The 5 Am ClubThe 5 Am Club Full Chapter Brief The 5 AM Club by Robin Sharma is a life-changing book that shows you how to make the most of your mornings and transform your life. It introduces the concept of the 5 AM Club and provides a step-by-step guide to creating a morning routine that can help you improve your mindset, heartset, healthset, and soulset. With practical advice, inspiring stories, and powerful tools, this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to unlock their full potential and achieve their biggest goals. Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. Today we will unlock the book The 5 AM Club by Robin Sharma. In today's Bookey, we will follow the footsteps of three people. The first one is a frustrated entrepreneur who was about to go bankrupt and even commit suicide. The second one is an artist who was struggling to find ways to boost his creativity and enhance his abilities to create remarkable art pieces that would leave a lasting impression in his field. Both of them took part in a personal optimization conference addressed by a legendary business guru, the Spellbinder, where they met a billionaire who disguised himself as a poor man and shared his success story with the two. The billionaire is called Stone Riley. He invited the entrepreneur and the artist to his beach house in Mauritius to teach them the secrets of a world-class morning routine, which is also his key to success. The only requirement was that they should meet at 5 AM the next morning. The next morning, a chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce collected them and delivered them to a hangar containing a sleek, ivory-colored private jet, which bore the logo: “5AC.” What did it mean? The logo stood for “The 5 AM Club.” Then they set off on a journey to Mauritius. Over the next few days, the billionaire explained to them how getting up at five AM was the way he had learned to escape mediocrity and achieve greatness. Through the billionaire's teachings, the two students gained a new outlook on life and the potential to transform everything for the better. The author Robin Sharma presents the information through a fictional story, following the journey of three characters who are seeking personal and professional success. This storytelling approach allows us to engage with the book in a more relatable and memorable way, as they follow the characters' struggles and triumphs. Next, why not join them on their journey? We will pick out the three important key points in this book that can lead you into the 5 AM Club. In Part One, we will discuss the four interior empires, which include Mindset, Heartset, Healthset and Soulset. In Part Two, we will explore the 20/20/20 formula, which can be used to take advantage of the first hour of the day. In Part Three, we will talk about the essentialness of sleep and the pre-sleeping ritual, which can help us gain better sleep.

Self-education is the foundation of all meaningful transformation. If there has been one game-changing practice in my own life that has lifted me from someone who grew up in a little town and was not considered worthy of any real success by some around me to a man who has been blessed to be of service to many, it has been this:I have invested dramatically—for years—on the improvement of my Mindset, Heartset, Healthset and Soulset along with educating myself on how the great masters of business, creativity and impact have done it.I'd fill my home with books, spend many hours listening to audios and attend conferences to hear the speakers and meet others on the path to personal optimization and professional acceleration. This commitment was an act that changed my own life.No investment delivers a greater return than investing in making yourself a better, wiser, stronger, more creative and amazing you.If you'd like me to become YOUR mentor so I help you make 2023 the best year of your life yet, I'd be happy to be of service to your greatness. Truly. I've handcrafted an absolutely world-class one year mentoring program that will help you get fitter, happier, stronger and ultra successful this New Year. Yet please do recall that while victims are frightened by change, leaders grow inspired by it.We express the fullness of our humanness and embrace our primal greatness only when we do our daily work to develop our thinking, purify our emotions, strengthen our vitality and magnify our spirituality. Prayer, meditation, acts of goodness to neighbors, reading from wise and holy books will allow you to commune with that part of you which is undefeatable. That side of you is there. Philip McKernan is an author, speaker, filmmaker, and coach, but he's more than his titles. Dr. Laura heard Philip speak a few years ago, and the overwhelming vibration of resonance spoke to her so much that she knew she would work with him in some capacity one day - which she has. Philip talks about his Brave Soul program and why he believes the path to a happy and fulfilling life is found in the meaning we derive in life, work, our relationship with others, and the most important relationship of all — the one with oneself. Dr. Laura and Philip talk about what it means to be courageous and embrace your gift, how to step into your artistry, and how our biggest gift is sometimes right next to our deepest wound. Philip shares what it means to him to be brave, and what happens when we embody our gifts in the most meaningful way possible. What You'll Hear In This Episode: Dr. Laura talks about her own experience seeing Philip speak in a crowd of 3,000 and how it changed the course of her life. Philip talks about what bravery and courage mean to him, and how he acts as a facilitator for others to step into their own courage. This work isn't easy, and Philip has his share of people feeling resistance and strong emotions towards him, as they reveal some hard truths that may require them to take a deep look at their life. How Philp has learned to sit in the big emotions of others and hold space for them. Philip acts as a mirror so others can do the work and have tremendous breakthroughs. He shows up in a way that allows others to be unpolished and vulnerable. Philip opens up about his own challenges and vulnerabilities as someone who can channel and facilitate. How we can doubt our "gifts" and how those who often most doubt our gifts are the ones that are closest to us. As we lean into our gifts, it can remind others that they are staying the same. How talents are different than gift. We can often protect ourselves to the point where we die with the greatest expression of our artistry still left in our souls. Quotes: “I'm the father you didn't have. I'm the job you should have taken. I'm the life you aren't living.” — Philip “I believe we are all artists in a very deep way.” — Philip “I think deeply all of us want some type of radical simplicity in our lives.” — Philip “Most of us have families that want us to be happy. But most of us have families that don't want us to change.” - Philip “Sometimes the way I play with discovering my gift is by not asking those closest to me, but by asking other people who are further from my inner circle and may simply brush up against me in the work that I do in the world.” — Dr. Laura “Gifts always have an element of impact to them in it.” — Philip “I don't think you can fail when you lean into your gift.” — Philip Take Dr. Laura's Free Quiz! — What's your Divine Feminine Sovereign Style? He helps people get clear on who they are and where they need to go. He helps them transition in their personal and professional lives so people feel aligned in all areas of life. Philip believes who and what we do “off the ice” has a huge impact on our results “on the ice.” His groundbreaking Team Deepening™ work with organizations gives teams a refreshing way to connect and build real and collective resilience. What separates Philip from a lot of coaches, speakers, and gurus is originality. He brings new conversations to the table and spends an obscene amount of time thinking and challenging the status quo, instead of simply repackaging business & life-hacking strategies. Philip McKernan is a philosopher, a modern-day philosopher of the human experience. His pioneering philosophy around SoulSet™ equips and empowers people to uncover their gifts and impact the world. With a knack for getting into all sorts of scenarios — he's caddied in golf for the President of Ireland, been chased and nearly killed by a bull elephant in Nigeria. and made wine in Australia. He has traveled to 80 countries around the globe, built an orphanage in Peru, written five books despite being dyslexic, and created his first documentary film called Give & Grow. The film explores how the gift of giving makes us feel more worthy and alive. It also explores the science behind the impact of giving on our emotional well-being, our mental health, our physiology, and our businesses. Philip believes the path to a happy and fulfilling life is found through the meaning we derive in life through the WORK we do, our relationship with OTHERS, and the most important relationship of all, the one with one's SELF.

