Ieva's family left Latvia as the German army was retreating in the face of the surging Red Army forces, in what proved to be a dramatic journey. They would eventually land in a refugee camp in Germany, and then it was a 6 year wait before they were accepted as migrants to Australia. It was not their first choice as they had wanted to follow other family members to USA or Canada. Like many war refugees, family members became separated across the globe. Between 1947 and 1952 around 20,000 Latvians would migrate to Australia, making them amongst some of the earliest new post-war migrants to settle from post-war Europe. Like many Latvians, Ieva's family would eventually settle in Adelaide, and later she would marry a fellow Latvian living in Tasmania, and she has lived in Hobart for the last 60 years. Ieva only returned to Latvia for the first time in 1990, as a part of an Australian Latvian choir invited to a cultural festival, at a time when the country was on the verge of independence. She was also the President of the Tasmanian Latvian Association for 35 years and has actively tried to maintain some Latvian traditions and language. Like many Latvian migrant communities around the world, traditions of Latvian choral singing have been kept alive, though maintaining many traditions with a small community is a big challenge.

You are very right, it is wonderful to be more involved in the community and help spread the fun and the joy of Celtic music and other aspects of the culture. And to think it all started 17 years ago when a friend told me about something called renaissance festivals. Celtic Pittsburgh is growing. My wife and son have joined in, as well as a friend. We had tables at the Pittsburgh Irish Festival, and the Ligonier Highland Games. Thanks to those events we have many more subscribers on our Facebook page, and I have learned about other events and other musicians and bands I had not heard of before. I have attached a few photos. The Irish festival was held on the site of an old steel mill in Rankin, Pa, just outside of Pittsburgh. In one photo, Sue Borowski's group, RichPatrick, can be seen performing at the Ligonier Highland Games. On Labor Day weekend, Sue and I were interviewed on the radio! It was an "I can't believe I am doing this" moment. If you care to have a listen, here is the link. Again, thank you! Woodland Folk sent some photos in September

Marjie Kennedy replied to the Celtic Music Magazine feedback request: "I wanted to let you know that on March 17th I will be at the Hibernian parade in the Dogtown neighborhood of St. Louis Missouri.  St. Louis has two parades each year because the Dogtown one is on March 17 every year, and the downtown St. Louis one is always the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day (unless the 17th falls on a Saturday, in which case I think they end up both being the same day). I will listen to your podcasts either before or after those festivities. And this past Sunday, March 12, I celebrated by including some Celtic music and other Irish tunes on the radio program that I host on KDHX.org called Lotsa A Cappella. Thanks for all you do for Celtic music!" Tera Bochik replied: "I'm usually driving around doing my patrol rounds as a security guard. Unfortunately I have to work on St. Patrick's day. (Missing the First Annual 20th World's Shortest St. Patrick's Day parade in Hot Springs, AR.) I celebrate by listening and sharing about the podcast to anyone who asks what I'm listening to." Von Rothenberger replied from Lucas, Kansas: "Happy Birthday! Erin Go Braugh! Thank you for all that you do." Rick Cunningham of Boxing Robin replied: "Hello Marc, Many thanks for including Boxing Robin on Vol 2 of the St. Patrick's Day podcast! Have fun at the gig tonight -  we're playing 80 miles away but at least it's a fairly early gig! All the best. Tom McHugh sent a photo: "Hello Marc, One of the things I like to do while listening is make pens. The first picture is a Celtic - themed ballpoint pen I recently completed. The second picture is what two pens I recently made looked like while they were still on the lathe at our local makerspace. Thanks for making the podcast! I've very must enjoyed listening to all the new music!"

When William C Hammond moved to New Zealand six years ago, he felt he had to bring his nautical fiction series with him too. After 30 years in publishing, Bill embarked on his own writing career in 1998 - creating what's become the Cutler Family Chronicles. It follows the fortunes of a 19th century naval family from Massachusetts - which is also where he hails from. His seventh novel in the series, To Distant Shores, sees his main character Richard Cutler command a US steam frigate on a mission to Sydney. But the ship is wrecked off the North Island's west coast, plunging the remaining crew right in the middle of the conflict that followed the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Bill joins Kathryn to talk about how he ended up in New Zealand, and the research that goes into his novels.

