Up this week is a provocative new episode for The Nick Halaris Show featuring author and historian Kate Epstein. Kate is an Associate Professor for History at Rutgers, the author of two fascinating books—"Torpedo” and “Analog Superpowers”— and a contributor to Persuasion, a publication dedicated to promoting free society. I came across Kate's work when a friend and one of my most steadfast supporters forwarded me her must-read essay “We, Robots.” While most are out cheering AI and its potential to make us super intelligent, Kate dares to consider the alternative: what if AI is actually making us all dumber? When I first read the article, I had a feeling Kate would make for a great podcast guest and she did not disappoint. Tune in to this fascinating conversation to learn:The scary truth about the decline in the reading and writing capabilities of college students and why professors around the country are being forced to lower their standards Why AI represents such a profound threat to the original ideal of the liberal arts education (i.e. training people for freedom) and why we should fight against its use in schools Why reading and writing are skills we shouldn't take for granted and the crucial role they play in fostering free society As always, I hope you all enjoy this episode. Today, I'm excited to discuss the profound impact of early language and speech experiences on cognitive and academic skills, specifically reading skills. Joining us is a seasoned expert in the field, Stacy Payne, a speech-language pathologist and the founder of Bright Beginnings Pediatric Services. Stacy shares her insights on the importance of creating a language-rich environment for children from an early age. She explains how these early interactions, much more than simple bedtime stories, are integral to cognitive development. Through everyday activities and conversations, parents and caregivers can significantly influence a child's language acquisition and communication skills. We also explore the complexity of the developing brain and how language and communication skills evolve throughout childhood. Stacy highlights the importance of repetition in creating new neural pathways and how incorporating language-building strategies into daily routines, like grocery shopping, can make a huge difference. For those concerned about missing critical language milestones in early childhood, Stacy offers reassurance that the brain can learn new skills and adapt at any age. She also shares exciting opportunities to maximize learning during the summer months, including intensive skill-building camps provided by Bright Beginnings Pediatric Services. This is definitely a conversation you don't want to miss! Show Notes: [2:33] - Speech and language therapy addresses more than just articulation. [3:47] - Stacy explains that speech and language pathology includes everything “above the waist.” [5:01] - It is anything that can get in the way of a person communicating. [7:15] - Language doesn't just include verbal communication. The brain is very complex and we have a lot of modalities to communicate. [13:52] - There are so many opportunities in simple day-to-day interactions to integrate language development strategies. [15:12] - The brain requires repetition to develop a new skill and create a new neural pathway. [16:51] - Build language into your day. Think about the countless opportunities at the grocery store. [19:04] - Stacy describes some of the important considerations if a child is growing up in a household of multiple languages. [22:28] - It is important to continue these conversations throughout the child's life, not just in the early years. [24:39] - Talking through things is also a form of modeling. These are all teaching and learning moments. [26:39] - A lot of times, people don't have the words to express themselves. [28:08] - After articulation, pay attention to reading and writing. [31:30] - Sometimes we forget about the things that we can pull into language development as we work on goals and articulation. [33:35] - Stacy discusses cognitive training that speech-language pathologists go through that are typically unexpected by most people. Emmanuel has more than 35 years of experience learning Chinese. He began his Mandarin odyssey in the late 80s, studying the language at university. But he quickly became frustrated at how inefficient teaching and learning methods were at the time. Most of his classmates gave up, but Emmanuel didn't. Instead, he developed a lifelong passion for Chinese, using his background in computer science to create technological solutions to make Mandarin acquisition a more efficient process. In recent years he's created an app called Full Chinese, which helps learners reach native-level proficiency in Chinese reading. It's used by learners around the world and has even been integrated into Chinese Studies classrooms at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). I chatted to Emmanuel about his challenges learning Chinese, the story behind his Full Chinese app and why he's trying to bridge a divide between academic linguists and language learners.

In this conversation, Dr. Pamela Snow will discuss oral language in early childhood and across the school years, with a focus on its importance and role in developing, and being developed by, reading skills. She will also discuss the importance of applying public health principles to early reading instruction, to maximize success for all through evidence-based reading instruction and support.Language and literacy are a two-way street that is not always well understood. Oral language abilities promote reading abilities and vice versa, and as research has shown, early reading success loops back to oral language skills. How can educators use this knowledge to help ALL students learn to read?Join this fascinating conversation with Dr. Snow, a respected researcher, author, and professor of cognitive psychology in the School of Education at La Trobe University in Australia. She will share her experience and insight into research findings about why early oral language skills are the essential engine children need to bring to school (and indeed, have strengthened through their school experiences). Dr. Snow will discuss why children need to be exposed to more complex vocabulary and syntactic structures than typical conversation affords, and how teachers of these early learners can help their students master the skills they need to become lifelong readers and communicators. In this podcast, you'll learn:How decoding and language comprehension need to work together in reading acquisition and ongoing developmentWays to incorporate explicit teaching of morphology and etymology in early stages of systematic phonics instructionWhy children who do master reading early have a lasting edge on those who do notWhat teachers of early learners can do every day to help students build both oral and reading skillsImportance of the scientific method in informing policy and practice in schools and the importance of avoiding pseudoscientific approaches, no matter how appealing they may seem

