Starring William Conrad as Marshall Matt Dillon, Parley Baer as Chester, Georgie Ellis as Miss Kitty, and Howard McNear as Doc Adams... the best adult western on radio... and on television... Began in April of 1952 and ran until June of 1961 on CBS on Saturday and later Sunday evenings. Theme song was one of the most famous in all the history of radio... it was written in 10 minutes by Rex Koury! Sound effects in this series are tremendous... sometimes the sound effect is "quiet" so you can hear the boot steps echo in the streets, the gunfire richochet or the wind whistling through the center of Dodge. This is Gunsmoke... enjoy and thank you for listening!
In Breaking Walls episode 91, we finish the adult western trilogy with a focus on the period after television decimated radio’s listening audience, forever altering the broadcasting landscape. Dramatic radio’s time as America’s number one entertainment genre was over, but it was far from dead. Our story won’t conclude on that fabled date of September 30th, 1962 when radio drama supposedly ended forever. We’ll push down the trail through the 1960s, 70s, and 80s as dramatic radio continued to avoid the hangman’s noose. Show notes for Episode 12:Excerpts from Total Poker by David Spanier (1977)Published before many of the other, “classic” examples of poker journalism such as Al Alvarez' The Biggest Game in Town (discussed back in Episode 1), Anthony Holden's Big Deal, and James McManus' Positively Fifth Street, David Spanier's 1977 collection of essays titled Total Poker smartly covers a wide range of poker-related topics. On today's show, I read from a couple of different chapters in Spanier's book. First I read excerpts from a chapter titled “Morals” in which Spanier examines differences between amateur and professional poker players. I conclude with a paragraph from his chapter about poker in the movies in which Spanier makes a connection between poker and old Westerns. If you're interested, click here to read my full review of Spanier's Total Poker, which I wrote for my blog, Hard-Boiled Poker, back in the summer of 2007. “The Gambler,” Gunsmoke (originally aired October 7, 1956)Starring William Conrad (Matt Dillon), Parley Baer (Chester), Howard McNear (Doc Adams), Georgia Ellis (Kitty).