Claire gets an encyclopaedia thrown at her face. John witnesses an assembly being sabotaged by disaffected teachers. Gareth shoehorns in a callback to a nineties Jasper Carrot and Robert Powell sitcom .  We also learn the best thing “marquee related” Gareth has ever seen. Make sure to check out The Unseen in all the usual places, which Caprice has helpfully consolidated hereYou can reach us on email everyonediesinsunderland@gmail.com, on Twitter at @everyonediespod, on Facebook and Instagram. Our theme music is usually the song “Steady Away” by Pete Dilley and can be found on his album Half-truths and Hearsay which you can/should buy/stream here: ttps://petedilley.bandcamp.com/album/half-truths-and-hearsay  But for a second show in a row it isn't. “If you dare to be different, good faith considerate, you're the idiot”

Wrel also gives a campaign health check, explains what's going on with the spawn system, and discusses Planetside's 2022 roadmap including: the merits of a lore codex, Outfit Wars' return as a 1v1 contest on Nexus, and the importance of making NSO outfits whole. “The Europeans raise all the cattle, but the Chinese get all the milk.” This joke, told in colonial Singapore, was indicative of the importance of the Chinese diaspora throughout Southeast Asia. Chinese migrants were miners, laborers, merchants and traders: the foundation of many colonial cities throughout Asia--while also making sure that their own communities back home benefited. Distant Shores: Colonial Encounters on China's Maritime Frontier (Princeton University Press: 2021), written by Professor Melissa Macauley, looks at one particular community within the Chinese diaspora: the Chaozhou people--also known as the “Chiu Chow” people--hailing from the Shantou--also known as Swatou--area in Eastern Guangdong Province. The Chouzhouese traveled far and wide, engaging in trade, commerce and business--a history that survives to this day, with many Southern Chinese and Southeast Asian business tycoons having ties to this migrant community. Professor Melissa Macauley is a Professor at Northwestern University, where she specializes in late imperial and modern Chinese history from 1500 to 1958. Her research focuses on such topics as the interrelated history of southeastern China and Southeast Asia; colonialism and imperialism in East and Southeast Asia; and legal culture in Chinese social history. Her first book, Social Power and Legal Culture: Litigation Masters in Late Imperial China (Stanford University Press: 1998) We're joined in this interview by fellow NBN host Sarah Bramao-Ramos. Sarah is a PHD candidate at Harvard University that studies Qing China. Today, the three of us talk about the Chouzhouese people, and how their trading efforts throughout the region challenges the way we think about “empire” and “colonialism”. Ventures into the skies above our heads may have begun with the Wright Brothers and their rudimentary attempts at flight, but within decades those initial crude experiments evolved into sophisticated spacecraft that could not only take humankind soaring only into the skies, but well beyond. Indeed, by the 1960s the future for humankind seemed clearly to be destined for space, and eventually the colonization of near and distant planets. And as we gained in our understanding of spaceflight, and as our ever more powerful telescopes could peer farther and farther into the great expanse of the so-called Final Frontier of outer space, we began to wonder aloud about how long it would be before we would discover other civilizations, perhaps now travelling the stars as we hoped to do in the decades to come. And yet, no matter where we looked, and no matter how far we looked, it seemed that, while every nook and cranny of that great expanse was filled with dazzling displays of starry splendor, life -- that is, sophisticated, non-human, alien life, was nowhere to be found. Even something as primitive as bacteria remained elusive. This of course, led to the obvious question: where was all the life we assumed was out there? If there were plenty of planets in so-called habitable