Romanticism or misogyny? During the tectonic time of “Me Too” The Splendid Bohemians tackled the subjects of two artists inextricably linked to their romantic images: Sir Tom Jones and Charles Aznavour - both hugely popular and successful in their own times, but, like many with complicated artistic careers, coming under reexamination.Spurred by a demand made to my wife to “shut off that stuff” by two disgruntled women while she was enjoying a Tom Jones CD, Bill and Rich set out to dissect the difference between romance and chauvinism when considering these cherished icons during this retributive age of Epstein, Trump, Cosby, Weinstein, et al. Seems like a good time to replay this nugget from 2016. The list of predators is long and keeps growing, as evidenced by the recent resignation of democratic Gubernatorial hopeful, Eric Swallwell. So, we batted around the evergreen question of “can you hate the artist, but still love the art?” We ended up with no answers, just more questions.
“You gotta have faith,” George Michael sang a long time ago. Given the unfortunate fate that befell that conflicted artist, it's worth taking a moment to reflect upon how hard it is to find inner peace, and make a commitment to whatever faith you still possess during this Christmas season. Life is very complicated right now and holding on to love, practicing gratitude, and radiating good intentions will help to get us through these dark days. We here at The Hotel Bohemia want to gift you a holiday sampler chock full of savory contradictions and sweet mysteries, delivered by Jan and Dean, Tom Jones, and Evil Wiener. Since Xmas celebrates the birth of the redeemer, and the gift Christ offered to the world, the three songs lined up today trace the arc of his sacrifice and our crisis of faith: The Annunciation (Jan & Dean); the Crucifixion (Tom Jones); and, finally, the Resurrection (Evil Wiener)The Annunciation (T.A.M.I Show Theme: Jan and Dean)Jan and Dean, like two sun-kissed Angels, announce to the world that a youthful era of optimism has begun. Rock and Roll will save the world, they proclaim, and, we, the youth believed it. In the T.A.M.I. show theme song you can feel the exuberance of their faith. Two years later, Jan Berry almost dies from a car crash, and today the Boomers are rapidly going down in shameful flames, but in this time capsule from 1964 none of that is on the horizon- it's all smooth sailing ahead. The Crucifixion (Charlie Darwin: Tom Jones)Here the smooth sailing is over, and the all encompassing ocean is overwhelming a ship's crew - they are drowning. From out of the God given pipes of Sir Tom Jones, a prayer goes out - but to whom? There is a deep crisis of faith portrayed here in mysterious utterances. Does Charlie Darwin represent an irreconcilable conflict between natural selection and charity? Did he try to tell us something that we weren't ready to hear? That Survival of the Fittest must doom us? Just as Jesus cried out on the cross, “why have you forsaken me?” The crew here is also expressing a crisis of faith. Or, is there a conflict at all? In the end faith is all they have. They are crying out to God as the water consumes them. The Resurrection (All Over the World: Evil Wiener)Bill McCormick, aka Billy Sugarfix, aka Evil Weiner may have had some doubts about the existence of Santa Claus, (and by extension, the Savior), but he's returned to the fold of the faithful. From the special edition EP from 1993 on the Flavor-Contra label, here is Evil Wiener's goofy recommitment to his faith - and a joy filled Birthday Greeting to Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas everybody!

As a voice and public speaking coach, I believe your voice is your most powerful tool—whether you're speaking or singing. The key difference lies not in the voice itself but in how we shape it. This understanding led me to an early revelation: the techniques I used to help singers could be seamlessly applied to enhance speaking skills. Over the past decade, I've helped individuals from all walks of life—ranging from first-time public speakers to X Factor auditionees—develop their voices and achieve their goals. From improving vocal range and projection to overcoming performance anxiety, I've found the journey transformative and the results empowering. Today, I specialise in helping business leaders, entrepreneurs, and teams communicate with clarity, confidence, and presence. Through my Cannon Method, I focus on three essential pillars: - *Voice*: Master vocal techniques like projection, articulation, and resonance, ensuring your words carry authority.- *Confidence*: Build unshakeable self-assurance with proven strategies to overcome anxiety and stay focused under pressure.- *Presence*: Command the room with engaging non-verbal communication—eye contact, posture, and energy that captivates your audience. Before coaching, I spent my career as a singer and saxophonist, performing alongside icons like Sir Tom Jones and Roger Taylor from Queen. Those years taught me the art of sustaining audience engagement through passion, precision, and vocal reliability. Now, I use those same principles to help you optimise your vocal performance. Whether you're leading high-stakes meetings, delivering compelling presentations, or striving to communicate more confidently, I'll guide you to develop a strong, impactful voice that amplifies your message.