Intro: Welcome to the podcast Coronavirus Crisis: Carpe Diem!, where by God's grace, you and I rise up and embrace the possibilities and opportunities for spiritual and psychological growth in this time of crisis, all grounded in a Catholic worldview. We are going beyond mere resilience, to rising up to the challenges of this pandemic and becoming even healthier in the natural and the spiritual realms than we were before. I'm clinical psychologist Peter Malinoski and I am here with you, to be your host and guide. This podcast is part of Souls and Hearts, our online outreach at soulsandhearts.com, which is all about shoring up our natural foundation for the spiritual life, all about overcoming psychological obstacles to being loved and to loving. Thank you for being here with me. This is episode 38, released on October 19, 2020 and it is titled: Seeing the signs of shame in yourself and others. We are going to understand much more deeply the nature of shame, where shame comes from and how it manifests itself inside of us, and how it is expressed. We are focusing today on learning more about shame and recognizing it -- recognizing it in ourselves and in others, becoming better able to detect it. Remember parts of the dynamics of shame include shame remaining hidden, unobserved, unrecognized for what it is. Shame is tricky, it's slippery, it loves to camouflage itself. We are in a series of episodes about shame. In future episodes we will get to how shame affects our spiritual lives and we will also focus on how to heal from shame, how to break out of the vicious shame cycles in which we find ourselves spinning. So Let's start by Circling back -- review of shame from the last session and then adding some real depth and nuance as we review and expand upon what we covered in the last episode, Episode 37. Shame is: The primary problem we have in the natural realm That gives birth to so many secondary problems -- we tend to focus on the secondary problems, the problems that are further downstream -- so we are not getting to the root. Drawing heavily from Kathy Steele, Suzette Boon, and Otto van Der Hart -- trauma clinicians and researchers who have worked with real clinical population, real people, not just academicians. Also drawing from Richard Schwartz and Regina Goulding -- Mosaic Mind. Be open to really learning about this this can be challenging take what suits you -- can slow way down. If this is really activating for you, consider psychotherapy -- Souls and Hearts course on how to choose a therapist. If you can resolve your dysfunctional shame -- have a deep sense of being lovable and loved, by God, others and yourself, you've solved most of your psychological issues on the natural level. Shame has five dimensions: shame is a primary emotion, shame is a bodily reaction, shame is a signal to us, shame is an internal self-judgement, and shame is an action -- a verb (review). Adding today behavioral expression of shame These behavioral expressions of shame are not shame itself, but they are intimately linked with shame and some of the best indicators of unrecognized shame. Shame is more than most people assume. We tend to have very limited, very primitive understandings of shame -- very unidimensional. Let's review the five dimensions of shame. Shame is a primary emotion -- heartset Primary emotions are those that we feel first, as a first response to a situation. They are unthinking, instinctive, emotions that rise up spontaneously More nuanced. Just because you're not feeling shame in the moment does not mean that it's not there. Consider how a wave of anger feels. You feel normal, fine, then something happens and there is this intense anger or even rage, and then it passes, the anger goes away again. That how we typically think of these emotional experience. That how we make sense of them. But that's not how it is. That is a dangerous illusion. A falsehood. A pipe dream. The anger didn't just come and go, just like that. And you know this at some level, because sometimes you ask yourself -- why am I so angry about that little thing, why did something so minor just set me off? The emotional reaction is disproportionate to the trivial event. A wave of shame -- feels like it wasn't there, and then something happened, like a negative review from your boss it was there in all its intensity and you're just trying to hold it together through the rest of your performance review, and then the shame passes and you're not feeling it anymore. If I don't feel it, it's not there. Seems reasonable, right? But what if, what if that wasn't what really happened. What if the same amount of shame was within you the whole time -- it was just latent, outside of awareness. And rather than the shame coming and then going, what if it was your awareness of your shame and anger that changed. What if you at first where disconnected from your shame out of touch with it. Then your defenses were overrun and you were overwhelmed with shame, and then your defenses were able to come back online and you no longer felt the shame. What if the intense shame was there the whole time? That's a whole different model Let's say that you were disconnected from unresolved shame. A high level of shame or anger can endure within us and be intensely felt only on rare occasions when our defenses open up, when they dilate and we can see and feel the shame or anger. In other words, all that anger or shame generally resides in the unconscious. Unconscious The term was coined by the 18th-century German Romantic philosopher Friedrich Schelling -- Schelling suggests that there are two principles in us: “an unconscious, dark principle and a conscious principle” later introduced into English by the poet and essayist Samuel Taylor Coleridge 1797, who read the 18th century German idealists. Freud. Unconscious Mind is like an iceberg 10% above the water -- visible -- that is consciousness -- what we are aware of in the moment. The vast majority of the iceberg is below the water, outside awareness -- what you sense is what you get. In North America, we largely don't act as if we believe in the unconscious. I think all of us, because of original sin, the sins of others, our own personal sins, the fallen world we live in and our fallen natures -- we have deep reservoirs of shame. We know we need redemption. We can sense it at a primal level, and we have ways of distracting ourselves from that reality, from defending ourselves from that reality. Richard Schwartz on parts -- we are not just single unitary personalities Understanding Parts Separate mental systems each with their own Emotions Expressive style Abilities Roles in the system of the person God images Can think of them as modes of operating, subpersonalities, ego states, inner children Parts get forced into extreme roles due to attachment injuries, trauma to protect us from being overwhelmed e.g. with rage, despair, shame. Parts also can be trapped back in time. e.g. flashbacks -- where we are back in the shameful experience frontal cortex goes offline Leaving parietal, cortex basal ganglia, cerebellum and hippocampus Exiled Parts are the modern lepers, tax collectors and prostitutes -- the undesirables, because of the burdens they carry -- e.g. shame, anger, depression, anxiety, etc. Protector parts work hard to protect you from your exiled parts -- e.g. from being overwhelmed. So certain parts of us -- parts of us that are exiled -- carry the shame. And our internal systems get organized to hide our shame in the unconscious, to distance ourselves from shame so that we won't be overwhelmed by it and so we can continue to function If we didn't have a way to manage the