zones, as all of our growing body of data seemed to suggest, why weren't we discovering life? Why weren't we picking up the transmissions of distant civilizations with our ever more powerful and far-reaching sensors and telescopes? This conundrum is known as the Fermi paradox, which, according to Wikipedia, is states thusly: -The Fermi paradox, named after Italian-American physicist Enrico Fermi, is the apparent contradiction between the lack of evidence for extraterrestrial life and various high estimates for their probability (such as some optimistic estimates for the Drake equation). Now, while this dilemma still troubles many - especially those holding to a more traditional understanding of how life in the Cosmos is likely to have developed over the last several billion years - there are others who have postulated that the reasons are obvious once one really looks at the question in the right way. In other words, the problem lies not in the apparent result, but in the very assumptions we make as to what advanced, non-human life will look like, how it would behave, and where and how we're most likely to find it. Not only do these refreshingly inventive, forward-thinking ways of seeing this issue help us to address the Fermi paradox, but they also open up intriguing possibilities as to how we humans may evolve to the point where we too can follow suit, perhaps finding passage into the fascinating realms these Others may already be existing in. These notions also help those of us intimately involved with a topic such as the UFO Phenomenon to perhaps better understand a truth that we think is staring us in the face: a truth suggesting these Others are not only “out there”, but here, in and around the Earth, and perhaps have been for as long, or longer, than we have. These compelling ideas and the intriguing potential implications they give birth to, are the very matters we'll seek to explore in this, the 45th episode of the Point of Convergence podcast. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pointofconvergence/support

Listen to this one hour in-depth interview with Richard Solomon.    Jeremy Clyde is not just one half of sixties British Invasion duo Chad & Jeremy, he’s also an accomplished actor and songwriter who recently embarked on a one-album-a-year solo project entitled ‘The Bottom Drawer Sessions’. Jeremy takes the stage in a rare solo show to launch the newest installment of The Bottom Drawer Sessions, performing new songs, some Chad & Jeremy classics, and stripped down versions of deep cuts from the psychedelic years. The first of Chad Stuart & Jeremy Clyde's 14 U.S. chart hits was 1963’s "Yesterday's Gone", followed by "A Summer Song", "Willow Weep for Me", "If I Loved You", "Before and After" and more. TV appearances included "Shindig", "Hullabaloo", "The Patty Duke Show", "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "Batman."   Their musical adventure-and evolution-continued with the hits "Distant Shores" and "You Are She" , from late 1966, but they turned a corner with the September 25, 1967 LP release ‘Of Cabbages And Kings". Looking back at the classic album, All Music guide says Chad & Jeremy "were gifted songwriters who could work outside the standard pop framework of the day, and Chad Stuart (who orchestrated the album) was a talented and imaginative arranger who gives the material a sound that's both rich and intimate."   That songwriting gift never left Jeremy Clyde, and through decades of off and on touring with Chad & Jeremy and on and on acting on British television--including "Downton Abbey"-- and the stages of London's West End. Beginning with the 2014 release of "The Bottom Drawer Sessions No. 1", Jeremy Clyde has --with more than 50 sweeping, evocative, inspired recordings- reclaimed the title of ‘songwriter’. He describes the Bottom Drawer sessions as “analog songs for an analog age”. With his 2018 U.S. tour dates - on his own and with Peter Asher - another title, "troubadour" can't be far behind. Special thanks to Jeremy for a wonderful interview.   (Chris Maffei - sound engineer for this recording - thanks Chris!)

