I'm excited to announce that we've restarted the panel format. Many of you will remember that I used to put together monthly panels with experts on popular topics. The truth is that they can be tough to coordinate and take a lot more planning than regular interview episodes so I let them go while I focused on other projects, but thanks to help from some digital tools and popular requests from listeners, we're working to bring these episodes back on a monthly basis. So if you haven't heard previous panel episodes, I'll give you a quick recap. As part of my role building the Regen ag community in Europe with Climate Farmers, I'm always trying to facilitate access to good information from experienced practitioners in regenerative agriculture. Oftentimes I look to organize these panels around the common questions that come up in our community chats. In other cases I see a lack of clear and concise information around a topic of interest. Other times I hear people referencing the work of other practitioners around the world for opportunities and inspiration and I try to connect them with each other in the Q&A sessions. Another motivation for organizing these is to increase awareness of the practicalities that are behind the aspiration to great achievements in land management. I hope that all of you out there listening to these episodes leave after having heard these episodes feeling that the incredible accomplishments and projects of the people we highlight are achievable and replicable and that you can do things like this too. You may not personally identify with their particular contexts or want to mimic them or their work exactly, but I hope you might find a point of connection in their stories and their journeys. Every project starts as an idea or a dream or a feeling that is nurtured into its potential by the people and communities that have skin in the game and dedicate their time and efforts to co-create that potential. With that said I want to introduce the panel and our speakers for this episode. So today we'll be exploring the challenges and opportunities in mixed enterprise farming. By that I mean farms that sell and range of products, especially of different food categories such as cereals and cattle, or market garden and laying hens and agrotourism and farm tours. I was really lucky to get three farmers together from very different regions who are pioneering diverse enterprise farming on their land. Now it's not usually the case that the farmers I get to speak with are people I've met in person or farms that I've physically visited, but in this case I've been to and even ran some events and projects with each of the farmers who I'm speaking with. Maria Gimenez comes to us from Wilmers Gaerten just south of Berlin Germany. Francisco Alves comes from Herdade de Sao Luis, Porcus Natura in Alentejo Portugal, and Ariane Lotti joins us from Tenuta San Carlo near the Tuscan coast in Italy. They each give much better intros of themselves and their farms than I can so I'll let them do that, but before we jump into the panel, you should know that there's a video version of this panel that includes the Q&A session in this last half hour which I am clipping off here for the podcast version. You can find that on the Climate Farmers YT chanel and if you happen to be an active farmer anywhere in Europe, you can also join the Climate Farmers community for free and participate in the farmer to farmers learning platform that we've built by going to Climate Farmers.org The community is part of a non-profit dedicated to assisting farmers at all levels of their transition to regenerative management.

“So this idea of memory, it's very interesting because when you enter a specific space, when you get to a specific location, it's this idea that the house should bring you back to this long term memory. Giving you this feeling of comfort and of confidence as well because you've known this place for a long time.” We're in great company with João Rodrigues, Founder and Owner of Silent Living - a lifestyle of happiness and fulfillment that he pursues through a curated collection of stays around Portugal. What began as family residencies - gathering places for friends, family and travelers - has since opened for global guests to stay and experience these happy memories, moments of connection to the land, and genuine Portuguese hospitality.   What some may say is serendipity, and with admittedly no grand plan, João has slowly built over time a collection of five homes, a fifth generation farm, and fine dining restaurant, across the most fruitful regions of Portugal - Alentejo, Comporta and Lisbon - listening to the needs of his guests, local community and natural landscapes, throughout every step of the way. In this episode, João shares personal passions and inspirational stories that make up the ingredients in his recipe for how to experience a home away from home at Silent Living. Top Takeaways [1:55] João shares how living a life surrounded by a close knit family, yet taking to the skies as a pilot for TAP Airlines, has given him a great global perspective on where he wants to leave his legacy for this world and his children.  [6:00] Portuguese hospitality, while not unique to João and his family, is something they embrace fully at Silent Living - whether through a tour of the house or a friendly introduction to the chef and the housekeeper, he wants his worldly guests to feel at home.  [9:15] How João came to organically collect his houses across Alentejo, Comporta and Lisbon in Portugal, with multi-generational ties to these places, personal connections to the locals, dedicated attention to the history, and a desire to be authentic in each design aesthetic. [17:00] Silent Living is a recipe that was inspired by guests and made with ingredients of Home, Local, Simplicity, Family, Nature, Material, Atmosphere, and most importantly for João, Memory. [32:30] Practicing holistic management and regenerative agriculture at Herdade no Tiempo, not only provides products and produce to Lisbon's fine dining restaurant Ceia - but together through a creative tasting menu they raise awareness of climate change, offering a new taste of living in harmony with nature.  [43:00] The future for Silent Living goes beyond singular houses, a farm, and a restaurant, looking to build a small village for sustainably minded locals and visitors alike.   Notable Mentions Architect Manuel Aires Mateus Allan Savory's TED Talk on Desertification Climate Farmers Santa Fe Boating Experience Visit For Yourself Silent Living Website @silent__living @herdadenotiempo @ceia_table Stay In Good Company Website