shame it would continually overwhelm us. Or the rage or despair or the fear. Shame as a judgment -- a judgment of who I am. a critical perspective of myself, a very negative attitude toward myself. -- mindset A judgement about who I really am from the perspective of a critical, rejecting other. I look at myself through the eyes of critical, angry or disappointed other, often my mom or dad, daycare worker, teacher or other caregiver. But we have internalized it. We've take it inside. Now a part of us plays the role of the external critical person This parts of me repeat messages I've picked up from important others: I am a burden. I am too needy, too dependent, I bring other people down and make them suffer I don't deserve attention and care. Alcohol, TV and the newspaper are more important than me. May no longer the case, no longer accurate. Anachronistic, no longer applies. No longer in second grade. But these judgments are held by the judging parts of me that are trying to protect me from my own shame, from the shame-bearing parts carry the emotional aspects of shame -- a shame-filled heartset, but also the cognitive aspects of shame -- a shame-filled mindset. And because the emotional and cognitive dimension of shame are so threatening, the parts are banished, they are driven out of awareness into exile in the unconscious. But they are not gone. They are just silenced for the moment. Shame is a bodily reaction -- automatic, involuntary bodily response: Bodyset Charles Darwin 1872 published a book "The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals" Darwin described shame the following bodily reactions: blushing (vasodilation in face), confusion of mind, downward cast eyes, slack posture, and lowered head -- Crying -- which can exacerbate shame When exiled parts that are burden with shame break through into conscious awareness, they can overwhelm us with their distress that then takes over our bodies. This is like in the Pixar movie Inside Out when the very thin purple Fear character takes over the control panel and dominates everything in the main character Riley. Window of tolerance the zone of arousal in which a person is able to function most effectively -- when we are feeling intense shame, we get yanked out this window of tolerance. Hyperarousal -- this is where our sympathetic nervous system revs us up, gets into fight or flight mode in response to shame Heart starts racing Breathing quickens Pupils dilate Blood rushes to arms and legs Face can flush red Get ready to defend ourselves or attack or run away Hypoarousal, when the parasympathetic nervous system shuts us down -- freeze response, like a deer in the headlights We disengage socially Want to disappear, hide, camouflage ourselves. Shut down. Numb out. Dissociate Lowering of the head Breaking off eye contact Tightening up of muscles, curling up in a ball (spine) -- hunching to protect vital organs. Making one's body smaller, less visible Feeling like ice water in the veins, cold freezing sensation Fluttering in belly. These bodily reactions are not under voluntary control. Ever tried not to blush? Didn't it just make it worse when you couldn't stop it? Even though you wanted to play it cool. you just kept getting redder and redder, which led to a more intense shame response. Shame is a signal. Functions of Shame This often gets missed. The upside of shame. Why it exists. Shame is a signal that there is a lack of attunement or an even more serious threat in one or more of our important relationships. It has important function Shame functions as a "social threat detector" that signals us to modify or avoid behaviors that will cause us to be rejected by those we need. Then the shame response to the shame signal occurs. Shame signal leads to the shame response -- the shame response inhibits emotions, thoughts, sensations, beliefs or behaviors that are perceived as unacceptable to powerful others who we need. So Shame is a survival mechanism. It helps save us from potential terrible consequences. Inhibition -- family in church -- lots of little kids, all perfectly dressed, all perfectly behaved, parents beaming in response to getting complements about their little angels, so well behaved. Parents may have put the fear of God into the children to keep them still. Inhibitory function of shame -- not wanting to displease God, not wanting to displease the parents who may have parts that are very overinvested in the public impressions their family makes on the parish community. Shame as action -- a verb -- “shaming” is an action that is intended to cause someone else to feel inadequate, worthless, unlovable, a loser, etc. for being or doing something that the shamer feels is wrong or undesirable. It is a quick way to control another person, especially one in a dependent positions It is a quick way for us to control ourselves. Part of us is forced into the role of shamer to anticipate consequences. E.g. rambunctious boy on Saturday morning -- hung over mother cussing him out from the top of the stairs to shut up and let her sleep. If a part of that body takes on the shaming function and whenever he starts getting boisterous, tells him to shut up and be good and stop being such a noisy pain in the rear end, he can save himself the verbal backlash and maybe even worse from his alcoholic mom. It's a way of managing an extremely difficult situation. Qualities of shame Shame is hidden. Hidden from others, hidden from God, often hidden from the therapist, hidden from self. Hidden in the unconcious, carried by our exiled parts, which are like lepers. Not allowed into the community for fear of a contagion of shame, shame taking over. Disappear, hide, camouflage Shame inhibits positive emotions How shame is expressed -- going into Behavioral Expressions of Shame What to look for in yourself and others -- clues that shame is lurking, hidden, even if you don't feel it. We may need to infer it. Therapists particularly need to know this information. So much shame is missed by therapists -- lots of reasons for that. Shame is hard to measure -- the more important a phenomenon is, the harder it is to quantify, to measure. 2017 Journal of Child and Family Studies A New Measure of the Expression of Shame: The Shame Code Canadian researchers Kalee De France, Dianna Lanteigne, Jenny Glozman & Tom Hollenstein shame has predominantly been measured by self-report questionnaires, which typically capture trait shame or shame proneness unable to capture the experience of shame as it occurs and is observed by others Shame does not have a canonical facial expression, however, some facial and behavioral expressions that may be indicative of the experience of shame have been identified. shrunken or compressed posture that includes body tension, dropped shoulders, or lowered head in a manner akin to a “hang-dog” look These submissive displays can be seen as social signals of appeasement, and attempts to reduce social conflict or scrutiny they tend to evoke cooperative behavior from others, and are associated with less punitive responses shame can be identified by tension in the facial muscles turning down the corners of their mouth -- frowning tucking their lower lip between their teeth pursed lips smiling while experiencing shame may not appear genuine (i.e., non-Duchenne smile) indicating a false expression of positivity the key difference between this “real” happy smile and a “fake” happy smile lies in the orbicularis oculi – muscles that wrap around the eyes. All smiles require a contraction of the zygomatic major muscles, the muscles that lift the corners of the mouth. A real smile, a Duchenne smile adds the eyes. The skin around