Today is a special treat because I've got Eisner nominated, Ringo winning, and New York Times Bestselling cartoonist Sarah Andersen on the show with me to talk about her new book Adulthood Is A Gift. The new project has over 100 illustrations and 15 personal essays about her work and some of the challenges she's faced along the way. Sarah was kind enough to carve out a little time to catch me up on her ongoing AI court case against Stable Diffusion, and she offers a few suggestions for creators to protect their work online (see below for some image protection software options.) We also got to get into her contribution to the Boom Studios horror anthology Hello Darkness, and she teases a new creative direction for the future. It's always great to get a chance to chat with her. The book is available for preorder now wherever you buy your books.

Subscribe to our newsletter at https://aidaily.us Survey Highlights Consumer Preference for Human Over AI in Customer Service A new survey indicates most consumers prefer waiting to speak with a human over using AI for customer service, with the ideal wait time around four to five minutes. Despite AI's efficiency in basic tasks, 81% of respondents would wait to talk to a human, valuing empathy and effective problem-solving. This preference underscores the continued importance of human interaction in customer service despite the rise of AI technologies. World-First AI Car Race Fails to Impress The highly anticipated Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) event in Abu Dhabi ended in disappointment when the first-ever race between driverless cars came to a premature halt. Technical issues plagued the event, leading to a spun car and halted AI vehicles, causing many spectators to leave early. Despite the setbacks, experts remain hopeful about future improvements in autonomous racing technology. The event aimed to showcase AI capabilities but highlighted the challenges of translating AI performance into competitive racing. Apple Faces Major Sales Decline as AI Integration Lags Apple is anticipated to report its largest quarterly revenue drop in over a year this Thursday, amid sluggish AI rollout and increasing competition in China. The iPhone, comprising about half of Apple's revenue, is expected to see a 10.4% sales decrease. The tech giant has struggled against rivals like Huawei and is in discussions with OpenAI and Google to enhance iPhones with AI features. This strategy aims to revive interest and boost sales, particularly through the upcoming iPhone 16 series expected in the fall. Newspaper Giants Sue OpenAI and Microsoft Over AI Eight newspapers, owned by Alden Global Capital and including prominent titles like The Chicago Tribune and The New York Daily News, have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft. The suit, lodged in the Southern District of New York, alleges copyright infringement for using copyrighted articles to train AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. The newspapers argue this unauthorized use bypasses subscription paywalls, decreasing their revenue. They seek a jury trial and compensation. Artists File Copyright Lawsuit Against Google's AI Image Generator Artists have taken legal action against Google, alleging copyright infringement by its AI-powered image generator, Imagen. Filed in California, the lawsuit involves creators like Jingna Zhang and Sarah Andersen, who claim their work was included in the LAION-400M dataset used for training Imagen. This dataset comprises 400 million images and captions, which the artists argue were used without proper licensing or compensation. AI's Growing Influence in Scientific Publishing Recent analysis reveals that 1% of scientific papers in 2023 might have involved generative AI, signaling a subtle shift in scientific writing influenced by AI chatbots like ChatGPT. Signs of AI usage include specific phrases and a rise in AI-identified words such as "intricate" and "commendable." While AI aids in drafting, its factual inaccuracies, or 'hallucinations', especially in generating fictitious citations, pose significant risks. Experts caution against over-reliance on AI for scientific content, emphasizing the technology's current limitations and the potential for introducing errors into research. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/aidaily/message