Their musical adventure-and evolution-continued with the hits "Distant Shores" and "You Are She," from late 1966, but they turned a corner with the September 25, 1967 LP release ‘Of Cabbages And Kings".Looking back at the classic album, AllMusic guide says Chad & Jeremy "were gifted songwriters who could work outside the standard pop framework of the day, and Chad Stuart (who orchestrated the album) was a talented and imaginative arranger who gives the material a sound that's both rich and intimate." That songwriting gift never left Jeremy Clyde, and through decades of off and on touring with Chad & Jeremy and on and on acting on British television--including "Downton Abbey"-- and the stages of London's West End. Jeremy Clyde is a great guest who provides not only British charm and elegance but great stories! Listen to this one hour in-depth interview with Richard Solomon in advance of Jeremy's performance at My Father's Place at the Roslyn Hotel. (Chris Maffei - sound engineer for this recording - thanks Chris!) Jeremy Clyde is not just one half of sixties British Invasion duo Chad & Jeremy, he’s also an accomplished actor and songwriter who recently embarked on a one-album-a-year solo project entitled ‘The Bottom Drawer Sessions’. In our last +1, we talked about the fact that batting .300 over the course of your Major League Baseball career gets you in the Hall of Fame.   Today we’re going to continue the baseball metaphor.    Pop quiz for baseball fans: You know how many perfect games have EVER been thrown?!    (For those who may not know, a perfect game is defined by Major League Baseball (via Wikipedia) as “a game in which a pitcher (or combination of pitchers) pitches for a victory [in a game] that lasts a minimum of nine innings in which no opposing player reaches base.”)   So… Get this: According to Wikipedia, Major League Baseball has been around for 140 years. Over 210,000 (!) games have been played. And only 23 (!) perfect games have ever been pitched. And… No player has ever thrown more than one perfect game.   140 years. 210,000 (!) games. Only 23 perfect games.    And NO pitcher has ever done it twice.   Yet you and I want to have perfect lives. (Hahahahahhaha!)   I’m also reminded of John Wooden. He was all about GOING for perfection but only doing so KNOWING we’ll never actually get it!   Here’s how he puts it: “Perfection is what you are striving for, but perfection is an impossibility. However, striving for perfection is not an impossibility. Do the best you can under the conditions that exist. That is what counts.”   (Sounds a lot like our Guiding Stars and Distant Shores, eh?)   You know what else Wooden said? This: “When you improve a little each day, eventually big things occur. When you improve conditioning a little each day, eventually you have a big improvement in conditioning. Not tomorrow, not the next day, but eventually a big gain is made. Don’t look for the big, quick improvement. Seek the small improvement one day at a time. That’s the only way it happens—and when it happens, it lasts.”   (Sounds a lot like our Optimize +1s, eh?)   And, one more Wooden gem (all of these are from his book called Wooden, btw): “Did I win? Did I lose? Those are the wrong questions. The correct question is: Did I make my best effort? That’s what matters. The rest of it just gets in the way.”   Today’s +1.    Let’s make our best effort.    Let’s “seek the small improvement one day at a time. That’s the only way it happens—and when it happens, it lasts.”   +1. +1. +1.

Mia & I met them again in Toronto in January where they were excitedly awaiting the launch of their latest boat, a new Southerly 48. We sat down with them between seminars to talk about the design process, how Southerly are now owned by Discovery Yachts in the UK, what they wanted in their new design, and about how they’re getting ready and planning for the next phase of their cruising life by sailing trans-Atlantic and getting ready for the Pacific! On the Wind is presented by Forbes Horton Yachts. And also supported by Weems & Plath, and Broadreach.