She's Everyone's Favourite Granny and if you've been on line in the last few months—and who hasn't?—you probably saw her performance on The Voice UK. Earlier this year she became the show's oldest contestant ever when she did her rendition of The Sugarhill Gang's, Rapper's Delight in an effort to get coaches Sir Tom Jones, Will.i.am, LeAnn Rimes and Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones to turn their chairs. She became a sensation, and she joins me today top talk about being on the show, doing a duet to Black Eyed Peas, I Gotta Feeling, with the song's writer Will.i.am and her new Christmas single “Grandma's Christmas Escape.” Then, we'll take a deep dive into Christmas horror stories with author Joshua Millican. Over the past decade-plus, Millican has proven himself to be a horror expert of the highest caliber. He is one of the genre's premiere journalists, and today we'll talk about the best Christmas horror movies and his two new books, “All Through the House: The Novelization” and “Chopping Mall: The Novelization.” Finally, I'll share my conversation with one of the world's most successful music stars, Robbie Williams. He found fame as a member of the pop group Take That from 1990 to 1995, launching his mega successful solo career in 1996. By 2008, he had sold more albums in the UK than any other British solo artist in history and right now his record sales stand at over 77 million worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time, and now his wide ride to fame has been captured in a new movie called Better Man, which comes to select theatres on Christmas Day before opening wide on January 10.

All this week on the programme we are looking at the topic of loneliness. Women are statistically more likely to be lonely and so in today's programme we will look at ways to cope with those feelings and if it's possible to reframe them. Anita is joined by Radio 4's All in the Mind presenter Claudia Hammond and author of Alonement, Francesca Specter. The comedian Nicole Travolta is taking her one-woman show Doing Alright to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. When she is not dressed up in a wig doing impressions, she can also be found performing comedy around LA. The children's charity NSPCC says that its Helpline received over one thousand contacts last year about children experiencing coercive and controlling behaviour, a form of domestic abuse. The school summer holidays can be a particularly difficult time for some of these children. If you are worried about someone, what should you do? Anita is joined by Paddi Vint, Development Manager for the NSPCC and a woman we call Margaret, who experienced coercive control in a previous relationship. The Cuban-Spanish singer-songwriter Lucy Calcines joins Anita to sing live, ahead of her headline performance at the UK's largest Latin music and dance festival this weekend. She shot to fame after her appearance on the Voice TV show in 2020, when she achieved a four chair turn by superstar coaches Meghan Trainor, Sir Tom Jones, Olly Murs and will.i.am. Anita will also be joined by the festival organiser, Amaranta Wright, to talk about all things Latin. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Rebecca Myatt Studio manager: Bob Nettles

Bradley Walsh is a familiar face to many millions of TV viewers, as the host of quiz shows including The Chase and Blankety-Blank, and as an actor in dramas such as Doctor Who and The Larkins. Bradley was born in Watford and after leaving school at 16 he was apprenticed to the local Rolls-Royce factory as a jet engineer. A keen footballer, he signed to Brentford FC when he was 19 but his career was cut short by injury after only two seasons with the club. He dealt with this blow by turning his attention to the entertainment business. He worked as a Pontin's bluecoat and then tried his luck as a stand-up comedian - doing impressions and telling jokes at working men's clubs. In 1986 he turned professional, and his first booking was a stint at the Pavilion Theatre on Cromer Pier. Later he became the support act for performers including Dame Shirley Bassey, Leo Sayer and Sir Tom Jones. In 1997 he hosted the quiz show Wheel of Fortune and three years later got his first acting role in the Channel 4 series Lock Stock….a spin-off from Guy Ritchie's 1998 feature film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. He followed this up with roles in Coronation Street, Law & Order: UK and Doctor Who Bradley released his debut album Chasing Dreams, featuring his interpretations of popular standards, in 2016. In that year it became the biggest-selling debut album by a British artist. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey welcomes back Vidar Hjarding MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands to re-start his regular Connect Radio audio described theatre reviews with his first visit back to a live theatre performance in almost 2 years. Vidar's first trip back to the theatre was to see the audio described performance of ‘What's New Pussycat' at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre on Wednesday 10 November at 7.30pm with live audio description by Julia Grundy and Caroline Smith. What's New Pussycat is a musical, comedy theatre production Written by Tony Award winning, Joe Di Pietro which marries the classic Henry Fielding novel The History of Tom Jones. and the iconic songs of Sir Tom Jones, to relive the delicious excess of London's in the swinging sixties. Set in 1965, ladies' man Tom Jones arrives in London with a broken heart, but he also has big dreams and a big voice. He quickly discovers an exciting world of mods and miniskirts, dancing and decadence, but most of all…incredible music. Romance and adventure await, but will Tom ever be reunited with his one true love, who seems more interested in designing for Carnaby Street than in being Mrs. Tom Jones? Vidar began by explaining to Toby what it was like for him going back to the Birmingham Rep in almost 2 years and the joy of being back in the theatre seeing a live audio described show. If the rumours are true that What's New Pussycat will be hitting the London West End stage in 2022, then Vidar would certainly recommend going to see an audio described performance of the production for a trip to London's West End. Welcome to summer 2006! And things were, indeed, Crazy. That top selling nine-week run at No1 was significant for not just featuring (the not crime fighting rodent) Dangermouse but for being the first UK chart topper to make it there purely on downloads (remember them?) alone. But of course, you knew that chart fact already, didn't you, pop pickers? But there is so much more to rediscover on NOW 64, as we dive back amongst those shiny cover surf boards to ride the crest of this noughties pop wave. Classic Pop writer, journalist and all-round (indie) pop kid John Earls guides us through the hits and otherwise across these two CDs. Where to begin? There's the solid gold pop classics thanks to Nelly Furtardo, Lily Allen, Sugababes and Rihanna; those young cavalier guitar heroes (can we say indie?) The Kooks, Razorlight and The Zutons, and a plethora (the correct collective noun) of outrageous dance covers that certainly signalled that the eighties were back! What was going on? Ask James Morrison – whilst stuck at the end of CD2, he was quietly inventing the next decade! As Top of The Pops turned off the lights for the final time, the singles charts were undergoing some strange times for sure. Could those CD singles (and B-sides!) really be on their way out too?And don't forget the all-conquering celebrity Big Brother winner Preston and the Ordinary Boys (and Lady Sovereign!) Could there BE a more 2006 sentence? Also starring P!nk, Keane, (Sir) Tom Jones, the ‘efficient' Will.I.Am, Izzy from Neighbours (thanks to Elvis Costello!) and (very briefly, thankfully) Matt Willis and Fall Out Boy. We even find time to chat Blossoms/Rick Astley! How on earth did we get there, I hear you (possibly) ask? Tune in to find out!And finally, discover why Shapeshifters (but not Nile Rodgers) won't be returning our Christmas cards.Phew! Trust us, there is a lot more to summer 2006 and NOW 64 than you may think. Dive back in! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Starting a petition to get Sir Tom Jones sent in as a bombshell for Liam...Yasmin Evans and Nick Bright are in the driving seats of the podcast today while Kem and Arielle are away. Are they the coolest supply teacher duo ever? Most definitely. Can they help Kem and Arielle understand what the NVQ system really means? Absolutely not. Ok, we're gonna cautiously say that everything seems, like, really happy and settled in the vill- oh, wait there's been a bombshell sent in there to shake everything up, never mind. The peace and quiet never lasts for long in there... Although - there wasn't much peace and quiet in the bedroom last night. Is that a round of applause we can hear? Aw - it's nice to know that everyone's cheering each other on. GET THOSE NVQS! Last night we saw our boys compete in the Sex Gods challenge - whether you loved or hated those lil gold pants, we can all agree that seeing Jake stuck in the lava was *priceless*. It's just a bit of cornflour, babe! Got a life dilemma that needs solving? Well, Olivia Attwood is your woman - get your emails in to us on themorningafter@itv.com and we could get her to solve your problem right here on the podcast. We're biased, but her advice is ALWAYS on point. Right, off to the bank to see if we can get a Business Loan to start up a sweet treats brunch place - a menu of grapes, fizzy sweets and unpeeled carrots jammed in some hummus. Who wouldn't want to invest in that?!