the eyes wrinkles into crows' feet by the tightening of the orbicularis oculi muscles. embarrassed smile, a smile accompanied by gaze aversion, or a nervous smile another appeasement behavior, where the individual experiencing shame attempts to placate the observer and avoid judgment or punitive behavior. gaze aversion or hiding one's face -- attempt to hide. not seeking to contest resources or escalate conflict Speech Patterns verbal uncertainty -- hemming, hawing such as stammering long pauses Going silent tendency to withdraw, such as disengaging from the emotional trigger Freezing halting behavior or remaining rigidly still distracting oneself through fidgeting “manipulations of one's own body parts or objects, such actions being peripheral or non-central to ongoing events or tasks” (Mehravian & Friedman, 2006, p. 406) Strategies for coping with shame Nathanson (1992, 1997) Four defensive scripts for avoiding shame: Attack Self, Attack others, Isolate self, Avoid inner experience Attack self -- part of you accepts the mindset of shame, the beliefs -- I am inadequate, I am a loser, stupid, incompetent, fat -- it's safer to turn the anger and disgust inward. When you mix anger and disgust you get contempt, which is the most corrosive emotion in relationship, including our relationship with ourselves. If you want to ruin a relationship, there is nothing better than a contemptuous attitude In attacking the self, the shame may not be felt at all -- rather it's just assumed that I am worthless, no good, evil -- not even possible to say "I feel ashamed" -- there is just the attack on the shame-bearing part. Attacking others first -- this one is often counterintuitive. Stay with me here. This is when one of your protector parts, in order to shield you from your own shame, attacks another person. You are not the problem -- the other person is. Anger and disgust are directed away from the self toward blaming and shaming another person in order to salvage your own sense of self-worth. You externalize the shame, you project it on someone else. Wants you to not know about the underlying shame -- and doesn't want anyone else to see your shame either. If the other person is feeling the shame, is getting overwhelmed by their own shame, then the shame is there and not in you. The other person is inferior and you are superior -- the other person has the shame problem not you. And these shaming parts are driven by shame that they are totally unaware of. Lot of marital conflict stems from shame and shaming. Lots of it. The primary problem. Number one issue in aggressive, pushing people who cut others down -- bullies, intimidators, tough guys, gaslighters, manipulators -- it's a part of a person who is desperately trying to ward off shame. . That doesn't make it all right. That doesn't make it not sinful. Isolate from others part of you accepts the message of shame and believes it. And feels terrible and hides. No desire to be exposed, to be vulnerable to more ridicule, more shaming. Just hiding. Like Adam and Eve in Genesis 3, after eating the forbidden fruit. Lots of anxiety and fear. See how anxiety and fear are secondary emotions to the shame? They flow from the shame. So many problematic emotions have shame at their root, at their core, but shame is so tricky, the other emotions seem to be the problem. Avoid social situation Limit relational interactions Withdraw Look at others with dread. Avoid inner experiences Denial Dissociation -- disconnection Numbing Depersonalization or derealization Attempts to distract self -- TV, movies, alcohol, sex, binge eating, obsessions, hyperactivity, dissociation, manic episodes, incessant humor or joking, changing the subject when the conversation pulls for looking inward, focusing on the other person, excessive caregiving with no self-care, compulsive do-gooding also spiritual bypassing -- a flight into spiritual practices to avoid dealing with your inner experiences -- lots of litanies and prayer cards and holy hours and lectio divina, but with a driven quality to it, a rigidity, a nearly exclusive outward focus. Little or no awareness of shame, or shameful actions, reactions, faults or negative characteristics. We will get to working with shame -- much more constructively, how do we do that? It's coming. I will be giving you strategies for working with shame in upcoming podcasts. Can't rush it. There's often a strong impulse to rush through working with shame. We'll also get into the spiritual impact of shame. Soulset For example, if you have a part who feels unloved and unlovable -- how do you think that part would understand God? Would it see God as loving and caring if it has been shut off from love? What about your parts that have been shamed by important others and by other parts of you? How would they see God? How does your internal critic, you know that voice that has running commentary about your faults and failings, exacerbating shame -- how does that part see God? What God images do these parts have? How Satan uses your shame against you? Remember, grace perfects nature, and it makes sense for Satan to attack at the weak points in your natural foundation. We will get into those issues as well as the relationship between shame and pride. I’ve talked a lot about taking this time as an opportunity for growth. Whether that’s personal growth by way of self-development or more practical pursuits like work and home-life.I want to take this a little further today and provide you with some information that has not only inspired me but also helps in getting truly practical about using this time as an opportunity. I have a lot of mentors. Most of them I don’t know personally and may never meet but they inspire me nonetheless. When I’m feeling stuck about life or work, I am usually very unproductive. I feel stressed and go into a bit of ‘woe is me’ with everything that applies to my life. When this happens, I know that it’s because I haven’t been actively growing. I haven’t been working on my personal journey, what matters to me, what feeds my soul and what helps me grow.At times like these, I stop and I start learning. This recently happened to me and so I found myself absorbing learning from one of my favourites, Jay Shetty through his podcast. He had an interview there with one of my mentors, Robin Sharma. Robin was the catalyst to get me into coaching. I was astounded at how much our thinking was alike - even before I chose to go down the coaching path. I discovered Robin on my healing journey from depression. He is an author and leadership coach, seriously incredible and can articulate so beautifully, what I share more practically within my practice with clients.Whilst listening to this show, they talked about mindset and how this seems to be the path that everyone is speaking about at the moment. Now I lead with this too in my work but the ‘sets’ are woven into my work with clients. And that’s what I want to talk about today.Your Heartset, your Healthset, your Mindset and your Soulset - from Robin Sharma’s book, The 5am Club. I hope that it inspires you as much as it has me.https://www.franklycoaching.comhttps://www.bensound.com
For those who have been doing the early morning work to fortify their 4 Interior Empires of Mindset, Heartset, Healthset and Soulset this period of deep volatility will present opportunities to create, grow, strengthen and serve.
Consciousness is what makes humans different from other species. It is the same consciousness that makes us aware about ourselves, they way we look, talk & feel. Understanding the 4 Empires as stated by Mr R. Sharma, the Mindset, Heartset, Healthset and Soulset are important components.
