It all started with an email… An email to someone this morning, saying that I think my marathon running career might be over. Why would I think this? Because on the weekends, I just don't want to run upwards of 15 miles. I don't feel like putting in the time, or the effort.I said that I just like running 5-7 miles per day… which, in the immediacy, is true. However here's what I've observed:When I don't run the 15s on the weekends, the 5s during the week are much harder and less enjoyable. In essence, I have to do the 15s to love the 5s.That reflection perfectly complimented my listening to Steve Chandler's The Story of YOU on my run today. He said that if you told someone to “go have fun on the piano,” how much fun they'd have is basically tied to how much work they put in.He said this beautiful line:“The connection of work and fun is always hidden away by advertisers and other peddlers of instant pleasure".”I tend to attract clients who desire “exoneration.” This is the land of hunky dory, where everything is just blissful rainbows. That place doesn't exist- but this one does, and if you're up for 30-ish minutes of motivation and a re-introduction of, wait for it, THE GET THE F*CK OFF PODCAST (because the new name sucked anyway,) I am here for it.Monologues all around. This week, Dan Neumann is joined by Justin Thatil and Mike Dionne to discuss the topic of Agile assessments. Let's assume it: No one likes to be assessed since it tends to feel deeply uncomfortable. In this episode, these three colleagues discuss the meaning of an assessment, its purpose (that changes according to different environments), and how to conduct assessments following the Agile methodology.   Key Takeaways First: What are you trying to assess? Remember that data can be changed and looked at in many different ways (what could be a problem). The Assessments at the Scrum Master level are meant to evaluate the current state of a Team. Start with a series of questions for a health check: Do you feel you are listened to by a Team? Do you feel you have a voice? Do you feel the Team acknowledges you? Do you feel safe in that environment? If the answer is “Yes” to all four questions on a 1-5 scale, give it a 5. If the answer is affirmative to only a couple of the questions, give it a 3 or 4; if the answer is ‘Yes” to only one, put a 0 or 1. This process must be repeated, and you will realize that people answer with varying honesty over time. Over the journey, you will notice how the Team dynamics start to pick up. As a result of the assessment, the Scrum Master becomes better informed in his or her role. How is the Team performing? Velocity isn't everything! Other parts of the overall assessment can also give a good perspective regarding a Team's performance. Scrum enables problems to surface faster so that they can be addressed quicker. Velocity is only suitable for predicting how long it can take to finish a group of backlog items. Start with the Team's identity and move to the things that improve the Team's performance to reach the goal you had set. After that, find what you want to improve next. Repeat this process once a quarter. We can control the process, not necessarily the outcome. The whole organization needs to pull in the same direction. The Team needs to be willing to participate in the assessment. If the Team feels the measurement is unnecessary or useless, the assessment won't be used as a tool for improvement, and this metric won't have the value that it was expected to have. Assessments also exist for organizations. How long does it take to develop an idea? Does the organization have the ability to improve?   Mentioned in this Episode: Check this episode: “Jorgen Hesselberg on Data-Driven Continuous Improvement”.   The Tools: 5 Tools to Help You Find Courage, Creativity, and Willpower — and Inspire You to Live Life in Forward Motion, by Phil Stutz and Barry Michels   Want to Learn More or Get in Touch? This month, we are celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month with these amazing Latina leaders! In this episode, Erika Carrasco, Magda Esola, and Rebecca Hidalgo Rains join our host Teresa Palacios Smith for un cafecito and a great conversation. Listen to these leaders talk about their journeys, their superpowers, and some advice to inspire you. Meet the Leaders Erika Carrasco - REALTOR®, Intero Real Estate Services Magda Esola - Vice President of Sales & REALTOR®, Brookline Homes Rebecca Hidalgo Rains - Associate Broker, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Arizona Properties The Leaders' Journeys Magda got into real estate after seeing an ad in the paper. She was inspired by the woman who hosted the first class she went to and got her license in no time! Rebecca's father was a real estate agent and, to this day, many of her siblings are also in the real estate industry! Erika started her journey as a realtor's assistant. She had a passion for real estate and became a realtor as soon as she could. What Is Your Superpower? Magda's superpower is her authenticity. She brings joy to other people's lives and helps them see life in a different light. Rebecca's superpowers are her ability to connect with people and her tenacity - when someone tells her she can't do something, she'll show them she can. Erika's superpower is being driven. When she sets her mind on something, she keeps working until she achieves it. Challenges  One of Erika's biggest challenges is to adapt to an ever-changing market. Staying caught up with the changes over the years keeps her on her toes. Right now, Magda's challenge is staying motivated and inspired while people are coming to her and other realtors as an expert. As “givers”, realtors need to find others to fill their cup as well. Rebecca loves to be challenged! She gets excited when she faces difficulty – that's what motivates her.  Something to Inspire You to Move Forward Erika: Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, “Querer es poder,” which translates to “Where there is a will, there's a way.” Rebecca: “We are all human, we all make mistakes, and we are all in this together.” “Self care is not selfish.” “Be graceful.” Magda: The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, “Don't allow success to get to your head, and do not allow failure to get to your heart.” When you help another woman rise, we all shine. And that's how we make an impact. So let's build each other up, and shine brighter than the sun. For more great content from Teresa, connect with her on LinkedIn, join her Women Who Lead Series on Facebook, and subscribe to her YouTube channel. Summary: On this episode of Act To Live, Scott and Jaime talk about the human tendency to avoid pain and suffering. Scott introduces a book by Stutz and Micheals (The Tools, 2013) in which they term this tendency - staying in one's comfort zone. Scott discusses the book's recommendation to “Bring It On” and allow ourselves to begin to move toward, sit with, and eventually walk through pain and suffering. Jaime and Scott talk about their own experiences and struggles with this very behavior.  ACTion Event of the Week: Take a few minutes to think about something that causes you pain or suffering. As you sit, recite the affirmation “Bring It On” aloud. Notice what you think and feel as you do so. Where do we walk next? Innovation happens when you build a new narrative instead. As he says, "people will pay for a story, but they will die for a narrative". After helping to save a 20M euros venture during the dot-com boom, Guillaume went on a mission to turn every company into a source of inspiration that few can resist. Since then, he's been working with startup founders as well as senior executives of companies like Alaska Airlines, The Gates Foundation, AIG, L'Oréal, Spencer Stuart, GAP, Google, Microsoft, and the US and French governments.
