Voice of the Black & Gold Max Bretos and co-host Steve Beitashour get right into the action by recapping a victorious Game 3 against Vancouver that once again saw Mati Bogusz rise to the moment to score the match- and series-winning goal. The win sets LAFC up for a Western Conference Semifinal showdown against another familiar Cascadian opponent in the Seattle Sounders. That momentous match is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 23 at BMO Stadium. The fellas take a step back to look at the larger playoff picture across the league and how some chaotic results in the Eastern half of the bracket have redounded to LAFC's benefit should the team reach a record-tying third straight MLS Cup Final. Finally Max and Beita discuss the handful of LAFC players who have joined up with their nations for the international break and the benefits and concerns that brings for the Black & Gold. In the second half of the show, former player turned soccer pundit for ESPN Herculez Gomez joins the show to chop it about about everything from the status of El Traffico and player development work being done around MLS to the amazing career of Kei Kamara and what's going on with the USA and Mexico in the Concacaf Nations League.

Our guest, Kerouac scholar Jim Jones, describes Kerouac's sojourn to Seattle in the summer of 1956. There, he worked as a fire lookout at Desolation Peak atop the North Cascade Mountains. Along the way, Jones recounts personal encounters and friendships with other Beat Generation luminaries, including Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, and Gregory Corso. Adding a touch of practical insight, firefighter, EMT, and seasoned fire lookout Jim Henterly complements Jones' literary perspective. Together, they reveal Kerouac's Cascadian adventure while exploring the feelings of anticipation, vulnerability, and disappointment that often accompany travel to unknown lands. "When people tell you about a place, you form an impression in your imagination. And when you get there, it's either going to coincide or clash with your imagination of it.” ~Jim Jones

Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast! In this episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat all things Vancouver Whitecaps, MLS, Canadian Premier League and more. To begin, they take a look at the Whitecaps, who were unable to win their third straight game, falling 3-1 to the LA Galaxy at BC Place. As a result, they finished the weekend in second place in the Western Conference, as the Galaxy overtook them with that win. Due to a lack of clinical edge at both ends of the pitch, as the 'Caps were unable to take their chances in the attack and made some key defensive errors, the Galaxy would punish them for both of those things, allowing them to take a well-deserved victory in the end. Despite that, there's a lot to be encouraged about this one for Vancouver, even if it might not have immediately felt like it, and they look at why that's the case. From there, they take a look ahead at the 'Caps next game, a clash in Seattle against Cascadian rivals, the Seattle Sounders. There, the 'Caps will have a big task on their hands, as they look to win their first game in Seattle since March of 2016. Yet, while Seattle hasn't typically treated them well in the past, there's reasons for optimism in this matchup, as Alex and Sam outline. Continuing on, they take a look around MLS in "Around MLS in 5" to round off the first part of the show, seeing what stood out this weekend in the league, and what to keep an eye on this upcoming matchday. Lastly, they dive into the opening weekend of CPL action in part two, one that saw the two BC CPL teams get off to flying starts, as Pacific defeated the Halifax Wanderers 1-0 and Vancouver FC downed Valour 4-1 to open their 2024 campaigns on high notes. Now, they'll both look to build off that in week two, with Vancouver set to host Halifax, while Pacific welcomes Valour, as they try to make it 6/6 points to start the year. Godolphin trainer James Cummings on Cascadian, Zardozi and all of the stable's chances on Day 2 of The Championships.
Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast! In this episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat all things Vancouver Whitecaps and MLS. To begin, they dive into the latest Whitecaps match, a clash with their Cascadian rivals, the Portland Timbers, who they welcomed to BC Place this past weekend. There, the Whitecaps went through quite the emotional rollercoaster, as they won 3-2 after blowing a 2-0 lead, allowing them to climb to second in the Western Conference. They look at what to take away from that Whitecaps performance, one where they showed a lot of good things on both sides of the ball, but were let down by their execution, especially defensively, which allowed the Timbers to grow into the game. Despite that, the 'Caps did enough to win on the day thanks to their strong start and finish, as they continued to show their maturity as a side through the early days of this 2024 MLS season. After that, they took a look at the 'Caps next game, a clash with Canadian rivals Toronto FC, who they'll face at BC Place this weekend. A clash of two teams that have started quite well, they dive into what to expect from this upstart TFC side, who is clicking nicely under new manager John Herdman, before seeing how the 'Caps might match up to that, setting the table for what should be a pretty cagey matchup. Lastly, they take a look around MLS in "Around MLS in 5", seeing what happened around the league amid another chaotic weekend of action. Inviting listeners into his deep connection with the forest and the natural world, Ross Reid brings an inspirational energy and commitment to this interview. Connecting around their shared love for old growth and wild places, Ross and Ayana consider what it means to get people interested in protecting the places that sustain us. How can we inspire the connection with the land that brings people to defend it? Ross shares the journey behind his work as “Nerdy About Nature,” and the passion for education, science, and the outdoors that drives the project. Breaking down what he wants people to get from his content, he considers how to get people to pay attention to the issues that matter without feeding into the seemingly endless loop of the attention economy. Ross and Ayana delve into critical questions about advocacy and activism in times of social media, and consider what it would truly mean to engage in action that connects and protects. This conversation brings together rooted optimism, an understanding of the importance of education and knowledge sharing, and a dream of better systems that protect both people and the land. Ross leaves listeners to investigate their own connections to the land and to consider the many ways it is mediated by cultural and political intervention. Based in the Cascadian bioregion, Ross runs a passion project called Nerdy About Nature in which he shares fast-paced, fun, informative videos about nature and the world around us as a means of breaking down barriers to access factual science-based education, while providing critical insight and constructive conversation on environmental and social issues to encourage positive changes in this world to create a more diverse, inclusive, equitable and just future for us all.Music by Green-House courtesy of Leaving Records. Once a darling of the craft beer scene, Black IPAs or Cascadian dark ales, can be difficult to find today. History shows that Greg Noonan brewed Blackwatch IPA at the Vermont Pub and Brewery in Burlington, VT in the 1990's and the style would become part of the “IPAs of many colors movement” in the early 2010s. That time also saw interest in making and consuming white IPA and red IPAs. The success of Black IPA was short-lived and it fell to relative obscurity in the 2020's. While most breweries now are brewing hazy or west coast IPAs, some are giving the black IPA a chance. On this episode, we talk to two breweries still brewing this style and their reasons why, as well as brewing approach, history, and thoughts about this almost forgotten style. This Episode is Sponsored by:Estrella GaliciaEstrella Galicia is an independent, family-owned brewery in northwest Spain, founded in 1906.Estrella Galicia Cerveza Especial is a world class lager, brewed using the finest Spanish malts, locally cultivated Galician hops and the best brewing practices, in a state-of-the-art facility in La Coruña . Do you ever stop to think about the dirt under your feet, or in this case the rock, and wonder how it got there? Well the answer is...complicated, but basically billions of years of intense geological and mechanical processes from erosion to volcanism and everything in between. In this episode, I sit down with Pierre Freile, an award-winning geoscientist based in Squamish BC to chat all about how the landscape of North America and the Cascadian Bioregion in particular were formed, from the macro-scale actions of continents moving and colliding with one another, to the localized impacts of landslides that took place thousands of years ago, and rockfalls in our neighbourhoods just a few years ago. This one may be a doozy of an information blast, but I promise you it's worth it, and it will give you a profound appreciation for the lands on which we live, and the forces that shaped them into what they are. Guest Vagrant Cascadian Panelist Richard Littauer Show Notes Hello and welcome to Sustain! Richard is in Portland at FOSSY, the Free and Open Source Software Yearly conference that is held by the Software Freedom Conservancy. In this episode, Richard invites guest Vagrant Cascadian to delve into the world of Reproducible Builds. Vagrant walks us through his role in the project where the aim is to ensure identical results in software builds across various machines and times, enhancing software security and creating a seamless developer experience. Discover how this mission, supported by the Software Freedom Conservancy and a broad community, is changing the face of Linux distros, Arch Linux, openSUSE, and F-Droid. They also explore the challenges of managing random elements in software, and Vagrant's vision to make reproducible builds a standard best practice that will ideally become automatic for users. Vagrant shares his work in progress and their commitment to the “last mile problem.” Hit download now to hear more! [00:00:47] Vagrant talks about their work at Reproducible Builds and details their responsibilities, including removing timestamps from Debian packages to enable reproducibility and maintaining infrastructure on ARM-based machines. [00:02:25] Why do reproducible builds matter? Well, they allow verification that the source code matches the binary code that runs on a computer, enhancing security and preventing potential exploits. Also, they are important in scientific principles and for developers