Michael Straughan was 23 stone and nearly two metres tall, so he was certainly conspicuous. But on the 18th of June 1992 he was seen waiting for a friend outside a pub in Newcastle City Centre... and he hasn't been seen since. In June 2005, Janet Brown spent the day working as an extra on a TV show being filmed in Northumberland called “Distant Shores”. She too would never be seen again. Although it did take the police five years to notice she was missing. We are also joined by Caprice from The Unseen for a discussion about the disappearance of Manic Street Preachers lyricist and guitarist Richie Edwards in February 1995.We also reminisce about terrifying school days. Claire gets an encyclopaedia thrown at her face. John witnesses an assembly being sabotaged by disaffected teachers. Gareth shoehorns in a callback to a nineties Jasper Carrot and Robert Powell sitcom .  We also learn the best thing “marquee related” Gareth has ever seen. Make sure to check out The Unseen in all the usual places, which Caprice has helpfully consolidated hereYou can reach us on email everyonediesinsunderland@gmail.com, on Twitter at @everyonediespod, on Facebook and Instagram. Our theme music is usually the song “Steady Away” by Pete Dilley and can be found on his album Half-truths and Hearsay which you can/should buy/stream here: ttps://petedilley.bandcamp.com/album/half-truths-and-hearsay  But for a second show in a row it isn't. “If you dare to be different, good faith considerate, you're the idiot”

In 2004 the band won three Brit Awards: Best British Group, Best British Rock Act, and Best British Album. After extensive touring in support of their debut album, Poullain left the band in 2005, and was replaced by former guitar technician Richie Edwards. The band's second studio album, One Way Ticket to Hell... and Back, was released in November 2005. The following year, Justin Hawkins departed from the band after successfully completing a course of rehabilitation from alcohol and cocaine abuse.] As a result, the remaining members formed Stone Gods, and continued to perform and record without Hawkins, who subsequently fronted his own project, Hot Leg.On 15 March 2011, The Darkness announced reunion shows, with original bassist Frankie Poullain, including Download Festival 2011, and the Isle of Wight Festival 2012. Their third album, Hot Cakes, was released on 20 August 2012. In 2015 a fourth studio album was announced, entitled Last of Our Kind, which was released on 2 June 2015. A fifth album, Pinewood Smile, was released on 6 October 2017 and one year later on 15 June 2018 a live album, Live at Hammersmith, was also released. Their sixth studio album, Easter Is Cancelled was released on 4 October 2019. After the Coronavirus pandemic put a stop to their world tour in 2020, the band wound up the year with a one-off streamed live show titled "Streaming of a White Christmas", which was also recorded as a new live album and slated to be released on CD and vinyl in June 2021. On 4 June 2021, the band announced their seventh studio album Motorheart would be released on 15 October 2021 with an extensive UK tour through November and December 2021. Dear Diary, Today is February 1st and something happened on this day in music history that’s a real mystery. On January 31st, Richie Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers checked into the Embassy Hotel with bandmate James Dean Bradfield for their upcoming trip to the United States. This trip was big. The band was already popular in Britain, so touring the United States would definitely bump up their visibility to the next level. Although the tour dates were scheduled later in February, Richie and Bradfield were going to head out early to promote their latest album and the upcoming tour. But the flight and tour would never happen.Because on Wednesday, February 1st, 1995, Richie Edwards checked out of Room 561 and was never seen again.

When he was just 27 years old, on February 1, 1995 he mysteriously disspaered and has never been seen again. He was good friends with Manic's bassist, Nicky Wire and initially served as the band's driver and roadie. Soon he began helping out in writing the band's lyrics and eventually began playing rhythm guitar. For the band's album "Holy Bible," it's said Edwards himself wrote the majority of the lyrics on it. Even though he wasn't the most talented of musicians, he had a major contribution in the direction of the band's sound. He gained notoriety on May 15, 1991, when he argued with NME journalist, Steve Lamacq, about the band's values and authenticity. Apparently, Steve questioned Edwards on whether or not he was really serious about his art. Edwards responded by pulling out a razor and carving the words "4 REAL" into his forearm. #2 Menger Hotel Before the Menger Hotel was even erected, the site where it would stand was already filled with a rich history. It was in the same area where the famous Battle of the Alamo came to pass in San Antonio Texas. In the 1840s, a 21-year old German immigrant named William A. Menger started to make a name for himself in the area. In a short amount of time, he acquired various breweries and officially gaining the nickname of "Beer King." He went on to marry boarding house proprietress, Mary Guenther and together they transformed the boarding house into the Menger Hotel. By 1859, the Hotel opened for business. It was a beautiful two-story building that was elegant and classy both inside and out. Merger even built an underground tunnel from the hotel that lead straight to his brewery so he could provide an easy access tour to his guests. The Hotel was such a success that just three months of its initial opening, the couple decided to expand it even further and double up the number of rooms from 50 to 100.

FeedBack w. Wes Nyle. EP17. The Darkness. 06.29.12 The sound and feel of Eighties Glam Rock is seldom recreated successfully by new artists.  Probably because not many can understand how being under the influence of alcohol, heroin, and cocaine, while wearing a neon colored cat suit, or a furry corset ever attracted anyone, or was labeled as a good or even a decent business model. In 2000 brothers Justin and Dan Hawkins discovered what may have been a hidden talent while in a Karaoke bar as Justin sang Bohemian Rhapsody, on New Year’s Eve.  His voice and stage presence was enough to make them drop the current act they were in called Empire and peruse what we now know as The Darkness. In 2003 the group would debut with the album Permission to Land.  The album went quadruple platinum in their homeland the United Kingdom and yielded their best known material, I Believe In A Thing Called Love, Love Is Only A Feeling, and Get Your Hands Off Of My Woman.Being a roadie has its perks, even if it’s short lived.  While on tour for their sophomore release One Way Ticket to Hell… And Back, Frankie Poullain had left the band and was replaced by the bands guitar technician Richie Edwards.  A year later Justin would leave the band and enter rehab program. The surviving members would tour as a band named Stoned Gods. The future of this group playing as The Darkness was growing more uncertain. Once Justin had completed his treatment he started his own project known as Hot Leg.Earlier this year the band came out of hiding with a new single titled Nothin’s Gonna Stop Us. The video for this single stays true to the bands British roots with a cartoon video reminiscent to the Beatles 1968 film Yellow Submarine. The band’s first album in almost 7 years, Hot Cakes, is slated for a late August release and on June 25th their 2nd single from what will be their 3rd album was available for free streaming on Spin.com. It’s called Everybody Have a Good Time and highlights classic work from the glam quartet as they welcome back original bassist Frankie. This is The Darkness.Tracks Heard In This Podcast: Giving Up I Believe In A Thing Called Love Get Your Hands Off Of My Woman One Way Ticket To Hell And Back Nothin’s Gonna Stop Us Everybody Have a Good Time
