Musician and journalist Jessi Phillips joins us to sing the praises of John David Souther. Best known for writing songs for other artists such as the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt, JD (as he is better known) possessed a pleasant and unique singing voice that could have made him a star in his own right. We discuss why that never quite happened as we listen to his second solo album.   If you like us, please support us at patreon.com/idbuythatpodcast to get exclusive content (episodes on 45s!), or tell a friend about us. Finis Smith is riding high on the success of his debut single, "Ain't Love Grand," but he's proving that he's not a one-hit wonder with his latest release, a stirring cover of J.D. Souther's 1979 classic, "You're Only Lonely." The original song was a Billboard Top Ten hit, and Smith's rendition pays beautiful homage to Souther's songwriting while infusing it with his own unique style. For fans of classic country, this track is a welcome reminder of the genre's roots, but with a modern twist that makes it feel new and vibrant all over again. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wewriteaboutmusic/support

A note from Bill: Rich says I'm too modest about discussing my Acting career - could be. But, today I have a story that I felt compelled to share about my "brush with greatness" with one of the greatest American actors of the 20th century: the titanic James Earl Jones, in a Shakespearean production of the rarely produced Timon of Athens. It's one thing to work with an awesome talent, - and I've stood toe to toe with a bunch of Academy, Tony, and Emmy award winners -, but the heat coming off from this icon gave me one of the most fundamental and profound experiences of my early theatrical education.  Rich and I also welcome a few other recent check-ins to the Hotel Bohemia: the magnificent Cissy Houston (mom to Whitney); Linda Ronstadt's talented songwriting protege J.D. Souther, and the one and only Kris Kristofferson.  "He's a poet, he's a picker, he's a prophet, he's a pusher, he's a pilgrim and a preacher, and a problem when he's stoned. He's walkin' contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction, takin' every wrong direction on his lonely way back home" (He claimed the song was not written about himself, but isn't every song... at least a little bit?)

The Verdict (1982) tells the story of down-on-his-luck Boston lawyer, Frank Galvin (Paul Newman). Galvin had been a rising star until he was framed for jury tampering by a partner at his elite Boston law firm because he planned to expose the firm's illegalities. Galvin left the firm and his marriage and career fell apart. After Galvin hits rock bottom, his former partner and friend Mickey Morrisey (Jack Warden) sends him a medical malpractice case as a favor; the case involves a botched delivery and is expected to settle out of court for a significant sum. But Galvin is moved after visiting the woman in the hospital, where he sees her in a comatose state. Galvin refuses the settlement offer and takes the case to trial, where he confronts the hospital's high-powered and corrupt attorney Ed Concannon (James Mason) and a hostile judge (Milo O'Shea), Galvin also has a romantic relationship with another attorney, Laura Fischer (Charlotte Rampling) whom he meets in a bar but, unbeknownst to him, is a spy planted by Concannon. Galvin discovers the hospital is covering up its negligence. Although the judge excludes this evidence, Galvin wins a huge damage award as the jury sees the truth. The Verdict was directed by Sidney Lumet and written by David Mamet, adapted from Barry Reed's 1980 novel of the same name. It is a gripping courtroom drama and a moving story of redemption. The White Rock Enduro was exactly what I was looking for in a technical enduro. The roads were dusty, but the rocks and roots in the trail were still slick as all get out.I was on row 28 again, this time following Dylan Souther from Colorado. We went back and forth all day. When it got tight, I would catch and pass him. The other times, he would either out ride me, or I would crash myself into oblivion.Run Time on the Sherco at the 2024 White Rock Enduro was 4:28 & the miles were at 67.6. I was 12th Overall and 4th in the 40A Class. Fast old dudes, I LOVE IT!P.S. I don't know that I want to race this event when it's wet and/or raining. I probably should though, so I can find a way to overcome the fear of having to attempt a few hillclimbs more than once.Tip: Gummy trail tire next time for sure!Check out the video on the Seat Time Youtube channel for more good times!Support the show

1974 - November: Linda Ronstadt "Heart Like a Wheel"

What the Riff?!?