In this episode, we feature our trip to the US Sailboat Show in Annapolis, MD.  We have some more adventure sailing news and our products of the week will help you keep your boat fresh and mold free. Intro Chat We are back after an extended break from doing the podcast.  We have been very busy with work, travel and a couple big life events. After we got back from the Annapolis show, we decided to fit in a week long sailing trip in the Florida Keys before year end.  We had a blast and we will feature that trip on a future show. I was able to fix our broken throttle cable on our MacGregor 26M with a  50hp Honda engine.  It was not too difficult, the trickiest part was getting the throttle control out and back in the pedestal as it was a very tight fit.   Here is the cable I bought that has a 4" minimum bend radius to help avoid the wear that happened to the old cable from raising the engine all the way up.  I bought a 12ft cable, but it ended up being a little long and I think 11ft would have worked a little better. We also decided recently to buy a new house!  We found a place with a half acre lot so that we can keep our boat at the house instead of a local storage lot.  We will move in late December. Steve also decided he was not busy enough so he started to build his first boat.  It will hopefully be a Storer Quick Canoe that he hopes to turn into a sailing canoe and possibly a sailing trimaran. Check out these great sailing documentaries we watched recently, both are free to watch.  The first is Chasing Bubbles about a young sailor Alex Rust and his circumnavigation.  If you watch it, please give some support to his charity, it is great karma to support something that gives you enjoyment for free.  The second documentary is about App Applegate and his building of an 80 foot sailboat in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. The password is on the screen, FreeRoam.  Both are great. We imagine that most sailors in the northern climates have put their boats in storage for the winter so we will do our best to get you through the winter with some interesting sailing and cruising interviews and podcasts. Our Trip to the US Sailboat Show in Annapolis We attended the US Sailboat Show in Annapolis October 6th-10th, 2016.  It is a great show with a very large selection of boats and vendors. We nearly cancelled the trip due to Hurricane Matthew targeting Florida as we were nervous about being away from the house during the storm.  It turned out that the storm stayed far enough off the Florida coast to avoid any damage in Orlando and the weather in Annapolis was great Thursday and Friday.  It rained all day Saturday and was overcast and windy on Sunday, but we still had a great trip. We got the chance to meet Paul and Sheryl Shard of the Distant Shores video series.   They are in the process of building a Discovery 48 that will have a lifting keel similar to their last boat a Southerly 49.   Keep their awesome sailing / cruising  videos in mind for Christmas gifts, they are great to watch and fuel your cruising dreams. We will eventually release a YouTube video on our visit to the Annapolis show, but for now we will share some links to the boats we thought were unique. Catalina 385 & 425 Pair of Jeanneau 54s different layouts, Jeanneau 58 new boat of 2017 dinghy dock under cockpit. Amel 55, awesome boat Gozzard 41, beautiful light blue hull, high quality woodwork, unique layout living room salon layout in vberth area. Southerly 57, made famous by distant shores, went out of business, but back in production. Lifting keel, 10ft9in down, 3ft6in up. Wauquiez 48 pilot saloon. Brandy did not like this one, strange layout and orange leather seats.  Very modern look and feel, would fit in well in Miami Beach Solaris 50 – James Bond grey, sleek low deck. Allures 45 and Garcia Exploration 45 – Jimmy Cornell owns a Garcia 45, aluminum, lifting keel, super tough boat. Dragonfly trimarans – 32 and 28ft. Similar to our boat but as a multi-hull and much faster! Probably sails faster than we can motor. Outbound 46 – ultimate monohull cruising boat, very high quality. Halberg-Rassey 372 and 40 MK II great cruising boats very comfortable. Passport 470 – Brandys favorite monohull for our needs. Center cockpit. Gunfleet 58 – fancy cruising, lifting keel, draft 12ft down, 6ft up Want a smaller boat but still have lots of money to spend – Alerion 33 express, beautiful boat, about as much room as our Macgregor 25 had below. Beautiful day sailer. Ventura 23 sport boat concept – similar to our Macgregor 26 Rhodes 22 – well built trailer sailor, but like the comfort of our boat better.   The Fleet Reserve Club became the official meeting spot for The Sailing Rode. Great patio upstairs with a view of the whole show. Run by retired military volunteers, usually just open to military, but open to public during the show. Got to know Pat, Charlie and the rest of the guys well through out the show. Met up with listeners each day at the show. Some just starting to sail who we could offer advice and some that have a lot of sailing experience who gave us great advice. The Chesapeake Light Craft teardrop camper was really cool.  Check out all their boat kits.     Andy Schell's swan 48, 59 north offshore adventures, On the Wind podcast. Great position at front of Ego alley, they barely fit boat due to the 8ft draft. Outremer 51 catamaran – The is same brand that Sailing la Vagabonde will be getting in 2017, great boat, fast and comfortable cruiser,  we think Riley and Elayna will be very happy with their new boat. Bali catamarans – garage door / open floorplan Gunboat 57 – simply awesome, very modern but still comfortable Get together with other sailing podcasters and youtubers, Jeffrey Wetting – Shooting the Breeze podcast, Teddy J from Sail Loot podcast, Kamau from iandiboats YouTube, and Vince from Sailing Nervous YouTube.  