It's time to stock up on all your favorite Girl Scout cookies, everything from the classic Thin Mints and Peanut Butter Patties to the newer offerings like Lemonades. Each year, Girl Scouts around the country sell these tasty treats to raise money for their troops, but the lessons they learn are far deeper than just shelling out shortbread. Monica Roberts, the new Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts, talks with Nichole about this season's sale, a flavor that's going away (so you'll want to stock up!), and her vision for the future of Girl Scouting here in Massachusetts.
Don't worry about filling someone else's shoes. Bring your own. -Monica Roberts Meet Monica Roberts, Senior Vice President & Executive Director of City Year Greater Boston www.cityyear.org. A lifelong resident of Boston, Monica was raised in a home full of faith, rules, and love. She credits her mother for advocating for her and her siblings, reminding them about the value of a strong education. In this interview, Monica shares the story of her father, the son of a sharecropper from Mississippi who quit school at 12 to work in the fields and later completed his education. Monica's father was a man of service who worked as a truck driver through the night, often distributing food to the needy and plowing his neighbor's driveways during snow storms. As a preacher in their local church, her dad did not allow his daughters to wear makeup or go to the movie theater. A first-generation college graduate with degrees from Brandeis and Boston College, Monica comes to her position at City Year with extensive experience in public education, having served seven superintendents over a fifteen-year period. Before taking the reins at City Year Greater Boston, she worked at Peace First, a national non-profit, where she honed her leadership skills. For Monica, City Year is a life-changing opportunity for young men and women between the ages 18-25 who support the education of children enrolled in their partner schools. Originally founded in 1988 as a community-based service organization, the mission has expanded and City Year members are changing the lives of kids from kindergarten through high school every day. Grounded in the belief that young people can shape our world, City Year members are role models. Says Monica: “They connect with kids and cheer them on. The City Year red jacket symbolizes the deep investment we have made in the communities we serve.” @cityyear @cityyearboston #community

Rainbow on the Green -- Monica Roberts Resource CenterWe speak with Barry Mandel about Rainbow on the Green, the large pride event held downtown at Discovery Green. Discovery Green presents its annual citywide LGBTQ celebration with electrifying entertainment. This year, Rainbow on the Green presented by Legacy Community Health will honor the courageous families who have spoken out against legislation meant to deny medical treatment to trans-gender children. The line-up features award-winning local drag queens, Houston's own powerhouse vocalist Christina Wells, a veteran of America's Got Talent, and as the headliner, iconic vocal group, The Kinsey Sicks. Known as "America's Favorite Dragapella Beautyshop Quartet" their original music and parodies performed a cappella has entertained and inspired millions around the world for decades. Award-winning local drag queens, Angelina DM Trailz, Serena, and Hu'Nee Bee! Special recognition and an award will be given to an activist in the LGBTQ community. Three-time Emmy winner and KPRC's Houston Life host, Derrick Shore, will be the evening's emcee and DJ Joe Ross will keep the party spinning. GUEST: Barry Mandelhttps://www.discoverygreen.com/rainbowonthegreen Then, we speak with activist Jevon Martin about his mission to establish the Monica Roberts Resource Center. Monica Roberts, the late transgender journalist and groundbreaking advocate, did what most major news outlets and law enforcement fail to do: accurately document the history and lives of trans people throughout the country. After her death in 2020, New York activist Jevon Martin partnered with other LGBTQ advocates to create a resource center in her honor. “Losing her was like losing our history,” says Martin, a Black trans man who oversees Princess Janae Place, a New York nonprofit designed to help trans folk transition from homelessness to independent living. “This resource center is gonna carry her legacy. It's important to know the people that paved the road that you're walking on.” The Monica Roberts Resource Center (MRRC) will honor trans Pride with its first-ever celebration at 6 p.m. on June 24 at Maceo's, a local events venue owned by a lesbian couple. The free Pride event will include an awards ceremony to recognize trans individuals and business owners in Houston for their service and advocacy. A company's personnel make it great. And exceptional people seek out leading brands. Recruiters are increasingly actively seeking the best applicants, even those who aren't actively looking. Employer branding can help you compete with large organizations with well-known brands. According to LinkedIn research, an employer brand is twice as likely to be linked to job consideration as a corporate brand. In this episode of PCTY Talks, Monica Robert and host Shari Simpson discuss how having a great brand identity can help you attract great talent. Guest: Monica Roberts Vice President of Talent Acquisition Guest Bio: As Vice President of Talent Acquisition, she is responsible for shaping the vision and strategic initiatives that enable Paylocity to compete for the top talent in the market. Doing so also involves collaborating with business leaders, HR leaders, and external partners. She has a well-developed point of view and drives a strong and efficient methodology that sets us up a successful, motivated workforce today and beyond while delivering a high-touch experience. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and prior to joining Paylocity, spent 17 years with Abbott. During that time, She held many roles with increasing responsibilities, including a 2.5-year expatriate assignment in Singapore leading Abbott's APJ Talent Acquisition team. In her last role, she led global talent acquisition for Devices, Diagnostics, and Nutrition organizations, setting the strategy and successfully leading a team of internal recruiters and external partnerships. She believes that the ability to attract high-performing, top talent is a direct reflection of a company's culture and that recruiting teams are integral partners to the business. By translating market trends into executable plans, we're enabled to continue delivering best-in-class products and services.