The UK's favourite fitness coach is back with series two of his podcast. This summer, Joe will be speaking to inspirational friends and some of his favourite people to ask them what they do to keep themselves feeling mentally and physically strong in the face of life's little challenges. It might be going for a new personal best on the running machine or cosying up with a good book; every guest will share the one thing that works for them in the hope it might inspire you to try something new. Sir Tom Jones' career in pop and show business has spanned seven decades with 100 million record sales to his name. Now aged 80, he's still releasing music and preparing to perform live in the summer. In their conversation, Joe hears Sir Tom's 'fairy tale' story from singing at his cousin's weddings in the valleys of South Wales, to meeting Elvis in LA and performing in Vegas. Tom speaks candidly about losing his wife Linda in 2016 and how exercising in the gym and therapy helped him come through his grief. He describes how performing live to his fans helped him get back on his feet, and how a daily dose of 'inversion therapy' keeps him feeling strong. This is sunshine in a podcast. Joe Wicks is here for you, and he won't stop until you're fit and happy. Producer: Clare Salisbury Editor: Dimitri Houtart A BBC Audio Bristol production for Radio 4

Buckingham palace has appealed to the world's media not to publish unauthorised images of Prince George. It says some paparazzi have gone to, "extreme lengths" to take pictures and, "a line has been crossed". The palace said a small number of media organisations, mostly in Germany, France, Australia, New Zealand and the US, had published photos of Prince George in "unacceptable circumstances". However it said the "vast majority", and all UK publications, had refused. Are the Palace trying to re-draw the lines of what is acceptable intrusion? Steve Hewlett hears from Robert Jobson, Evening Standard Royal Editor, and Ken Wharfe, former Scotland Yard Protection Officer to Diana, the Princess of Wales and Prince William.Sir Tom Jones has criticised the BBC after being told he would not be returning to The Voice. After four series as coach on the talent show, it's been announced he will be replaced by Boy George. Sir Tom took to Facebook to criticise BBC executives about their, "sub-standard behaviour", in the way he was told, with "no consultation or conversation of any kind". The incident has raised questions about the way media organisations, like the BBC, handle top talent. Steve discusses with two leading agents; Sue Ayton from Knight Ayton Management and Jon Thoday Joint Founder and MD of Avalon.Archant, the fifth largest regional newspaper publisher in the UK, with titles in East Anglia, London, Kent and the South West, has reported its first revenue and profit growth in eight years. Kirsty Young's castaway is the singer Sir Tom Jones. In a career spanning fifty years he's sold 150 million albums and his hits have included It's Not Unusual, What's New Pussycat? and Delilah. As a child it was assumed he'd follow in his father's footsteps and become a miner. But he developed TB when he was twelve and doctors warned his parents against sending their only son to the pit; they said his lungs were too weak. Now aged seventy, he has no plans to retire. "Singing's like breathing to me", he says, "my voice drives me, it tells me that I have to do it".
