Loose Ends this week is all about finding the light. Poet, performer and broadcaster Michael Rosen is touring a one man show making sense of some of the darker moments of his life. Dylan Jones was the editor of era-defining magazines like i-D, Arena and British GQ in the 1990s and noughties. Now his memoir, These Foolish Things - tells how he left behind a difficult childhood to embrace a career that encompasses hobnobbing with celebrities from Elton John to Tracey Emin, taking phone calls from David Bowie and recommending a tailor to Gordon Brown. There's dark themes too to the Texan comedian Kemah Bob's new show Miss Fortunate which tells the story of a disastrous solo trip to Thailand. It was hailed as "chest-achingly funny" and "charismatic" by the critics and won her a Best Newcomer nomination at Edinburgh Festival Last year. The actress Barbara Flynn knows how to pick her projects, appearing in Cracker, Cranford and now the BBC's hit drama Beyond Paradise where cosy crime meets health concerns, heated relationships and family niggles. With music by the winner of Channel 4's talent show The Piano Brad Kella, who is about to tour with Take That's Gary Barlow and the folk singer and protest song writer Grace Petrie.Presented by Stuart Maconie Produced in Salford by Olive Clancy

In this episode of Style DNA I go on a style journey with one of the original YouTubers Jim Chapman. It's hard to believe that that was only 15 years ago and yet it feels, to me at least, like half a life time ago. I am showing my age now, but when I was Gen Z age the internet didn't even exist and we were consuming our news the old fashioned way…via a printed newspaper or on television, now online is the primary source of news information. So it is not surprising that characters like Jim Chapman achieved such a massive following so quickly…it was a moment in time and by his own admission it happened by accident. But as one of the original ‘content creators' he has also carved out a role as a high-profile brand ambassador, presenter and writer. He has amassed an audience of over 7.5 million people across social media, has written for various publications, including British GQ, and is a published author.Jim graduated in psychology but wanted a creative outlet, so he turned to creating content and posting it on YouTube, inspired by his sisters the makeup artists PixiWoo who had started to post makeup tutorials. In terms of building a following it was a unique moment in history, it was new and exciting with very few people doing it and followers were  truly organic. By the time Instagram was launched he was ready to pounce on it. Over the years his audience has not only grown, but grown up with him. With a psychology degree under his belt of course we talk about how we message through clothes. He grew up in Norfolk and his stylish mum ran a second hand clothes shop … he always had an opinion on what she wore but he also talks about how he has blanked out his abusive father's style (unsurprisingly). We talk about the next chapter in the world of Social Media …there are so many issues with it. He has concerns about the fact that the platforms are drawing us all in to get that tiny hit of dopamine as we scroll but as he says, that hit is net negative as you are not doing anything that is constructive, which actually makes people less happy. He is hopeful that there will ultimately be legislation around usage and the need to register your identity so that no-one can post anonymously…idealistic perhaps, but well-meaning for sure.I am always fascinated by how men approach clothes versus women…I hope you enjoy this episode. Thank you@jimchapman for being such a great guest.

We have a bonus episode of Soundtracking today, brought to you by our very good friends at BMW, marking the release of Deadpool & Wolverine. For the past 6 years, BMW have worked incredibly closely with British GQ magazine to help celebrate heroic figures who shape society, culminating in the wonderful GQ Heroes summit, which happens once a year in the Oxfordshire countryside. It's a few days where the world's most interesting and inspiring minds, game-changers and radical creatives come together to share big ideas with a very small and intimate group of people.  We were extremely honoured to be asked back this year - not only to listen to legends of the entertainment industry, design icons, activists and so much more, but also catch up with the trailblazing talent that is Emma Corrin. Emma can be seen playing the role of Cassandra Nova in Deadpool & Wolverine, which is on general release now.  Emma is someone who uses her platform as a voice for so many, in turn giving people the strength to find a voice of their own. This was all the more special for Edith as she was lucky to have conducted their first ever interview, months before anyone had seen them play the role that catapulted them onto television screens around the world - a young Princess Diana in the Crown.

