Madlik Podcast – Torah Thoughts on Judaism From a Post-Orthodox Jew
In this week's episode of Madlik Disruptive Torah, we delve into a fascinating exploration of the tribal structure in biblical Israel. As we unpack the significance of the high priest's breastplate and its representation of the 12 tribes, we uncover a revolutionary social organization that challenges our modern understanding of politics and community. The High Priest's Breastplate: A Symbol of Unity and Representation At the heart of our discussion is the high priest's breastplate, described in Exodus 28. This ornate piece of priestly attire wasn't just a decorative element—it was a powerful symbol of the entire Israelite nation. The breastplate featured 12 precious stones, each engraved with the name of one of the tribes of Israel. This was a profound representation of a radical social structure God was establishing for His people. "The stone shall correspond in number to the names of the sons of Israel, 12 corresponding to their names. They shall be engraved like seals, each with its name for the 12 tribes." This description emphasizes a crucial point: every tribe had equal representation on the breastplate. There was no hierarchy, no favored position. Each tribe, regardless of size or perceived importance, had its place. Even one missing letter would render it unusable - every tribe mattered. A Radical Departure from City-State Politics To truly appreciate the revolutionary nature of this tribal structure, we need to contrast it with the prevailing political systems of the time. Citing the Biblical scholar Norman Gottwald, we contrast the Greek city-states, for instance, which were based on geographic boundaries and often had different religions and customs within each city. The Israelite tribal system, however, was something entirely different: 1. Unified Ideology: Despite being separate tribes, they were united by a single religious and ethical framework. 2. Primal Legal Community: The confederacy itself was the foundation of their legal system. 3. Military Cooperation: Tribes united for defense and conquest, as seen in various biblical accounts. 4. Social Responsibility: The system encouraged inter-tribal support, such as interest-free lending. This “retribalization” wasn't just different—it was radically egalitarian for its time. It provided a framework for diverse groups to coexist while maintaining their unique identities. The Levites: Glue of the Tribal Confederacy One of the most intriguing aspects of this system was the role of the Biblical narrative stories and the Levites. The shared stories of the Patriarchs and the Exodus created a mythical bond. Unlike the other tribes, the Levites didn't receive a territorial inheritance. Instead, they were scattered throughout the land, serving as idealogues, teachers, priests, and the connective tissue of the nation. The Levites acted as a neutral party, reinforcing the shared heritage and laws across all tribes. Relevance for Today: The Four Tribes of Modern Israel The brilliance of this ancient system becomes even more apparent when we consider its relevance to modern challenges. Former Israeli President Reuven Rivlin's speech about the "four tribes" of contemporary Israel—secular Jews, national religious, Arabs, and Haredim—echoes the challenges and opportunities of the biblical tribal structure. In a world where clear majorities are becoming increasingly rare, the biblical model offers insights into how diverse groups can coexist and cooperate without losing their distinct identities. What We Can Learn from the Tribal Confederacy 1. Equality in Representation: Every group, regardless of size, deserves a voice. 2. Unity Without Uniformity: Shared core values can coexist with diverse practices and beliefs. 3. Distributed Leadership: Preventing the concentration of power in a single group or location. 4. Interconnectedness: Creating systems that encourage interaction and mutual support between different communities. As we grapple with increasingly diverse and fragmented societies, the biblical tribal structure offers a compelling model for social organization. It challenges us to think beyond simple majorities and minorities, encouraging a more nuanced and inclusive approach to community building. Sefaria Source Sheet: https://www.sefaria.org/sheets/629914
Hey Brave Table fam!
Compelling communication about risks and necessary actions is of special interest throughout the Ten Across geography. As we continue to follow the course of recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area, we took a closer look at journalism on the ground-- reporters doing their best to convey urgent information at multiple and sometimes personal scales. On the heels the hottest 12 months in recorded history, parts of the Los Angeles metro burned during most of January. Ten months of abnormally dry conditions in the city were preceded by two very wet winters. Scientists refer to this increasingly common phenomenon as hydroclimate volatility or whiplash. It has been shown to be aggravated by climate change, and in Southern California, it creates the essential ingredients for large-scale wildfire. As inaugural director of the Annenberg Center for Climate Journalism and Communication at the University of Southern California, Allison Agsten's job is to study how the news media and other communication professionals are informing audiences of climate change risks and impacts. In 2023, we invited her to share this important work and to lead our Climate Communications workshop at our Ten Across Summit in Los Angeles. Allison is, unfortunately, also a recent survivor of the Palisades Fire conflagration. As her neighborhood burned and the media converged around her home last month, she conducted some research in real time by asking them whether their reports would cover the ways climate change influenced the disaster. In this episode, we'll hear what they had to say and what Allison believes this means for the future of climate journalism in the U.S. Related articles and resources: “What I Learned from LA Reporters Covering the Fires” (Allison Agsten, USC Annenberg Center for Climate Journalism and Communication blog) “The media needs to show how the climate crisis is fueling the LA wildfires” (The Guardian Opinion, January 16, 2025)“US Speaker suggests withholding disaster aid over California immigration policies” (9 News, January 23, 2025) “How partisan news outlets frame vested interests in climate change” (Journal of Environmental Management, February 2025) “Consuming cross-cutting media causes learning and moderates attitudes: A field experiment with Fox News viewers” (Center for Open Science, 2023) “What We Can Learn from the LA Fires with Char Miller” (Ten Across Conversations podcast, January 30, 2025) “Urban Expert Bill Fulton's Perspective of How LA Can Rebuild Following the Fires” (Ten Across Conversations podcast, January 15, 2025) “NOAA Meteorologists Reflect on This Year's Historic Atlantic Hurricane Season” (Ten Across Conversations podcast, November 22, 2024)

The Return of the King: Nebuchadnezzar's Rise and Fall and What We Can Learn from One of the Bible's Bad Guys.Isaiah says, “What sorrow for those who are wise in their own eyes and think themselves so clever” in Isaiah 5:21 (NLT). This verse could be used to describe Nebuchadnezzar's one of history's and the Bible's greatest bad guys. He was known for significant architectural projects, including the Hanging Gardens of Babylon (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) and the Ishtar Gate. He was also a great warrior who conquered Jerusalem, ended Judah's line of kings, destroyed Solomon's Temple, and exiled Judah's people to Babylon.Despite his evil record, he demanded people worship him or be killed, God moved in Nebuchadnezzar's life and showed us that "we must find our confidence in the life surrender to God and not in the one we build without him." We do the same thing when we grant God access to our life but do not give him control as King and Lord. Support the Show.