FEAR is a LIAR. FEAR incapacitates, handicaps, and paralyzes you. FEAR as an acronym:F alseE videnceA ppearingR eal The more you repeat an idea in your mind, whether true or false, the faster your subconscious mind will accept it as a reality. And your whole physiology will come into alignment with what it believes. Hardly ever is FEAR genetically coded within our DNA, 90% of the time it is learned behavior. Most of the time it's the result of our childhood traumas, experiences, or simply the way your mother and father parented you. FEAR send your body into one of three different responses: FIGHT, FLIGHT or FREEZE. Trypanophobia is an extreme fear of medical procedures involving injections or hypodermic needles. Hemophobia is an extreme fear of seeing blood, or getting tests or shots where blood may be involved. Cortisol: stress hormoneOxytocin: love (calm) hormone Calming Techniques:diaphragmatic breathingguided imagery tapping Phil 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength In vivo exposure refers to the direct confrontation of feared objects, activities or situations by a person under the guidance of a therapist. Your default mode is not fear, it's POWER, LOVE, and a SOUND MIND. Breaking free from the vicious fear and anxiety cycle is going to require that you reframe and recalibrate your mind. Robin Sharma's Four Interior Empires: MINDSET, HEARTSET, SOULSET, and HEALTHSET Keep calm and avoid in the midst of the wave of panic:stay away from social media and up-to-the-minutes newsknow the facts and understand the truthactively remind yourself of reason not to worrycreate a new routineoccupy your mind with relaxing hobbiesif you live alone call a friendif you are suffering from extreme fear and anxiety seek help from a specialistPsalm 27:1 - The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? Coronavirus Crisis: Carpe Diem Episode 15: The Main Sign of Psychological Health May 11, 2020 Welcome to the podcast Coronavirus Crisis: Carpe Diem, where you and I rise up and embrace the possibilities and opportunities for spiritual and psychological growth in this time of crisis, all grounded in a Catholic worldview. We are going beyond mere resiliency, to rising up to the challenges of this pandemic and becoming even healthier in the natural and the spiritual realms than we were before. I'm clinical psychologist Peter Malinoski your host and guide, with Souls and Hearts at soulsandhearts.com. Thank you for being here with me. This is episode 15, released on May 11, 2020 entitled The Main Sign of Psychological Health. In the previous 11 episodes, we have described and discussed the four pillars of resilience: Mindset, Heartset, Bodyset and Soulset. Now, we are getting to the really fascinating exploration of how these four pillars interact. We're diving into our internal psychological lives to see how our psychological strengths and weaknesses impact our resiliency but also how they affect our spiritual lives. Because as a Catholic psychologist, I'm really focused on how psychological factors, our psychological structures, our psychological functioning, our entire psychological lives impact how we accept love from God and how we love God in return. It all boils down to that. If what I do as Catholic psychologist doesn't at least help others to accept God's love and to love God in return – then I am missing the point of the greatest commandment. So what is the main sign of psychological health? What is it? Take a minute and consider it. What do you think the main distinguishing characteristic of mental health is? Let's struggle with this a bit. In fact, some of you gutsier types might even be willing to stop this podcast for a few minutes and write down your ideas before you listen further. Write them down, email them to me at crisis@soulsandhearts.com or text them to me at 317.567.9594 – let me know before you continue on. Let me know what you are thinking! I want to hear from you. The answer to the question of what is the main sign of psychological health may not be what you think. Let's explore this together I promise that I will tell you what this central, essential psychological characteristic is. Not only that, today, I'm going to go over with you the disadvantages of not having that essential quality. I'm also going to give you a bunch of examples of why this particular quality matters so much and I'm also going to give you some guidance in how to overcome the deficits you have in that area. All today, all for you. So hang in there with me. We are going to start with a story, with a fable by Aesop which will help to illustrate the point. I really want this to stick with you. So it's storytime with Dr. Peter. A man who had traveled in foreign lands boasted very much, on returning to his own country, of the many wonderful and heroic feats he had performed in the different places he had visited. Among other tales, he told his listeners that when he was at Rhodes, he had leaped to such a distance that no man of his day could leap anywhere near him as to that. The traveler claimed there were in Rhodes many persons who saw his prodigious leap, and he could call them in as his witnesses. The traveler firmly believed his own tale and was adamant about his abilities, and was convincing many of his listeners. One bystander, though, interrupted him, and said: "Now, my good man, if this be all true we have no need of witnesses in Rhodes. Let's pretend that we are in Rhodes. Let us see you leap! Jump for us!" What kind of personality does the boasting traveler demonstrate in this little vignette? What do you think? Dependent, Schizoid, Obsessive, Paranoid, Self-defeating, hysterical, psychopathic, narcissistic, depressive, dissociative -- what do you think. One might argue that you can't definitively assign a personality style to an imagined character – Oh, but I can. And I am going to do it, right now. I see this character, the boasting traveler as narcissistic. Many of you may have guessed that. People with narcissistic styles work hard to maintain a very fragile sense of self-worth by getting affirmation from outside themselves. Something very important is missing – they don't have deep sense of essential goodness – that they are good because they exist and are made in the image and likeness of God. At a deep level, often in their unconscious, they feel loveless and fraudulent and are very frightened of their inner sense of inferiority, weakness, shame, and inadequacy. They work really hard to keep this out of awareness by focusing on the admiration and complements of others. But their efforts so often backfire and they wind up exactly where they don't want to be – exposed, ashamed, rejected, despised, alienated from others – like the boasting traveler in the vignette. Whenever there is psychological disorder, there are disconnects in the internal working of the person. In the case of the traveler, with his narcissism, his idealized image of himself as a great jumper is disconnected from his actual ability. He is also disconnected from his deep needs and his deep desires, which are buried in his unconscious. So where there is psychological disorder and distress there are disconnects from reality, internal psychological elements are no longer interconnected, they are split off and fractured, and we break down. We all have what I call gut-level or intuitive of what it means to be psychological healthy. You hear this in casual language. When we describe in casual language someone who is nosediving in his psychological functioning, we say that “He is breaking down.” “He is falling apart.” He is losing it. On the other hand, Someone we see as psychologically well-adjusted – we say that person has got it all together. He has his act together. He has all his ducks in a row. This brings us back to the question: What is the main sign of psychological health? The main sign of psychological health is Integration. The main sign of psychological health is internal integration. Integration. Having it all together. So let's go deeper into that – what does being integrated look like? It means accepting things in us that we might not like. We're not endorsing them or embracing them, but we accept that they exists in us. Being integrated means that you are aware and accept our emotions, even the ones we don't like. For example anger and hatred. Anger at our parents, our spouses, our children, our God. Or deep disappointment. Knowing our heartset. Being integrated means that you are aware and accept our thoughts, even the ones we don't like. Not dwelling on them. Knowing our mindset Being integrated means that you are aware and accept our attitudes toward ourselves, even the ones we don't like. E.g. that we are worthless, or that we are no good, or that we are unlovable. I totally get why we suppress or repress Being integrated means that you are aware and accept our impulses, even the ones we don't like E.g. impulses toward violence. Sexual impulses. Impulses toward blasphemy. We tend to shut these down, get rid of them, but we are just pushing them into the unconscious. Being integrated means that you are aware and accept our body sensations, even the ones we don't like. Sexual responses – I'm not physically attracted to that person Percentage that is suppressed is a measure of how much disorder there is. Becoming integrated: taking disowned, rejected, unconscious, or conflicted aspects of the self and making them part of a cohesive sense of selfreducing the use of rigid coping mechanisms increase spontaneity and flexibility and creativityIt is the process of making whole. Christ was perfectly integrated. So was our Blessed Mother. Integration is a critical part of their perfection. Saints. Wretchedness. Relying on God's mercy. We can be with ourselves and in ourselves as we are. Accepting ourselves as we are, even if other in our past did not. If the boasting traveler could accept himself as he is, he wouldn't have to puff himself up and put himself at the mercy of the approval of the crowds. Every personality disorder reflects a lack of integration. The way that the person's system keeps the integration from happening changes from disorder to disorder. One of the ways to differential among personality styles is to look at the defense mechanisms. These are the coping strategies that people use to keep unpleasant realities out of awareness. Part of us is saying like Jack Nicholson to Tom Cruise in “A Few Good Men” You can't handle the truth! We want to bring together of the emotional aspects, the thoughts, the desires, the body sensations, the attitudes, impulses, desire, all the psychological and physiological systems within a person to work in harmony, under the intellect in the will. St. Thomas Aquinas referred to this as governing the passions. That is integration. You can't govern a passion by trying to banish it out of conscious awareness. An integrated man knows who he is. An integrated woman knows who she is. Many reasons why we are not integrated. Happened with the fall – psychological disorder came along with the rest of the disorder in the natural realm. What it means to be not integrated. Exercise: Reflecting on a quality you really hate in someone else. Finger pointing 3 pointing back. Action item: Register for the Resilient Catholics: Carpe Diem! Community here.