"Whitelined" Formed in Barnum, Colorado in the early oughts by pals Ryan Policky and Erik Jeffries, A Shoreline Dream wasted no time in establishing themselves as a band to be reckoned with. No scruffy apprentice years here--albums like Avoiding The Consequences and Losing Them All To This Time were fully formed blasts of bruising guitars drenched in pure sonic muscle. Not only that, but lurking behind the sheets of fuzz was an undeniable pop center that, nearly twenty years later has never sounded more assured. The follow-up to their brilliant 2022 Loveblind album is called Whitelined and not only is it a masterpiece of musical architecture, and swerving beauty, it's got a little backstory. The fellas in A Shoreline Dream happened to meet Ride's Mark Gardener at a Denver gig and a friendship turned into a working relationship as well and the ideas started whipping back and forth and this album is a perfect blend of their musical union. Is she alone in this or is it the next iteration of diet culture disguised as wellness?  Pop music is dominating 2024 but not everyone agrees. We discuss two pieces with differing opinions. One is for British GQ titled How Pop Music Got Its Personality Back by Daisy Jones. The latter is for the Wall Street Journal and is titled Why Pop Music Is So ‘Meh' Right Now by Neil Shah. We also reference an ep from Pandora Sykes' podcast Doing It Right titled How Tech Flattened Personal Taste, With Kyle Chayka.  Charli XCX and Taylor Swift battled it out for the UK's number one album last week. The Retail Pilot

On this Flight of The Retail Pilot Ken speaks with LEGEND, Tommy Hilfiger, Principal Designer, Tommy Hilfiger Global.Uplifting and inspiring consumers since 1985, Tommy Hilfiger has pioneered one of the world's most recognized premium lifestyle brands. With Hilfiger's vision and leadership as Principal Designer, his eponymous brand celebrates the essence of classic American style with a modern twist. Tommy Hilfiger offers premium quality and value to consumers worldwide under the TOMMY HILFIGER and TOMMY JEANS lifestyles, with a breadth of collections including men's, women's and kids' sportswear, denim, accessories, and footwear.Hilfiger's career in fashion began when he was a high school student in 1969 — opening his first store, People's Place, in his hometown of Elmira, New York. A decade later, he moved to Manhattan to pursue a career in fashion design, before launching his namesake brand with a single menswear collection. Since then, global retail sales of TOMMY HILFIGER products have grown to reach approximately $9.1 billion in 2022, powered by more than 16,000 associates worldwide — present in 100 countries and more than 2,000 retail stores, including its largest global flagship store at tommy.com.Hilfiger has a longstanding passion for philanthropy and making the world a better place for future generations. Through the global TommyCares organization, the brand supports various international initiatives and charities like Save the Children, the World Wildlife Fund and Fashion Minority Alliance. Hilfiger currently sits on the Board of Next for Autism. Through the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Frontier Challenge and People's Place Program, the brand is also making strides in its ambitious vision to create fashion that Wastes Nothing and Welcomes All – which actively focuses on topics such as social and environmental sustainability, diversity, and inclusivity in fashion and beyond.Diverse achievements in business and fashion have earned Hilfiger numerous distinguished awards including the CFDA's prestigious Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012, British GQ's Design Legend of the Year in 2020, BFC's Outstanding Achievement Award in 2021 and WWD's John B. Fairchild Honor for Lifetime Achievement in 2022. Hilfiger's life and career have been chronicled in his memoir, American Dreamer, published in November 2016 — reflecting his experiences in the fashion industry from the last 35-plus years. Recounting his early childhood and formative years, it explores the setbacks, triumphs, and sheer determination that drove him to build a multi-billion-dollar global brand.Key takeaways from this interview include:Tommy Hilfiger's Background: Tommy Hilfiger began his journey in retail and design at a young age, starting his own business at 18 years old by opening a retail store -People's Place - selling jeans in 1969. This venture eventually led him to designing and creating products for his stores, culminating in the establishment of his own brand.Innovative Store Concepts: Hilfiger's early stores, particularly People's Place, were not just retail outlets but cultural hubs influenced by music and fashion. They offered a variety of products, hosted band practices, and provided an immersive experience for customers, aligning with the youth culture of the time.Cultural Influences on Brand Identity: Hilfiger aimed to differentiate his brand from traditional preppy styles by infusing it with elements of music, particularly hip-hop, and embracing a more inclusive approach