Tonight, we are rebroadcasting our conversation with Monica Roberts here on Blog Talk Radio with a special opening tribute! The world has lost a giant, a queen, an award-winning blogger, a Texas legend, LGBTQ+ advocate, Transgender activist, and a beloved sister/friend, Monica Roberts. She made her transition on October 5th from natural causes. Tributes were held across the country. Her BTAC/BTWI family held a memorial tribute in Dallas. Her Houston, TX hosted the three-day celebration of her life on October 23-25. Her influence was felt across the country in the struggle for not only Transgender Equality and Rights but in the ongoing strruggle for social justice for all. She was one of the first and repeat guests on Collections by Michelle Brown. I spoke with Monica not long before her transition. Of course, we talked about politics not just the presidential election but elections across the country. We talked about the vacancy on the Supreme. We talked about the Corona Virus and its devastating effect on Black, Brown, and LGBTQ+ communities. We talked about the work before us as community activists leading up to and after the election. And we checked in with one another as friends about life - our health, families, finances. As always, we ended the conversation saying, “Love you, sis!”

How do we define them? Why are they so gosh dang hard to maintain? When can boundaries be unhealthy? Is being selfish a bad thing? Remember babes, empathy without boundaries is self-destruction. The Black Trans Advocacy Conference (BTAC) is not just a convention, it's a joyful family reunion. This year the gathering celebrated its 5th anniversary with attendees from across the country and as far away as Jamaica. BTAC is a unique life changing five day program that furthers education, provides linkage to resources, community building and organizing, leadership development and celebration of diverse identities.Winners at this year’s gala awards ceremony included Elle Hearns (Monica Roberts Advocacy Award); Angelica Ross, Bryanna Jenkins, Yusuf James and Wriply Bennet (BTAC Trailblazer Award); Aurora Jonez (Community Ally award), and DeeDee Watters (Advocate of the Year). Each day transgender people are faced with bias that affects all areas of life. According to Injustice at Every Turn: A Look at Black Respondents in the National Transgender Discrimination Survey, Black trans and gender non-conforming people reported experiencing the highest levels of discrimination of all transgender people based on the combination of anti-transgender bias with structural and individual racism. Black Trans Advocacy, through its national advocacy center and affiliate state chapters works daily to advance social equality with specific focus on inequities faced in the black and transgender human experience.Hear about this year’s BTAC celebration = what was learned, what was shared, what was celebrated this Wednesday at 8:30PM EST/7:30PM CST on CAN WE TALK FOR REAL, your award winning blogtalk radio. February is supposed to be the month of love and romance. The year is 2015 and in January and February the lives of Trans Woman have not matter because 6 have already been killed. There is no national or local uproar for justice for the families, friends or the victims. There are no marches scheduled through social media with expecting crowds of 1000 or more expressing outrage. There are however organizations that are raising theirs voices and hoping you join them as this is a trend that MUST STOP NOW. Joining co-host Ina, Michelle and Terry Wednesday night, February 25th will be Monica Roberts, aka the TransGriot, is a native Houstonian and a trailblazing award winning trans community leader. She has lobbied since 1998 for trans human rights protections at the federal, state and local levels in Kentucky and Texas. January 2006 she founded the award winning blog TransGriot. We will talk about why the deaths of 6 transgender women have had little mainstream media attention, no community leadership out cry, nothing. New Orleans LGBT youth of color activist group, The BreakOUT stated in the Feb 10th news story, "The silence and lack of action from media on behalf of the Black transgender community sends a strong message that Black Trans Lives, in fact, do not matter." At last count 5 black transgender women and 1 Latina transgender woman have lost their lives. Where are the black and latina leaders that scream when a black or latina man or woman are killed for no reason? When does a human life not matter and who determines that?