A Liber Pater é o melhor vinho do mundo? O tinto alentejano de 2015 era a primeira referência da série limitada “Wines From Another World”. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts

This is the weekly newspaper column.Glass and its alternatives 2-22-2023Glass wine bottles have enjoyed a long and storied run since they were adopted after advances in glass making in the 1600s. Now, however, glass has competition.Prior to glass bottles, wine was transported and stored in wooden barrels, clay amphorae, and sheep skin bota bags. Glass provided instant advantages. Glass is durable, strong, inert, transparent, can be formed in attractive shapes and sizes, and is relatively easy and inexpensive to make.Glass allows wines to age gracefully for years without degradation or imparting taint or unwanted flavors. No other container offers those properties. Glass will remain the go-to container for wines made for aging for the foreseeable future. But glass is not the best container for all wines, or even most wines. The majority of wines are consumed shortly after purchase. Glass offers no advantage for such wines and has disadvantages. If glass goes into a landfill, it remains there for tens of thousands of years. Glass is heavy, incurring costs in transportation and storage. Although glass can be recycled, recycling glass is an expensive process in transporting to recycle centers and in the recycling process. The wine industry—the beverage industry in general—is working the problem. Some alternatives:• Lighter glass bottles, bottles made with recycled glass, reusable bottles. The thickness of the glass in a wine bottle has no impact on wine.• Bag-in-a-box, aka “boxed wine.”• Aluminum containers.• PET bottles (recyclable plastic, often found in bottled water).• Aseptic cartons (milk and juice containers). All non-glass alternatives deliver significant advantages in weight, recyclability, and cost. None of them offer proven ability to store wine for extended lengths of time, but less than 10 percent of wines improve with aging. Currently, 77 percent of all wine is sold in glass bottles. Glass bottles—manufacturing shipping, warehousing, and disposal—account for 40 percent of a typical winery's carbon footprint.Glass wine bottles are here to stay, but environmental and cost concerns makes it increasingly more likely you will be pouring from a non-glass container in the future.Tasting notes• Herdade do Esporão Monte Velho Rosé 2021: Demure, lilting rosé charms with delicate red fruit, food-friendly acidity. $8-12 Link to my review• Feudo Montoni Nero D'Avola Lagnusa 2020: Sicily's signature red.

