At the 100 day mark of Donald Trump's second term as president, the political scientists at Bright Line Watch released their 25th report on the state of American democracy entitled “Threats to democracy and academic freedom after Trump's second first 100 days.” Based on polling both experts (760 political scientists) and the public (representative sample of 2000 Americans), the Bright Line Watch researchers find that the Trump administration has challenged constitutional and democratic norms on a wide range of issues, including the scope of executive power and the authority of courts to check it, individual freedom of expression, due process and habeas corpus, immigration, and academic freedom. In this episode of POSTSCRIPT: Conversations on Politics and Political Science, two of Bright Line Watch's co-directors analyze the latest report – and what it means for American democracy. Topics include democratic performance, threats to democracy and academic freedom and self-censorship. Dr. John Carey (he/him) is the Wentworth Professor in the Social Sciences at Dartmouth College. He is the author of 6 books and dozens of articles on democratic institutions, representation, and political beliefs. Dr. Gretchen Helmke is the Thomas H. Claims this is about his ego rather than political integrity, as he's upset they opposed him. Accuses Harris of violating campaign laws but ignores similar issues in his own campaign. Trump's Tariff Policy Critique (00;24;19;26 - 00;29;39;05)Exposes economic consequences of Trump's tariffs, debunking his claim that China pays them. Highlights real-world impacts like price hikes, layoffs, and U.S. economic strain due to a weak manufacturing base. This challenges populist rhetoric and reveals policy flaws affecting everyday Americans.Infant Death After Vaccines (00;36;57;12 - 00;43;09;00)A tragic case of a six-month-old dying post-vaccination raises serious questions about routine vaccine safety and SIDS correlations. Her error and Stephen Miller's suggestion to suspend it raise alarms about due process violations.Constitutional Concerns and Trump's Agenda (01;20;44;01 - 01;23;26;25)Suspending habeas corpus for migrants is constitutionally dubious, as the power resides with Congress, not the president. The “invasion” justification is weak, threatening civil liberties for all, including citizens critical of government policies.Stablecoin Bill and CBDC Concerns (01;40;02;12 - 01;42;23;23)The Senate's Genius Stablecoin Bill advances, raising fears of a trackable central bank digital currency (CBDC). Vance argues judges lack authority over legitimate executive powers, while critics warn of a constitutional crisis and unprecedented presidential power.CIA's Role in Governance (02;25;36;10 - 02;36;37;04)Mike Johnson's anecdote about Biden's unawareness reveals CIA influence in the White House. With so many issues stemming from President Trump's executive orders now before the Supreme Court, it's tough to know where to begin. So Andrew and Mary start this week with the arguments heard last Thursday from Mary's ICAP team on the courts issuing national injunctions in several birthright citizenship cases. They recap Thursday's highlights and note the Justices' interest in getting to the merits of the birthright issue. Then, they talk through two SCOTUS decisions from Friday and Monday: one on the Trump administration using the Alien Enemies Act to ‘extract' Venezuelan migrants, and the other on their attempt to revoke the protected status of Venezuelans. Last up, Andrew and Mary turn to the specifics of a few of the immigration removal cases, as hearings continue and the lack of due process continues to be challenged.Want to listen to this show without ads? Stephen Miller's got some ideas. So this week, Mary and Andrew start with a focus on his recent acknowledgement that the White House is considering suspending habeas corpus altogether for migrants. They talk about what that means, and the reality that it lacks any legal sniff test, which the Supreme Court agrees with. Then, they highlight what happens when due process works, after the release of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Tufts student who was detained by ICE over an opinion piece she wrote for the student newspaper. Next up, a significant decision from Judge Susan Illston out of California, putting a temporary hold on reducing the federal workforce. Mary and Andrew note what she held, including that the administration needs to follow procedure and get congressional buy in. And lastly, they preview the Supreme Court argument Mary's ICAP team is bringing this Thursday on birthright citizenship- not on the merits per se, but on the issue of national injunctions. And a quick eye pop on Trump's decision to swap out Ed Martin as the US Attorney for DC with yet another Fox News host, Jeanine Pirro.Want to listen to this show without ads? Long established legal norms continue to be challenged by Trump's Justice Department, leading Andrew and Mary to emphasize how the courts have grown increasingly frustrated with the administration's tactics. They begin with last Thursday's ruling from Judge Rodriguez in Texas, that Trump was unjustified in using the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelan migrants. After a review of what that means for his ‘extraction' efforts, Andrew and Mary go deep on an assessment made public from the National Intelligence Council, that indicates despite Trump's presidential proclamation evoking the Alien Enemies Act, intelligence officials do not see a strong link between the Venezuelan government and Tren de Aragua. And lastly this week, they look at the latest judicial pushback on Trump's attempts to threaten law firms, after Judge Beryl Howell ruled against his targeting of Perkins Coie by executive order.Further reading: Here is the assessment from the National Intelligence Council on the relationship between the Maduro government and Tren de Aragua, courtesy of the New York Times.Want to listen to this show without ads? Why is Everyone Talking About Project 2025 & Should You Be Worried? How Dangerous Is It? What Does it Mean for America? Is Project 2025 Trump's agenda? No matter which side of the political aisle you're on, America is being reshaped, and it's important to be aware of these big changes that will impact so many of us. As Trump's first 100 days in office for a second term comes to a close, we're breaking down Project 2025 - what it is, who's really behind it, how it's already restructuring society, what else is to come, the global implications, and why we need to start finally taking it seriously. David A. Graham (political & national affair staff writer at The Atlantic, author of The Project: How Project 2025 Is Reshaping America) gives his political analysis of the hidden dangers of Project 2025 — from mass federal layoffs and the