We coined it The first Sailing Multimedia Creators summit, or something like that. It was great to meet everyone.  Check out their content and give them some support. Vendors – great selection, we bought some Kent / Onxy PFDs, with integrated harnesses. Around $100 & new Maui Jim sunglasses for Brandy and Costa sunglasses for Steve. Brandy also bought a beautiful compass rose necklace from Maggie Lee Designs.  Maggie has a lot of nautical jewelry that would make great Christmas gifts.   Caught up with Greg Kutson, owner of Mantus Anchors, we gushed about how much we love our Mantus anchor that we bought last December. Greg showed us his newest products a portable scuba system and a waterproof rechargeable head light. We got to meet the US Olympic sailing team medalists!   We also had some great food while were were in the Annapolis / Baltimore area.  Check these places out if you are nearby  - Willys Kitchen near Baltimore airport had the best breakfast we have ever had! VIN909 Wine Cafe has great local sourced ingredients and is just over the bridge from the show. The Iron Rooster just outside the show entrance had great homey cooking with interesting recipes.  Davis' Pub great socializing with other sailors and good food too – all these places are amazing. We also enjoyed a few painkillers at Pussers, very tasty. We had late flight home on Sunday so we decided to take a sail on the Schooner Woodwind that morning,  We signed up Saturday afternoon and was told it would be Sporty on Sunday.  It was overcast and 15-20kn winds, I took a turn at the wheel, and we had a great sail!  Captain Jen and her crew were fun and did a great job.     Sailing / Cruising News Sailor, 74, sets sights on being oldest to sail solo non-stop around world WA yachting legend Jon Sanders sets sail on final circumnavigation of globe Matt Kent plans to set world record for smallest boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean Lindsey Lohan lost part of finger in boating accident Products of the Week Kanberra Odor and Mold prevention Gel Moso Natural Air Purifying Bag  We recently bought these two products to prevent mold, mildew and orders on our boat.  They were recommended by sailing friends and have great ratings on Amazon.   Amazon Store Please use our Amazon Affiliate links below for anything you buy on Amazon or look at over 90 items we have in our TSR Amazon store.  We use all the items on our boat and include notes of why we like them.  We also added over 40 sailing and cruising books we recommend.  You pay the same low Amazon price and we get a small commission. #148. Paul & Sheryl Shard talk to us live from Toronto about their start in sailing, how they got into movie-making, combining their passion for movies, travel and sailing, Paul's career as a boat-builder, Sheryl's theatre background and lots more! Audience Q&A included throughout. -- I wanted to post my episode about Cuba this week, but being at the rally has left me with little time to finish it up. It’s a very cool story, but I think I can make it even cooler, so I’m putting it off a week. Instead, episode 148 is another interview with Paul & Sheryl Shard of the Distant Shores sailing tv show. I’ve been hanging on to this one for a while now - we recorded it live in Toronto back in January - and it’s a really cool deep dive into their sailing history, the popularity of their show, some of their favorite stories from over the years and all their traveling and lots more. Paul & Sheryl are professional media people, so they do a really nice job of storytelling. We mixed in a few audience questions throughout as well. Mia and I have gotten to know the Shard’s quite well over the past several years. They’re some of our favorite people in sailing, and we love catching up with them at boat shows and on the water. In fact, while we were racing Isbjorn in the Caribbean 600, we saw them sailing north, and downwind, as we sailed south and around Montserrat, beating our brains out upwind in the race! As for Isbjorn, she remains on the canal next to Pam Wall’s house in Ft. Lauderdale. Mia and I head back down on May 15th ahead of our next leg north to Annapolis. We have some very cool projects in the works with Pam that I’ll just tease now, but which won’t release for a while, so stay tuned for news on that. Our passages are sold out for the rest of 2016, but we’ve got a lot of cool stuff happening in 2017, including two Atlantic crossings and some sailing in the Azores and Scotland, so check out the calendar and register at 59-north.com/offshore to come sailing with us! And just today I got the maps for our 2018 passage routes to the Arctic and Iceland from our graphics guy Steve Olson, which is VERY exciting! I’ll be opening those trips and publishing the full schedule soon, for what will truly be the adventure of a lifetime! Finally, if you enjoy the podcast, please do me a favor and review it on iTunes. I appreciate all the great feedback - if you’ve emailed me at some point and I haven’t replied, send a gentle reminder and I promise I will! I genuinely try to get to all of them, and really enjoy hearing from our fans. Okay, with that, please enjoy my latest conversation, live from Toronto, with Paul & Sheryl Shard!

