A Runner's High; My Life in Motion is the story of Dean Karnazes' return to Western States 100 in his 50's, at a time when he is also wondering about the future of his running career. He is waitlisted, so doesn't feel the motivation to train. As he gets to within only a few months of race day, Dean enters a 100k race to kick off his training. Throughout the book Dean reminisces about the past, talks about his family and how they have supported him throughout his life and his running career, and recounts anecdotes about people he meets during ultras. Who is Dean Karnazes? What do you mean you don't know about Dean Karnazes?! Well we would need a whole podcast just to list all of his accomplishments so we've listed only a few things from his resume. Dean has run 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days, he has run across Death Valley in the middle of summer, he has run a marathon to the South Pole, and he has run a 200 mile relay race solo. He has also won the Badwater Ultramarathon, known as the toughest race on earth, and the 4 Deserts Challenge, which involves racing in the hottest, driest, windiest and coldest places on earth. As an author, has authored and co-authored several books. The most well know is probably Ultramarathon Man, but he also wrote a book with Matt Fitzgerald called 50/50; Secrets I Learned Running 50 Marathons In 50 Days. Dean is a graduate of the USF McLaren School of Business & Management, and an accomplished businessman with a notable professional career working for several Fortune 500 companies and startups. If you would like to get a copy of A Runner's High, you can find it on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0062955500/ref=as_li_tl?camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0062955500&ie=UTF8&linkCode=as2&linkId=252d4b253b1a1b91081199045e5cde61&tag=ultramarathon-20If you would like to tour Greece while running, check our Dean's website to find out more about his running tour of Greece at https://www.greekrunningtours.comYou can also find out more about Dean and find links to all his social media by going to his website https://ultramarathonman.com  Support the showAny feedback or suggestions on this review or any of our other podcast episodes would be greatly welcomed. We're so excited to welcome Dean Karnazes to this episode of The BibRave Podcast! Dean is someone we've known about for a long time but have only recently gotten to know. In short, this man is a fountain of youth (which we discuss) and his latest book has so much to offer ALL types of runners or athletes. Dean's newest book, A Runner's High isn't a book about Dean's long-distance running exploits (of which there are MANY), nor is it a book promoting distance running. But it is about the struggle of aging as our minds and bodies come into conflict, and we talk a lot about these kinds of conflicts (especially where biological age and chronological age divert). Dean is an amazing guy with so many great stories, and he's truly one of the best ambassadors for our sport. We hope you check out A Runner's High and that you enjoy this episode! This week's episode is sponsored by Ultima Replenisher! Who doesn't love Coconut Pina Colada, Appletini, and Peach Bellini flavors… especially during the summertime?! You're going to want to try Ultimas Mocktini Pack that includes all those flavors to keep you hydrated. You'll receive 20% off when you sign up for the newsletter at ultimateplenisher.com! This week's episode is also sponsored by Athletic Brewing - your new fav non-alcoholic beer! As runners, we love to plan our long runs on the weekends… but we'd also like to enjoy a cold one or two! This podcast is so aptly named after one of my absolute FAVOURITE phrases Amy uses in her incredible - beyond incredible - Barry’s bootcamp classes.  Amy is an absolute hero: her physical (and mental!) feats are insane and the way she pours that motivation, inspiration and love into her clients, friends and quite frankly anyone she supports is WILD.  Not only kicking our asses in the 8:20 crew (if you know, you know), burning our asses in Pilates, and motivating the absolute shit out of us all during lockdown.. Amy if it wasn’t for you, I would not have worked out HALF as much during this mental phase of life. Thank you!! On this week's episode we welcome the ultramarathon man himself, Dean Karnazes to the show. Dean regales with stories from his illustrious running career, with includes discovering his love for the sport after running for 30+ miles on his 30th birthday. He also talks about competing in the Badwater Ultra, running across the Atacama Desert in South America, and provides a history lesson about the first ultramarathon from Greek history. Smart, funny, self-deprecating, and incredibly charming, it is easy to see how Dean helped bring ultrarunning more into the mainstream. We're lucky to have him as a guest.  Before jumping into our interview, Dave and Kraig first share some Adventure News with an update on the current status of the climbing season on Everest, a story about an ocean rower who is training for 12-days straight in his garage, and a crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in floating cars that took place 20 year ago. Later, as part of their weekly Gear Picks segment, Dave reviews the Mountainsmith Slingback camp chair, while Kraig offers his thoughts on the Lander Kiva headlamp.  Show Notes: Books By Dean Karnazes on Amazon: Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner Run!: 26.2 Stories of Blisters and Bliss 50/50: Secrets I Learned Running 50 Maratons in 50 Days The Road to Sparta YouTube Video: Ultramarathon Man: 50 marathons in 50 states, in 50 days Watch Ocean Rower Phil Kite train in his garage Crossing the Atlantic Ocean in a floating car

In this episode, I interview Nikki Love, an extraordinary person who lives by three words -- love, fun, and adventure. Listen in as she talks about her adventures and what drives her to take the challenge of breaking the world record running across Australia. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/topic/podcasts/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Nikki’s adventures and the life of running Moving to England and building a new life Gearing up for different marathon events The books and the people that became Nikki’s influences What drives Nikki to keep challenging herself Battling insecurities and nagging fears What Nikki does to train mentally How Nikki juggles between being a mother, running a business, and going on adventures Key Takeaways: To make things happen, you have to start working on things to create the life that you want. You don’t always have to listen to other people when they try to talk you out of a challenge. Sometimes you only have to listen to yourself and find your own dreams. If what you can do helps other people, there’s more purpose to it. Working on your mental toughness is essential when preparing for marathons. Action Steps: Give yourself a goal or a target, and then do it. Know your purpose and your bigger WHY. Keep a journal of what you’re going to do, but write them in the past tense. In this way, when you read it, you’re reinforcing to your subconscious that you’ve already done it. Nikki said: “Life throws things at you, and when things are thrown at you, you start thinking, ‘Maybe I can’t do this. Maybe I’m pushing just one step too far.’ But then I have to think again about why it is that I’d want to give it a go in the first place.” “You have to work out what it is that you genuinely want. And if that means that you journal that lifestyle that you want, then eventually you will start making the decisions and the choices to implement the results that you want.” Thanks for listening! In this episode, you follow my progress on the Roller Coaster Run in the Mt. Dandenong Ranges. As I run through, you hear some of my personal experiences and struggles and how I turn those into lessons that can translate to everyday life. While running through, there were definitely ups and downs but some of the main bullet points of what you can take away from this episode are: 1. Push through negativity. In any case, there will be positive aspects you can take away... whether it be lessons on how to cope better, becoming stronger, or finding out that you have more inside you than you thought. 2. Live in the moment and savour the moment. Take in those moments in your life that you are going through. Mindfully take mental snapshots by taking a deep breath and acknowledging what is going on around you. 3. Pay the positivity forward! Form positive bonds with everyone you can. Whatever positivity you find, try to help others to enjoy it as well. You have the power to help people on their journey. 3. Always keep going! The end will make all the struggles worth it. Getting to that victory position will make worth all of the trials and tribulations that you go through on the way.