erasure of environmental protections to the terrifying push for Christian-only values and a government that could soon look unrecognizable. With whispers of invading Canada, reclaiming the Panama Canal, and rewriting democracy itself, Graham dives deep into how this political earthquake could dismantle the U.S. system as we know it — and why now, more than ever, we need to wake up, speak out, and fight for what's left of due process, education, and basic rights. You can't afford to miss this episode of MBB! David A. Big news is happening at a breakneck pace these days. But on the cusp of the 100th day of President Donald Trump's second administration, let's take a pause to go back in time to Sept. 30, 1962.On that day, President John F. Kennedy sent U.S. military forces to protect James Meredith on the campus of the University of Mississippi. Meredith was the first Black student admitted to the school. That night, JFK addressed the nation from the White House. In his address JFK describes a moment when the word of the Constitution no longer prevails, is by most definitions a "constitutional crisis." Some of you think that moment is here. As part of our weekly series on the state of our democracy, "If You Can Keep It," we're posing a big question: Are we in a constitutional crisis?Want to support 1A? In his first presidential term, Donald Trump had to battle the deep state and the unelected federal bureaucracy. During his second term, he faces a rogue judiciary. Judges have attempted to interfere with the armed forces, stop government spending cuts, and halt deportations. Now the Trump administration has fired its first shot across the bow by arresting a Wisconsin judge for allegedly helping an illegal alien evade arrest. Radio host and author Jesse Kelly joins me to discuss this ongoing battle over constitutional governance. In this engaging conversation, Tara tackles the mounting legal challenges faced by President Trump, particularly in the context of a possible Supreme Court decision that could set dangerous precedents for immigration policy. The discussion explores the potential implications of a sealed motion in court, the prospect of bringing back a controversial figure, and the growing push from the left to force Trump into a battle with the judicial system. The conversation touches on the concept of defying the courts, drawing comparisons to Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln, while considering the legal and political ramifications of such a move. With tensions rising, Tara and her caller discuss whether Trump should call out Congress, or take the more drastic route of challenging the courts head-on. The episode highlights the constitutional crisis unfolding and the need for swift action.
In this heated discussion, Tara explores the ongoing legal struggles facing President Trump, including a surge in court rulings against his actions and the growing concern over judicial overreach. The conversation delves into the rising tension between the Trump administration and the judicial system, with a focus on the implications of recent court decisions, including the potential for setting harmful precedents in immigration law. Tara and her callers debate whether Trump should follow in the footsteps of past presidents like Andrew Jackson and defy the courts or push Congress to act. With the political and legal stakes higher than ever, they question whether Trump can still make meaningful progress or if he will be forced into a corner by a system seemingly stacked against him.
What is a constitutional crisis? For some, a constitutional crisis is when the president defies the Supreme Court, for others it is when a president simply defies a federal judge's order. Under the reign of President Trump and his administration, the country has dealt with a number of incidents where judicial orders have been disregarded. Kilmar Abrego Garcia, Rümeysa Öztürk, Mahmoud Khalil are three individuals who have taken center stage in the battle between the courts and the Trump administration, and the quest for due process. In this episode, Craig is joined by professor Kent Greenfield, the Dean's Distinguished Scholar at Boston College Law School. Craig & Kent discuss whether the country is currently in a constitutional crisis, the Trump administration's defiance of a Supreme Court order involving the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the United States, the power of judicial vs. executive branches, and the consequences for defying the rule of law. Mentioned in this Episode: Bipartisan Letter Coordinated by Kent Greenfield, Professor and Dean's Distinguished Scholar at Boston College Law School, and the American Constitution Society
Are we witnessing the beginning of the end for fossil fuels? This Earth Day, Outrage + Optimism explores a seismic shift in global energy: the possibility that major oil and gas companies are entering a self-managed decline. Have fossil fuel companies been overvalued for decades? And are they now quietly winding themselves down? For years, analysts and campaigners have questioned why these companies are valued as if they'll pump oil forever. With rising climate risks, tightening regulation, and growing investor scrutiny, the foundations of their business model have looked increasingly shaky. Now, something remarkable is happening. From Exxon to Shell, oil majors are cutting back on capital investment, failing to replace their reserves, and instead handing profits back to shareholders. Could this be the beginning of an industry in managed decline? In this Earth Day special, Christiana Figueres, Tom Rivett-Carnac, and Paul Dickinson sit down with Mark Campanale, founder of Carbon Tracker and the originator of the ‘stranded assets' concept that helped launch the global divestment movement. Is this truly the start of fossil fuel's final chapter? Or is it a strategic pivot - away from fuels and toward petrochemicals, plastics, and a long tail of influence?Learn more

The Trump administration's aggressive deportation practices, whether sending alleged gang members to a notorious El Salvadoran prison or rounding up foreign students for opposing Israel's war in Gaza, have led many pundits and others to raise the alarm about a Constitutional crisis and the evisceration of due process. But as Jimmy points out, this crisis has been decades in the making, and dates back to when Nobel Peace Prize-winner Barack Obama maintained a “kill list” and signed into law the virtual elimination of Habeas Corpus. Jimmy and Americans' Comedian Kurt Metzger discuss why now all the President has to do is cry “terrorism” and Constitutional protections fly right out the Oval Office window. Plus segments on the recent all-women Blue Origin “space flight” and the pro-Palestinian protester removed and arrested at a Bernie Sanders rally. Also featuring Stef Zamorano!