As literacy teachers, our goal is to develop skilled readers and writers. And although we want our students to be independent in these areas, providing them support actually helps them master literacy skills to become independent. One of my favorite ways to support my students in writing is through using graphic organizers. In this episode, I'm sharing why using graphic organizers can be used to support quality written responses. There is so much power in using simple supports that scaffold students into writing about reading. Graphic organizers are an easy support for students while also benefiting them as they structure their ideas to easily craft a written response. In order for you to use graphic organizers in the most effective way, I outline my process as to how I introduce them to students, ways students interact with them, and how it ultimately creates a well-developed written response. In upper elementary, we want our students to be strong in their written responses in regard to reading. As I've established, using graphic organizers is one of the best ways to do that. These visual tools provide a clear framework for analyzing texts and generating thoughtful responses. So, take some time this week and implement and practice written responses using graphic organizers and see your students thrive in their writing skills.Show Notes: https://theliteracydive.com/episode142Resources Mentioned:Join The Daily Writing DisguiseReading Graphic Organizers for Reading Skills and Reading StrategiesMonthly Writing Prompts Free SampleConnect with Me:Join The Daily Writing Disguise Membership hereShop my TpT store hereCheck out TDWD Collections hereReceive emails from me hereFollow me on Instagram hereRead my blog posts here

Our conversation today illuminates a hot topic in reading - skills and strategies. What's the difference? Peter Afflerbach, researcher and professor, shares in the podcast that he and his colleagues surveyed educators and “ten people would give us ten different answers. They were all kind of related, but all different.” Peter explains that with practice, strategies require less deliberate attention. When strategies become effortless and automatic, the reading strategy has become a reading skill. This is bound to change based on complexity of text and topic, so we learn that knowledge plays a critical role in strategy use and comprehension, too. A Parenting Resource for Children’s Behavior and Mental Health
Literacy remains to be a major issue in education, particularly in the Individualized Education Plan, in the United States. This is even more of a problem because of literacy difficulties associated with dyslexia. Dyslexia greatly affects children's academic development as they struggle with phonological processing, comprehension, and even spelling words. This can also affect one's self-esteem because of feelings of constant frustration and other negative feelings. We'll be focusing on improving reading skills – brain training for dyslexia in today's episode with Nancy McDermott, a fellow mother of a dyslexic, to help kids thrive especially in school. Let's take a step towards changing the brain and giving your dyslexic child the right keys to help them learn. Nancy's story of how she came to work with Anthony.I remember wanting to become a neurofeedback provider after seeing how incredible it is to be able to help families especially when it comes to dealing with mental health issues. I've personally seen how Nancy did her mission and it's been such a profound moment to witness how she helped families.Nancy recalled how Anthony was such a bright kid. Early on in his development, he had good verbal and motor skills but all of a sudden, as they were trying to learn letters, they reached a dead stop which was shocking as he was learning everything else so quickly and easily.Diagnosing dyslexia today.Having worked in schools and having done neuropsych testing for 22 years, people still don't understand dyslexia today. It's so easy to diagnose. You just need to go to a qualified expert who knows what it is.Dyslexia could appear in many signs like he couldn't rhyme things properly. For example, if you would ask your kid to write something with rain, he might write a frame. It's close but it doesn't make sense. People don't understand dyslexia because they still think it's a visual processing problem but in truth, it's an auditory processing problem wherein the brain can't properly hear the sound. What is Orton-Gillingham and how does it work?Orton-Gillingham is an approach that came about in 1917. It is a style of reading instruction that was designed for dyslexics and it is still being used until today. It is the mother of all dyslexia reading programs that are evidence-based and proven to be effective. Having 95-97% efficacy, such an approach is well-regarded for its structured intensive phonics. It is designed in a way to remediate dyslexia without getting into all the particulars, but it requires a lot of intensity. In fact, you can't just skip the steps; you have to master it in order to move to the next level. There is no medication for dyslexia. There is no medication for dyslexia. Many parents come to me not knowing what else to do and saying that they've been encouraged to have their dyslexic kids medicated. However, there is actually a way to deal with dyslexia so we shouldn't lose hope. Many kids that are dyslexic are first diagnosed with ADHD, especially if they're not caught in the beginning before they get to reading instruction. In fact, it's often misdiagnosed with ADHD as they share common symptoms like difficulties in attention and concentration.Dyslexics typically have a higher IQ than average, and they can compensate with instruction. So as much as possible, what you need to do is to get your kid identified as early as you possibly can.How do you treat neurodyslexia? We've already mentioned how helpful Orton-Gillingham is and I believe neurofeedback and Orton-Gillingham is the winning combination across diagnoses. Having these two combined not only calms the brain but it also allows for increased learning. However, there needs to be consistency in...
