Edmund Shing, Global Chief Investment Officer of BNP Paribas Wealth Management unveils his convictions for April 2025: Massive US tariff hike: this represents one of the biggest tariff increases in the history of the US. It will probably take the effective tariff rate from around 2.5% pre-Trump 2.0 to 22% currently. This is highest level since 1910. The announced tariffs are significantly larger than either we or the market had anticipated.Greater risk of a stagflation scenario for the US economy. The upcoming Q1 earnings season as well as business and consumer surveys will be important to monitor in view of the risks for employment and investments. This suggest a more cautious approach to asset allocation in the coming months.Elevated uncertainty supports US Treasury bond demand: the trend towards lower yields in the US is likely to persist. Investors will seek refuge in safe-haven assets. We are tactically turning Positive on US Treasuries and have revised our 3-month target for the US 10-year yield to 4%.More caution on stocks warranted: the result of yesterday's tariff announcement is clearly negative for growth on a global basis and even  carries the risk of stagflation for the US economy. We downgrade our Equities view from Overweight to Neutral.Pressure on US corporate earnings: the effects from the tariff announcements should have negative impacts on consumption while driving up companies' input costs, pressuring profit margins. We downgrade our view on the US equity market from Neutral to Underweight.Hosted by Ausha. See ausha.co/privacy-policy for more information.

This food addict's story was about fear, which led her to go to the food. It was a drug that made her feel safe. Although her family looked normal from the outside, her dad was an alcoholic, and she did not realize how cunning the disease of addiction was until later in life. As early as five years old, she was uncomfortable in her body. There was a constant desire to be thin, leading her to avoid eating all day, just to come home and binge. High school consisted of drinking and smoking. After one year of college, she married her high school boyfriend, had two children, and stayed clean for a while. Her marriage ended in divorce, leaving her a single mom and broke. She knew alcohol was a problem, so she joined Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) at age 39. Despite seeing her sister suffer from bulimia and anorexia, and ultimately die by suicide, she continued to eat addictively. After getting sober, she finally realized food was also a problem. She eventually found Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous (FA). Underweight when joining the program, she has now been at a healthy weight for almost 20 years. She is available for her relationships - showing up as a mother and a grandmother. After obtaining several degrees, there is joy in her career. She now has a kit of tools that helps her feel safe and live free from food addiction. She hopes others can experience that miracle too.

This week, we're talking about health qualifying for LTC benefits. What to do... What not to do... LTC planning is all about timing.  If you apply at the wrong time or with the wrong company, you could be declined for something that would have been approved had we waited for the right time or company.  We don't want to make this mistake. It takes a lot longer to overturn a decline than it does to wait until the best time to apply for a more likely approval. LTC underwriters really are nice people.  Their job is to find reasons someone would be too much risk to the company's other clients.  My goal is to know where and when you are most likely to be approved. If you have a health concern and wonder if it is an acceptable risk to getting LTC coverage, ask me for help.  The insurance companies are not a part of our conversation until we invite them in with an application. This week, I explore ways to help horses that find it hard to gain weight. Many horses struggle to gain weight, which is a significant concern for their owners, particularly during winter. Despite being well-fed, those horses often remain thin, unable to build and maintain muscle mass. It is a common issue, particularly among thoroughbred breeds with high metabolisms. As those horses age, keeping weight on them becomes even more challenging. So, today, I share various dietary strategies to help hard keepers gain weight and improve their overall health.Factors to Rule Out Before Increasing FoodBefore deciding to increase the food intake to address weight loss in your horse, you need to rule out other potential health issues that may impact their ability to maintain weight. Equine Dental HealthHealthy teeth are crucial for a horse to chew and digest its food. Misalignment, sharp edges, missing teeth, abscesses, or sore gums can make eating uncomfortable, leading to weight