I framed the challenge of my conversation with Ben as having to simultaneously accomplish two objectives that are in tension: to pay serious attention to his book, which is primarily about a rather distant past, while also honoring the ethos of my podcast, which is about the present and recent present. And we needed to do it in a real way, not a phony “the great painters of the past still breathe vibrantly in the present” sort of way.I think we pulled it off, with flying colors, but I suppose that you, the listeners, will be the ultimate judge of that. The topic of the end times has fascinated people for centuries. In this podcast, we will explore what Jesus had to say about the end times and what we can learn from his teachings. In Matthew 24, Jesus gives a lengthy discourse about the end times. He warns his disciples about false prophets, wars and rumors of wars, famines, earthquakes, and persecution. He also speaks of the coming of the Son of Man, saying that no one knows the day or the hour of his return. In Mark 13, Jesus again speaks of the end times, warning his disciples to be on guard and to stay awake. He speaks of the coming of the Son of Man and the signs that will precede his return. In Luke 21, Jesus speaks of the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and the signs that will precede his return. He warns his disciples to be on guard and to not be weighed down by the worries of life. What We Can Learn from Jesus' Teachings? Episode 2 follows the introductory episode with a deeper dive into Salvage Anthropology and its origins. Academic study of Indigenous cultures in California trace back to scholars such as Franz Boas and Aleš Hrdlička. They were both proponents of what was called ‘Salvage Anthropology' - the belief that Indigenous communities were dying and making way for modern society. These beliefs were built upon problematic eurocentric ideas of culture and value. And, at the same time, the recordings and interviews of these early scholars are today helping some Indigenous communities reconnect with ancestral knowledge and insights. This episode delves into this complicated history.Speakers:Dr. Cutcha Risling Baldy (Hupa, Yurok, Karuk)Dr. Samuel J RedmanCindi Alvitre (Tongva)Dr. Robin R. R. In the trends for 2023 episode I did 2 weeks ago, trend #3 was about the return and resurgence of in-person activities and events, which means more in-person speaking opportunities. (Btw, if you haven't listened to the trends episode 310 yet, definitely do so. I've received great feedback from listeners and I'm going to be talking about each of the trends more in depth in future episodes.) When new women join our Thought Leader Academy, I ask them to share what they liked to do when they were young and most of them loved performing, whether in school plays, singing, or dancing. There's definitely a connection between speaking and performance. However, once we start speaking for our business, we don't see the connection between speaking and performing and we miss out on bringing performance elements into our presentations and speeches. You don't need to sing and dance - unless you want to! - but there are things you can do to create a more immersive and memorable experience for your audience. At the end, I'll share an embarrassing moment from a high school performance I was in. In this episode, I talk about: Different types of performances Why we love attending performances The importance of synchrony and collective effervescence as humans My top tips you can do as a speaker to incorporate performance elements - and the benefits of doing so If you would like to work together to improve your in-person speaking skills, we are hosting our 3-day speaking intensive in Orlando at the end of February 2023. "In reference to those of different faiths, President Gordon B. Hinckley said, “Look for their strengths and their virtues, and you will find strength and virtues that will be helpful in your own life.” In striving to live a good, faithful life and foster loving family relationships in an ever-changing world, there is indeed much strength and virtue that we can gain from our Jewish friends and their examples." Today I sat down again with Dr. Michael Licona, Associate Professor of Theology at Houston Baptist University. This episode is the third in a new series where we'll take a book-by-book approach for most of the New Testament, but before we actually get to the individual books of the New Testament, though, I wanted to take some time to dig into the #Gospels as ancient biographies. To do just that, Mike joins us for the second week in a row, this time to talk about the differences between each Gospel. In 2017 Mike wrote a book titled Why Are There Differences in the Gospels? What We Can Learn from Ancient Biography (link below). I think this is the clearest and best all around explanation for why the four #canonical #evangelists differ in matters of detail, arrangement, and emphasis in each of their accounts. In the book, Mike examines several biographies written by a Greek author named Plutarch, who lived from roughly ad 46 to 120. #Plutarch often discussed the same person in different biographies, and Mike shows how these differences in matters of detail, arrangement, and emphasis from Plutarch are precisely the kinds of differences we see in the Gospels. Near the end of the episode Mike says, “Our view of inspiration must be consistent with what we see in Scripture,” and I think he's correct. For Why Are There Differences in the Gospels?
