Sermon: The Gift of the Holy Spirit Series: Living in the Spirit Introduction: The Greatest Gift * The Christmas story is about God's love demonstrated through the gift of Jesus Christ. * Just as the angels proclaimed the arrival of peace and goodwill to shepherds, God's ultimate plan was not only to save but also to dwell within us through the Holy Spirit. * Christmas is a time of giving, and through the Holy Spirit, God gives us gifts that transform, empower, and guide us. I. The Holy Spirit: A Promise Fulfilled * Luke 2:11: “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” * Jesus' birth fulfilled the promise of redemption, paving the way for the gift of the Spirit. * The miracle birth of Jesus through the Holy Spirit made the rebirth of mankind possible through the Holy Spirit. * John 14:16-17: Jesus promised His disciples a Helper who would live with and in them, ensuring they were never alone. * Just as the shepherds rejoiced at the news of Christ's birth, we rejoice in the Spirit's presence. II. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit comes bearing gifts that enable us to live out the message of Christmas every day. Emanuel, God is with us! He is with us because He is in us when we serve others; we become His hands and feet as the body of Christ to manifest His presence all around us. 1. The Gift of Adoption * Romans 8:15: “You have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!'” * Through the Holy Spirit, we are made children of God, part of His family, and heirs of His promises. * This adoption reflects the inclusiveness of the shepherds' message—available to all who believe. 2. The Gift of Comfort and Peace * John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” * Just as the angels proclaimed peace on earth, the Spirit gives us an internal peace that surpasses all understanding, especially in trials. 3. The Gift of Guidance * John 16:13: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” * The wise men followed a star; today, we follow the Spirit, who illuminates God's will and guides us in our decisions. 4. The Gift of Power * Acts 1:8: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.” * Through the Spirit, we are empowered to live boldly for Him, spreading His message of salvation. 5. The Gift of Transformation * Galatians 5:22-23: The fruit of the Spirit transforms us from within, reflecting Christ in our character. * This inner transformation mirrors the miraculous nature of Christmas—a world forever changed by the Savior's arrival. III. The Spiritual Gifts in Scripture In addition to these foundational gifts, the Holy Spirit equips us with unique gifts for ministry and service. 1. The Gifts of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:8-10) * Wisdom, Knowledge, Faith, Healing, Miracles, Prophecy, Discernment, Tongues, and Interpretation of Tongues. * These gifts demonstrate the Spirit's power in supernatural ways, enabling us to minister effectively to others. 2. The Gifts for Building the Church (Ephesians 4:7-13) * Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers. * These leadership gifts equip the body of Christ for works of service and maturity in faith. 3. The Sevenfold Spirit (Isaiah 11:2-3) * The Spirit of the Lord, Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Might, Knowledge, and Fear of the Lord. * These attributes empower us to live godly lives and make decisions that align with God's will. 4. The Motivational Gifts (Romans 12:3-8) * Prophesying, Serving, Teaching, Encouraging, Giving, Leading, and Showing Mercy. * These gifts reflect the diversity of God's design for His church, allowing every believer to contribute uniquely. IV. Living in the Spirit: A Life of Overflowing Gifts * As we receive these gifts, we are called to share them with others: 1. The Gift of Adoption leads us to welcome others into God's family. 2. The Gift of Comfort equips us to comfort those in pain. 3. The Gift of Guidance helps us lead others to the truth. 4. The Gift of Power emboldens us to share the gospel. 5. The Spiritual Gifts enable us to build the church and fulfill our unique callings. The Charge: Receiving and Sharing the Gift * The angels' proclamation of Christ's birth reminds us that the most incredible gifts bring glory to God and benefit others. * This Christmas, let us celebrate the Holy Spirit—the continuation of God's gift of Emmanuel, “God with us.” * As we embark on the Living in the Spirit Series, may we embrace His gifts and live a life that reflects His presence. -- Praise Tabernacle Dr. Joshua Kennedy, Pastor 2235 Ocean Heights Egg Harbor Township, NJ 08234 pastorjosh@praisetabernacle.com praisetabernacle.church (609) 927-4560(w)
Be Compassionate and merciful.
Some people believe showing mercy is a sign of weakness, but is that true? In this message, we will look at a time when the future King of Israel, David, had every opportunity to get back at his worst enemies but chose to do the most unexpected thing and show mercy instead.
Forgiveness is one of the hardest choices we'll ever have to make. For one, they don't deserve it. And secondly, we don't feel like it. But the reason we give forgiveness and show mercy is because we need it ourselves. Mercy is a gift given to those who show it.
It is rightly said: "God gives His anger by weight but His mercy without measure." Mercy is the communication of God's essential goodness to humanity and is the only hope of humanity. The Beatitudes teach us that once God shows mercy to a sinner, our new nature will begin to reflect His mercy and we will respond by showing mercy to others.