loss. Symptoms like dropping food (quidding) could indicate dental issues. I recommend regular checks by an equine dentist to maintain oral health and efficient digestion.UlcersUlcers, particularly in performance horses, can significantly impact appetite and weight. Up to 80% of horses may have ulcers or related lesions. Symptoms include decreased appetite and rapid weight loss. Stress and medication can exacerbate ulcers, leading to a pot-bellied appearance and hollow flanks. Treatment often involves medication and dietary adjustments to support digestive health.Leaky GutLeaky gut, caused by the over-fermentation of starches and sugars in the hindgut, leads to intestinal gas, heat, toxins, and systemic toxicity, causing weight loss, diarrhea, and laminitis. It is essential to support the hindgut and digestive health to manage and prevent those symptoms.ParasitesActive parasite infections interfere with nutrient absorption and can cause significant weight loss. Chemical dewormers are essential, as natural remedies are often ineffective against active infestations. Parasites can cause anemia and deplete vitamins and minerals, further impacting the health and weight of a horse.Stress and Hormonal ImbalancesStress affects the ability of a horse to maintain weight. High stress can lead to muscle wasting, particularly in horses with conditions like Cushing's disease (PPID), so it is essential to manage stress through proper nutrition, environmental enrichment, and sometimes hormonal regulation.Respiratory IssuesConditions like COPD or heaves can prevent proper blood oxygenation, making it difficult for horses to build mass and tissue. Addressing respiratory health and ensuring efficient gas exchange in the lungs is crucial for those horses to maintain or gain weight.Importance of FiberFiber is essential for horses as it ferments into energy in the form of volatile fatty acids, fueling their cells. Ideal fiber levels in hay are crucial for energy and digestive health. However, too much fiber can be counterproductive if it is not digestible, requiring horses to eat more to meet their nutritional needs.Hay and Slow FeedersProviding hay 24/7 is essential, especially for hard keepers. Slow feeders can help to manage intake, but for horses that need to gain weight, loose hay or feeders with larger holes may be necessary to ensure they get enough calories. Owners should tailor the quality and type of hay to meet the needs of each horse.Variety in Hay TypesUsing different types of hay can help manage the dietary needs of a herd, especially when perfect hay is hard to find. It is beneficial to introduce variety and ensure the hay is

Equity markets kicked off the 2024 trading year on a sour note, with the S&P 500 falling about 1% at the session low. The move is partly due to a downgrade for Apple that shaved more than 4.25% off of its price. Barclays downgraded the stock to Underweight, citing concerns about hardware sales centered on the iPhone. At the same time, the VIX advanced to show a bottom and a high potential for a market reversal. The combination of weak S&P action and rising VIX suggests a top has been hit for equities that may result in a deep correction. The primary catalyst this week, aside from the turning of the year, will be the NFP report on Friday. The NFP is expected to align with the outlook for a soft landing and may get the S&P 500 back into rally mode. If not, the market is heading lower in the first month of the year, which points to a soft first half followed by a rebound in the second, just like in 2023.

While many horses are considered overweight and are considered easy keepers, often owners will have horses that are difficult to maintain weight and are considered hard keepers. We provide a brief review of the Henneke Body Condition Scoring System and also discuss the Tribute Wellness System. Together, they can be used to evaluate how well your horses are doing with their diets. We discuss what could be considered an underweight horse and what nutrients these horses may be lacking in the diet. Then our focus switched to just how to feed an underweight horse to bring them back into a proper body condition. Like any diet evaluation, this starts with a horse's forage portion of the diet. High quality forage is always important for any horse. Then when evaluating the concentrate portion of the diet, we discuss many important considerations for horse owners. Throughout the podcast we give tips and advice on how best to manage the diet of these "hard keepers". Finally, it is worth for extreme cases with horses that are in a very low body condition (BCS 1-2); these animals will need a special refeeding program. In these instances we urge you to seek advice from your veterinarian and you can also reach out to us for help.  