It's hard to disappear…with all the surveillance tools out there and digital smog we leave behind, it's almost impossible to vanish without a trace…yet it happens… We still haven't found Amelia Earhart who has been missing since 1937 when she tried to fly around the world…we don't know what became of DB Cooper, the hijacker who in 1971 bailed out of a plane somewhere in the pacific northwest with $200,000 in ransom money…no one has ever found teamster president jimmy Hoffa after that last lunch in 1975… And you've probably heard about maddy McCann the English child who is still missing since 2007 after disappearing from the bedroom of an apartment at a resort in Portugal… Those are the most notorious cases….but have you heard these stories? Edward and Stephanie Andrews left a cocktail party in may 1970…they were last seen turning the wrong way on a one-way street and were never heard from again…the case is still open… Then we have the case of Peter Winston, a chess prodigy who went missing after bombing out of a tournament in 1977…his body has never been found… Anyone remember the story of Bison Dele?...he was a retired NBA player who went sailing in the South Pacific and was never seen again…cops think his brother, who was on the boat with him, killed everyone on board, dumped the bodies at sea and then committed suicide…but we'll never know… There are mysterious disappearances throughout the history of music, too…one of the most baffling is the fate of Richey Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers…one day he was at a hotel in London getting ready for a trip to North America…the next—who knows?...he was just—gone…vanished without a trace… So many questions…what happened?...what do we know?...with all the CCTV coverage in the UK, is there no record of his movements?...what was done to find him?...where's the body?...or could he still be alive?...did he just figure out how to disappear completely…have I got a story for you… This is the mysterious disappearance of Richey Edwards from “uncharted: crime and mayhem in the music industry”… Show contact info: X (formerly Twitter): @AlanCross Website: curiouscast.ca Email: Alan@alancross.ca Learn more about your ad choices. WARNING: This episode mentions alcohol abuse, depression, and self-harm. This album is a long-time favorite around the offices. The Holy Bible (The Manic Street Preacher's third album, not necessarily the book) is caustic, relentless, and at times, verbally claustrophobic... and as it approaches 30 years of age, it's still one of music's most potent. In the early nineties, rising above the noise of the scene from Manchester and the budding dominance of Brit-Pop, was no easy task. These four childhood friends from Wales found a way.  Ripping pages from The Clash, Guns-n-Roses, and even Public Enemy, the band blazed new territory with their unique sound and lyrics that sometimes begged you to have a dictionary handy - (this was pre-internet). You either know the story of Manics rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards, or you don't.  On this episode, we tell the story of the band's seminal third album, The Holy Bible. Well, we don't; we let the band tell it in their own words. Rich Morgan's still here, and provides us with some incredible context of the time and insights into the wonderful but warped mind of Richey Edwards. Several trigger warnings for this episode, mainly for discussion on suicide but also anorexia, The Holocaust, genital mutilation, abortion, depression, murder and self-harm. We're going to release parts 3 & 4 next week covering the rest of their career, our The Nicher The Better top 5 songs about saints and our shoutouts at the end. Richey Edwards is the frontman of the Manic Street Preachers. But he's quiet. A little pale. And one day... he's gone. For some fans, the possibility that he's watching, listening, smiling somewhere, is impossible to resist. There are loose ends. The money that was never found. Richey's fascination with Israel. The books he left behind. And there are the sightings. In Newport by the passport office. On the hippy trail in Goa. In a bar on a Spanish island. On a beach in the Canary Islands. Each time, the story's similar. A gaunt, quiet man, flitting out of view and remaining out of reach...WARNING: this episode contains graphic descriptions of self-harm and references to suicide. W/C 16th May 2022 I didn't know this cover version of the Hal David & Burt Bacharach song existed until literally a couple of minutes ago. I have also been a 'kind-of' fan of the Manics, by which I mean there are a handful of tracks I really like and I am very taken by him as a frontman...but I can't say I am a card-carrying fan This version was their contribution to the "Help" album, a charity album from 1995 that raised money for the WarChild charity. The recording was the first piece of work released by the bad following the disappearance of band member Richey Edwards, and it has since become a part of their live set. Stay safe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aafcO6mw3ks (Manic Street Preachers - Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head) Therapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. It started out as a mechanism for me to clear my head, with the hope that by saying stuff out loud it would act as a little bit of self-help. It's remains loose in style, fluid in terms of content and raw - it's a one take, press record and see what happens, affair. The Manic Street Preachers were the up and coming Welsh rock band that emerged in the 90s and swept the UK with their punk attitude. Richey Edwards was the face of the band, and he certainly made a name for himself on the scene with his looks and how he'd present himself in interviews. He spoke candidly about his struggles with mental health, and his tendency to self harm was a subject he let the world see plain as day. However to the surprise of his friends and family, Richey disappeared the day Manic was supposed to embark on their breakout American tour on February 1 1995. To this day, he has not been found and his case has been shrouded with theories. Was this a suicide, or did he stage his own disappearance for a new life? This episode deals with issues including suicide, self-harm and anorexia. Please exercise self-care when choosing to listen. When the Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers walked off stage at the London Astoria on 21st December 1994, they left in their wake a mangled mess of guitars and amps. The band had signed off their last date on tour by smashing their instruments, which, in