Old Dominion Freight Line, a transport company facing a federal lawsuit over alleged violations of the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), distributed a one-page waiver to its employees to sign voluntarily, releasing the company from the statute's obligations. This move follows the state Supreme Court's Cothron v. White Castle decision, which expanded the potential for huge damages awards under BIPA, leaving companies increasingly exposed to BIPA liability risks in Illinois. The release offers employees $500 if they voluntarily agree not to sue the company and its affiliates from all claims under BIPA. The strategy is seen as a legal attempt to mitigate exposure to BIPA liability risks. While Illinois law allows the validity of releases, the exception to the rule is willful or wanton conduct. No case law currently exists on retroactive BIPA exemption waivers, and whether the strategy succeeds is an open question. Privacy lawyers said releases such as the one used by Old Dominion aren't uncommon and could help reduce BIPA litigation exposure, but some lawyers said the releases may not prevent employees from joining class actions.Old Dominion's Biometric Waiver Offers Creative Legal TacticDominion Voting Systems' defamation lawsuit against Fox Corp has ended with a $787.5 million settlement, marking the end of a lucrative two-year legal battle for the large teams of highly-paid lawyers on both sides. At least 31 lawyers from nine different law firms worked on the case. Dominion accused Fox News of broadcasting false claims that the company's voting machines were involved in a conspiracy to rig the 2020 U.S. presidential election, and won one of the biggest settlements paid in a defamation lawsuit. Law firm Susman Godfrey, one of two firms that represented Dominion in the case, was hired on a contingency, or success-fee, basis. Partners at large corporate law firms like those representing Fox sometimes bill more than $2,000 per hour. Dominion's lead lawyers at Susman Godfrey included partners Justin Nelson, Stephen Shackelford and Davida Brook. Staple Street Capital Group LLC, the small buyout firm that owns Dominion, is also set to receive a major windfall from the settlement.Lawyers win big in $787.5 million Fox defamation case | ReutersThe US Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the Mall of America outside Minneapolis, allowing it to challenge an inexpensive lease signed with Sears Holdings Corp in 1991, which it claims it should no longer be bound to. The lease provided Sears with a three-story, 120,000-square foot location at the mall for a rent of just $10 a year. The Mall of America has argued that it should be allowed to charge more to rent the space Sears had occupied since it was subsequently sold to a new owner during the department store chain's bankruptcy. The ruling means that MOAC Mall Holdings can proceed with its challenge to the lease in a lower court. Sears filed for bankruptcy in 2018 and its assets were sold for $5.2bn to former chairman Eddie Lampert and his hedge fund ESL Investments.US Supreme Court allows Mall of America to fight cheap Sears lease | ReutersAI companies Stability AI, Midjourney, and DeviantArt are asking a San Francisco federal court to dismiss a lawsuit filed by artists Sarah Andersen, Kelly McKernan, and Karla Ortiz in January. The artists accused the companies of committing mass copyright infringement by using their work in generative AI systems without authorization. The companies argue that the AI-generated images are not similar to the artists' work and that the lawsuit did not identify any specific images that were allegedly misused. They also argue that the lawsuit does not identify any work by the plaintiffs that the companies supposedly used as training data. The legal battle between artists and AI companies highlights the challenges of prosecuting copyright infringement cases involving generative AI systems. As AI algorithms are designed to create new works by training on large data sets, it is difficult to prove that any one image was used to create a specific output. The companies have thus asked a San Francisco federal court to dismiss the proposed class action lawsuit, arguing that the AI-generated images are not substantially similar to the artists' work and that the lawsuit did not identify any specific images that were allegedly misused – but if the underlying technology requires the use of the images, or images like them, in order to create the model that generates the output, is that not infringement? It is unclear. The case underscores the need for greater clarity on the legal implications of AI-generated works and the importance of developing new standards to protect the rights of artists and other content creators in the digital age.AI companies ask U.S. court to dismiss artists' copyright lawsuit | Reuters Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

When the 2015 United States Brewers Cup champion Sarah Andersen was announced as the winner, Tom Jones' "She's A Lady," started playing. It was a strange and confusing moment in the competition - because no weirdly gendered anthem played for any of the other competitors. Sabine Parrish decided to study this phenomenon - why are women treated differently at coffee competitions. In her essay, cheekingly called, "She's A Lady," she explores how women are marginalized in the coffee industry. She did this by collecting hundreds of stories. Women across the nation submitted their personal experiences with sexism behind the bar, and Sabine used that to publish one of the most important pieces of research the coffee industry has ever seen. We talk to Sabine about her findings and what she hopes to see in the future.