You can access the Tribute Wellness System HERE While many horses are considered overweight and are considered easy keepers, often owners will have horses that are difficult to maintain weight and are considered hard keepers. You keep asking good questions, and so I keep answering them! Although only a very few percentage of eating disorder sufferers is underweight, diet culture and many mental health facilities make a big deal out of recovering when you're not underweight. So how do you do it? Why do you have to gain weight when you recover from a restrictive eating disorder, and how do you cope with the weight gain itself, as well as with comments from friends, family, and (mental) health professionals? And on that note… is eating sugar really that bad? What if you are “addicted to sugar” (spoiler alert: you're not), how do you (not) stop? And while I offer outpatient treatment, sometimes, going inpatient may be necessary or helpful. Curious to know what I think about inpatient treatment, or do you want to know more about how to cope with the challenges (both positive and negative) you may face when going inpatient, and how to get better rather than worse? Narado Zeco Powell - The Matter Over Mind Experience podcast narado@zecohealth.com www.ZecoHealth.com In this podcast interview between Brad Williams from Over 40 Fitness Hacks and Zeco Narado from The Matter Over Mind Experience podcast, Zico shares his journey from being underweight in his childhood to achieving a healthy and fit lifestyle. Growing up in Jamaica, Zeco had a preference for snacks over cooked food, which led to his underweight condition. When he moved to the U.S. at 16, he realized the need to gain weight and started weight training and learning about nutrition. Over the years, Zeco's weight fluctuated, but he never developed an eating disorder. However, he realized that despite being fit, he wasn't healthy. He had asthma, allergies, high blood pressure, and eczema. A pivotal moment came when he sought advice from a doctor and was only recommended medication. This spurred his journey into exploring alternative approaches to health. Zeco began reading books by Dr. Steven Gundry and learned about lectins and anti-nutrients in plants. Initially skeptical, he started making small changes, such as sprouting beans and washing rice, practices he remembered from his grandparents. These changes gradually improved his health, including better breathing and increased energy. Zeco delved into various aspects of holistic health, including nutrition, sleep, and lifestyle changes. Ultimately, he not only maintained a healthy weight but also improved his overall health. Inspired by his transformation, Zeco obtained certifications in fitness and nutrition, launched his own podcast, and connected with experts in the field to educate others about the importance of gut health, nutrition, and holistic well-being. Brad Williams shared a similar journey triggered by a lower back injury, which led him to focus on gut health, allergies, and overall well-being. Both Zceo and Brad emphasize the importance of optimizing the body as one ages and the significance of the mind-body connection in maintaining health and longevity. They stress that feeling good should be prioritized over aesthetics and advocate for educating people on these vital topics through podcasts, YouTube, and discussions with health experts. Using classic trend analysis, his team simply highlighted the series of higher highs and higher lows appearing in the equity index. But their process is revealed in the 300+ pages of the “Informed Investor” research report which delivers in-depth analysis of sectors, industry subgroups and a healthy appreciation for relative strength.Craig has a deep appreciation for the analysts who preceded him at Piper Sandler including Steve Leuthold who sadly passed in March, 2023, and Ed Nikoski who Craig worked with closely before his retirement. There is a strong technical analysis community in Minnesota which now includes Ralph Acampora, CMT. Summary Neuron counts have historically been used as a proxy for the moral weight of different animal species. While alternate systems have been proposed in response to criticisms of using neuron counts alone, neuron counts likely remain a useful input into these more holistic weighting processes. EA - GiveWell's Moral Weights Underweight the Value of Transfers to the Poor by Trevor Woolley