to fashion. This cultural fusion helped establish the personality of the Tommy Hilfiger brand.Disruptive Advertising Strategy: The Hangman ad campaign, conceived by advertising executive George Lois, was a bold and disruptive move that garnered attention for the brand. Despite initial criticism, the controversial campaign succeeded in sparking conversation and establishing Tommy Hilfiger as a distinctive player in the fashion industry.Strategic Partnerships and Growth: Strategic partnerships, such as those with Marjani International and later with Silas Chao and Lauren Stroll, played a crucial role in the brand's growth and expansion. These partnerships facilitated strategic decisions like expanding into Europe and launching successful product lines such as fragrances, contributing to the brand's success and eventual IPO.Archives and Relevance: Both Tommy Hilfiger and Karl Lagerfeld emphasized the importance of going back to fashion archives and making past designs relevant for today's market. This approach ensures a timeless appeal while staying fresh.Strategic Partnerships: The acquisition by Apex and subsequent sale to PVH provided strategic opportunities for Tommy Hilfiger's brand growth. Apex helped in repositioning the company, while PVH's ownership of other brands like Calvin Klein created synergies beneficial for both.Brand Positioning: The positioning of Tommy Hilfiger's brand differs between the US and Europe. Understanding regional customer preferences and pricing strategies is crucial for successful brand positioning.Design Process: Tommy Hilfiger's use of technology, such as 3D design, and the centralization of its design team in Europe contribute to a more efficient and precise design process. This enables faster response to market trends and ensures product quality.Marketing and Brand Communication: The brand utilizes a mix of influencer collaborations, celebrity endorsements, and unique marketing campaigns to amplify its brand message. Adam Baidawi stepped into the role of British GQ's head of editorial content in November 2021 at a time when the legacy men's fashion and lifestyle title was facing a crucial pivot point in its identity. Not only was Condé Nast reimagining its editorial and business strategy to be internationally structured, but the very idea of men's fashion and luxury was evolving from a singular ideal image to embracing individuality. Baidawi, who had been a lifelong fan of the title, was also serving as the deputy global editorial director of GQ, and helped lead the refresh of the brand, focusing first and foremost on new luxury and community. On the latest episode of the Digiday Podcast, Baidawi shared how he applied the “new luxury” mentality to the publication's social strategy, events business and video production, as well as how the shift to international operations strengthened the storytelling ability of GQ across the globe. In much of the developed world, waste is out of sight and out of mind. The world generates around 2 billion tons of municipal solid waste annually, with at least 33% of it not managed in an environmentally safe manner, according to a 2018 World Bank report. Though high-income countries only account for 16% of the world's population, they generate about 34% of the world's waste each year. A third of all food produced is wasted and ends up in the garbage can. Plastic waste is another mounting issue: Across the globe, less than 10% of it is recycled, according to the most recent data from 2018 published by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Plastic waste has more than doubled globally since 2000. More and more people are opting to remove their shoes before they come into the house and asking guests to do it as well. Is it really necessary? Does it do any good? This episode begins with a look at what your shoes actually track into your home and whether or not it is dangerous. https://www.sharp.com/health-news/should-shoes-be-removed-at-home When you throw something into the trash or the recycle bin, you likely feel confident that it goes where it is supposed to go. But does it? Where exactly does it go? Do the recyclables really get recycled? Is household trash really the problem or is there something else taking up most of the space in landfills? That is what Oliver Franklin-Wallis is here to discuss. He is an award-winning journalist and currently the features editor of British GQ. He is author of the book Wasteland: The Dirty Truth About What We Throw Away, Where It Goes, and Why It Matters (https://amzn.to/44S7Jpf). Whatever systems or techniques you use to keep your house clean are probably the ones you learned from your parents. Maybe it is time to question some of those techniques. Perhaps there is a better, more efficient – even fun way to clean. There is also a better way to think about housework, so it doesn't leave you feeling drained and feeling as if it never ends and is never good enough.  