Our culture worships thinness and equates it to health and moral virtue. People - particularly women, femmes, trans, people in larger bodies, and people with disabilities - believe that if their body doesn't match the thin ‘ideal' that they're broken and fundamentally flawed. They spend massive amounts of time and energy trying to shrink themselves even though research has proven weight loss isn't sustainable or healthy. Truth bomb: thinness does not equal health. If this has been a long-held belief of yours, you'll want to listen in for a different perspective. What you'll learn in the episode: In this episode, you'll learn:The myths that cause us to believe fat=unhealthyThe social determinants of healthHow the fat=unhealthy myths are informing your relationship to food and your bodyMentioned on the show: K.M. Now is the time for the House of Representatives to offer a second Article of Impeachment against Trump for nakedly violating the First Amendment, and for the Republicans in the Senate, who should now see the terrible mistake they made the last time they had this opportunity, to remove him from office before he can do any more damage to our nation. Amy Goodman from Democracy Now, was arrested during protests in St. Paul in 2008 and talks about how the MN police have a history of mistreating journalists. For the Book Club, Thom reads from "Notes on a Nervous Planet" by Matt Haig, and "The Inner Level: How More Equal Societies Reduce Stress, Restore Sanity and Improve Everyone's Well-Being" by Kate Pickett and Richard G. Wilkinson.
Canada is at the forefront of the climate crisis, not in the backseat. Hear from a member of the Prime Minister's Youth Council, an oil production engineer, a marine biologist and a blogger about why you should care about the climate crisis and what you can do about it today. ____“If, to cut carbon emissions, we need to limit economic growth severely in the rich countries, then it is important to know that this does not mean sacrificing improvements in the real quality of life - in the quality of life as measured by health, happiness, friendship and community life, which really matters …” - Richard G Wilkinson. ____Canada is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world: https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/news/2019/04/canadas-climate-is-warming-twice-as-fast-as-global-average.htmlCanada produces more greenhouse gases than any other G20 Nation: https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2018/11/14/canada-produces-most-greenhouse-gas-emissions-than-any-other-g20-country-new-report-says.htmlWhy we need better batteries: https://www.wired.com/story/better-battery-renewable-energy-jason-pontin/Canadian oil and gas subsidies: https://environmentaldefence.ca/report/the-elephant-in-the-room-canadas-fossil-fuel-subsidies/Crude oil and Canadian prosperity: https://business.financialpost.com/opinion/like-it-or-not-crude-oil-is-the-biggest-reason-for-canadas-prosperityWhy Canada is buying Saudi Oil: https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/why-has-canada-spent-billions-of-dollars-buying-saudi-arabian-oilHow fast fashion is destroying our planet: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/03/books/review/how-fast-fashion-is-destroying-the-planet.html___Elijah: Environmental policy advocate and member of the Prime Minister's Youth Council.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elijahdietrich/LinkedIN: https://www.linkedin.com/in/elijahdietrich/?originalSubdomain=caTess: Up and coming marine biologist.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tess.yasmine/Aspen: TD Community Leadership Scholar and blogger. Was Trump pressuring Ukraine for negative information on Joe Biden's son in exchange for military aid? The Climate Strike is happening worldwide and speculations are rising on who may be the whistle blower? ~ Book reading from "The Inner Level: How More Equal Societies Reduce Stress, Restore Sanity and Improve Everyone's Well-Being" by Kate Pickett and Richard G. Wilkinson Thom Hartmann is joined by Treger Strasberg and Rob Strasberg the founders of Humble Design, a Detroit based non-profit helping families transitioning out of homeless shelters by providing furnishings and design services. ~ Talk Media News report with Doug Christian ~ Economist, Professor Richard Wolff analyses the recent activity of the Federal Reserve and explains the potential impact and historical relevance.
Professor Richard Wolff joins Thom for a deep dive into the often misunderstood definitions critical to our understanding of the world around us- a look at economics in the broadest sense. As democratic socialism grows more popular it is necessary to look at exactly what we are talking about, to have a stronger understanding of it all. What is Capitalism? We live in a capitalistic economy, we have a more or less democratic form of government, but what is democracy? ~~~ ~~~ ~~~ Extending the conversation, Thom reads from his book, "Screwed: The Undeclared War Against the Middle Class -- And What We Can Do About It" , as well as "The Inner Level: How More Equal Societies Reduce Stress, Restore Sanity and Improve Everyone's Well-being" by Kate Pickett and Richard G. Wilkinson, "Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World" by Anand Giridharadas, as well as "Progress and Poverty In Economics: Henry George and How Growth in Real Estate Contributes to Inequality and Financial Instability" by Edward Nell.

Then Conor interviews Steve Toutonghi about his second novel Side Life -- a dazzling, intriguing, and philosophical blend of literary science fiction. It explores explores ideas of consciousness and parallel universes.
