How did there come to be so few African American educators in the US PK-12 system? In 1950, half of all Black professionals in the United States (US) were teachers, compared to less than a quarter of white professionals (Cole, 1986). Yet, according to the National Center of Educational Statistics, of the 3.8 million teachers in the US teaching profession during the 2017/18 school year, African American teachers only represented 250,000. African American teachers are entering the education system, but factors contributing to why we leave are at the center of many educational scholars' research agendas.   In partnership with the Community of Scholars Program (COSP) at the University of Minnesota, in this episode, listen as Tiffany Lachelle takes you through her attrition story. She reveals details about her decision, and the decision of some other African American teachers in the United Arab Emirates, to leave the US  PK-12 profession for teaching opportunities abroad. You can redirect to moremomentum.com to mooremomentum.com. The same goes for five vs 5 Core life. I think you have a brand conflict. If you cashed out for $323 Million in 2019 why are you using a free media host and doing ads for .017 cents per download? I hate to be blunt, but your audio is unacceptable. It sounds like you're using your phone on speaker and its feet away from your mouth. Please go find a show in the top 200 that uses their phone to create a podcast. Invest in a Samson Q2u see https://supportthisshow.com/q2u and use Squadcast to record remote interviews https://supportthisshow.com/squadcast Your anchor ad sounded better (still a fair amount of background noise), but when you actually started the show it was HORRIBLE. There are 1.8 million podcasts, and you are in the self-improvement genre (LOTS of competition). see https://podcastindustryinsights.com/apple-podcasts-statistics/ As this is an honest first impression, I barely made it past the 1-minute mark.I wanted to hear about gamification for self-improvement. * Review - Change can be seen one of two ways: 1) A threat, 2) an opportunity - A threat is seen as something we must survive - An opportunity is seen as something that is possible * Review - You cannot dream in survival (or threat) mode. * In the midst of areas of upheaval and change in 2020/21, right now, how are you viewing and feeling about change? * What areas of your life feel most 'threatened' and what areas feel like you are able to see opportunities and dream? * Read Isaiah 43:14-19 * Where have you seen God's faithfulness in the past? Are you able to trust that he will be faithful in the future? * Is there anything you need to grieve/consider/work through in order to see and accept that God wants to do a new thing? Are you looking back longingly? What can you do to be able to move forward? (if none, consider/discuss tools/help!) * Read Luke 5:36-39 // Review 4 points - 1) You can't get new along with the old 2) Looking back longingly reduces God's ability to do new things 3) Don't limit God and the ways he can work 4) Expect God to do things that will stretch your faith

052 | Your Business Sucks and What You Can Do About It

Business Built Freedom

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 4, 2019 4:57

Your business sucks, and what you can do about it. Honestly, most business owners are their own worst enemy, and they suck the life out of their business and stop it progressing. They can be terrible at taking responsibility, and they push anything that's accountable on to other people. It's a classic trait with a lot of the businesses that are starting up now that are run by millennials. They want to have all the things, but they don't want to spend the time to get all the things. Looking Back After being in business for 19 years, I can comfortably say that it takes a long time. You're not going to be a millionaire in a year. It's going to take you a long time to get to where you want to go, and where your goals are in life. The last thing you want to be doing is sucking the life out of your business. It could be anything that you're doing. You might be on Facebook a bit too much. Your Diet might not be great. Your direction might not be great. Review You need to review where your time goes, and assess what is important to you in business. For me, I know when I analyse myself, I stepped back and looked at my life retrospectively only a few years ago. I thought, "Where am I? Where do I want to be, and how the hell did I end up here?" It was a scary time. Things passed through my mind where I thought maybe I'll jump out of business, I don't know if this is what I should be doing, maybe my time is better spent somewhere else. I had a lot of reflection time of about two months, to be honest. That's where I came to the conclusion I love my business, and I wanted it to continue to be the vehicle to success, and I've made it that. I was overweight. I was 110 kilos. I didn't have the best eating habits. I didn't have the best drinking habits. That's not to say that I was drinking excessively, but I wouldn't mind a pint or two over dinner. I wasn't getting smashed, but I would sit there and watch TV on the idiot box while eating crap food and having a couple of beers, which was a lot of empty, unneeded calories. Make Positive Change I was working well when I was working, but I wasn't really pushing myself as fast and as far forward as I wanted to. A lot of people have this and a lot of people look to different crutches such as smoking or something like that. You need to take the time out and have a think about why you're in business, and where you want to be in a year, or in a month, or in 10 years, or what you're going to be remembered for, and what's going to be said at your eulogy when you pass away. What are the legacies you're leaving behind? I changed from a heavy in meat and carbohydrate diet, to a diet that consists of 80% raw vegetables, and I'm very happy that I did that. I managed to lose 38 kilos in six months and, for the most part, keep that weight off. My mental status is so much better than what it was beforehand because I did this. Going to the gym releases chemicals in your body that make you feel good. Not only that, when you're talking to prospects they can see that your life is under control. You've got control over your own body, you've got control of your own image, and that means that ultimately, other aspects of your life you have control of. I'm not saying if you're overweight, you don't have control. Obviously there's lots of reasons why people can be obese, and why people might have a few extra kilos to lose, and everyone has image problems. No one's happy with how they look. Just knowing that you've done that and the success that you have in your own head from doing that, is more important than what anyone else can ever think. Become the person you aspire to be. When you sit back, and you'll think about your life retrospectively, you'll come to realise that the prison that you've created can be escaped. Final Thought There's a saying that goes, "you must first realise the prison of your mind before you can escape it." Be there and get rid of those bad thoughts. Be the person that you're meant to be, and be the best person you can be in business.

How to GET PROMOTED

Getting promoted sometimes feels like a mysterious process. We all have seen that colleague that was “surprised” to get that promotion. I am here to tell you that for top performers, promotions are not a mystical process. They are a process that you must methodically implement to ensure that you maintain a career trajectory that will get you where you want to go.   If you prefer to listen or watch about this content, we have also produced a YouTube and Podcast on the subject.  Let’s use the acronym PROMO to remember the steps we must take to achieve our goal. Plan Review Objectives Maximize Outspoken   Plan – We must have a career plan that we revisit regularly. This will help us to ensure we are actually on a career path and not drifting through work. Review – You must review your plan regularly and also review it with your boss to ensure that he/she is aligned with your career plan. Objectives – You must work with your boss to set realistic performance levels or objectives so that you know what you must achieve to get promoted to the next level. Maximize – Ok, I am stretching here. What I really mean is EXECUTE. Get as much done as possible. If you want to be promoted, you need to be seen as an individual who really gets things done. Outspoken – When you do get things done, don’t be content being in the background. Look for opportunities to communicate your accomplishments. Creating visibility for your high level of achievement is critical to getting regularly promoted. By incorporating the PROMO strategy into your career as a regular part of what you do, you can achieve a career path where you receive promotions every 2–4 years. This becomes much harder to do once you reach Director and VP, but in the first 12 years of your career, you should strive for regular promotions. If you can’t achieve this at your current company, it may be time for some self-reflection or a job change.