Linda Ronstadt's fifth solo studio album would be her breakout one.  Heart Like a Wheel is a folk/country/rock mixture of covers and originals, and was the last album Ronstadt released on the Capitol Records label after she had moved to Asylum records.  It would reach the top of the Billboard 200, spend 51 weeks on the chart, and fuel Ronstadt's rise to the first "arena class" female rock star.Linda Maria Ronstadt is the third of four children born to a family of Mexican and German descent and a long history in Arizona.  Her professional start is considered to be the folk rock trio called the Stone Poneys, who had a hit in 1968 with the song "Different Drum."  Ronstadt is famous for touring in the early 70's with a backing band that included Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner - artists who would go on to form the Eagles.  Her four earlier albums produced only moderate success before her fortune turned dramatically upward with "Heart Like a Wheel."While Ronstadt's style is often referred to as country rock, she called it "Mexican bluegrass" in 1968.  Over time she would record songs in a variety of styles from rock to folk and country, including some Spanish language songs and even rock songs reimagined as lullabies.  Her ability to cross genres contributed both to her success and her share of criticism from those expecting something different.  Success did not always agree with her, as she felt she was encouraged to project a tough rock image that did not accurately reflect her true self.  Linda Ronstadt was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, shortly after her retirement from music in 2011.Bruce presents this breakthrough country rock album in this week's podcast. I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You)This cover was originally written and recorded by Hank Williams back in 1951.  It went to number 2 on the Billboard country singles chart back then.  A bunch of people have covered this song, but Ronstadt's cover is the most successful, going to number 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and winning her a Grammy in 1976 for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. You're No GoodThe first single released from the album went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It is a cover of a song written by Clint Ballard Jr. and first performed by Dee Dee Warwick in 1963.  The success of this "glad to be broken up" song would set the template for Ronstadt over the next five years of doing remakes of classic rock and roll songs.Faithless LoveAn original recording rather than a cover, this deeper cut was written by J.D. Souther, who wrote or co-wrote songs for both Ronstadt and the Eagles.  It would hit number 10 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart when Glen Campbell covered it in 1984. Willin'This song was first performed by Little Feat and was written by their front man, Lowell George.  Ronstadt's cover was used in James Cameron's film "The Abyss" in 1989.  Lowell wrote this song while he was a member of the Mothers of Invention. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Dance of the Reed Flutes (from the nature documentary "Animals Are Beautiful People")In addition to its frequent use in the Christmas ballet "The Nutcracker," this piece was also used in the nature documentary STAFF PICKS:Whatever Gets You Through the Night by John LennonLynch kicks off the staff picks with a song originally inspired by Lennon's habit of late night channel surfing.  He caught the phrase from Reverend Ike, an evangelist on TV, and turned it into this song.  It went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Lennon got Elton John to provide the vocal duet for this song, and in return Lennon appeared onstage with John during his Thanksgiving concert at Madison Square Garden - one of his last major live appearances.I Can Help  by Billy SwanWayne brings us a song we all thought was performed by Ringo Starr.  Billy Swan was better known as a country songwriter than a solo artist, but this single would be his sole number 1 hit.  It is a particularly positive song, with a nice reprise at the end of the album cut.Must of Got Lost by the J. Geils Band Rob features an early hit from the J. Geils Band, reaching number 12 on the charts.  It has a funky hook, and a grammatically incorrect title, with lyrics that explore why a relationship went wrong.Wishing You Were Here by ChicagoBruce closes out the staff picks with a song off the Chicago VI album.  Chicago gets some assistance from the Beach Boys, who contribute to the backing vocals on this song about missing the one you love while on the road with a touring band. COMEDY TRACK:Wildwood Weed by Jim StaffordWe finish off with a story in song about that whacky tobackey in a country setting

Hamilton Souther is a Master Ayahuasca Shaman, founder and Chairman of Blue Morpho retreats, and an important voice in Amazonian sustainability and conservation. In this fascinating episode he shares his original calling and experience with ayahuasca, as well as his intense apprenticeship and training process while living deep in the Amazon jungle. Hamilton describes how we are in a unique time of convergence regarding consciousness, technology and cultural change. We discuss ayahuasca's healing potential which may include treating depression, trauma, PTSD, physical pain, ailments and more. We also discuss the neo-shamanic revolution and the role of plant medicine in the awakening of humanity, and icaros - the magical language and song of the shaman. Hamilton shares the importance of integration following ceremony and suggested supportive practices as well as his personal journey working through duality and fear-based consciousness. He talks of the shaman's skills in facilitating ceremony such as holding safe space, keeping the group field grounded and navigating perception in different realms and visionary states. We discuss the range of effects of ayahuasca such as purging, communication with nature, various psychic phenomena, accessing higher dimensions, visions of sacred geometry and the experience of spiritual unity or oneness. He shares how ayahuasca may be viewed as an accelerant to personal transformation and can integrate contemplative and shamanic practices. We also cover the current legalization process of traditional shamanic medicines and the ethical considerations about harvesting versus growing this sacred medicine. Hamilton studied shamanism in California, Cusco, and the Amazon and was given the title of Master Shaman after apprenticing with Torres Davila and Julio Jlerena Pinedo. He has a Bachelors degree in Anthropology and is an experienced entrepreneur with interest in quantum computing, synthetic biology, renewable use permaculture and agricultural development. The New York Times has said of him, “As the only full-fledged gringo shaman in the Peruvian Amazon, Souther is a natural interpreter for tourists navigating the mysteries of traditional Indian culture and its sacred plants."www.bluemorphotours.comLiked what you heard? Charlie welcomes preacher, speaker, and pastor, John Amanchukwu, Sr., LIVE from Freedom Night at Dream City Church in Phoenix, Arizona. Pastor Amanchukwu is also author of the upcoming book, "Eraced: Uncovering the Lies of Critical Race Theory and Abortion" and that's exactly what Charlie and John discuss. Pastor Amancchukwu, a true Souther preacher, holds nothing back in a full-throated indictment of woeness, the LGBTQ agenda, and the "black genocide" of abortion in the black community that is killing 900 babies a day.
