The shark meat trade is a multi-billion dollar industry. But it receives relatively little attention, and remains understudied. This week, we sit down with conservation scientists Dr Divya Karnad and Dr Trisha Gupta, who have collaborated on research that aims to better understand the drivers and complexities of this trade. Using India as a case study, they are looking for ways to encourage more responsible and sustainable actions at all stages of the supply chain – from source to consumer. The papers mentioned in this episode are: Karnad, D., Narayani, S., Kottillil, S., Kottillil, S., Gupta, T., Barnes, A., Dias, A. and Krishna, Y.C., 2024. Mette Mitchell, my favourite homeopath, is back, and this time she's talking about the Narayani Remedies - a group of remedies that I had never heard about before. If you aren't familiar with homeopathy, then please be sure to check out my prior interviews with Mette, episode #'s 24, 37 and 54. Homeopathy offers so much support and peace of mind, so they are definitely worth your listening! They literally can be nothing short of miraculous.Today Mette introduces to us the Narayani remedies - a system of homeopathy that simplifies prescribing as the remedies really speak to all versions of the symptoms you are experiencing. It's basically the opposite of classical homeopathy, which helps bring the power to you rather than to the practitioner. What do I mean by that? I mean that you don't have to know all the nuances of the symptoms you are experiencing to find the correct remedy. The remedies are combinations of many remedies to cover all aspects of your symptoms. You feel tension? Go for the tension remedy. You have a cough? Go for CCA (one of Mette's favourites). In this episode Mette tells us about:Dosing with liquid remedies vs. pelletsHow vitality impacts how homeopathy worksHow to match potency to vitality (when in doubt go for 30C)Ruta - a great remedy for strainsMette's metaphor for dosing that illustrates how frequency of dosing adjusts over time with acute situationsWhy we don't dose homeopathy over the longer termWhat 'proving' a remedy isHow it was discovered which symptoms are treated with which remedyThe origins of the Narayani Remedies and how it is a 'complete' systemWhen it is ok to take certain remedies for a longer periodHow changing potencies for the same remedy changes how the remedy behaves in the bodyHow homeopathic prescribing has changed since the formal inception of homeopathyHow Narayani remedies come with very simple prescribing rulesHow different eras tend to require different remediesThe appropriateness of the remedy Baryta Carb in an age where it is time for us to 'grow up'How homeopathy wasn't invented, but discoveredThe benefit of the 'shock' remedyA description of several handy Narayani remedies, including remedies for detox, parasites, tension, organ support, shock and moreHow our symptoms are part of our healing, not the diseaseMette's 4-week Narayani class coming up on Oct. 2Why Mette believes we don't need to build vitality but to lift what is suppressing itWhere to get the remediesAnd more!If you enjoyed this episode, please share and consider going to www.sovereigncollective.org/shop to check out my offerings and get a deal while supporting the podcast. At the end of the Mahabharat war, only three warriors from Kaurava side survived; Kripacharya, Ashwatthama and Kritavarma. Kritavarma was the commander of Shrikrishna's Narayani sena and Duryodhan's friend. Because of Shrikrishna's promise to Duryodhan, he fought for the Kauravas in the great war. On the last day of the battle he accompanied Ashwatthama inside the Pandav camp and helped him in killing the five sleeping sons of Draupadi. Many years later when Kritavarma taunted Satyaki for the unfair killing of Bhurishrava, Satyaki called him out for killing helpless Uppandavas. This escalated into a full blown fight with various Yadav warriors taking sides. This fight resulted in the destruction of the Yadav clan. Learn more about your ad choices. As per Shrikrishna's promise to Duryodhana, his Narayani sena fought for Kaurava in Mahabharat war, however Satyaki from the Vrishni clan chose to fight alongside his friend and teacher Arjuna. After Arjuna and Bhima; Satyaki proved to be the most destructive for their Kaurava enemies. He had to suffer humiliation for beheading a weaponless Bhurishrava in the battlefield. Years later, when Kritavarma chose to humiliate him recalling this very incident their fight escalated and became the reason for destruction of the entire Yadav clan. After the killing of the demon, Shumbha, the gods became very happy and began to praise Goddess Katyayani (Chandika). Narayani is the “innate power behind the ultimate God”, and also the one “who provides the basis for all living beings.” She is the power behind Lord Narayana. The verses describe her attributes and express the gods' gratitude to the Goddess for saving them from the demons. The Devi Mahatmyam comprises chapters 81-93 of the Markandeya Purana. It narrates the stories and exploits of Durga in her fight against the demons. Devotees chant these verses during Durga Pooja to invoke the Goddess' blessings and protection. By Narayani Ganesh The essence of being human is illustrated beautifully through an Ubuntu proverb in Zulu culture, and this was often