In the latest episode of Shrinking Trump, Dr. John Gartner and Dr. Harry Segal dive headfirst into the psychological and political chaos Donald Trump's is unleashing on the world. From his malignant narcissism to troubling signs of cognitive decline, the hosts break down how Trump's behavior is reshaping America into an increasingly unstable landscape. Be sure to subscribe to our show on your favorite podcast app: Our site Subscribe on iTunes Subscribe on Spotify Subscribe on Amazon Music Subscribe on iHeartRadio Dr. Gartner kicks things off by revealing he almost titled this episode “Apocalypse Now”—a nod to the unfolding constitutional crisis, which they describe as riddled with pathological lies, defiance of Supreme Court orders, and dangerous authoritarian policies. They tackle the Trump administration's blatant disregard for legal norms, exploring how Trump's persona appeals to autocratic world leaders like the President of El Salvador, and drawing eerie parallels to oppressive regimes of the past. As leading psychologists, Dr. Gartner and Dr. Segal take a deep dive into Trump's severe narcissistic personality disorder, which they say is the driving force behind his chaotic governance. They examine how his thrill in flouting the law and disregarding human rights is a symptom of his narcissism—which poses serious risks to the nation's well-being. But we also take a look at moments of resilience, like Harvard University's bold stand against federal overreach. The hosts praise this act of defiance as a beacon of hope, urging other institutions to follow suit and push back against Trump's threats. Dr. Gartner and Dr. Segal issue an urgent call to action: stay vigilant, stay engaged, and fight for democracy no matter how you're able. Every proactive step, no matter how small, helps chart a new course for America. The episode is packed with warnings and unique insights, but it also inspires hope for a democratic resurgence. Episode 4415: The Supreme Court Creates Constitutional Crisis, MTG Rally
MSNBC's Ari Melber hosts “The Beat” on Tuesday, April 15, and reports on the Trump administration's extreme efforts to circumvent the Supreme Court's order to “facilitate” Abrego Garcia's return, as well as Harvard University defying Donald Trump. Plus, Jeff Garlin and Antonio Villaraigosa join for the latest "Fallback" installment. Gov. Maura Healey and Asha Rangappa join.
It's a Newsday Tuesday with Emma on the mic. She recaps the chilling spectacle that was the Bukele-Trump Oval Office meeting / press availability, including the Kafkaesque exchange over the wrongfully deported Maryland father Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia. As Emma explains, despite the Supreme Court's ruling that the administration must make an effort to bring Abrego Garcia home, the Trump administration and and El Salvador's crypto-strong man both claim to be unable to abide by the ruling out of deference to one another. Emma then talks to Annelle Sheline, a research fellow in the Quincy Institute's Middle East program who's latest paper focuses on the U.S.'s prioritization of weapons sales over human rights. Annelle gets into some of the thinking of her state department colleagues over this issue, which she finds to be rooted in outdated American exceptionalism. The hypocrisy is particularly noteworthy when it comes to Israel, despite growing public sentiment against Israel's destruction of Gaza and perpetual subjugation of the Palestinian people. Read Annelle's paper "Under Primacy, Weapons Sales Will Always Supersede Human Rights" here: https://quincyinst.org/research/under-primacy-weapons-sales-will-always-supersede-human-rights/# In the Fun Half, Emma further peels the onion of Stephen Miller's lies about the Abrego Garcia case, citing the administration's own court filings. She then delves into the debate between Megyn Kelly and Matt Walsh over trad wives and whether women should only tend to the needs of their husbands and children. Ben Shapiro and Some More News also get in on the action. And a caller asks how he might talk to members of his family who have gone down the conservative rabbit hole.