hindsight, signaled the end of an era. 6 weeks later, troubled lyricist and driving force of the band Richey Edwards disappeared on the eve of a promotional tour to the USA. He has not been seen by his family or his band mates since that day. A couple of weeks later his car was found abandoned near a notorious suicide spot, but no body has ever been found. Rumours of sightings and conspiracies have fueled the belief that Richey is still alive and a recent book has presented a compelling case that the 27 year old faked his own death and staged his disappearance in order to vanish into obscurity. You can follow Persons Unknown on Facebook and Instagram Background music New direction  Music from Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/kevin-macleod/new-directionLicense code: B10HVVZOHW0DTJ6OSources For a full list of sources please see the Facebook page /https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/features/richey-edwards-manic-street-preachers-disappearance-missing-25-year-anniversary-a9308046.html?amphttps://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/culture/article/richey-edwards-disappearance/amphttps://www.nme.com/news/music/new-evidence-emerges-suggest-richey-edwards-staged-disappearance-2438975?amphttps://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/richey-edwards-manic-street-preachers-17661457.amphttps://www.penguin.co.uk/articles/2019/jan/withdrawn-traces-richey-edwards-day-of-disappearance.htmlhttps://amp.theguardian.com/music/2008/nov/29/richey-edwards-manic-street-preachershttps://www.indiependent.co.uk/the-legacy-of-richey-edwards-26-years-later/?amp=1https://repeatfanzine.wordpress.com/2019/01/31/withdrawn-traces-searching-for-the-truth-about-richey-manic/amp/Still Talking BlackA show about bringing awareness and perspectives to issues Black people face every day.Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify

MISSING PRESUMED… What happened to Connie Converse, Richey Manic and Agatha Christie?   Having someone you love go missing must be heartbreaking for the ones left behind trying to pick up the pieces and never knowing if or when they'll return. This week on Eavesdroppin', we look at the mysterious disappearance of two musicians and the red-herring plot twist of Agatha Christie's real-life disappearance… But first, Geordie and Michelle start off with some ap-a-logies, namely for mispronouncing Coronappropriation! We share some AMAZING insights from Tameera the Modern Mystic about where your pets go when they die, why you need to let them go and why dogs sniff arses! All before Michelle raves on about the BBC seriese Back to Life and a funny little song she heard in an episode from Season 2… So… Who is Connie Converse? Why have we never heard of her? Is Connie Converse really her real name? When did Connie Converse disappear? And is she still missing? Why is Michelle singing? And why is she mid-level obsessed with this obscure folk singer? *Warning – don't expect any answers! Geordie then follows with the curious case of Agatha Christie… Why is her disappearance a little-known fact? Was it a hoax? Was she trying to punish her philandering husband? And what's with the loaf of bread? All this and more! Geordie then wraps up the episode by dipping her toe into the murky, sad waters of the disappearance of Richey Edwards AKA Richey Manic from the Manic Street Preachers…  Did he jump off the Severn Bridge? Did he fake his own disappearance? Is he living in Goa? Did he run off to a kibbutz in Israel with the mysterious Vivian? Was he swept away in the Thai tsunami? Is he partying with Elvis? We'd like to think so but we'll never know… YOU LOVE US... and we love youse!   Next week we talk about GHOST STORIES so get on it and send us your ghosty whosty stories and in the meantime… get Eavesdroppin'! *Disclaimer: We don't claim to have any factual info about anything ever, soooooorrrrrryyyyyyyy J   Listen, like, subscribe, share etc…     Listen here: www.eavesdroppinpodcast.com Or here: https://podfollow.com/1539144364 EAVESDROPPIN' ON SPOTIFY: https://open.spotify.com/show/3BKt2Oy... Welcome back to Sound Affects podcast, after a long hiatus during which time we've been in a 6-month lockdown/post-lockdown pandemic. He famously interviewed Richey Edwards of Manic Street Preachers in the early 90s, resulting in one of the most iconic and sobering NME images of all time. I wanted to speak to Steve in more depth about this experience and other complex encounters that he documents in his book. In the first part of a double Classic Album Series, Steve and Remfry look back at Manic Street Preachers third album The Holy Bible. The boys talk about the mindset of the band going into recording, from the death of their manager Phillip Hall to the pressure the ever growing cult surrounding enigmatic guitarist Richey Edwards put on them, and the general feel of alternative rock in 1994 in the aftermath of the death of Kurt Cobain. They then deep dive into the record itself, picking apart the themes and ideology of what is certainly one of the darkest, most nihilistic and disturbing albums in the history of popular music, before retracing Edwards steps after his mysterious disappearance in early 1995. We don't talk about love, we only want to get drunk, And we are not allowed to spend, As we are told that this is the end ...”,

John Wilson continues with his new series in which he talks to leading performers and songwriters about the album that made them or changed them. Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios. Programme 3. Manic Street Preachers' 'THe Holy Bible' with Sean Moore, James Dean Bradfield and Nicky Wire. Released a mere five months before the disappearance of main lyricist and rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards, The Holy Bible reflects his fragile mental state. On its release, Q said "even a cursory glance at the titles will confirm that this is not the new Gloria Estefan album". And with tracks like "Yes", "Of Walking Abortion", "Mausoleum" and "4st 7lb", the lyrics deal with everything from prostitution and serial killers to the Holocaust and self-starvation. With Manic Street Preachers about to take this career defining album back on Tour in December, when they played some of the songs from it for this special edition of Mastertapes, it was the first time in two decades that Nicky, James and Sean played some of them in front of an audience. Complete versions of the songs performed in the programme (as well as some that weren't) can be heard on the 'Mastertapes' pages on the Radio 4 website. Producer: Paul Kobrak.