Bestselling authors and award-winning filmmakers, Paul and Sheryl Shard, are known to worldwide viewing audiences as the fun-loving and adventurous hosts of the Distant Shores sailing adventure TV series which airs across Canada on Cottage Life Channel as well as in the USA on AWE TV. In this episode we talk about anchoring and different anchors. We discuss the costs of cruising and the ease in which you can make new acquaintances while cruising. After continuing down several other topics of interest the Shards give me an update on their cruising plans for the next year. I got an e-mail from Jim you can read it below but check out the links that he gave me the one from http://earth.nullschool.net/ is particularly interesting it shows the wind patterns for the entire globe at the current time -------------- Ahoy Franz, I am wondering if you've sailed to Portifino or the Amalfi coast? I just watched a 2014 movie called "The Trip To Italy" and was transported there when I saw scenes with the beautiful classic sailing yacht Patience, and I wondered if you did much sailing there? Here is a link to a scene showing the boat if you like classic sailboats as I know you do given you sail one yourself. Tinyurl.com/yacht-patience While Im at it, here is a link to a resource many of your listeners and yourself may find useful and if not useful, then surely fascinating. http://earth.nullschool.net/ You click on the word "earth" to bring up the Menu, where you can change the settings from MPH to knots etc. You can spin the earth ,zoom in/out with your mouse-wheel or clicking , select a point and see the windspeed there etc I find it interesting to observe wind/wave and current patterns over time, and I hope you and your listeners will benefit from it too. Both Canadians, the Shards grew up on the shores of the Great Lakes in Mississauga, Canada, and as schoolmates shared a love of the water and boats, outdoor adventure, photography and drama. Paul's first ever photography assignment was to document the high school play in which Sheryl played the lead role of Antigone. The rest is history... In 1982, they both graduated from York University in Toronto, Sheryl with a Fine Arts degree in Theatre and Paul with a B.A. in Computer Science. Before their marriage in 1985, they worked in their respective fields gradually building their stage, film and camera credits while stashing their savings to fulfill a shared dream of building a boat and documenting their adventures sailing to foreign lands. After 6,000 hours of combined work the couple built their first boat, a Classic 37 sailboat which they named “Two-Step”(the Shards love to dance). They launched her in Lake Ontario in 1988 and in 1989 set sail on their first international voyage travelling south to the Bahamas, across the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean, then on to Madeira, Canary Islands and Brazil, returning home via the Caribbean. The experiences of this epic voyage, which included underwater encounters with sperm whales and sharks, became a one-hour documentary, Call of the Ocean, which aired on Discovery Channel in 1994 and launched their television careers. Following that, the Shards co-produced the 17-episode series, Exploring Under Sail, with Canadian director, Peter Rowe (Angry Planet). Their latest series, Distant Shores, now 124 episodes and still growing, brought them back across the Atlantic Ocean to further explore countries of the Mediterranean aboard Two-Step. In 2007 “Two-Step” went into retirement and Paul and Sheryl moved aboard a new Southerly 42 sailboat which they named “Distant Shores”. The boat was built in England and the Shards sailed from there to Madeira and the Canary Islands, then made a transatlantic crossing (their 4th) from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean where they filmed season 5 and 6 of the series exploring the islands of the Caribbean, Bahamas, the eastern coast of the USA and the Great Lakes. In 2010 they sailed from England to countries of the Baltic Sea for Season 7 this time aboard their new Southerly 49, Distant Shores II. Season 8 includes a journey from England to Ireland, Scotland, Norway and Brittany France. Season 9 includes crossing France by the small canals, and on to Morocco before crossing the Atlantic with the ARC and more Caribbean adventures. They are currently filming Season 10 featuring more top cruising destinations in the Bahamas and Caribbean. The Shards have won two WorldFest Film and Video Production Awards for Best Sailing and Water Sport D...