Coronavirus Crisis: Carpe Diem Episode 14: Soulset: The core of usMay 4, 2020Screwtape letters: From the experienced demon Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood – Screwtape is teaching Wormwood the ins and outs of tempting men, trying to drag their souls to hell. When Screwtape refers to the Enemy he means God. “Be not deceived, Wormwood, our cause is never more in jeopardy than when a human, no longer desiring but still intending to do our Enemy's will, looks round upon a universe in which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys.Cue musicWelcome to the podcast Coronavirus Crisis: Carpe Diem, where you and I rise up and embrace the possibilities and opportunities for spiritual and psychological growth in this time of crisis, all grounded in a Catholic worldview. I'm clinical psychologist Peter Malinoski with Souls and Hearts at soulsandhearts.com. Thank you for being here with me. Soul CCC: The spiritual principle of human beings. The soul is the subject of human consciousness and freedom; soul and body together form one unique human nature. Each human soul is individual and immortal, immediately created by God. Soulset. Soulset is essentially our attitude of soul, how we orient our governing spiritual principle. Soulset is the core of a man or woman or child. It can and does operate independently of mindset and heartset, both of which are bound up in the body. Our soulset reflects how we see God, and how we see ourselves in relationship with God, how we see God viewing us. Consider the man that Screwtape was describing. A man who has lost his desire for God, who experiences God as vanished, gone, who feels forsaken, alone. Heartset. Mindset. Bodyset curling up. But he still intends to do the will of God. In spite of all that his wounded, heart is telling him, all that his confused mind is telling him, all that his aching body is telling him, he still – that man still intends to do the will of God. That is an admirable man. The way I'm describing soulset includes our conscience, The council's Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World (Gaudium et Spes) defines conscience "as man's most secret core, and his sanctuary. There he is alone with God, whose voice echoes in his depths. By conscience, in a wonderful way, that law is made known which is fulfilled in the love of God and one's neighbor" (16). And I love the idealism and I believe every word of this definition. It was extremely helpful to me when I was experiencing an existential crisis at age 22. This paragraph was precious to me, in its idealism and its beauty and the way it shows the dignity of men and women and children. But. Here's the But. but I'm a psychologist, I work with people in messy, painful situations with raw emotions and excruciating, unresolved experiences. I don't have the luxury of just retreating and staying in the realm of ideas like philosophers or theologians can. I'm down here in the trenches often with people who are desperate and frantic, whose lives are chaotic, and you know what? They hardly experience the voice of a loving God echoing in their depths. They are not experiencing, in this wonderful way that Vatican II describes, God's law being fulfilled in the love of God and neighbor. In their distress, they do not seek out a philosopher or a theologian. Who does that? Would you do that? When you are suffering, do you go to internet or pick up the yellow pages and look up philosophers and theologians in your area? Why not? Because we need to nourish and heal not only the mind, but the heart, and the body and the soul, the whole person. In an integrated way. When people are suffering this can just seem like words words words, blah blah blah, it just doesn't seem to stick. Haven't all of you experienced that? How many sermons have you heard that might be speaking to your mind, but not the rest of you? This intellectualized sermons that speak not to your heart, not to your body. Or it can happen the opposite way – a charismatic sermon that speaks to the heart, it really pulls on the heartstrings but it speaks to the heart only, not the mind or soul or body. How many of you have heard really emotionally moving sermons that were quite confusing or unclear or even heretical in their actual content. And let's also just say it like it is. Some sermons don't seem to move the heart or the mind or the body or the soul at all. Just meh. Dry. Boring. Distant. And then they can start to feel irrelevant, unattuned. It's amazing how mediocre some sermons really can be. It's not that they are evil or anything. They just aren't very human. Dietrich von Hildebrand:God has called us to become new men in Christ…This new life is not destined merely to repose as a secret in the hidden depths of our souls; rather it should work out in a transformation of our entire personality. Our entire personality. All facets of our psychic life. And I am going to go farther than that statement. Not just our entire personality but our entire personhood, all of us. Every aspect of us. That's what we do here. Souls and Hearts. Alice von Hildebrand: How difficult it is for us fallen men to will what God wills, for as much as we believe we love God, we are tempted to love our own will even more. Our soulset very much depends on our level of security in our relationship with God. Let's be clear. Soulset does not have to be about feelings. It's not driven my emotional states. For example, in a period of desolation, one can have a very open soul, and be growing spiritually by leaps and bounds, very open to the working of the Holy Spirit – but have no consoling feelings and few or no great spiritual insights. So it can operate very independently from mindset as well. Importance of integration of heart, soul, mind, body.