during code refactoring. [00:03:41] The Reproducible Project is made up of a few developers under the Software Freedom Conservancy, but also includes a large community working on different projects. The project receives funding from various grants and sometimes corporate sponsors. [00:05:56] We hear about the challenge of managing random elements in software to achieve reproducible builds. Vagrant talks about their goal to make reproducible builds a standard best proactive in the industry, benefitting software users. [00:08:27] Vagrant shares their challenge in educating people about reproducible builds while also trying to make it a standard practice. [00:09:09] How can open source projects help? They can help by setting up reproducibility testing in their continuous integration frameworks. [00:10:24] Richard asks how large companies can benefit from and contribute to reproducible builds. Vagrant mentions how companies like Google find value in reproducible builds as it saves time, energy, and money by not having to rebuild things when they know they don't have to. [00:11:56] Vagrant mentions that they're in the proof of concept phase of making Debian 96% reproducible, which includes over 30,000 source packages and over 50,000 binary packages. Richard asks about the project's expected completion date, which Vagrant responds it's his last mile problem to some degree, but they're close. Support, Socials, Website, and everything ATT here: https://linktr.ee/alientheoristspodcastOn December 10, 1946 one of the worst aviation disasters in U.S. history occurred on the slopes of Mt. Rainier. Six transport planes departed from San Diego, California en route to Seattle carrying between them more than 200 U.S. Marines. While flying over southwestern Washington, the aircraft all encountered heavy weather and were forced to navigate solely by instruments. Only 1 of the 6 aircraft actually made it to the Seattle airport which had been their destination. 4 had turned back and landed in Portland while the last transport vanished. A two week search over air and ground turns up nothing. The military offers up a $5000 reward for information regarding the wrecked plane. In June of that year, while flying around Mt. Rainier in search of the wreckage, one man would sight something much more unusual than a downed aircraft. He would have an encounter that would, as some might argue, kicked off the age of modern UFO sightings. It's been a great weekend for the Whitecaps as both their MLS and MLS Next Pro teams came up with big wins. We delve into all of that and more, in what was a very important win for Vancouver. We also look ahead to Wednesday's Canadian Championship clash with CPL side Valour FC and hear the thoughts of Vanni Sartini and Tosaint Ricketts ahead of the match, plus we catch up with Phil Dos Santos who is looking to be on the other end of a Vancouver cup shock this time around. Plus after Seattle Sounders' success in the CONCACAF Champions League, we look at how the Whitecaps have fallen so far behind their Cascadian rivals and we chat about some interesting developments in lower league Canadian soccer. On this episode, Jen Otis, co-owner of KVLT, sits down with the GCP guys. KVLT Mead is Tacoma's first meadery with a mead taproom! Each batch is hand-crafted and produced on-site with premium and local ingredients, including PNW Clover Honey, PNW sourced fruits, and Cascadian glacial waters. She and her fellow co-owner are rabid consumers of metal music and wanted a place of their own to celebrate their love of metal music and the culture that surrounds it. KVLT is located at 5011 S Washington St in Tacoma; visit their website, kvltmead.com, for operating hours. 00:00 – Brogan kicks off the episode talking about having to work the day before, Justin and Brogan compare their boat shoes, and Brogan talks about how easy it was to find them. Jen shares where KVLT is located, explains what mead is, and what mead's primary fermentable sugar is. She talks about how mead products are never exactly the same, the agriculture component to honey, and how more mead makers are entering the market. Justin talks about his first introduction to mead, Jen talks about what got her into making mead, and they reference Tacoma as the Oakland of Washington. 13:01 – Jen shares how mead in the PNW is often Viking-themed, her love of metal music, and Justin reflects on growing up on Jagermeister and Highlife. He talks about getting introduced to the drink Starry Night, Jen talks about the cost of the bottles, and how they commission local artists to design the art on their bottles. She talks about it being slow to catch on in the community, how she likes the idea of the business growing organically, and how she works to keep a positive atmosphere at the taproom. 26:35 – Jen talks about how difficult it was to open a business in Tacoma, the amount of taxes tied to selling alcohol, and their plans to open to the Oregon market. Brogan talks about the ease for Washington to sell alcohol in Oregon and how hard it is for Oregon to sell alcohol to Washington. She talks about the events she's doing in the area, hosting the traveling dark art market Market of The Beast, and the metal-themed belly dancing coming up at KVLT. 37:25 – Scott talks about the history behind The Clown Hotel in Nevada, Jen talks about suffering from sleep paralysis, and starting a new music project. She explains the meaning behind the name of her latest project, being involved in the Doom Hags on Facebook, and they talk about their favorite metal bands. Jen discusses the great metal bands in the PNW and closes out this podcast sharing the bands performing that night at KVLT. Thanks, Jen, for joining the podcast and sharing your love for mead and metal! Special Guest: KVLT MEAD.
On this episode, number 42, myself and Aaron Weaver discuss his band Wolves In The Throne Room's latest album 'Primordial Arcana' along with the spiritual mindset he, his brother Nathan and guitarist Kody Keyworth apply to making their art. Since the bands first release in 2006 (Diadem Of 12 Stars) WITTR have made incredibly atmospheric and magickal black metal in the Cascadian scene of Americas north west...Very quickly we get into talking about the process of channelling art and music that rises as a current from the landscape they live within. We talk about rising through the Olympia Washington punk rock scene of the 90's, through to the recording of this newest record. Its a great episode and Aaron is a very cool and erudite musician and it was a pleasure to finally get to talk with an artist who's work I have loved and supported on my radio show for many years. The album is available now via Relapse Records / Century Media / Artemisia Records. Please go and listen now if you haven't already, it's really brilliant...
