This week, we received our annual audit visit from corporate! That's right, The Chairman not only graced us with his presence, but he demanded we deliver to you this episode: “Grave Mistake: BÖC Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. One could argue that selling 24M albums would negate “Shoulda Been Huge” treatment. However, when most folks can only name 3 songs by this band, and one of them is due to an SNL skit, we think they fit the bill. This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category; however, there is a strong case to be made that they've been largely forgotten as innovators and architects of what we know as heavy metal. We think they should be remembered as titans of hard rock and metal! Hope ya dig!Songs this week include:Blue Öyster Cult - “Transmaniacon MC” from Blue Öyster Cult(1972)Blue Öyster Cult - “The Red & The Black” from Tyranny And Mutation (1973)Blue Öyster Cult - “Flaming Telepaths” from Secret Treaties (1974)Blue Öyster Cult - “Tenderloin” from Agents Of Fortune (1976)Blue Öyster Cult - “R.U. Happy Holidays to all of our ‘Scurians out there. Due to the abundance of amazing new releases in the world of rock n' punk n' metal, we will forego our annual Christmas episode for a 2-parter Shallow Graves 2024! This week: the 2nd in a newer series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare obscure bands to a mainstream act. This is not about copycats or copybats, but more so about artists that have similar vibes to a band who has become synonymous with Gothtober; the one and only TYPE O NEGATIVE! Join us as we discover other bands who were influenced and inspired by TYPE O's gothic metal greatness. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This is not a statement about bands trying to copy one another, but more that they have a shared sound and vision. After recovering from a life-threatening sickness, JH Williams III embarked on an art journey that ended up with the creation of something familiar but almost entirely new, Dracula: A Storybook Portfolio. The book is 50 individual art pieces drawn to illustrate the novel Dracula in a way that only JH could deliver. We had the chance to sit down and discuss the project at length which you can listen to here. Dracula and vampires as a whole were never my cup of tea until the past few years when I finally committed to prying open the coffin to get into the monster that so many people adore. This version of Dracula is what I think I needed to solidify my love of the monster. JH Williams careful craftsmanship of the story with full-page art mirrored by condensed text pages deliver one of the best ways to celebrate the vampire so many adore. There are so many pages in this book that I lingered on because the scene was so captivating as the powers that vampires themselves possess. There is a level of mastery in this book that is handcrafted by one person that is unlike anything else. Dracula: A Storybook Portfolio feels like a showcase for Williams to show off what he can do beyond just his art. The lettering in this book is done by him as well, with a few small uses of breaking the form that is so effective for a small tweak of placement. This is one book you need to pick up to have on your shelf because it uses the format of the graphic novel to experiment with more of a storybook-type retelling of the story. It's simply one of my newest favorite books. Getting to see a master at play with full-page spreads with each flip is worth every penny.

I Want You (7 inch Version)”. TRACKLIST: 01 - Nitzer Ebb - Let Your Body Learn (Instrumental Slow Version) 02 - A Split Second - Flesh (Slow Belgium Version) 03 - Cabaret Voltaire - Yashar (John Robie Mix 1) 04 - Liaisons Dangereuses - Los Niños Del Parque 05 - Nitzer Ebb - Warsaw Ghetto (Original 12 Mix) 06 - Fad Gadget - Lady Shave 07 - Grauzone - Eisbär 08 - Robotiko Rejekto - Rejekto (Presentation Mix) 09 - Bigod 20 - America 10 - Front 242 - Headhunter 11 - Alien Sex Fiend - Under The Thunder (Ignore The Dub) 12 - D.A.F. - Der Mussolini 13 - Cabaret Voltaire - I Want You (7 inch Version) 14 - D.A.F.

TRACKLIST: 01 - The Woodentops - Give It Time (Adrian Sherwood Mix) 02 - Simple Minds - Someone Somewhere In Summertime (Extended) 03 - The Mission - Tower of Strength (Bombay Mix Edit) 04 - The Waterboys - The Whole of the Moon 05 - Fiction Factory - (Feels Like) Heaven (12inch Version) 06 - Gene Loves Jezebel - The Motion of Love (Jezebel Mix) 07 - Tears For Fears - Pale Shelter (New Extended Version) 08 - The Bolshoi - A Way (Un-Edited Version - Live Length) 09 - The Psychedelic Furs - Heartbreak Beat (Extended Mix) 10 - U2 - The Unforgettable Fire 11 - The Cure - Lovesong (Extended Mix) 12 - Peter Murphy - Indigo Eyes (Single Edit) 13 - Echo & The Bunnymen - The Game

TRACKLIST: 01 - Siouxsie and the Banshees - Cities in Dust (12'' Eruption Mix) 02 - The Cult - (Here Comes The) Rain 03 - Echo & The Bunnymen - Lips Like Sugar (Maxi Mix) 04 - Gene Loves Jezebel - Desire (12" Remix) 05 - The Bolshoi - Please (12' Single Mix) 06 - The Sisters Of Mercy - Lucretia My Reflection (Extended Remix) 07 - The Psychedelic Furs - Pretty In Pink (Berlin Mix) 08 - The Lords Of The New Church - Dance With Me 09 - Peter Murphy - All Night Long (Single Edit) 10 - The Mission - Wasteland (Anniversary Mix) 11 - Iggy Pop - Cry For Love (Extended Dance Version) 12 - U2 - Two Hearts Beat as One (Club Version) 13 - The Cure - A Forest

Episode 176 features the Washington D.C. based dark wave goth band Neuro Farm. They draw their influences from Radiohead, Joy Division, Nine Inch Nails, and Chelsea Wolf among others. In the interview I spoke with Brian & Rebecca who are both vocalists and songwriters in the band. They play guitar and violin respectively. They also happen to both be neuroscientists so we talked fairly extensively about that as well as their music. I featured Neuro Farms latest release which is a cover called “New Dawn Fades” by Joy Division as well as one of their originals called “Midnight Massacre.” If you like their stuff you can find it wherever you stream or listen to music. Links below.  https://www.theneurofarm.com/ https://www.facebook.com/theneurofarm/ https://theneurofarm.bandcamp.com/ https://www.instagram.com/theneurofarm/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/5wGa28EueXw29z19OvEq0T   -- Podcast merch is available on Shopify.