#25. Paul & Sheryl Shard are well known to many sailors for their Distant Shores TV series and DVD collection. They've been sailing for over 25 years on three boats now, and Andy sat down to Skype with them and talk about it! A very sailorly episode, this one was recorded in Bermuda (where Andy was), while the Shard's were aboard their Southerly 49 in Georgetown, Exuma, Bahamas, actually anchored out! They talked about how they got into sailing, how they built their first boat from a bare hull, started cruising and documenting their trips on video (film back in the day), and how that has all evolved into a career! Buy their DVDs right on 59-north.com.

In an episode first aired on March 11, 2013, host Andrew Sandoval conducts an exclusive discussion with the late producer/composer/artist, Larry Marks. The interview includes details on composing "Shadows And Reflections" with Tandyn Almer, a song covered by The Action (as produced by George Martin). Larry's fascinating entree into the world of songwriting and production in the Los Angeles music scene of the mid-1960's. Composing for Frank Sinatra and signing with his publishing company (including a collaboration with Sammy Cahn). Producing at the famed Gold Star Studios and collaborating with the "wrecking crew" of session musicians (such as Leon Russell). Composing the song "Glass" as covered by Sagittarius and produced by Gary Usher. How Larry collaborated with other songwriters, like Ernie Sheldon and Sammy Cahn. Marks role as a staff producer at Columbia. His early releases for the label such as Sonny Oceans (a.k.a. Gary Weiss - director of The Rutles) and Keith Allison's "Action, Action, Action." Recording at Columbia Square on Sunset Blvd. with engineer Ray Gerhardt. Producing British duo Chad & Jeremy's hit "Distant Shores" (and meeting their bassist/songwriter/manager Jim Guercio). Producing Gene Clark's solo debut single, the masterpiece "Echoes" (including Leon Russell's mesmerizing orchestral arrangement). Songwriter/producer/artist Johnny Walsh's fantastic one-off single for Columbia, "The End," composed by Ian Whitcomb. Jamie And The Jury (a group that recorded for a few labels) and their catchy 45, "This Too Shall Pass." Larry Marks' forced move from Columbia to A&M and signing the Merry-Go-Round. The generosity and culture of Herb Albert & Jerry Moss. Producing Emitt Rhodes & The Merry-Go-Round recordings such as "She Laughed Loud" and "Missing You" (which he composed). Studio aggregation The Garden Club's "Little Girl Lost-And-Found" (which featured songwriter Ruthann Friedman as vocalist). The Merry-Go-Round's lack of national success. Producing Southern California's West Coast Branch for their A&M release, "Colors Of My Life." Working with Phil Ochs and producing his Pleasures Of The Harbor album (selections of which are presented in rare mono mixes), which represented a stylistic shift for the singer-songwriter. Working at A&M studios and mastering with Bernie Grundman. Phil's fascination with Lenny Bruce. Larry Mark's own single on A&M: "L.A. Break Down (And Take Me In)." Producing the Flying Burrito Brothers seminal debut album with engineer Henry Lewy (and the fuzz pedal steel sound of Sneaky Pete). A reunion with Gene Clark and producing the albums of Dilllard & Clark and the single "Why Not Your Baby." Larry Marks' departure from A&M to focus on his family and his amp company Acoustic, as well as eventual move to Warner Bros. pictures. Larry Marks passed away on February 24, 2013 - his music lives on. A full playlist of this program is available @ http://www.cometothesunshine.com/id122.html
