The contributor Yiyun Li is a fiction writer who also teaches creative writing at Princeton University. “The campus is empty,” she tells Joshua Rothman. “The city is quiet. It has a different feeling. And it’s a good time to read ‘War and Peace.’ ” When the coronavirus outbreak began, Li reached for Tolstoy’s epic of Russia during the Napoleonic Wars; there is no better book, she feels, for a time of fear and uncertainty.  So as many of us were retreating to our homes in March, Yiyun Li launched a project called Tolstoy Together, an online book club in which thousands of people, on every continent except Antarctica, are participating. In the morning, Li posts thoughts about the day’s reading (twelve to fifteen pages), and participants reply, on Twitter and Instagram, with their own comments. “War and Peace,” Li believes, is capacious enough to be endlessly relevant. “The novel started with Annette having a cough. And she said she was sick, she couldn't go out to parties, so she invited people to her house for a party and everybody came. And so that was ironic. I have read the novels so many times. This is the only time I thought, ‘Oh, you know, a cough really means something. These people really should be careful about life.’ ” Plus, with the coronavirus pandemic delaying the start of the M.L.B. season, David Remnick revisits a conversation with baseball’s greatest observer: the Hall of Fame inductee Roger Angell.

The guys talk about successful hunts that really contributed to their passion for the outdoors now. It’s really important to look back on some of these great days in the field, and start piecing together the tactics that maybe you didn’t even know were put into play back then. Now, looking back, we can see why these bucks were in this spot at the time we pulled the trigger. For every memory, Parker and Drew talk about some of these lessons that they learned, and how they apply to their hunting style today. Another interesting thing about this episode is that the guys were raised in totally different hunting cultures. Drew came from Florida, where hunting with dogs is a way of life. He talks about how that shaped his hunting style, and also lit a passion inside of him for deer hunting. Parker talks about being raised in West Texas, where corn feeders are a main food source for deer and public land is non existent. As different as they are, both ended up as hardcore public land hunters in Alabama. It’s interesting how that works! Enjoy!

This was supposed to be our 'arrival' podcast at Liverpool's South Bend training base in Indiana. But missed and delayed flights mean Ian Doyle and Kristian Walsh, at the time of recording, find themselves hanging around in LaGuardia Airport. But their desperation for a well-deserved pint aside, the pair are in chipper mood as they provide their first tour diary entry from America. On the agenda, apart from the weather, in-flight entertainment, and kicking toddlers (not actually kicking toddlers), is the venue for the Reds' opening friendly, the difference between now and tours past and why no member of Jurgen Klopp's squad is likely to be pulled away from training for a Dunkin' Donuts meet and greet, plus the return of some of the big hitters. However, news broke before this podcast was recorded that Klopp will be without his feared front three for a little while longer yet and that leads to an interesting discussion over Rhian Brewster, Harry Wilson and Ryan Kent. Enjoy. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy

2015 is nearly at an end. Of course for Vancouver Whitecaps, their competitive year came to a shuddering halt in the second week of November. In the second of our three end of season roundtable discussions, AFTN writer Jay Duke, and Curva Collective's Zachary Meisenheimer and Steven Lamothe join your regular podcast co-hosts to look back the 'Caps 2015 season and their first five years in Major League Soccer. This season was the 'Caps best one in the MLS era in many areas. In such a strong Western Conference, did Vancouver punch above their weight or did they finish where they deserved? And despite the successes, was this year a missed opportunity for the Whitecaps? There was a first Voyageurs Cup, a first Champions Leagues campaign and a Western Conference semi-final appearance. But with our Cascadian rivals winning the whole shebang, how much pressure does this and the club's achievements this year put on the Whitecaps going forward? Portland Timbers entered MLS the same year as the Whitecaps, in 2011. Both clubs are now five years into their new eras. The Timbers have won both a Western Conference title and a MLS Cup so far, with the Whitecaps left trailing and trophyless in the league. Just how have those first five years been for Vancouver and what will the next five years hold in store? We chat about all of this and more. Have a listen!

It is a special weekend edition of the Bedford & Sullivan research process, as we welcome back retired SF State Lecturer Svein Arber to the program. Svein, along with co-writer Ford Hovis, wrote a novel in the 1970's under the pen name "Damon Rice" titled "Seasons Past." The book details the lives of three generations of the Rice family as they make their way through New York baseball history, from the late-1850's through the Dodgers and Giants exit. There is so much to cover, so on this episode, we will start with the first generation of Fletcher Rice, as he gets entangled in the black mark of the early part of baseball's history: gambling. So, join us at 12PM ET for the latest edition of the Bedford & Sullivan podcast!