If you are crunched for time from a busy schedule with your kids/ work/ life; or if you have good intentions of trying to exercise, meditate and/or journal but your day just seems to slip away, then this episode is for you. In fact, the impacts of following the 20-20-20 formula, as outlined in Robin Sharma's book “The 5am Club”, will provide you with a condensed solid morning routine that is absolutely essential if you want to become a top performer. Imagine living happier each day because you have a body that you're more proud of, your stress levels never quite build up to that point where you're losing it, and your thoughts are more focused and deliberated. It all sounds too good to be true but trust me it is not. It only requires one small sacrifice and that is to wake up at 5am. At this time of the day, you knock our your 20-20-20 routine in the morning when there is no one to distract you. Implementing this knowledge has changed my life for the better in so many ways and I just can't help but to spread the good word. In fact, this knowledge Robin shares in his book motivated me to create this new podcast series on self-improvement. And in this episode, I talk about my experiences preforming this 20-20-20 formula and little tips and tricks I learned along the way either through my failures or my ground breaking insights I discovered. I pour my heart into this episode. I hope you too can start setting your alarm for 5am each day and getting after it! Coronavirus Crisis: Carpe DiemTitle: Your Catholic Body and this Crisis: Bodyset Episode 10: April 20, 2020Welcome to the podcast Coronavirus Crisis: Carpe Diem. Seize the day! This twice-weekly podcast helps us rise up and embrace the possibilities and opportunities for spiritual and psychological growth in this time of crisis, all grounded in a Catholic worldview. I'm clinical psychologist Peter Malinoski with Souls and Hearts at soulsandhearts.com. It is great to be here with you. This is Episode 10 and its April 20, 2020, entitled Your Catholic Body and this Crisis: Bodyset. Today we are focusing on the body. Your Catholic body. Does that sound weird to you? That your body is Catholic? I bet it does. Why? Is your body not Catholic? We're going to get ito all at that body stuff in today's episode.[cue music]ReviewWe're in the middle of a program about building resilience in this crisis, so that we are ready to take advantage of the opportunities God is giving us to grow, to grow spiritually of course, but also to grow psychologically, to grow in faith, but also to grow in our human formation, in the natural realms. Episode 4 – the Four Pillars of Resilience Mindset, Heartset, Bodyset, Soulset. That episode introduced the four major domains, the four major parts of us. Mind, Heart, Body, Soul. We need these four areas of our lives ordered so that we can be resilient and adapt well in a crisis. If you're new to the podcast, you can listen to each episode in its own, it can stand alone, but remember they all hang together into a program to strengthen your resilience to live out our duties of state, to live our your vocation. So if you have the time and interest, it's great to go back to episode 4 and work your way up to this one. In Episodes 5 and 6 we got into mindset. Our mindset is the position of our intellect, and how we habitually apply reason to our situation, to our experiences. In Episode 7 we moved into heartset. Our heartset consists of the dispositions or the orientation of our heart, the emotional and intuitive ways of our heart. We discussed the huge mistake of neglecting our emotions, the costs of that neglect, and how to get in touch with our emotions again. In Episode 8 we had a brief detour and we discussed reconciling psychology and Catholicism, and I shared the story of how I got into the field of psychology. In Episode 9 we got back into heartset, with another huge issue, the issue of being overwhelmed by emotion, and how to prevent that and with that we wrapped up our initial look at heartset. So now we're continuing and we're working with a new pillar – our bodies. How do our bodies impact our capacity to cope in a crisis. That's the deep dive for us today. So just a review from Episode 4 – what is bodyset again, Dr. Peter? Glad you asked. Bodyset is how our body affects us, how our physical reactions impact us and our dispositions and inclinations. We are embodied beings, composites of body and soul. Our physical bodies have a huge impact on us. The state of our body, our relationship with our body, that's bodyset. Here is the main message: We need to listen to our bodies and respond in love to them. What does that mean, Dr. Peter? We need to listen to our bodies? Aren't we supposed to subjugate our bodies? Aren't we supposed to control them, keep them from leading us into sin? Are not our bodies the “flesh” that St. Paul condemns so often in his letters? And this business of loving our bodies? What does that mean? Sounds fishy. Sounds dangerous. So let me back up a bit and tell you how I as a psychologist got interested in the body.Episode 8 – told you a bit of my story. Pretty unimpressed with the clinical training I was getting, really uncertain about how to ground psychotherapy in a Catholic worldview. And that was so central to me. I never wanted to lead anyone astray morally or spiritually Program not helpful at all. I also was far from convinced that psychotherapy was really effective. So I clinically I got into health and rehabilitation psychology -- I could see the benefit in that. Pain control, helping people stop smoking, weight loss stuff. Helping people sleep better, helping people recover and cope with traumatic bodily injuries. But it was all about symptom management and habit control. And I was interested in the meaning of the bodily symptoms and the body habits that troubled people. Nailbiting Symbolic meaning. Anger. 8 months. Here is the main message: We need to listen to our bodies and respond in love to them. Why. Because our bodies are us. My body is a part of me. Because we tend to be down on the body. Lots of people hate their bodies. Body getting a bad rap – the flesh. Jansenism, Manicheanism The good part is the soul (which is composed of light) and the bad part is the body (composed of dark earth). JPII Theology of the BodyThere are many references to “the flesh” in the New Testament, especially in the letters of St. Paul. The phrase is confusing to those who think it synonymous with the physical body. While Scripture many times uses the word “flesh” to refer to the physical body, when it is preceded by the definite article, it usually means something more. Only rarely does the biblical phrase “the flesh” refer only to the physical body (e.g., John 6:53, Phil 3:2, 1 John 4:2).From Mgsr. Charles Pope: What, then, is meant by the term “the flesh”? Most plainly, it refers to the part of us that is alienated from God. It is the rebellious, unruly, and obstinate part of our inner self that is always operative. It is the part of us that does not want to be told what to do. It is stubborn, refuses correction, and does not want to have anything to do with God. It bristles at limits and rules. It recoils at anything that might cause one to be diminished or something less than the center of the universe. The flesh hates to be under authority or to yield to anything other than its own wishes and desires. It often wants something simply because it is forbidden.OK Dr. Peter, so I have the distinction between the flesh and the body. St. Paul was not condemning our physical bodies when he discusses the flesh. We need to listen to our bodies? And this business of loving our bodies? What does that mean? Sounds fishy. Sounds dangerous. Recognize what my body is saying. Poker Tells (my knee, jaw clench, high neck pain, low back pain) GI problems, headache, yoke pattern on neck and shoulders. Symbolism. Psychodynamic work. Caring for your body. Neglecting it. Not showering, fuzzy bunny slippers, shaving. Personal hygiene. Being good to the body. Somatic therapy— Diane from Maryland who emailed me. Internal Family Systems, EMDRExercise to listen in: If that body part could speak, what would it tell you. What does it want you to know. Not listening is much more dangerous. Holds experiences. Caring for the body Shoulder. Promise. Update in Wednesday email. Email me at crisis@soulsandhearts.com or call at 317.567.9594. Tell me what you came up with. And that's a wrap for today. Let's invoke our patroness and patron: Mother Mary, undoer of knots, pray for us. St. John the Baptist, pray for us.
