Clare and Hannah take on Jekyll and Hyde in a battle of Victorian proportions. In other words, we slink furtively through darkened doorways, scandalize young housemaids sitting up past their bedtime, and write letters to our lawyers with the tantalizing instruction: "Do not open until I have died or disappeared under mysterious circumstances." Get your own copy of this Robert Louis Stevenson classic, here at Clare's Bookshop.org store! Or, since Jekyll & Hyde is in the public domain, you can read it online for FREE at Project Gutenberg. Was this character a Narcissist or a Psychopath - or Both? I'm not making the diagnosis here, just examining the story and it's origins.Robert Lewis Stevenson was the creator of the classic, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. A classic horror novel that has captured the imagination of many and has been made into a motion picture several times. It seems, along with nightmares and scientific journals, a man named Deacon Brody, was one of the inspirations for the characters Jekyll and Hyde. Brody was a distinguished and trusted gentleman of status who chose, or somehow was compelled by the demons in his own mind, to live a rather duplicitous life. Deacon Brodie was a respected businessman, a city councilor, a cabinetmaker, and a locksmith. Who was always dressed in his finest, and who was always present at the best social events. On the surface he lived a respectable life with a wife and children – but he also lived a secret life filled with gambling, drunkenness, cockfighting, two mistresses, and 5 illegitimate children. Narcissist, psychopath, schizophrenic, or multiple personalities - what do you think? Hello Lovely Listeners, Here is the short, third Chapter of the original version of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, written by Robert Lewis Stevenson. It is quite different from the movies and renditions I have seen and heard of. I look forward to reading the part that gives rise to the current version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Do you like the slower pace of the action? Do you enjoy the thrill and anticipation of seeing the monster that we know so well today? What do you think frightened Victorians most about this story? I enjoy original text of reimagined stories, that must be why I love all of the Origin stories out today. Follow us at the links below. This is Jeffrey K. Holbrook. Welcome to the the audio feed from holbrooknewmedia.com. I recently started working on a few projects with with J.D. Sutter over at Porchlight Family Media. They have a show called Verses in Vox. They are taking classic works of poetry, and have them performed by a voice actor, then original music is composed, and original photography and artwork is made. When all is produced and made ready by the 5 or 6 people involved, it is released. You really need to go to verses.porchlightfamilymedia.com to listen to the various amazing productions. Before getting involved with these projects, I hadn't really gotten much into classic poetry, but I have really been finding a new dimension to these treasures. Today, with permission, I am presenting "My Shadow" by Robert Lewis Stevenson, in its entirety. -------------------------- Remember, go to verses.porchlightfamilymedia.com to listen and get subscription options for this amazing podcast. #77. NBC syndication. "Markheim". A weak-willed man is lead to theft and murder by his inner voice. I remember reading Markheim as a child and then being introduced to it by accident once more as a young man when I bought an anthology of short stories called "Ghosts for Christmas." As with many supernatural thrillers or tales with a twist it is difficult to adequately write a review without giving away the plot. I could for instance tell you that the original story might have been a potential precursor for "A Christmas Carol" if it were not for the fact that the Dickensian novella predated it by 41 years. We can be safe to say though, that although the literary Markheim may not be the parent of the better known "Scrooge" he is very much the sibling. In this radio version (which departs considerably from the original text), Markheim is a man who discovers the truth of his soul and the strange force that has been propelling him ever forward. A voice from the darkness within him holds the key to his deceit and will not easily let him escape. #71. NBC syndication. "The Case Of M. Valdemar". A physician claims he can prevent death by hypnosis. Monsieur Valdemar desperately seeks the expertise of a medical hypnotist for the sake of his dying wife Maria... and the rather eccentric Dr. Foissant answers the call with dramatic results. Even though his license has been revoked Dr Foissant has been perfecting his techniques and now with the added opportunity to prove his abilities to his peers and seemingly prolong the life of Maria Valdemar indefinitely he eagerly performs his art. Although unable to physically recover from her illness it appears Maria's hypnotized spirit lives on... but it seems this life is not one of peace but one of purgatory! With a once again desperate Monsieur Valdemar begging his assistance Dr Foissant is now compelled to try to bring Maria from this apparently hellish trance. But what terrible fate awaits Maria if Dr Foissant succeeds and what terrible fate awaits Dr. Foissant he fails?