Beatitudes – How We Share Christ Matthew 5.1-10 5 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Christian VALUE SYSTEM This sermon is the BEST known teaching of Jesus which is the least understood and the least obeyed. They are basically the descriptions of what Jesus wanted His followers to be like and to do. LADDER EXAMPLE (insert picture) Overview of the Character Traits: 1. Putting Our Trust in God 2. Repentant Lifestyle of our Sins 3. Learning Humility & Gentleness 4. Righteous Living 5. Showing Mercy and Compassion 6. Growing More Holy 7. Making Peace 8. Rejoicing Through Persecutions Growing MORE Holy 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. OPENING QUESTION: WHEN and WHY is it difficult for us to live out in our actions what we believe in our heart? PURE: (Popular Interpretation) katharós, of uncertain affinity; clean (literally or figuratively):—clean, clear, pure. Clean and Pure 1. Physically 2. Levitical Sense (Ceremonial or External) 3. Ethical PURE IN HEART: World asks…How do we find happiness? FOLLOW YOUR HEART Jeremiah 17.9 -- The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? Soren Kierkegaard - “Purity of heart is to will one thing.” One scholar wrote, “the single-minded, who are free from the tyranny of a divided self.” In the ancient Greek, the phrase pure of heart has the idea of straightness, honesty, and clarity. 1. Guileless: 2. Transparent: 3. Sincerity Making Peace 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons [a] of God. First Thought: Ones who break up the fights between two parties. Not conflict, but peace…. 1 Peter 3.11 -- let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. Hebrews 12.14 -- Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. Romans 12.18 - If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Peacemakers: This does not describe those who live in peace, but those who actually bring about peace, overcoming evil with good. One way we accomplish this is through spreading the gospel, because God has entrusted to us the ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18). 2 Corinthians 5.17-21 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. [b] The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; And this is Evangelism: We make peace between man and the God whom they have rejected and offended. Who are the peacemakers? 1. One who is bringing good into others' lives 2. One who is bringing men to God 3. Does not mean an easy-going person. Someone to RUN OVER. 4. One who actively sets out to make PEACE. 5. The peacemaker is one who points men to God, that they might surrender to God and have peace. SUMMARY: Be the ONE LIFE that makes PEACE on the Earth for God.

Our society is quick to judge. We immediately label someone or some situation with a tag that sticks. Jesus commands us not to judge. We can't see people's motives nor the whole story. Dr. John reminds us of Jesus' words that it is hard to see with a log in our eye! Most of all, in place of judgement, we are to extend mercy. Just like God does with us.A Firm Grip on the Gospel: Anyone who has read the four Gospels is struck by how different they are. These accounts focus on the life and death of Jesus, yet they each have a particular theme and emphasis. In this four-week series, Dr. John Neufeld points us to the Gospel of Luke and traces the intent of the only Gentile writer of a New Testament book.

Whatever you are today it is because of the mercy of God. It's not by your strength or abilities. It's not because you are more qualified than others. It's because God chose to show you mercy. Since God has shown you mercy, you should show mercy to others. In this episode, I talk about mercy and how to show it.
BOOK OF JUDE: Part 3 – Showing Mercy to Those Who Wander // Pastor Christian BonhamSince the Fall of mankind (Genesis 3) our world has been full of spiritual relativism and a battle for what's true. In the Book of Jude, Jude tells readers as worshippers of the One True God they should contend for the faith amidst the rising sin and spiritual apostasy. It's not a call to fight, however, but a call to Lordship and living their lives surrendered to Jesus. Today we close the series by looking at how to walk with those who have wandered from the faith misled by the false teachings.Text: Jude 20-25THIS SERMON CAN BE VIEWED ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqmshgH0JLqxzRXiEr2QktQ Worship Service of Bethany Baptist Church (Wendell, NC/Raleigh, NC) September 3, 2023Worship Service of Bethany Baptist Church (Wendell, NC/Raleigh, NC) Come visit us in person! “They answered Joshua, “Because it was told to your servants for a certainty that the Lord your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you—so we feared greatly for our lives because of you and did this thing. And now, behold, we are in your hand. Whatever seems good and right in your sight to do to us, do it.” So he did this to them and delivered them out of the hand of the people of Israel, and they did not kill them. But Joshua made them that day cutters of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the Lord…” - Joshua 9:24-27 ESV

We seem so unfamiliar with extending mercy to others. We seem more concerned about having our opinions heard than we are extending mercy to others. Jesus says in Matthew 5:7 that to actually be a kingdom citizen, to actually have a transformed heart, to actually demonstrate you are a true believer is to show mercy to others out of a heart of love and compassion.Visit our website:walkingworthypodcast.com
