strategies to reduce whale collisions, including monitoring whale activity, warning systems, and public education.

Kim is back from her 7th Alaska cruise! This one was on Princess Cruise visiting the Inside Passage that cruises from Seattle and visits Victoria, Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagaway and sails through Glacier Bay.  Note: Kim was hosted by Princess Cruises for her trip. This cruise visits Victoria very briefly at night so not a good choice if you really want to visit Victoria When evaluating cruises, you need to look closely at the time and length in port very carefully If you do want to pick a cruise that flies out of Vancouver, it may be cheaper to fly into Seattle and take either a train or bus to Vancouver The Discovery Princess ship carries up to 4300 guests so it is a large ship about the same size as the Norwegian Bliss (which we have talked about previously) It leaves from Pier 91 in Seattle, which is a bit north of the main Seattle waterfront and port area If you sail with Princess, do the onboard check in on the app at least a month or a few weeks in advance so that you can receive your Medallions in the mail The 16th floor on the Discovery Princess is the pool deck so you may need to walk outside to get the buffet and mid-ship elevators depending on where your room is. Kim's room also had an overhang covering the balcony The cabins on the Discovery Princess are a little small, with no additional seating beyond the bed (except on the balcony) The cabin had a very generous closet space but the bathroom was quite tight (look at the cabin layout in advance) Kim went in mid-June and had amazing weather but there are no guarantees The Princess Theater was quite large  The premier package level is $80 per person, per day includes WiFi for 4 devices per person, 2 specialty dining meals, and the highest level of drink package The 360 dining experience is something you need to book when you arrive and it is a seven-course meal with courses from around the world and it includes videos from makers around the world The food on board was good but fairly standard cruise fare outside of specialty dining Princess has a lot of lounges with something going on somewhere at all time You can buy a day pass to the Sanctuary pool and area Princess has a kids club and activities but there weren't a lot of families on board but it is great for multi-generational family trips In Juneau, Kim went whale watching and it was spectacular wildlife sighting In Skagway, Kim did the White Pass Scenic Railway and "Sip to Summit" excursion In Ketchikan, Kim did a fishing excursion and after you catch fish they cook it for you on a private island Not all cruise ships in Alaska goes to Glacier Bay National Park so be sure to look for this! There seem to be better views from the left side of the ship Bigger ships have to dock further away and some need to tender to port so this is something else to consider when taking an Alaskan cruise Smaller ship (like Holland) are better for walking on and off the ship   OTHER EPISODES YOU MAY ENJOY Holland America Caribbean cruise Barge and river cruising through France NYC to Bahamas cruise on Norwegian Norwegian Bliss cruise to Alaska Disney Cruise for First-timers

New subpopulation of Deep Ocean Orcas Identified

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - A new subpopulation of Orcas has been identified in the open ocean off the coasts of Oregon and California. UBC researchers have identified 49 individual killer whales in photographs taken between 1997 and 2021.
According to Josh McInnes, a masters student in the UBC Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries and lead author of a new paper in Aquatic Animals, they may also be off the coast of British Columbia.
“I would not be surprised. Transient killer whales can have distributions that are quite large, over 2000 kilometres.  For instance, the transient type of killer whales that we do know about, that eats marine mammals in British Columbia,  can be seen anywhere between Glacier Bay (in southeast Alaska), all the way down to San Diego, California. They have large distributions and they move widely,” he explained.
“Killer whales in the Antarctic have been seen moving straight up into the South Atlantic, into the South Pacific, and even up to Australia.”
Cortes Currents: Why are scientists only just beginning to realize that there is a new subpopulation?
Josh McInnes: "A lot of the issue that we're facing, with understanding killer whale movements in the open ocean, is the effort that is involved. Surveys are super expensive, the weather out there is complete garbage half the time, and it's very difficult to get out there."
"The reason why we believe we're seeing killer whales more off California than British Columbia is the continental shelf.  This is the big stretch of underwater landmass that extends out from our continent towards what we call the continental shelf break. The break is where we separate the continental shelf from the open ocean.  It's actually quite thick.  It's quite wide off of Vancouver Island. It can go, on average, about 40 kilometers off the coast of Vancouver Island, which is a long way to get to the open ocean. Whereas in California, it's quite narrow. The open ocean comes really close to the coast.  It's sometimes within 12 kilometers.  So getting out to the open ocean is a lot easier off California and Oregon than it is off of British Columbia."