This is Superlative: A Podcast about watches, the people behind them, and the worlds that inspire them. This week our host and aBlogtoWatch Founder Ariel Adams is joined by author, journalist, and editor, Nicholas Foulkes. To start the show the two begin by discussing the North American watch market as well as what makes the watch industry unique in comparison to other industries of manufactured goods. They dive into Nick's introduction into watches and why the suits he wanted to wear influenced his watch interests. Ariel asks Nick how he was able to impress and demand respect from the brands and CEO's that he worked with in his career, and when he started to see the demographic of watch enthusiasts start to change over the decades. Nick talks about London in the 1970's and what collecting and watch enthusiasm was like during that time, and the two get into why brands seem to have an inability to track and tell their own brands history. As the discussion continues Ariel has our guest really jump into the different bodies of work and books that he has written over the years and what subjects he has written about, such as the early 19th century in England. Get ready. You can find Stealing Midnight (for $1.99!) at Amazon, B&N, Kobo, or Apple Books. We are thrilled to welcome Chels, the Reigning Monarch of Bodice Ripper TikTok, to the show today. You can also follow them on twitter and subscribe to their substack, The Loose Cravat.Wondering about those TikTok hit pieces we mentioned? Read the ones from British GQ and London Review of Books. It's a few years old, but this Wall Street Journal video is a great look at the mysterious TikTok algorithm and how quickly it will rabbit hole you, and a more recent piece from Vox about TikTok's recent promises to become more transparent, and another one from The Verge about how TikTok suppresses content from disabled users. The relationship between BookTok and bookselling is complex and difficult to parse because of the lack of transparency around book sales. Check out Where Is All the Book Data by Melanie Walsh, as well as how book-buying habits changed during the pandemic.Deloping is bad, actually! So If you'd like to learn more about duels, Chels recommends Pistols at Dawn by Richard Hopton and The Duel: A History of Duelling by Robert Baldick. Jen recommends this article about dueling from JSTOR Daily, or this one about American dueling in the Smithsonian, which led her to the Code Duello as one example for the rules of dueling.Speaking of moral panics, JSTOR Daily has a list of them! I told you it was a good site!Deuling in pop culture: check out The Duelists by Ridley Scott, this famous scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark, and of course, Hamilton. For some real historical duels, check out: The billiards balls duel, The topless lady duelers in Austria, additional ladies being badass, Humphrey Howarth the naked dueler, and Burr and Hamilton. Senator Brooks caning Senator Sumner on the Senate floor is another thing entirely.Glove Slap! Finally, check out this page from Loretta Chase's website which describes and links to several videos about the Singing bird pistols from Lord Lovedon's Duel.

Ariel and our guest start the show by talking about humans being fascinated by measuring time, and why the wrist watch became the most fashionable measuring instrument. Bill dives into his most recent book that he authored about the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and its 50th Anniversary, and he elaborates on one of his statements regarding Audemars Piguet being the only brand that could make something like the Royal Oak. When we go through particular things in life, we experience so much, and it does mess with the way that we think about the world and the way we see the world, especially when there's somebody who feels that they are absolutely powerless in a situation. That is one of the most crippling things.6:54 I can attest to that personally and it's not until you find your personal power that you can then become different and make a step and change things that you want to change. 8:06 What does it mean for men to be men today? What kind of, what element of masculinity do we bring forward? And as you see it across the world and in the cultural zeitgeist of the West right now, we're having a huge resurgence of what masculinity does for the world, what it does for us. So I'm asking all these questions and I feel like I owe it to myself to ask these questions.11:15 I had to write down all the things I believed about myself, that were inherently told to me, taught to me, expressed to me, whether that be directly or indirectly. And then how that has shown up in my life as an adult man. Right. And in doing all of that, I've really sat down and thought, “wow, all of these beliefs are not mine.” None of this is mine and I'm holding all of these things that so many people have put to me and said to me, and act it out towards me. So I had to go about trying to undo those beliefs. 