recalled by Nobel peace prize awardee and archbishop, Desmond Tutu: “I am a person through other people. My humanity is tied to yours.” He would explain it as follows: “One of the sayings in our country is Ubuntu – the essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can't exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness … We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity.” That is, the butterfly effect is as true among peoples of the world as it is true in the intricate web of nature, wherein all beings, animate and inanimate, are closely interconnected.Scholar-researchers Jacob Mugumbate, University of Wollongong, and Andrew Nyanguru, University of Zimbabwe, sum up Ubuntu philosophy as ‘I am because of who we all are.' Such an attitude would likely lead us to the essence of the summum bonum philosophy that denotes the “fundamental principle on which some system of ethics is based, that is, the aim of actions, which, if consistently pursued, will lead to the best possible life.”Mugumbate and Nyanguru published a paper on the place of Ubuntu philosophy in the study and practice of social work in terms of its impact on ethical and social issues that require deeper understanding coming from a wider, humanistic perspective. Something that is desperately needed, in a world being riven by meaningless divisions and conflicts. When we dehumanise others, we end up dehumanising ourselves, said Tutu, who felt that to heal both spirit and body, one had to learn to look at the positive aspects of any person, group or situation rather than focus only on the negative aspects. Both Tutu and Nelson Mandela stressed on the significance of magnanimity, reconciliation and forgiveness rather than on revenge and retribution. This was the spirit in which the famous Truth and Reconciliation proceedings took place in South Africa to help both victims and perpetrators of the Apartheid to overcome all the unpleasantness and tragedies, inspire forgiveness and herald a new era of hope, faith and love that would lead to peaceful and dignified co-existence.Ubuntu provides one with a strong sense of community “to override divisions and heal the scarred collective psyche”, pointed out Tutu. What we are as individuals is the sum of all that went before us; of all that we experience now and of all that could possibly happen in the future. A beautiful Ubuntu practice Tutu often related, involves community members sitting around a person who has committed wrong, and speak of all the good that person has done, focussing on all his positive qualities, for a few days in a row, in a sort of purification, a revelatory ritual. The belief is that all of us are good, but we do sometimes make mistakes, which is really a cry for help. The ritual is intended to help the person reconnect with this true nature – in the belief that “unity and affirmation have more power to change behaviour than shame and punishment.” ganeshnarayani@yahoo.com)
A Genuine Hug Could Make All The Difference By: Narayani Ganesh Dec 14, 2021, 17:41 IST For those who are grieving – either over the loss of a loved one, loss of, or on hearing news of a tragic copter crash that killed all on board – nothing one says can alleviate the pain and suffering they are going through. In fact sometimes words could have just the opposite effect, of aggravating the state they are in. But there is something in a hug that makes the aggrieved feel less pained, less stressed and less lost. Scientists say that hugging triggers the release of oxytocin in the body, which is why it is also referred to as the ‘cuddle hormone'. Oxytocin tends to reduce stress and increases happy feelings. This is perhaps why Mata Amritanandamayi began hugging those who came and poured out their problems to her. One warm hug from her and poof! Everything seemed to get better, and the visitor went away feeling that there was someone who really cared and who could feel their pain and empathise with them. This wordless therapy has worked for millions who have met this hugging mother or Hug Ma as she is popularly known. Scientists who explored ‘how to hug,' say there are two kinds of hugs performed by strangers. What makes one hug better than another? In the first, “crisscross” style, each hugger puts one arm over their partner's shoulder and the other arm under their partner's arm. In the second, called “neck-waist” style, the researcher put both arms under the participants'. In total, each of the 45 female participants in the study received six hugs, each hug lasting for anything between 1.5 seconds to ten seconds.Anna Düren, psychologist at Goldsmiths, University of London, and the study's first author, says the Covid-19 pandemic began before she and her colleagues could collect mixed gender data in follow-up studies. Nevertheless, part one of the study done in a controlled environment concluded that hugs of a shorter duration were less effective than those of a longer duration, even if the hug was from a stranger. The experiment's second phase took place in the real world. Researchers recruited 100 pairs of students observed socializing on campus to hug in public. The team gathered data on gender, height, and how emotionally close the pairs rated themselves. Without prompting the students on how to hug, it was found the crisscross style was more