When you think about the current state of trans activism, the name Janet Mock is probably at the top of your mind. But there was a time when Mock was living a relatively low-profile life, working as a journalist outside the spotlight… until a friend recommended her for a profile in Marie Claire magazine. The article’s publication changed the course of her work, and life—lucky for all of us. "I didn't plan the role model part of it or the advocate part of it," she explains. "I think that all just kind of started. I realized after the piece came out that there was such a hunger to hear more about young trans women of color experiences. I think my writing just kind of went there because I think there was a need to hear more about that and I think there was also a need within myself to share more about parts of myself that I'd kept silent for so long." Janet's still a writer, but now she's also an activist - and one of the most recognizable faces in trans advocacy. In many ways, she's become the role model she herself didn't have while growing up. "People often say that I'm a role model," she says. "I feel like I'm a real model. Like, there's a real model of how you can do it. I'm existing. I'm out in the world. I'm still discovering who I am. I'm not playing a role. I'm being real. This is my life." In her book, Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More, she tells her story and shares some of what she's learned along the way. On this week's show, we talk to Janet about her work, her life, and the wisdom she hopes to impart on today's trans girls of color. "The biggest lesson that I've ever learned in my life is to just truly fight for who you are, and not let anyone - not even your own body - tell you that you can't do something that you know you're supposed to be doing." When we asked Janet who some of her own role models are, she name checked TransGriot blogger Monica Roberts. Monica is a long-time friend and auntie to the show, so we thought we’d close this episode with some words of wisdom from her, recorded when she was in town last summer.
You know her from her groundbreaking work as the TransGriot, and a frequent commentator on Strange Fruit. We know her as our Auntie Monica! Award-winning blogger Monica Roberts stopped by the Strange Fruit Studios on a recent visit to Louisville, and we checked in with her about the state of trans human rights. While Monica's blog covers a little bit of everything—"sports, feminism, human rights, whatever I feel like talking about," she says—the overarching focus is the lives of transgender women of color. Why a trans women of color blog rather than a general trans women blog? "Trans people of color experience a transition much differently from our white counterparts," Monica explains. "We are impacted negatively by racism that we deal with in our parent society, and even in the LGBT ranks." Even within the transfeminine community, there are challenges unique to different segments of the population. "The issues that I face as a trans woman of African descent, and the issues that a trans woman of Latina descent faces are two different issues," she says. "I don't have to deal with, like a Latina woman does, being jacked up on the street for immigration issues. But both of us do have to deal with stop and frisk." We also take you along as we visit an after-school spoken word poetry workshop, where high school students—largely LGBTQ and African American—work through tricky subjects like oppression and identity, through their writing. And in our Juicy Fruit segment, we get an update on Michael Sam, released by the Rams, picked up by the Cowboys' practice squad, and obsessed over by ESPN when it comes to showering with the team. We also talk about a conservative commentator who thinks gay people should pay more for life insurance, and learn about Dr. Story's first book, "Patricia Hill Collins: Reconceiving Motherhood."
Creating a change in you is not an easy task, Bringing an entire community together to Create Change in hard work from dedicated people who are living and breathing change for the masses. Joining CWT4R Wednesday Night will be Monica Roberts the TransGriot and Founding Editor Transgriot. Join Ina, Michelle, and Terry Boi as we talk about Creating Change and learn a little more about what we will be experiencing in 10 more days. Monica is a writer, blogger, history buff, and lecturer on transgender issues. Monica’s an advocate with a special emphasis on not only getting African-American transpeople and other voices of color more involved in empowering themselves, educating the GLBT community about our issues, but also shedding light about the struggles of GLBT people in Africa, Jamaica and across the Diaspora. Monica transitioned in 1994 and works diligently at educating and encouraging acceptance of transgender people in the larger African-American community as well. Monica is a vital part of planning this year’s Creating Change. There are many surprises that await the conference goers. If you listed to last weeks’ show she gave you a little pre-view of what will be going on at the conference. The National Gay and Lesbian task Force has organized and networked to bring Creating Change to Houston, Texas. The conference will be held for 5 days with approximately over 350 workshops, various training sessions, plenary sessions and other opportunities to network, (please see the Creating Change website conference information). Based on the Creating Change website it is expected to be over 3500 to be in attendance.

It continues to shock me that in a group of oppressed people (like the transgender community) how much there is oppression/pre-judgment/racism in our community. You would think a person that has been pre-judged simply for how they dress would be a little more understanding about people being pre-judged on the color of their skin. Well, this show is going to open some eyes (if we have open ears and hearts) about the race issues in and about the transgender community. I will have two guests that are good friends of mine that will offer a perspective on this topic that might be a little direct and maybe even difficult for some to hear but that is needed. Jaison Gardner and Monica Roberts join me for this very important topic. Jaison is a community activist and organizer in the Louisville area and a board member of the Fairness Campaign along with a co-founder and President of the Derby City Black Pride Organization. Monica Roberts is our other vrey special guest. She is a trans human rights advocate and blogger. Many of you might know her blog, "TransGriot" Blog. Monica is also involved in activist work in the Houston, TX area. Listeners can call in live during the show. Thanks!