In this episode, I am speaking with Luis Patrão, director of enology and viticulture at Coelheiros, a stunning 800 hectare, historic estate, north of Evora, in the centre of Alentejo. [Support this channel on https://patreon.com/genncc and find more info at https://genn.cc ] When I visited the estate, Luis gave me a guided tour to demonstrate how the 600+ hectare cork oak forest, 50 hectares of vines, and the 40 hectare walnut orchard are being transformed into a regenerated resilient, and balanced ecosystem that is simply glorious. It wasn't always like this. The estate had more of a focus on hunting, running all the way back to 1467. It was only at the end of the last century, that Coelheiros started to be transformed into what is now a buzz of biodiversity. Luis explains how their biggest challenge has been small birds and bugs, that eat everything from the plants themselves to the fruit they produce. Wetland restoration and ending centuries of hunting have seen the return of birds of prey such as eagles and falcons. These in return have driven away the small birds that eat the fruit, and the introduction of bats is proving effective at balancing the bug population. Luis also talks about the increased use of grapes more suited to the climate. Alicant Bouschet is again a favourite for this purpose, where the berries have proven to be more resilient to heatwaves, as well as having a later ripening period. A feature of this conversation is that Luis talks about the positive impact this process of ‘working with nature' has had on the wine quality, which he describes as being “ more pure and with greater richness on the palate”. This kind of readiness for the new cycles of hotter and intense climatic conditions mean that Coelheiros is one of the leaders in Alentejo in starting out on the pilgrimage towards a truly sustainable viticulture.

In this episode of Sustainability in Alentejo Wine Series, I am speaking with João Roquette, CEO and Chairman of the Esporão group about the company's transformation to organic and resilient production. Esporão is one of the most famous brand names in Portuguese wine and especially in Alentejo. João has played a leading role driving the company's move towards organic viticulture. During my visit I saw huge amounts of effort going into researching indigenous varieties for adaptability to the new climate conditions which are extreme today but will rapidly become normal tomorrow. The extent of this work has made Esporão a phenomenal success. The company owns 623ha of organic vineyards – the biggest ownership in Portugal, representing about 18% of total organic production in the country. Here João talks us through how the company reoriented itself as a pioneer towards sustainability goals before the WASP programme was established. He also says, the Alentejo region as a whole should be proudly waving the flag as leaders in Portugal in taking bold environmental action.

In this Alentejo Wines episode, I am speaking to Iain Richardson, from the wine estate, Mouchão. [View more on https://genn.cc and support this channel on https://patreon.com/genncc] Mouchão is a great example of an integrated estate in Alentejo where different flora and fauna are interwoven to create the whole. The Sobreiro, or cork oak trees, are an integral part of the history of this region and yet, as Iain tells us, climate is one of the drivers that is causing a substantial die-off against which he and his team are fighting. For reference, the Arroba, mentioned in this recording is actually a measure used for weighing cork, equivalent to 15 kilograms. The story of Mouchao is one that really marries the past with the present in terms of identifying the moment where history and tradition are faced with the need for non-linear responses in order to achieve sustainability. It is the story that really connects the glass of wine, or jug of olive oil, to the seemingly infinite physical and chemical interactions within the biosphere. It is also the great human challenge to adapt to these changes, regenerate our soils, and build resilience while learning to live in a different world. This feeds back into the importance of what programmes like WASP can achieve when they provide the framework for measuring change and disseminating knowledge.

In a multifunctional agricultural system, that has characterized our viticulture for centuries, biodiversity provides important ecological services that underpin vineyard health, productivity, quality and resilience. In the last decades, vineyard expansion and intensification are compromising the diversity and abundance of service-providing organisms, due to landscape homogenization, loss of key structures such as stone walls and hedgerows, high mechanization (including frequent tilling), and/or overuse of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides. The wine industry relies on nature, so we need to enhance and preserve the Eco services that nature provides, such as carbon storage, natural control of undesirable organisms, self-regulation and reliance on the natural balance that biodiversity provides. On the other hand, and in line with the European Green Deal, the European Commission adopted a comprehensive new Biodiversity Strategy to bring nature back into our lives and a Farm to Fork Strategy for a fair, healthy and environmentally friendly food system. These two strategies are mutually reinforcing, bringing together nature, farmers, businesses and consumers for jointly working towards a competitively sustainable future. This Climate Talk will address how farmers are managing biodiversity in their vines and how they can benefit from the balance provided by it. For that purpose, in this conversation we will bring together, producers from different parts of the world to talk about their experience on how they are enhancing the role of biodiversity in their vines. They will share the solutions they have been implementing and the impacts on their grapes and wines, and how these practices are aligned with their challenge of adapting to climate change. In this debate, we will also explore the importance of international and national strategies and the role of each partner in achieving the goals set. Host: PEDRO BEJA . Portugal .
