I rolled my eyes on Friday as New Zealand youth became the latest punching bag of politicians getting some air time. School was ditched for another Climate Strike around the country, that not only called for action on climate change, but also featured calls for Māori rights and a free Palestine. Associate Education Minister David Seymour said it was 'unacceptable' for students to protest during school hours and they should be marked absent by schools. He's right on both accounts. Ideally our children would be in school, and they will be marked as absent - unjustified absent even. Not that that means much. But here's why I don't like using youth as political point scoring: We want our youth to be curious, and engaged with the world. We want them to have their own opinions, a vision for the future, and hope. But when they express this we seem to get miffed. We talk about the need for civics to be taught in school - but when young people taking an interest in Government policy and global events we demean them. Just because they have views that may be different to other generations doesn't make them any less valid. Listening to other people's points of view and understanding their perspective is as important in a civil society as knowing how to voice your own views. We are not teaching youth this by gaslighting them. Sure, there are teenagers who aren't really engaged with the issues who likely took the day off school to attend, but that's only a problem if they aren't attending school regularly - and that's where our focus should be. If your kid does attend school most of the time and just went along to check it out - clock it up as a valuable life experience. They're not ram-raiding a dairy for vapes in a stolen car. Or swanning around on an international family holiday in term time. There are lots of reasons why teenagers aren't in school. Is this reason so bad? And remember, as annoying as the disruption is for teachers when teenagers don't turn up to school, it's actually not hard to catch up on a day's work. As one of my children (who didn't attend the protest said), the Minister for Education keeps telling us the curriculum is poked. That's not much of an incentive to go to school. Many claim a student-led climate protest is a waste of time, and won't achieve anything. The same could be said about various other protests we've seen over the last 4 years - but what I would say to politicians who dismiss these protesters as just kids who should be at school, do so at their own peril. Many of those expressing their concerns at this Government's climate policies, or lack of them, will be voting in a couple of years, and becoming young leaders in their own right. My disagreement with David Seymour on truancy has been short-lived this week - because I could not agree more with him today.  Those kids out bunking school today so they can strike for the climate should be marked down as truant: Explained but unjustified absence.  I think I'm less tolerant of it today than I was when these shenanigans first started up because at least the ones who were striking back in 2019 when their messiah Greta Thunberg was leading them seemed to be genuinely motivated by the delusion that the opinion of children counted.   Now though, the reality must have set in. They can't apply enough political pressure to actually affect change. You can have as many children out striking on the streets as you like - if they can't vote, it doesn't matter.   Plus, we have a truancy crisis.  We've been talking about this for months now. Regular attendance at school has fallen from 70% in 2015 to 40% at last count in 2022. The truancy crisis is more of a pressing threat to their future than the climate crisis. They are frankly at greater risk of being unable to do maths than they are at risk of a wave eroding mummy and daddy's beach house.   What are their parents thinking allowing them to do this? What a shocking attitude towards their education at a time when everyone in this country knows they need every minute in the classroom they can get.  Anyway, my favourite part of their strike is that they have now expanded their kaupapa.  No longer is this just a strike about the climate - it is now also about toi tu te tiriti, it is about freeing Palestine, ending the fast-track approvals bill, keeping the ban on oil and gas, and lowering the voting age to 16.  It's about everything, basically. Everything except the most important thing they could be doing as children... learning. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A nationwide climate strike organised by a coalition of organisations including Fridays for Future, School Strike 4 Climate, and Toitū te Tiriti is happening this Friday April 5th. The strike is demanding the coalition government to slow down the Fast Track Approvals Bill, keep the ban on oil and gas, uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi, protect land and moana, and more.  It will also stand in solidarity with the call to free Palestine, demanding an end to Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories and calling for the New Zealand government to provide emergency humanitarian visas to Palestinians with family in Aotearoa.  Producer Sofia Roger Williams spoke to one of the organisers of the Tāmaki Makaurau strike, Sophora from Fridays for Future, about these demands, youth-led activism, and how people can get involved.

He also serves as an advisor to world hunger projects in developing countries and with municipalities in the United States, receiving an honorary award from the Hawaii Senate for his pioneering work regarding their food choice-environment connection.  Dr. Oppenlander has extensively studied the effect our food choices have on our health and the immense impact those choices have on our planet. His research has taken him to nearly every area in the United States and to numerous other countries on nearly every continent. He is president and founder of an organic plant-based food production company and education business, co-founder of an animal rescue and sanctuary (with his wife, Jill), developer of the first environment-food choice academy course of study and subsequent ambassador program, and has given hundreds of lectures, presentations, interviews, and open discussions on the topic of food choice.  Dr. Oppenlander has been a keynote speaker within numerous festivals, conferences, and events, while presenting lectures and workshops at numerous universities and colleges. He has been a featured guest on a number of radio shows, and has contributed to numerous magazines and books. With his work, Dr. Oppenlander addresses the fact that our current choices of foods are causing Global Depletion-the loss of our land, water, food supply, biodiversity, energy resources, and our own health as well as negatively impacting climate change, and that various irreversible tipping points have been already reached.  In compelling fashion, Dr. Oppenlander reveals serious inefficiencies and unsustainable practices in our current food production system and explores unique solutions. Along the way, Dr. Oppenlander challenges audiences with new insights regarding how this has happened, exposing our cultural, social, educational, political, and even media influences.  He is the founder and president of Inspire Awareness Now, a non-profit organization committed to education and creating change in the world as it relates to food choice and optimizing the long-term health of our planet.  To Contact  Dr. Richard A. Lucia Urreta is a junior in high school from Houston. Growing up on the Gulf Coast, she was used to big storms and hurricanes. But she noticed they were getting scarier and more frequent. Then in September 2019, Tropical Storm Imelda hit, and Lucia knew it was time to take action. She organized a climate strike in front of city hall, spoke in front of the city council about the need for action, and started a petition to create a youth climate council for Houston. Lucia has been vocal about helping her community fight the climate crisis ever since.  Lucia also works with Climate Cardinals (climatecardinals.org), an organization that makes climate science accessible in over 100 languages.