12:47 I think that it's important to really think about those things. And that's where I would say to people, to really be able to look at really just kind of go and do, go and examine where these things come from and to spend time really having that honest conversation with yourself.16:53 Like we are taught to mask a lot of stuff, to hide a lot of stuff, to keep things inside. A progressive stance, say a protest around, for men would probably, a progressive one, would look like men being able to really fight for paternal rights or to really fight for emotional intelligence among boys, or to really fight for…those are the things that would really center in around men's progress. But, the kind of established network and structures of patriarchy and you know, I hate using this term, but the toxic side of masculinity inhibits us from being able to fight for that. So we move all of that energy away from ourselves and put it into things that are external to us. 18:08 So, the question for me is, where and when will we be able to, as men, really want to stand up for our own fight and healing, as men, and be able to allow and create this progress to then move forward together with everybody? Because obviously we intersect, we're human beings. We're on this earth together. 20:31 We have to have those conversations about consent. We have to have those conversations about safety and safe spaces. We have to have those conversations about oppressive language. Things that men are not taught to be careful about.21:52 We've had all these conversations but the real conversation that is upholding a lot of this and holding, trying to hold onto that oppressive night together, is masculinity and we're not having that conversation. And it's very difficult to some people, a lot of people don't want to have it.23:22 What's important to me is that we have, we have these conversations, we continue to have these conversations. And it's not about this whole thing, where you go in with one set of ideas and you should, and you hold onto these ideas for the rest of your time and having conversations. I'm open to knowing more and changing my mind and knowing different, right? I'm open to all of those perspectives and all these different things. Not everybody's going to agree that everyone's going to have the same perspective and same view, but that's the joy of a school being able to learn together and move together.23:57 my hope is that, and the one thing that matters most to me is that we get to a place where we can actually sit down and have a conversation that is progressive and can actually really push us, push us in a direction that is to change.Dear Mind, You Matter is brought to you by NOBU, a new mental health, and wellness app. To download NOBU, visit the app store or Google Play. This podcast is hosted by Allison Walsh  and Dr. Angela Phillips. This time on The Edge, a podcast by TAG Heuer, we’re joined by the deep-thinking freediver Arthur Guérin-Boëri. In March 2021 Guérin-Boëri smashed the world record for longest under-ice swim with a single breath by swimming 120 metres in Lake Sonnen in Finland, and when we spoke he was already preparing for his next challenge. In this truly inspirational conservation the Frenchman talks about sports therapy, the eternal quest for well-being, and Le Grand Bleu. Your host is Teo van den Broeke, Style Director at British GQ. Watch out - this is The Edge.

‼️ SPOILER WARNING ‼️ This episode contains spoilers in reference to the very successful Netflix show 'YOU'  Time Stamp begins at 21:20-37:07. After a short break, Hannah & Sydney are back to discuss their much-needed, week-long breather and how Mercury Retrograde affected them in their personal lives, as well as, some things they are very much looking forward to the future with their ever-growing podcast. The girls also address the very strange & almost cringey relationship between Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly, after Megan posted a bizarre Instagram caption with photos the couple posed for, during a photoshoot with British GQ. On top of that, Hannah & Sydney share their thoughts & feelings regarding the popular NETFLIX series 'YOU' and its newest installment (3) that was released earlier this month (October 21).  Finally, the girls give a major update on the Gabby Petito Case and the ongoing search for her fiancé Brian Laundrie. Brian disappeared on September 13th after telling his parents, Chris & Roberta, that he was going hiking at the Carlton Reserve in Sarasota, Florida. Ten days after his disappearance, Brian had a warrant out for his arrest for bank fraud, after he used his fiancee's (Gabby's) debit card following her death.During the month of October, we are continuing to donate our ad revenue to the Gabby Petito Foundation to help spread awareness for domestic violence.Resources for Domestic Violence:https://gabbypetitofoundation.org/https://www.thehotline.org/https://www.wrcsd.org/serviceshttp://helpsavethenextgirl.com/Hannah's YouTube Channel & Podcasthttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaUVlllQhr0sB_4rSslXdXAhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/history-with-hannah-k/id1572328783Affiliate Links:Coupon: 15% off $50Shop Maui Jim Sunglasses Best Sellers + Free Shipping & Free ReturnsNo vision benefits through work?
