Do you have favorite TV jingles heard during your childhood still stuck in your head decades later? For me the unshakable melody originated as my BFF Jeff and I proudly performed the Sparkletts Water “song” in front of a riveted crowd… aka our parents. If you've ever wondered about the type of person who could come up with those quick, catchy tunes, I've got you covered. Wendy Miller knows a thing or two about TV and jingles and even parodies because she's written hundreds of them. An Emmy-winning producer of over 200 television episodes, she hosts Sex Ed The Musical, was the former programming head for Playboy TV, and is my very special guest on the Storytelling School Podcast today. In our action packed conversation, we explore why companies use jingles in their marketing and we dig into Wendy's personal process for creating jingles and episodes. During our interview, Wendy shares her writing process, we discuss using comedy in storytelling, and she brings us behind the curtain in her working with Wayne Brady (one of my all time favorite performers). Wendy also talks about her producing career (including a very short-lived stint on Oprah's show) just before we segue into a little risqué territory about her time at Playboy TV and an encounter of the (almost) close kind with adult film star Nina Hartley. What you will learn in this episode: How to deal with the inner jerk in your headspace How to incorporate comedy into your stories What ingredient you need to make an outstanding story Who is Wendy? Wendy Miller is an author, speaker, podcast host, television producer, relationship expert, and ACS Certified Sexologist. She's been a panelist, moderator, and speaker at Sexual Health Expo and as the ex-Head of Programming at Playboy TV, she created and produced seven seasons of sex-positive, premium programming for adults. Her work has been featured in major publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, Variety, Ebony, and more. Wendy has comedic chops as well. She's won the Lite Beer National Comedy Search and has written, produced, and directed The Wayne Brady Show in addition to content for Paramount, Fox, NBC, The Tonight Show, Oxygen, Lifetime, The Oprah Show, and others. Currently, she lives in Los Angeles with her husband and teenage daughter. You’re in the throes of passion. Looking to add a whole new level to your pleasure, you want your favorite sex toy. Maybe there are kids in the house so you keep it stashed away behind those pants you’ll never fit into on the top shelf of your closet. Your partner goes hunting for it, they’re taking a long time, with every second you’re losing your mojo. They can’t find it. They’re yelling for you from the closet. Where is it?!?! You’re getting angry. GAHHHHH! Orrrrrr, you think you’re slick and you keep your favorite vibrator in your nightstand drawer. Annnnnnd, you’re probably not washing it after every use but who cares, it’s just you using it and it’s totally fine in there, right? Uh, no. That drawer is filled with used hair ties, old Starbucks cards, throat lozenges, a backstage pass from a Duran Duran concert and a thick layer of dust, germs, and crust. THIS IS NOT CUTE and you are asking for all sorts of trouble if you’re not storing your pleasure products correctly. But how??? On this episode, I interview Deborah Semer, the founder of Joyboxx, the world’s only hygienic sex toy storage system. Guess what, it’s not easy starting a sex product company — especially when the product is also designed to protect your health, well-being and privacy. That’s a lot for one thing to do. How did this journey take Deborah from an altruistic career in the non-profit world to sprawling sex toy factories in China? Why is this product unlike anything that’s ever been to market before? And why is a dusty shoe box from under some dude’s bed part of her origin story? You’re about to find out. If you’re interested in innovative pleasure products, best practices for storing for your sex toys, how to ward off nasty germs in the time of COVID or badass women who take big risks in starting their own companies, this episode is for you! Plus, as the first sponsor of the show, Joyboxx is offering you a special 20% discount on your order. Order here and use the discount code SEXED20 for a 20% discount. Joyboxx is a game changer and I really believe in it. Trust me, I hate everything. For more information, you can check out the Joyboxx YouTube channel where you can find a clip of me first discovering the product at Sexual Health Expo six years ago. Also, check out their Instagram for really fun stuff. PENIS OWNERS! We’re doing a show on first boners and we need your funny/mortifying stories.