Coronavirus Crisis: Carpe DiemThe Four Pillars of Psychological Resilience for CatholicsEpisode 4:It's the late 7th century BC in Judah. The northern kingdom of Israel has already been destroyed by the dominant Assyrians, 200 years ago. The whole northern kingdom lost forever, 10 tribes gone, utterly ruined. The little southern kingdom of Judah survived, two tribes left, Judah and Benjamin, but those two tribes are surrounded by powerful enemies, idolatrous nations running rampant. The ruling Assyrians are brutal, even by the standards of the day. But by this time Assyria is in a late-stage empire collapse. Assyrian nobles are jockeying for power and position, with palace intrigues and dirty dealing. Betrayals and internal power plays are the name of the game. Insurrections are on the rise, civil disturbances are breaking out as factions consolidate under rival warlords. The political situation was very dangerous and rapidly changing. The conquered peoples under the Assyrian's harsh rule – the Medes, Persians, Babylonians, Chaldeans, Scythians, Cimmerians became increasingly restive and hostile. These subjected nations, all much more powerful than little Judah smelled the Assyrians' weakness like blood in the water. They sharpened their swords and were bided their time for payback. And little Judah, powerless, weak, vulnerable -- little Judah finds itself riding a red tricycle in a demolition derby. And in 616 BC it happened, like rolling thunder, real rebellions break out from the simmering tensions. By 613 BC, the Babylonian army has broken free and with a vengeance is headed for Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, the biggest, most powerful city of the world. The Medes, Persians, Cimmerians and Scythians all join in with the Babylonians and pile on. It's payback time for the brutal years of subjection. The Assyrians have ruled for centuries and they are not rolling over. It was a clash of titans. The battle for Nineveh lasted months, with hand-to-hand fighting from street to street and house to house. The city finally falls in 612 BC and the victorious armies sack, loot and burn Nineveh. Now we have a huge power vacuum. The political and military situation was highly fluid, very unpredictable and really dangerous the cars crashed and burned in the derby and little Judah rode on. Cue the Prophet Habakkuk: I hear, and my body trembles, my lips quiver at the sound;rottenness enters into my bones, my steps totter beneath me.I will quietly wait for the day of trouble to come upon people who invade us So why am I sharing with you the story of the fall of Nineveh and the words of Habakkuk? Because the book of Habakkuk is all about a wild, tumultuous time, and there is great psychological wisdom in it. Those wild, unpredictable and dangerous days are also a great rea-life historical backdrop to this five episode series on resiliency. In the next five episodes I am giving you a mini-course on psychological and spiritual resilience in our own current crisis. I'm sharing with you the four pillars of internal, personal resilience in the face of crisis. These are the four critical elements that distinguish among those that thrive in hard times, from those that survive, from those that don't make it and fall into despair. I call these mindset, heartset, soulset and bodyset. I draw from the best of psychology grounded in a Catholic worldview. And I also draw in references from CS Lewis' Screwtape Letters and JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. So four pillars of resilience. What are these four pillars? Mindset, Heartset, Soulset, Bodyset. I'm going to start with the most important pillar – guess which one it is. Mindset, Heartset, Soulset and Bodyset. All of you who guessed Soulset – you're right! Soulset is Pillar 1. But were are not starting with Pillar 1. We're starting with Pillar 3. Yeah. Pillar 3 is Mindset. Because people are more familiar with mindset. Pillar Three: Mindset is essentially a frame of mind. Our mindset is the position of our intellect, and how we apply reason to our situation and our experiences. For example, a person could have a pessimistic mindset or an optimistic mindset. That person filters the perception of the world and our thinking through that mindset. More intellectual, analytical people weigh mindset much more heavily in their decision making. A classic example is Mr. Spock from the original Star Trek series, or the character of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. Here's the thing – our mindset is dynamic and changes – we can have a very positive outlook at one point in time and a very negative one at another point in time and look at the same set of circumstances. Our mindset greatly influences not only our thinking but also our behavior. If we give free rein to our behavior, it will partially flow from our mindset. It's much easier to act well when we have a good mindset. And one more thing – our mindsets can range all over in terms of their accuracy of perception and the quality of the thinking they produce. Pillar Two: Heartset. Heartset is the dispositions or the orientation of our heart, the emotional and intuitive ways of our heart. Heartset and Mindset can be in opposition. For example, if a mother can have a solid mindset to go forward with cleaning the gravel out of her son's skinned knee, while her heart breaks for him and doesn't want to cause him pain. St. Therese of Lisieux in correcting the novices under her charge felt great pain in her heart about reproving them in her heartset. But she knew in a deep and clear way that this was right and true in her mind, her mindset. Mary Magdalene was heavily influenced by her heartset in how she loved God with deep emotion.. Dr. Bones McCoy of Star Trek also was very influenced by his heartset, which was part of the conflict he had with Mr. Spock, who was moved much more by his mindset. Heartset is even more dynamic and changeable for many people than mindset. And it very much influences our mindset – makes sense right, that our emotional states influence how we think. Pillar One: Soulset. Soulset is essentially our attitude of soul. It is the disposition of our spirit, or how our souls is oriented. Our attitude of soul. It can operate independently of mindset and heartset. Our soulset reflects how we see God, and how we see ourselves in relationship with God, how we see God viewing us. Our soulset very much depends on our level of security in our relationship with God. Now here's the kicker – our soulset is also very dynamic. It changes too, often rapidly for some of us. Think about the orientation of your soul when you were in a spiritual high – how confident your soul was in those moments, the deep and abiding sense of well-being in God's grace. Now think about your soulset when you are in you are in a bad spiritual place. How your soul is closed up and has moved away. Let's go back to Habbakuk: He struggles with God concerning God's wisdom and righteousness of God's providence in current events and the safety and security of Judah. How can your ways be just or Lord? The chaos and the danger of the world around him seem unexplainable and irreconcilable with God's justice, let alone his love. Habakkuk sees violence and injustice the prophet sees all around him. God tell Habakkuk that he is going to use the Babylonians to come and destroy the evildoers. Why is God using the Babylonians to scourge Israel? An even more wicked people? How can God's holiness, omnipotence, omniscience be squared with all the suffering, pain, danger and calamity? Do any of those questions sound familiar. Have you heard yourself echoing any of them as we face the virus crisis?Habakuk is not seeing God's mercy, love, and justice in his current environment. Those things are not prominent in his mindset – he can't get there from what he is seeing. Habakkuk is also not feeling God's mercy, love, and justice. His heartset is not revealing mercy, love and justice to him. But Habakkuk believes the word of the Lord. He distrusts his own powers of mindset and his own intense heartset. He relies on his soulset. And what does he say at the end of his book? He says this: Though the fig tree do not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, 18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. 19 God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like hinds' feet, he makes me tread upon my high places. This is a great example of an ordered soulset – Habakkuk believes without seeing and without feeling what the Lord has told him. Fourth, we have bodyset. – this is basically how our body affects us, how our physical reactions impact us and our dispositions and inclinations. We are embodied beings, body and soul composites. Our physical bodies have a huge impact on us. So our bodyset is the impact of our bodily states on us. For example, if we are exhausted from a lack of sleep – that has an impact on us. Obviously our bodyset is dynamic and can change as well.So we have these four pillars. Soulset, Heartset, Mindset and Bodyset. But the funny thing about these pillars is that they are they are dynamic and can change. That is what leads us to feel a lack of stability in our lives. We'll talk more about that in our upcoming episodes. Check out the show notes for this episode if you want to review the four pillars of resiliency. In the next four episodes, we are going to go through each one, one per episode with lots of examples. Please pray for me and I will pray for you. ndigo Yoga Studio owner and teacher Genya Klaiman tells us his story growing up as a restless boy in Sakhalin island in the Russian far East and his journey through different countries where he experienced a spiritual awakening through several practices such as yoga, meditation, and breathwork. When I sat down with Genya back in February earlier this year, when this episode of the Elemental Awakening was recorded, we didn't know the degree of the challenge the world would come to face in a matter of weeks; however, the lessons he shared regarding setting routines, developing self-discipline and the importance of self-care ring more true than ever. This is the time to go inward and work on ourselves. Stay safe.

Deshalb spreche ich auch so gerne von Soulset statt Mindset, aber das erkläre ich dir genauer in der Episode...