Danielle and Elizabeth caught up after a few weeks of not recording. Danielle talked about her cruise to Alaska, relaxing through Glacier Bay, seeing wildlife, but NOT cats! And how nice it was not to see stray cats everywhere since New Jersey is swamped with them right now. Tommy's Cats Rescue can barely keep up! She also talked about a scenic train ride and how scary the little rinky dinky train thingy was... They talked about cat videos on the Jersey PodCats Facebook page. Any cat lover can become a member, they're building a community. Just contact them about joining the group. Elizabeth talked about celebrating her birthday with her family in NYC, and the amazing Small is Beautiful Miniature Art gallery. She also had High Tea, and as an avid tea drinker she was in High Heaven! There was a catch up on Max's health and the other cats and vet visits - Lily had turned into a stegosaurus kitty, and also a discussion on how to help stray cats that may be found. Also the importance of spay and neuter and inside v. outside cats. They revealed a New Jersey secret, a trail in the woods with little fairy houses along the way.  Danielle revealed how many cat photos she has on her phone, and well... The conversation went on, if you ever have a question for Danielle or Elizabeth they'll be happy to answer it. They love cats and people, so question away!  Of course we want to hear from you, we love chatting with pet parents, the more cat stories the better! We dare you to top Danielle and Elizabeth with stories about weird and funny cat behavior! We think we've seen it all, but maybe not... Coastal grey wolves in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in Alaska seem to be feasting well these days on an unlikely food source - sea otters. In fact, the shorelines of Glacier Bay offer wolves a cornucopia of otters and other marine menu items, providing this carnivorous predator safe and dependable locations for food and raising offspring. This week the Traveler's Lynn Riddick speaks with park wildlife biologist Tania Lewis, whose research team is evaluation coastal wolf diets. Their goals are to identify different wolf packs and the shoreline areas important to them for feeding and reproduction. With annual visitation to Glacier Bay approaching 550,000, the team's work will be instrumental in determining whether those areas should be protected from unnecessary human disturbance.

With 73 individuals remaining, southern resident killer whales, or orcas, are the only endangered population of killer whales in the U.S. They spend the spring, summer and fall hunting for salmon throughout the inland and coastal waterways of Washington and British Columbia. Their territory overlaps with northern resident killer whales which hunt for salmon from Glacier Bay, Alaska to the central coast of Washington, and share a similar matrilineal social structure. Both groups face threats such as plummeting salmon stocks, pollution and increased maritime activity. But unlike the population of northern resident orcas, which has been steadily increasing, the southern resident population has declined over the past 20 years. A team of international scientists has now revealed another possible clue to help explain their struggle for survival. They found that adult males spent more time hunting and catching salmon than females within the southern resident population, with the foraging pattern reversed in the northern population. They also found that southern resident mothers with calves spent less time hunting than northern resident mothers. Joining us now is Jennifer Tennessen, a senior scientist at the University of Washington Center for Ecosystem Sentinels, and the lead author of the study which was published this month in the journal Behavioral Ecology.

This week For The Wild Podcast presents Part Two of a two-part conversation between guest host brontë velez and Dr. Tiffany Lethabo King. Circumferencing Dr. Tiffany Lethabo King's book The Black Shoals: Offshore Formations of Black and Native Studies, brontë and Tiffany explore sacred laughter, Black and Indigenous feminism, sexuality, liberation, ceremony, and protocol. This week we are cradled to explore where Black and Indigenous relations can meet beyond the wound. Part Two spans further inquiry into shoals, the physical desire to belong to Earth, agency, eros, spiritual correction, the pleasure and potential of failure, and that which cannot be translated, but instead has to be experienced or co-witnessed to be understood. Research for this conversation was curated by jazmín calderón torres.Recorded in January of 2021, this interview is a companion piece to a project called Can I Get A Witness, a collaborative transmedia project between For The Wild and Lead to Life. The pristine landscape of Alaska's Glacier Bay stretches as far as the eye can see. Heading out from the serenity of Bartlett Cove, the bay opens into a wide waterway dotted with islands, and flanked by snow-capped mountains that disappear into the clouds, and thick forests of spruce and hemlock, cottonwood, and alder. The bay fills a basin carved out by the Grand Pacific Glacier, which has retreated north over the last two hundred fifty years, leaving behind a frigid bejeweled body of water fringed by a series of tidewater glaciers.

The next in a fine line.Cunard announced the name of the new ship joining a world-renowned fleet, Queen Anne. Queen Anne will be Cunard's 249th ship and will make up a remarkable quartet of Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth. This will mark the first time since 1999 that Cunard will have four ships at sea.The name ‘Queen Anne' celebrates Cunard's rich heritage, royal history and refined status – joining a luxury contemporary fleet now honouring the names of each Queen Regnant over the last millennium. The Cunard team explored multiple naming options and inspired by Queen Anne's reign, engaged with British historian, author and television presenter, Kate Williams, to assist in the detailed research. Kate says, ‘It is so exciting that the fourth ship of the fleet will be named after Queen Anne. She has a fascinating tale to tell – one of queenship, unity of developing constitutional monarchy, a golden age of the arts. She was an inspiring woman, wildly popular with her people. She should be celebrated. This new ship in the Cunard fleet is the perfect way to do it!'Queen Anne will feature reimagined Cunard signature spaces as well as the introduction of new guest experiences within dining, culture and entertainment, for an unparalleled cruise experience underpinned by outstanding White Star Service.