common, accounting for 66 out of 100 hugs. Düren says the male-male preference for crisscross hugs was especially interesting because previous work has indicated people feel more egalitarian about this style of hugging. The crisscross, she says, might convey closeness without adding romantic subtext.Hugs don't just confer emotional closeness; they've been shown to improve our mental and physical health. Hug Ma has been hugging visitors for decades now, as a sort of spiritual therapy, and this has never failed to make the hugged feel better. It gives one a sense of being accepted, understood, and empathized with, resulting in a magical effect; hence the moniker in Hindi, ‘jaadu ki jhappi', magical hug, that leaves one feeling loved, cared for and wanted. Hugging speaks volumes without having to use words, and is comforting, calming, therapeutic and soothing. So long as the intention is pure and the feelings are altruistic, even hugs from strangers, at a time when you are down and out, can work wonders. ganeshnarayani@yahoo.com
Edward Clark is the creator of Tripsichore, the London-based yoga performance group that has delighted audiences around the world. The performance company was created to explore the possibilities of a form of theater that would celebrate yoga philosophy and extraordinary physical prowess. Edward began studying yoga in 1978. Notable among his teachers are Narayani and Giris Rabinovitch, but he also admires Ashtanga vinyasa, Sivananda, Iyengar, and viniyoga practices. The Tripsichore group has practiced daily for the past 20 years. Constantly devising and refining its techniques for asana, pranayama, pratayahara, dharana, and dhyana. Edward fuses his keen artistic vision with a deep understanding of the essential pursuit of yoga practice. His classes are entertaining, demanding, and exhilarating. Vinyasa Applied to Yoga Philosophy Edward says, “The concept of vinyasa as applied to yoga philosophy could either be considered very ancient or radically new. In either case, vinyasa seems to be one of the great contributions to yoga of this particular generation of yogis. VINYASA in our definition, is the evenly metered flow of movement, breath and thought. This resulting in a smooth, uninflected state of being. The vinyasa techniques are pursued to bring about clarity and stability to one's thoughts and actions. Tripsichore endeavours to do this in class and onstage. Most yoga discipline has worked on refining one's self in the direction of greater stillness – an absence of movement in the mind and body. Superficially, vinyasa would seem to contradict this. However, the mental focus and physical technique needed to bring about continuous fluid movement can also bring one to a “seat” of great stability and clarity. The stability is not only in the posture. It is in addition in the transition between postures – to the point where there is no distinction between movement and stillness. Yoga Choreography Tripsichore began in 1979 as a company devoted to creating full length dance narratives. They explored a variety of stylistic forms including punk ballet, conventional modern dance and strict neo-classical technique. They used masks, performed with rock bands and did pop videos. While yoga was always a part of their training, it wasn't until 1992 that they realised the expressive potential and choreographic viability of yoga postures. Once they began to devise works using yoga asanas, their extraordinary artistic logic became evident. Surprisingly, it would seem that there has been no orthodox tradition for using yoga technique to create dances in the 5000 year history of the discipline. The postures are the ideal vehicle to express the themes of harmony, balance, spirituality, ecstasy, bliss and mysticism because they are exactly about these subjects in and of themselves. It is incomprehensible (“paluku”) how Ravana such an ardent devotee (“agresarunta”) of Siva (“parama shaambhavaa”) miscalculated your response (“theliyaleka poye”). Through Anjaneya you tendered (“baaga balkitivi”) him advice (“hitavu maata”) and persuaded him to free Sita devi. When one pours water on the root of a tree, the branches, trunk, twigs, flowers and leaves are all satisfied. Similarly, when one gives food to the stomach, all parts of the body are rejuvenated. In the same way, if one simply satisfies Lord Viṣṇu by the performance of yajña, one satisfies all the demigods automatically. In turn, the demigods offer their benedictions to such a devotee.
When King Pṛthu is described as an incarnation of Lord Viṣṇu, it should be understood that he is a śaktyāveśa-avatāra, part and parcel of Lord Viṣṇu, and is specifically empowered by Him. Any living being acting as the incarnation of Lord Viṣṇu is thus empowered by Lord Viṣṇu to preach the bhakti cult. Such a person can act like Lord Viṣṇu and defeat demons by arguments and preach the bhakti cult exactly according to the principles of śāstra.
There are many competitors in ordinary business affairs, and the karma-kāṇḍa chapters of the Vedas sometimes cause competition and envy amongst karmīs. A karmī must be envious because he wishes to enjoy material pleasures to their fullest extent. That is the material disease. Consequently there is always competition amongst karmīs, either in ordinary business affairs or in the performance of yajña.