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: GiveWell's Moral Weights Underweight the Value of Transfers to the Poor, published by Trevor Woolley on December 13, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Ethan Ligon and I submitted this to GiveWell for their "Change Our Minds" contest this year (2022). They will be announcing winners later this week (Dec 15, I think). But before they do, we wanted to share our submission here in case anyone is interested! Ethan has done some amazing work measuring real-world marginal utility by estimating demand systems using consumer purchases data. Seeing this prior work of his and thinking it may be particularly relevant to GiveWell's evaluations (and EA in general), I approached him and we wrote a short paper which we ended up submitting for the challenge. Rather than post the entire paper here and risk losing info in the reformatting process, I ask that you see the Google Doc of it here. While it does get a bit technical, I've tried to include non-technical summaries for most of the major sections. So in case you feel like some of the details are getting intense, I encourage you to at least read through the intro paragraphs and conclusions as you skim over it. If you get anything out of it, let it be that while total utility levels (over consumption) are unidentifiable, marginal utilities (over total consumption) are not--they can be measured with data! In case you aren't convinced yet to read the full article, below is a quick excerpt from the Summary: GiveWell bases much of their cost-effectiveness analysis on the value of doubling consumption. Since increasing consumption expenditures is the primary effect of the GiveDirectly cash transfers program, GiveWell uses the effectiveness (value generated per dollar) of cash transfers as a metric for evaluating the effectiveness of all other programs. However, by valuing “doubling consumption”, GiveWell has assumed the functional form of utility over “real consumption” x to be log(x) and the functional form of marginal utility over consumption to be 1/x (since this is the derivative of log(x)). This is a valid utility function in the sense that it is one of many functions that satisfies the conditions of rationality, but there is strong evidence that it is not a good representation of the preferences of the Kenyan beneficiaries of the GiveDirectly experiment. The purpose of this article is to explain why GiveWell should reconsider using “doubling consumption” as the basis for assessing the value of consumption (or income) changes and instead value “halving marginal utility of expenditure”—what we think GiveWell actually intends to value. Using data from GiveDirectly's cash transfers program in Kenya (Haushofer and Shapiro 2016), we provide empirical evidence that rejects the use of any function that implies homothetic preferences (including marginal utility of 1/x). We then empirically estimate the true marginal utility over consumption (λ) as revealed by Kenyan beneficiaries of GiveDirectly's cash transfers program and show how the value per dollar of cash transfers is actually 2.6 times GiveWell's current number (from 0.0034 to 0.009). This is because 1/x is quickly dwarfed by revealed marginal utility, , at low levels of consumption. Therefore, valuing “doubling consumption” underweights the value of cash transfers to the very poor if we let them “speak” for themselves. Our "headline figure": FIGURE 5: Utilitarian ROI. The curves labeled cfe use the estimated marginal utilities of expenditure λ(x, p), with p either the values at baseline, or endline. The curve labeled log uses the marginal utility of expenditures implied by a logarithmic utility function used (implicitly) by GiveWell. 4.5. Utilitarian Return on Investment. For every dollar given to a particular household, there's some increase in utility, which we can think of a...

Episode 111: Pregnancy FAQ  Dr. Urso answers commonly asked questions during pregnancy.  You are listening to Rio Bravo qWeek Podcast, your weekly dose of knowledge brought to you by the Rio Bravo Family Medicine Residency Program from Bakersfield, California, a UCLA-affiliated program sponsored by Clinica Sierra Vista, Let Us Be Your Healthcare Home. This podcast was created for educational purposes only. Visit your primary care provider for additional medical advice.Written by Carmen Urso, MD. Edited by Hector Arreaza, MD.Pregnancy is one of the most exciting moments of a woman's life, but at the same time, it could be a little scary because whatever the mother does may affect the baby. This is why it is so important to make sure about general recommendations during pregnancy. The information I present here is evidence-based. 1. Should I take prenatal vitamins? The goal of prenatal supplements is to provide the vitamins and minerals needed to promote normal fetal development. Some studies have shown that in high-income countries where the food is vitamin-fortified, and typically people are well-nourished, vitamin supplementation has not proved to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. However, a Cochrane review of randomized trials in low- and middle-income countries with vitamin and mineral diet deficiency found that supplementation reduces the risk of low birth weight and small for gestational age. Because you don't always know the nutritional status of a patient, it is advised to use a standard prenatal vitamin. What are the most important vitamins in the prenatal period? The 2 most important elements are folic acid and iron, which can be found in regular prenatal vitamins. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) recommends multivitamins with: -Folic acid: 400mcg to 800mcg daily to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. It is recommended to start before pregnancy until the end of the first trimester (12 weeks). Patients with a history of fetal neural tubal defect should take 4000 mcg (4mg) daily. The USPSTF recommends (Grade A, 2017) to supplement with folic acid for all women of childbearing before pregnancy. Supplementation should start at least one month before pregnancy, according to CDC. -Iron: 30 mg/day to prevent maternal anemia. The formulation should contain 15-30 mg/dl. Most prenatal contain about 30 mg, which is considered a “low” dose, and 65 mg of elemental iron is equivalent to 325 mg of ferrous sulfate, which is a common supplement given to patients in our clinics. So, patients could take one tablet of 325 mg of ferrous sulfate daily and have enough for their pregnancy, or take it every other day if they are intolerant to iron]-Vitamin D: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with preterm birth and preeclampsia. 200-600 international units are recommended. ACOG does not recommend screening for vitamin D deficiency before or during pregnancy. The USPSTF concluded there is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against Vitamin D deficiency screening in asymptomatic adults. This is a Grade I recommendation.-Calcium: Supplements should contain 1000 mg/dL. Most multivitamins have 200-300mg; the rest of the daily calcium should come from dietary sources. Foods rich in calcium include dairy products such as milk, yogurt, cheese, soybeans, seeds, beans, lentils, and dark-green leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, and collard greens. Another source of vitamin D is sun exposure. We do not recommend sun exposure as a source of vitamin D, but there are benefits to sun exposure for other reasons, for example, mood.2. Should I be eating for 2 while I am pregnant? It is a misconception. Pregnant women do not have to eat for 2. Caloric intake will depend on the number of fetuses (single or multiple), the trimester, and the pre-pregnancy weight. During the first trimester, no extra daily calories are needed. In the second trimester, a pregnant person will need 340 extra calories/day, and in the third, 450 extra calories/day for a total of 2200 to 2900 kcal/day. The weight gain will be based on pre-pregnancy BMI (body mass index). For example, a patient who is overweight (BMI 20-29) should gain 15-25 lbs. in the whole pregnancy, but a patient with obesity (BMI above 30) should gain 11-20 lbs. only. These are the recommendations by the National Academy of Medicine.Interestingly, if you are underweight before pregnancy, you can gain 30-40 pounds.National Academy of Medicine Recommendations for Weight Gain in Pregnancy:Pre-pregnancy BMI Category (kg/m2)                  Recommended Weight Gain (lbs.) Underweight (less than 18.5)                                                       28–40 Normal weight (18.5-24.9)                                                              25-30Overweight (25.0-29.9)                                                                    15-25Obese (30 or greater)                                                                         11-203. Can I drink alcohol? There is not a safe level of alcohol during pregnancy. Alcohol can cause life-long birth defects. Even little amounts can cause problems to the baby, such as coordination, behavior, attention, and learning disability. Heavy drinking can cause fetal alcohol syndrome, characterized by developmental delay, short stature, abnormal facial features, small head size, vision impairments, and hearing difficulty. It is recommended to avoid alcohol at all costs during pregnancy. 4. Can I drink coffee? Caffeine increases catecholamine levels in the maternal blood, and it crosses the placenta. Caffeine was thought to increase the risk of spontaneous miscarriage, but recent studies showed that moderate caffeine intake was not related to miscarriage or preterm birth. ACOG states that low to moderate intake, less than 200mg (6 oz per day), does not appear to be associated with adverse effects. The amount of caffeine varies in different foods. For example, 8 oz of brewed coffee has approximately 137mg of caffeine. Also, we must remember that caffeine is in other drinks like soda and tea.Content of caffeine in different drinks: -Instant Coffee 76mg -Tea, Brewed 48mg; Instant 26-36mg-Caffeinated soft drink (12 oz) 37mg-Hot cocoa (12oz) 8-12mg-Chocolate milk (8oz) 5-8mg-Dark chocolate (1.45 oz) 30mg -Milk chocolate (1.55oz) 11mg -Semi-sweet chocolate (1/4 cup) 26-28mg -Chocolate syrup (tbsp) 3 mg-Coffee ice cream or frozen yogurt 2mg 5. Can I eat fish?Fish is an excellent source of omega 3, which is associated with improved neurodevelopment in children, decreased risk of preterm birth, and reduced allergy and atopic disease. Fish also contains mercury which can cause fetal neurologic damage. All fish contain mercury, but some have more than others. This is why it is so important to know what fish has more mercury content.ACOG recommends 2 to 3 servings per week. Pregnant women can have fish high in omega 3 and low in mercury. Some examples of fish that are high in omega 3 and low in mercury are anchovies, Atlantic herring, Atlantic mackerel, mussels, oysters, farmed and wild salmon, sardines, snapper, and trout. Seafood that is low in mercury and low in omega 3 includes shrimp, pollock, tilapia, cod, and catfish. Fish high in mercury include king mackerel, marlin, orange roughy, shark, swordfish, tilefish, and tuna bigeye. 6. Can I eat sushi?Raw fish can carry bacteria or parasites. Therefore, it is recommended not to have raw fish, but you can have cooked options like tempura sushi. For example, all ingredients are cooked in the California roll except the cucumber and avocado.7. Can I exercise?Yes. If you do not have any complications (healthy pregnancy), it is recommended that you have moderate-intensity aerobic exercise for 30 minutes, 5-7 days a week. Moderate exercise means you can carry on a normal conversation during exercise. For example, brisk walking, gardening, and dancing. The benefits of exercising during pregnancy go beyond maintaining a good weight. Exercise also decreases muscle discomfort (back pain, pelvic pain), makes the pelvic floor strong, and decreases the risk of urinary incontinence. Avoid exercises with a higher risk of injuries, such as skiing, horseback riding, scuba diving, hot yoga o hot Pilates (for the risk of overheating), and skydiving. 8. Hot tubs and swimmingHot tubs are not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, because higher body temperature has been associated with neural tube defects and miscarriage. Swimming does not appear to have any teratogenic effect because pools are typically cooler than body temperature. 9. Can I dye my hair? There is limited data on the safety of cosmetics. Because it is a topical product, systemic absorption is supposed to be low unless the skin is compromised. However, it is recommended to avoid ammonia-based products. Plant-based hair dyes are probably safe. Also, using these products in a well-ventilated area is recommended to avoid allergies. 10.  Is it safe to have sex during pregnancy?Sex is safe if you do not have any complications such as placenta previa, vaginal bleeding, cervical incompetence, preterm labor, risk of preterm labor, or leaking of amniotic fluid. Sex does not increase the risk of complications during pregnancy, but like in the general population, there is a risk of sexually transmitted diseases during pregnancy. During pregnancy, the vaginal circulation is increased, and the cervix is more sensitive, so may have scant vaginal bleeding during intercourse but if the bleeding is heavy, patients should be evaluated. Conclusion: Now we conclude our episode number 111 “Pregnancy FAQ.” Dr. Urso explained that pregnancy is one of the most exciting moments in a woman's life. Special care is needed to make sure both mother and baby are healthy and safe during this special time. Appropriate vitamin supplementation, a nutritious diet, adequate exercise, and avoiding alcohol are key elements of prenatal care. We were reminded that sex is generally safe in uncomplicated pregnancies. This week we thank Hector Arreaza, Carmen Urso, Gagan Kooner, and Arianna Lundquist. Inadequate vitamin intake linked with insulin resistance University of Alabama, May 2 2022.    A greater risk of insulin resistance was revealed among women with acceptable calorie consumption whose folate and vitamin C intake were below the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) values in a study reported  in Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases. Adequate dietary intakes of essential micronutrients are critical to prevent the development of insulin resistance and insulin resistance-related diseases. However, since excess calorie intake linked with obesity is also associated with those diseases, it is important to meet the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of those micronutrients without exceeding recommended daily calorie intakes. Among women whose calorie intake was categorized as acceptable and who met the Food and Nutrition Board's DRI of folate and vitamin C, the respective risks of insulin resistance were 59% and 66% lower than women who did not meet the DRIs. The study also showed that even with the consumption of over the recommended calorie intake, only 2% of women met the DRI of vitamin D and approximately only 30% met the DRIs of vitamins A and E, further emphasizing the fact that a significant proportion of women consume calorie-dense food rather than micronutrient-dense food.”   (NEXT)   Ingesting soy protein may ease severity of inflammatory bowel disease   Penn State University, April 26, 2022   A diet supplemented with soy protein may be an effective adjunct therapy for inflammatory bowel diseases, Penn State researchers reported after completing a study that included mice and cultured human colon cells. The findings are significant because inflammatory bowel diseases -- including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease -- are characterized by either continuous or periodic inflammation of the colon and represent a significant risk factor for colon cancer. The team found that soy-protein concentrate can exert antioxidant and cytoprotective effects in cultured human bowel cells and can moderate the severity of inflammation in mice that have an induced condition similar to ulcerative colitis. Researchers, substituted soy-protein concentrate into the diet of the mice and removed corresponding amounts of the other protein sources, equaling about 12 percent. They kept human equivalents in mind as they determined the amount. The dietary soy-protein concentrate at the 12-percent dose level ameliorated body-weight loss and swelling of the spleen in the mice with induced inflammatory bowel disease. Soy-protein concentrate mitigates markers of colonic inflammation and loss of gut barrier function in the mice with induced IBD.   (NEXT)   Study finds children with vegetarian diet have similar growth and nutrition compared to children who eat meat   St. Michael's Hospital (Toronto), May 2, 2022   A study of nearly 9,000 children found those who eat a vegetarian diet had similar measures of growth and nutrition compared to children who eat meat. The study, published in Pediatrics and led by researchers at St. Michael's Hospital of Unity Health Toronto, also found that children with a vegetarian diet had higher odds of underweight weight status, emphasizing the need for special care when planning the diets of vegetarian kids. The findings come as a shift to consuming a plant-based diet grows in Canada. In 2019, updates to Canada's Food Guide urged Canadians to embrace plant-based proteins, such as beans and tofu, instead of meat. Researchers found children who had a vegetarian diet had similar mean body mass index (BMI), height, iron, vitamin D, and cholesterol levels compared to those who consumed meat. The findings showed evidence that children with a vegetarian diet had almost two-fold higher odds of having underweight, which is defined as below the third percentile for BMI. There was no evidence of an association with overweight or obesity. Underweight is an indicator of undernutrition, and may be a sign that the quality of the child's diet is not meeting the child's nutritional needs to support normal growth. For children who eat a vegetarian diet, the researchers emphasized access to healthcare providers who can provide growth monitoring, education and guidance to support their growth and nutrition.   (NEXT)   Blackcurrant extract triggers same process as statin drugs   University of Connecticut , April 29, 2022   Polyphenol-rich blackcurrant extract may prevent metabolic dysfunctions induced by diets high in fat and cholesterol, according to research in mice.   The results, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, found the extract reduced the percentage of mice with diet-induced severe steatosis (fatty liver), hypercholesterolaemia and hyperglycaemia.  Total plasma cholesterol and glucose levels were significantly lower in the blackcurrant group compared to the control, yet plasma triglyceride (TAG) level were not significantly different.   The extract contained 25% anthocyanins and 40% polyphenols and the dose equated to a daily human consumption of about 540 mg of the extract and 135 mg anthocyanins.   The researchers said such an ingredient could help reduce disease risk since dyslipidaemia and hyperglycaemia were likely to contribute to metabolic diseases.   Videos:   .  Profound Blood Clots in Major Arteries: Dr. McCullough and Chris Gillespie ( 3 Clips on One page)   Over 17,000 Physicians and Scientists Agree: “There Is No Medical Emergency” – Dr. Robert Malone

While we often assume that being overweight is a sign of being unhealthy, we rarely think that someone who is thin can be out of shape. With the current obesity epidemic in the United States, it is worth asking the question, "Can I be fat and healthy?" but a better question might be, what does healthy look like?Tweet us your questions @jeanlucneptune or @marklewismd or email us at isitserious@offscrip.com or call us at 855-283-4666.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