Sarah Andersen’s hilarious third collection, Herding Cats, features the two time Goodreads Choice Award favorite continuing to poke fun at herself and her insecurities, her cat obsession, and the inherent humor in the daily life of a young woman. Sarah’s imaginative and right-on-target comics explore the complexities of being an introvert, a millennial, a young woman, and an artisit with a distinctive, quirky, and honest style. Readers will relish her latest installment with a warm feeling of solidarity and familiar recognition, as she depicts the challenges in navigating real life and the Internet-infused world of today in a humorous, refreshingly candid, and poignant manner.
It’s getting tougher to grow up these days. We’re surrounded by endlessly reflecting images of everyone else having fun without us. There are incredible pressures to achieve, to be ourselves and be different, to stand up and stand out, to follow big footsteps… and follow our hearts at the same time. A friend said to me the other day “When I was in high school and I’d stay at home on a Saturday night I assumed my friends did, too. Now my daughter sees all her friends out partying without her on social media. Right after they told her they were busy.” It broke my heart. But it’s happening right alongside rising anxiety, loneliness, and depression rates around the world. So what does coming-of-age look like these days? How do we keep our children safe, raise our families, tap back into our best selves, and stay focused on what matters most? These days I don’t think anybody is addressing those big questions better than Sarah Andersen, author of Sarah’s Scribbles. Every one of her cartoons taps into the feelings of anxiety, awkwardness, and stresses of growing up in the digital age. It’s no wonder her work has gained millions of followers, scored numerous awards, and resulted in three bestselling comic books including her award-winning debut Adulthood is a Myth and her newest Herding Cats. I am so excited to share my conversation with the incredible Sarah Andersen of Sarah’s Scribbles, recorded above the clouds at the very top of the western hemisphere’s tallest building. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: How do we balance our desire to stand out and fit in? How can we tap into the purest versions of ourselves? How can we break free from the rigid rules of artwork and unleash our artistic freedom? Which systems enable online abuse and how can we curb this without provoking censorship? Why is it so difficult for artists to monetize their work online? Where should aspiring artists start if they'd like to start publishing their work? How do we balance our desire to learn more and contentment with where we're at? How do we connect with our most childlike parts of ourselves? How do we disappear into other worlds while remembering who we are? How do our family reading habits affect our own -- and what should we watch out for? What new distribution channels can we harness to share our art? And what are the risks? Which areas of online harassment can we be more aware of and how do we protect ourselves and our families? Derek is back at his local shop, Collected Comics and Games in Plano, TX, for the March on-location episode of podcast. (Unfortunately that was no February episode at Collected due to unforeseen circumstances.) While there, he talks with several shop employees and customers about a variety of comics-related matters. Folks spend a lot of time discussing some of the titles they've been reading lately. Matt Kuzio, who usually participates in these shows, was unable to be there this month, but he shared in absentia some of the comics he's been enjoying, including Emma Ríos and Kwei Lim's Mirror (Image Comics), Kate Leth and Brittney Williams'a Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! (Marvel Comics), Chris Lewis and Tony Gregori's Karma Police (Comics Experience), and Sarah Andersen's Adulthood Is a Myth: A Sarah's Scribbles Collection (Andrews McMeel Publishing). Sabrina, the shop manager, talks up some of the preview copies she's been receiving, such as the first issues of Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber's The Fix (Image Comics), Christopher Sebela and Robert Wilson IV, Heartthrob (Oni Press), and Matthew Rosenberg and Tyler Boss's 4 Kids Walk into a Bank (Black Mask Comics). Chris, a regular customer of Collected, discusses his enthusiasm for Angela Queen of Hel (Marvel). And shop employee, Stephanie, mentions Marguerite Bennett and Ariela Kristantina's Insext, although Derek references his less-than-enthusiastic discussion of the title in the recent publisher spotlight on AfterShock Comics. There's also quite a bit of talk over recent comics in TV and film -- such as the new Lucifer series and the second season of Daredevil -- and, on a very special note, everyone there sings the praises of Andy Hirsh, a local artist (and friend of the show) who is also a Collected customer. His series, The Baker Street Peculiars (written by Roger Langridge and published by BOOM! Studios) just began this month, and his new book, Varmints, is due for release this fall from First Second. Needless to say, there's plenty to discuss, and the guys cover a lot of ground this month!
